Coca-Cola league one – match day two

Posted ImageVPosted Image

A very dull encounter at the City Ground this evening saw Nottingham Forest triumph over a stubborn Blackpool side thanks to two second half strikes from two midfield players.

The visitors had the first chance of the first half when Southern’s free kick was only parried clear from Tim Krul but Danny Cullip managed to remove the danger pretty quickly.

On thirty-two minutes, Blackpool should have had the lead in a very boring first half when somehow Burgess dragged the shot past the far post when belting it in probably would have been better.

The half time whistle was blown at half time and the end of a boring first half and Vegard Heggem had to try to wake up the Forest fans who where probably sleeping, he changed tactics into a four-four-two formation to try and get the result.

On fifty minutes, Andy Morrel maybe should have done better when he tried his luck from a tricky angle but it was never causing Tim Krul any problems in the Nottingham Forest goals.

It took fifty-eight minutes and probably undeserved but Nottingham Forest had finally broken through when a knockdown from Sammy Clingan who came on for an injured Kris Commons knocked it down and Gary Holt smashed the ball into the net from all of thirty yards, fantastic finish.

Gary Holt had a great chance to double the lead from another long drive from Gary Holt but it cannoned off the crossbar and Junior Agogo couldn’t bundle the ball, as it was a great chance.

A ball from Grant Holt found Junior Agogo with two minutes remaining on the watch but he couldn’t get the ball into the net but lucky for him Sammy Clingan was there to bundle it home and Forest had the points.

The full time whistle was blown at the City Ground and Forest had picked up their first three points of the season by two goals to nil in which was a boring dull affair to tell the truth.

Meh, he was awarded but to be honest no one deserved it.

Forest suffer two cruel injury blows
Wednesday, August 9 2006

Vegard Heggem was far from happy once he realised he had lost two key members of his first team for quite a bit when Commons and Fadiga got injured in the Tricky Trees’ two-nil win over Blackburn on Tuesday night.

The first major injury was to Kris Commons who has been sent to see a specialist so he should return between two and three months, if he didn’t he would be out for up to six months or eight months if they had injected him for the trip to Bradford, Commons picked up a hip injury.

Kris, 22 is a vital part of the first team so Heggem will indeed feel a miss as he thought he’d be a rock on the left wing throughout the whole season but now he should return in November from his injury.

The left midfielder has only made two appearances this season, well one and a bit as he was forced off injured and some other players feel it’s a blow too.

The second blow is Khalilou Fadiga but his isn’t as bad as first feared and isn’t as bad as Kris’ and he’ll be out for up to four weeks with a twisted knee, he was forced to continue on throughout the rest of the game as the manager didn’t have any other midfield choices to bring on.

The thirty-one year old joined on a free transfer after he was released from Bolton Wanderers has also made two league appearances as the side have only played two but he hopes to be back in end of September or October.

Coca-Cola league one – match day three

Posted ImageVPosted Image

Nottingham Forest couldn’t manage a single attempt on target as Nottingham Forest drew nil-nil at Bradford City in the latest league one encounter, James Perch was brought in to replace Fadiga and Guthrie was brought in to replace Commons.

Nottingham Forest did have the first chance however when Pittman got into the area but unfortunally for him his shot skimmed the top of the crossbar and it doesn’t go down as on target.

Jermaine Johnson had a chance for City in the ninth minute but his effort ended up going well off target and maybe he could have taken his time and had a better chance.

With twenty-two minutes gone John Curtis drove his shot wide of the talent and it still remained nil-nil at Valley Parade.

A poor clearance with just under half an hour gone saw the ball for Nicky Southall but he couldn’t get it on target as he blazed it over the top of the crossbar.

An Alan Rodgers free kick was brilliantly punched away by Tim Krul and it got cleared from midfielder Gary Holt as that was the first chance on target and it took thirty-six minutes.

A Doyle free kick found Bower but his header was tipped over the crossbar from the on-loan Newcastle goalkeeper, Krul with still six minutes remaining till half time.

With fifty-six minutes on the clock Jon-Paul Pittman should have put the visitors into the advantage but unfortunally for them he didn’t strike the ball right and it went past the post and didn’t trouble Ricketts.

A cross-found Holmes with ten minutes remaining but his header was inches over the crossbar as it was a great chance to break the deadlock but he missed.

The full time whistle went and it was a pretty boring affair involving Nottingham Forest for the second straight week.

Just like when Forest played Blackpool, no one really deserved man of the match as it was boring, but Bradford's Nathan Doyle did get it.

Nottingham Forest 0-0 Cheltenham Town
Saturday, August 17 2006
Coca-Cola league one – match day four

Posted ImageVPosted Image

Nottingham Forest’s bad form of just one win continued at home to Cheltenham Town as they dropped to their second straight goalless draw in league one as no tactic seems to be working, yes it was yet another dull affair.

It took bloody seventeen minutes for the first chance of the game when Strachan’s drive was tipped round the post from Tim Krul and Town had a corner at Forest.

It took twenty-eight minutes for Forest to have a first chance on target, unfortunally for the report the cameraman didn’t see who had the shot but Higgs in the visitor’s goal easily held it.

In the forty-first minute Nottingham Forest had a great chance but when concentration mattered he skimmed the top of the bar from Nicky Southall but it was a pointless sh*t match at the City Ground.

Just twenty seconds into the second half Jon-Paul Pittman had a great chance to open the scoring when he broke clear but he couldn’t beat Higgs in the Cheltenham goal as Heggem was getting really annoyed on the touchline.

Another chance came for the home side when Grant Holt smashed the ball towards the top corner but it went over the bar as it didn’t look like they where going to score today.

Danny Cullip drove a ball over the top of the crossbar with just under twenty minutes remaining as the fans where starting to leave the stadium in annoyance as over eighteen and a half thousand crammed in because they thought they would win.

The whistle was blown and the boos came from the Forest supporters because they where getting very, very annoyed with the Forest players at the moment.

Carling Cup first round

Posted ImageVPosted Image

For the first time in one hundred and ninety minutes in all competitions, Nottingham Forest managed to score a goal in this evening’s Carling Cup tie at home to Carlisle as Sammy Clingan won it.

It took just one minute for Carlisle to get going when defender, Murphy placed his shot over the crossbar and he could have done probably better with a bit of concentration.

The deadlock was broken on ten minutes when Guthrie flicked the ball onto Northern Ireland’s Sammy Clingan and he placed the ball past Westwood in the Carlisle goal and Forest finally scored.

Ten minutes later, Joyce could have equalised for United when he curled a free kick just past the near post and it didn’t trouble Tim Krul in the Forest goal.

When a cross-found Hackney you could of put money on him equalising but unfortunally when he shot the ball it was coolly blocked by Tim Krul and it got cleared with Forest still leading.

A fluke cross almost caught out Tim Krul but he got a finger to it and Karl Hawley followed up but before he could do any danger the linesman raised his flag for offside as Hawley went too fast.

On sixty-eight minutes, Karl Hawley had a good chance to equalise but his shot was parried brilliantly by Krul in the home goal as Carlisle probably had to score today, about five minutes later Hawley crashed it over the bar again.

Carlisle where then reduced to ten men when McDermott was sent off for receiving his second yellow card for a foul on Jack Lester and the referee had no choice at all but to show him the second yellow.

Ryan Garry came very close to adding a second in adding time but his shot skimmed the top of the crossbar as that was probably the last chance of the game at the City Ground.

Nottingham Forest have advanced here today after a one-nil victory over Carlisle United in the First round of the Carling Cup with Tim Krul on song for the league one promotion contenders.

Tim Krul kept Forest in the game and at the end they won one-nil and advance

Rotherham United 0-1 Nottingham Forest
Saturday, August 26 2006
Coca-Cola league one – match day five

Posted ImageVPosted Image

Nottingham Forest won for the first time in three league games after they scored the winning goal in the second half at Milmoor as Rotherham United lost their first game of the season.

Scott Wiseman had the first chance of the match when he was allowed to cut inside and have a shot but Tim Krul punched it over the top and it was a corner.

With seventeen minutes gone again Wiseman was causing problems and again he saw another one of his shots tipped over from Krul, as Nottingham Forest couldn’t get going.

Nottingham Forest decided to have a chance when I think Nathan Tyson saw his shot be tipped over and it was a corner, it didn’t count as an on target drive yet Rotherham’s did.

On thirty-four minutes Nathan Tyson managed to blaze a shot over the crossbar as it was never going to cause Turner any problems, but it would have it he had more concentration.

A Gary Holt free kick with their first chance of the second half was sent over the top as once more they couldn’t get an on target shot with forty-eight minutes gone.

A free kick was awarded in the fifty-sixth minute after a foul by Colin Murdock, James Perch was going to take it and he planted it into the back of the net and Forest with their first on target chance, score.

A Eugene Bopp fluke chance was tipped over the bar from Tim Krul, in fact it had to be or Rotherham would or could have gotten an equaliser with two minutes remaining.

A second goal should have arrived when James had a chance but Hurst had to make an important challenge I think after Turner stopped the ball or it would have been two in added time.

The whistle went and Nottingham Forest won by a single goal to nil in the latest League one encounter.

Heggem completes Grimes signing
Tuesday, August 29 2006

Nottingham Forest have this afternoon completed the signing of Man City’s striker Ashley Grimes for a fee believed to be around twenty two thousand pounds and should go straight into the squad to face Crewe in a couple of days.

The nineteen year old is only on one hundred and eighty pounds a week, which is awesome for a club of Forest stature and hope he’ll be a good signing so Heggem can prove ‘you don’t need to pay over the odds for talent’.

The six foot striker can also play in behind the main men, which he will be used in the attacking midfield section when Crewe Alexandra visit the City Ground in just four days for another league one encounter as Forest look to set the league alight, something they have not been doing yet.

Ashley Grimes will celebrate his twentieth birthday in April the twentieth two thousand and seven as he was boring in nineteen eighty-seven and he has made no appearances for City in the first team.

The young man was placed on the transfer list as he became surplus to requirements at the City of Manchester stadium and will come straight into the squad but he knows he needs to impress Heggem.

August round-up
Friday, September 1 2006

It’s not been an up and down month for Nottingham Forest this month as they haven’t set the league alight like the media would like as I am a lying tenth in the Coca-Cola league on table at the moment.

They did end the month however with a good one-nil victory away at Rotherham United who where unbeaten despite being lying in twenty-third in league one before they hosted Forest.

Dennis Lawerence of Swansea City won the PowerAde player of the month for August after turning in some impressive performances and helping Swansea to the top of the league one title. Jason Price and James Perch of Doncaster Rovers and Nottingham Forest came in second and third respectively.

The reason James Perch didn’t win Player of the month for August is because he won the Young player of the month after his stunning free kick won the game against Rotherham United with a free kick, on-loan Leon Best of Yeovil came second and Kevin Thornton of Brighton was third.

Kenny Jackett of Swansea won the manager of the month this month after seeing him side go top of the league one table after remaining the whole month unbeaten, which started with a four-one win at home to Brentford and ended with a two-nil home win against Gillingham.

Clint Easton won the goal of the month this month after his stunner of a free kick against Cheltenham Town for Gillingham back on August eighth, Paul Shaw came in at number two against Bradford for Chesterfield and Phil Jevons got third after his goal for Bristol City against Bournemouth.

Nottingham Forest 0-1 Crewe Alexandra
Saturday, September 2 2006
Coca-Cola league one – match day six

Posted ImageVPosted Image

Vegard Heggem was so furious come the full time whistle after he branded his players totally unprofessional after Crewe won at the City Ground and completely dominated player, resulted in Heggem needing to sort out tactics.

Grant Holt really should have done better in the tenth minute when he found himself in space but he managed to drive his effort well off target and it was never troubling Williams in the Alex goal.

A second off target chance came when Nathan Tyson managed to blaze the ball over the top just six minutes later as his strikers needed a bit of composure in front of goal or would it have killed them?

On twenty-one minutes a great ball from Jon Otsemobor found Luke Rodgers in space and he put the ball past Pedersen in the Forest goal who was in for Krul who was away on International duty but the referee disallowed it for offside, as it was Rodney Jack who was offside.

Just three minutes later however, Pedersen had to bring a fantastic save out of Lee Bell who was an early substitute for Luke Varney who was forced off injured on four minutes.

Grant Holt had another chance for Forest, which he should have done better with, with about six minutes remaining off the first half when he struck the ball over with his less favourable left foot.

It took five minutes in the second half for the first second half chance, which saw Grant blaze the ball over the top from about twenty yards out but it was never going to cause Pedersen any problems.

It took sixty-five minutes and the City Ground was stoned quiet when Chris Brown broke the Forest offside trap and he ran and placed his shot past the diving Pedersen and Crewe where leading and you can’t say they don’t deserve it.

An Ashley Grimes free kick with less than fifteen minutes remaining was met by the head of Wes Morgan who couldn’t direct it on target and when the luck goes against you, it really does go against you.

The full time whistle was blown at the City Ground and again the Forest fans who where their booed the players off the field as it simply was not a good enough performance and Vegard Heggem said it best when he said ‘I have seen amateurs defend and play better’

Nottingham Forest 2-0 Bristol City
Saturday, September 9 2006
Coca-Cola league one – match day seven

Posted ImageVPosted Image

Nottingham Forest returned to winning ways as they triumphed to a two-nil win over Bristol City at the City Ground this afternoon thanks to a double from Grant Holt.

Nathan Tyson should have set up Grant Holt in only the fifth minute but Tyson got the chance all wrong and ended up dragging it past the post much to the relief of Adriano Basso.

A James cross was flicked away from Basso in the City goal and it easily got cleared on eight minutes, but a scare there as James was going for goal more than likely.

Eighteen minutes gone and Bristol City had their first chance of the game when a Murray free kick was brilliantly saved from Krul after Fontaine got his header on target but it was kept out.

A brilliant John Curtis ball with ten minutes of the first half remaining let in Grant Holt and he ran and slotted the ball beyond the reach of Adriano Basso and he went away to celebrate.

In added time at the end of the game, Murray played a quick ball to Baidoo but he couldn’t score as he was so close to equalising as it grazed the top of the crossbar.

Fifty-six minutes and Nathan Tyson was allowed to break away from the last defender but he rushed his shot and blazed it over the top of the crossbar, as with a bit more composure it would have been probably two-nil.

A ball played through to Noble as maybe he should have got the equaliser but his shot was easily blocked by the on-loan Newcastle United goalkeeper, Tim Krul with seventy-seven minutes remaining.

A cross-ball and knock back Padula who was playing on the left wing today due to injuries and International duty knocked it across to Grant Holt who was there to finish the ball and it was surely all over with five minutes remaining.

The whistle had gone and Nottingham Forest has won by two goals to nil and now they need to build on it with Nottingham Forest travelling to Millwall in a couple of days.

Grant Holt ends goal drought
Sunday, Saturday 10 2006

Yesterday after his two goals against Bristol City, Grant Holt ended his goal drought, which went onto ten hours as in the thirty-fourth minute he scored his first goal of the season against Bristol City.

It took him seven games into the season as he finally put the ball into the net past Adriano Basso who he should thank as he conceded two goals against him to finally end it.

He failed to score against Huddersfield Town, Blackpool, Bradford City, Cheltenham Town, Rotherham United and Crewe Alexandra all in league one and Carlisle United in the Carling Cup.

His manager, Vegard Heggem was delighted to see his striker finally break his duck for the season, now he just hopes Nathan Tyson can do the same at Millwall on Tuesday night.

Millwall 3-1 Nottingham Forest
Tuesday, September 12 2006
Coca-Cola league one – match day eight

Posted ImageVPosted Image

Nottingham Forest’s inconsistent season continued tonight as Millwall came from a goal down to defeat Nottingham Forest by three goals to one at the New Den.

Forest had the first chance of the game when Grant Holt broke through but he had his shot brilliantly saved from the home sides Goalkeeper and Whitbread cleared, with three minutes gone.

The visitors deservedly broke the deadlock with eight minutes gone when Sammy Clingan knocked the ball into Nathan Tyson who curled the ball brilliantly past Lenny Pidgley in the Millwall goal.

A corner kick from Kevin James but it was a poor corner and it went straight to Lenny Pidgley in the goal of the home side, but after a poor clearance the ball was knocked back to Grant Holt who slammed it home, but it was disallowed for offside.

It took nineteen minutes for the home side to have their first chance when Byfield was picked out but Krul who wasn’t going to be beaten from that angle parried his drive.

On twenty-five minutes the equaliser was scored when a Byfield cross-found Hubertz and he headed it into the back of the net, which left Krul with absolute no chance.

A poor clearance found Brighton and the Millwall player hit it just off target as it looked like it was going to head into the back of the net with just twenty-eight minutes gone as Millwall where taking control.

Sammy Clingan was next to have a go from a free kick but he saw it graze the top of the bar with about six minutes of the first half remaining at the New Den.

Another Forest chance came from a long Nathan Tyson drive, which was parried into the path of Grant Holt but he couldn’t get it in as the Millwall supporters rose to praise their goalkeeper.

Nottingham Forest had a great chance to go ahead in added time at the end of the first half when Bakayoko brought down a Forest player and the referee pointed to the spot, Padula stepped up but it was saved from the former Chelsea goalkeeper.

With fifty-seven minutes gone, Byfield again had a chance to get on the score sheet but again he couldn’t put the ball past him, great save from the on-loan goalkeeper.

A free kick found Gary Holt but he managed to hear the ball over the bar but it was never going to trouble the goalkeeper who used to play for Premiership side Chelsea with an hour gone.

In the seventy-first minute, Millwall turned it around at the New Den when Darren Byfield finally got on the score sheet as he placed his ball perfectly out of the reach of Krul.

Millwall more than likely secured the points with a third goal after a Bakayoko free kick was headed into the back of the net from Hubertz and it beat Krul before he could move, game over surely.

A Marvin Williams cross with five minutes remaining was flicked into the net from Hubertz but the referee disallowed the goal for a foul on the goalkeeper Tim Krul as he pushed him.

When the referee blew for full time the Forest players left the pitch starching the head wondering how they lost the game, when they scored one goal, had one disallowed and even missed a penalty all in the first half.

Yeh, I am currently look around for a decent one.

4-4-2 doesn't seem to work on this game, ever, maybe it's just for me but it doesn't seem to work.

I'll see if my new one works, with three at the back and see how it works in my next game. :)

G'day Hughesie, it's Spav from The Dugout here. It's great to see that you are still writing excellent stories, mate. Now I know where you have been posting since I last saw you in TMD.

Hopefully you'll start getting some better results out of Nottm Forest soon, but the actual story - both writing and presentation - is top quality as usual. I look forward to reading more. KUTGW

Northampton Town 0-0 Nottingham Forest
Saturday, September 16 2006
Coca-Cola league one – match day nine

Posted ImageVPosted Image

In a game Nottingham Forest dominated from start to finish, manager Vegard Heggem was left furious as he only left the hole of Northampton with a nil-nil draw when he should have won it easy with a new look formation.

It took eighteen minutes for the first chance of the game when Nathan Tyson broke clear of the last Town defender and his cross shot was tipped away by Turnbull and Hunt cleared it as it could have went in.

On twenty-five minutes once again Tyson got away from the last defender but once again he was stopped from the Northampton Town goalkeeper, Turnbull as it still remained goalless.

Grabban had a great chance to put the home side into the lead when he broke away from the last Forest defender and the flag stayed down but he couldn’t get his drive on target when he could and should have done better.

Just seven minutes or so later, Grabban once again broke clear of the Forest defence but this time his drive was tipped over the crossbar from the on-loan Toon goalkeeper, Tim Krul.

In added time at the end of the first half a cross from Nathan Tyson found Sammy Clingan and he somehow blazed over the bar from close range, oh dear he shouldn’t have done that and Forest could have been in the lead.

In the first minute of the second half, Gary Holt decided he wanted to try his luck from the edge of the area but his drive was parried away from the diving Turnbull and it remained still nil-nil at Sixfields.

With twenty minutes remaining of the match, Grabban almost scored a wonderful goal after a poor back pass caught Krul out but he had hit the shot high and over the bar and Krul screamed at his defence.

Another chance just two minutes later fell for Gary Holt from a free kick, which he had placed over the bar when he was going for the top corner of the net and trying to win the match for Forest.

Seven minutes where remaining when Grant Holt had a chance to break the deadlock but his tame effort was easily blocked by the chest of the Northampton goalkeeper as this now had nil-nil written all over it.

The whistle had blown and Nottingham Forest’s quest to get promoted from league one has taken another blow as they drew nil-nil at Northampton today to remain in fourteenth position.

Carling Cup second round

Nottingham Forest has crashed out of the Carling Cup two-nil at home to Midlands’s rivals, Derby County as Heggem has once again proved that goal scoring is a major problem.

Forest had a great chance to go ahead from the penalty spot with just only eight minutes gone on the clock when Bob Malcolm decided to chop down Grant Holt and the referee had no choice, Gary Holt stepped up but Lee Grant saved the ninth minute penalty.

Lee Barnard had Derby’s first chance worth noting but he saw his shot get tipped over the crossbar from Tim Krul who couldn’t do anything else with the ball on fourteen minutes.

It took twenty minutes for Derby to break through much to the anger of the City Ground when Barnes flicked the ball to Howard to squeezed it into the back of the net and Derby led.

A sharp turn from Barnard could have put Derby two goals ahead but he couldn’t get the ball past Tim Krul who needed that save to keep Nottingham Forest in the game.

A corner from Ryan Smith found Bob Malcolm’s head but he couldn’t direct the header on target and it stayed one-nil to the visitors and Midlands rivals Derby.

Things where to get worse for Nottingham Forest in the first half when Kevin James was given a straight red card after he caught Mo Camara with his elbow and the referee had no choice so with thirty-eight minutes gone Forest where a goal down and a man down.

A good chance came again for Derby when a cross-found Barnes but he couldn’t keep the header down but if he did it probably would have been two-nil in added time at the end of the first half.

Five minutes into the second half and Derby County still wouldn’t let the home side relax and Matt Oakley decided to try his luck from the edge of the area but he blazed his drive over.

Just two minutes after the hour, Tim Krul brought a fantastic save out of Lee Barnard but it was straight into the path of Steve Howard who couldn’t miss, well somehow he did and the Tricky Trees where off the hook.

It took sixty-seven minutes for Derby to finally kill off Forest when Ryan Smith was causing trouble all night and he cross for Lee Barnard who flicked the ball into the bottom far corner past Krul and it was two.

The visitors where now looking to humiliate the poor league one side and Giles Barnes had to see his shot tipped over the crossbar from the home side goalkeeper who couldn’t be at fault for any of the goals.

You could hear the boos from the Forest supporters who where getting so frustrated when Bob Malcolm could have scored a third but he was stopped by Krul who surely deserves the man of the match award, which he probably wont get.

The boos where deafening when the full time whistle went and Nottingham Forest where knocked out of the Carling Cup, two-nil at home to Derby County. Next up for them is a murdering defeat when they take on the league leaders, Swansea City at home.

The former Arsenal winger, Ryan Smith was causing Forest all sorts of problems all night long.

Coca-Cola league one – match day ten

Nottingham Forest have failed to score for the third straight match in all competitions after a nil-nil draw with leaders Swansea City, which is now angering manager Heggem branding them ‘morons’ in this boring affair in Nottingham.

A turn from Scouser, Lee Trundle saw his shot get blazed well off target from the brilliant twenty-nine year old England (uncapped) striker who maybe could have took another touch and done better.

A great, great chance came for the home side when Fadiga played in Nathan Tyson but he managed to miss his shot when he was aiming for the top right corner, oh but it went over, a glaring miss.

A minute after the hour mark, Lee Trundle couldn’t keep his shot down as he blazed it over the bar from just outside the penalty area, terrible chance.

A Butler free kick went straight into the arms of Tim Krul in the Nottingham Forest goal as with seventy-two minutes gone there was still no chances on target, pathetic.

Lee Trundle had Swansea City’s first chance on target of the match, one problem really is that it took ninety minutes for it to happen when he quickly shot and Tim Krul parried it and Garry finally cleared, Forest also had a chance on target.

Substitute, Rory Fallon could have won it for Swansea when he had a chance but he had hit it straight at Krul who punched it for a corner kick and Swansea had two on target but the game was over.

The full time whistle blew and Vegard Heggem was actually delighted for this match to be over as it was the worst and most boring match he’s ever seen in his short Nottingham Forest career, they travel to Tranmere next.

Tim Krul somehow got man of the match, probably for keeping out Trundle and Fallon late on.
