CARLING CUP THIRD ROUND

Spurs have been drawn in a home tie against fellow Premiership side Portsmouth in the third round of the Carling Cup Third Round after the draw was made today. Kevin Hancocks side will get a taste of what Pompey are like as they travel to Fratton Park to take on Harry Redknapps side this afternoon in search of their first win .

Both Portsmouth and Tottenham have both had bad starts to their Premier League seasons and this game may just be one to watch.

In other Tottenahm news Jamie O Hara has joined Barnsley on loan for the season and is expected to gain valuable first team experience.

English Premier League

Fratton Park

Portsmouth 0 - 0 Tottenham

Paul Robinson produced a stellar performance as he helped Tottenham to their second draw of the season away to Portsmouth earlier today at Fratton Park. In an even contest which could have swung either way it was a tale of two english goalkeepers, one still in the early stages of his career the other nearing the end.

Tottenham nearly struck a killer blow only just six minutes in but David James was equal to Keanes shot which was destined for the top corner before the former Liverpool man sprung himself across the goal to tip it away. Sol Campbell a former Spurs player who famously left to join fierce rivals Arsenal was booed throughout the game by the away supporters was immense at the back for Pompey as Spurs pushed for a goal.

Just before the half hour mark Robinson made three saves in the space of a minute, tipping wide a Utaka shot which had real venom behind it, then a header from Distin from a Glen Johnson corner and then once again denieing Utaka with a great save down low to his left. Just before half time Robinson tipped a Pedro Mendes freekick onto the post before blocking a Campbell shot to the delight of the Spurs fans.

After half time it was much the same. Tottenhams Robinson denied Portsmouth and Portsmouths James denied Tottenham. The only real turning point came right at the end when Suli Muntari was given his marching orders for an elbow on Jenas meaning he will now incur an automatic three match ban and whatever the FA decide to hand down if they see it nesscacary to do so. Now both set of supporters will look forward to the clubs meeting in the Carling Cup Third Round which will take place at White Harte Lane.

SPURS TO CZECH IT OUT

Posted Image

Tottenham Hotspur will play Czech side Mlada Boleslav in the Uefa Cup first round. The first leg will be played at White Hart Lane on the 20th of September with the return to be played at the Mestsky Stadion on the 4th of October.

Tottenham will be hoping that they have wrapped up the tie by the time their trip to the Republic comes along as the harsh conditions expected will suit the Czech players and could offer an advantage.

HOW THE BOOKIES SEE IT

Spurs are 4-5 favourites to win the tie and Boleslav are 7-2 to cause a shock.

English Premier League

White Hart Lane

Tottenham 1 - 0 Wigan Athletic

Another fantastic display from Paul Robinson, the returning Michael Dawson and Lee Young Pyo propelled Tottenham to their first win of the season and as usual under Hancock they brought their fans and manager on a cliffhanging rollercoaster before referee Lee Mason blew his whistle for full time.

Tottenham started with a four five one formation with Kewell and Boateng obviously starting in more attacking roles on the wing. Darren Bent was preferred to Robbie Keane and Dimitar Berbatov, possibly with Hancocks mind turned towards their uefa cup tie with Mlada Boleslav on Thursday night.

Tottenham where quick out of the block with neat and tidy passing and Bent went close within the first four minutes when he powered his header just wide after Lee Young Pyo had whipped in a dangerous looking cross. Wigan replied swiftly and Heskey could only watch as his mish*t shot was spectaculary tipped over by Robinson.

The next twenty minutes was all Wigan, at one stage they had racked up sixty eight percent possession but they didnt make it pay and failed to test Robinson at all in their most prominent period and they almost paid when Hancock switch to his normal four four two as Kewell joined Bent up front. Malbranque played a low hard ball across the front of the Wigan defense asking question and the jittery Titus Bramble made a meal of his clearance and Kewell nearly benefitted, but the Australian had to watch as his shot hit the foot of the post and went out for a goal kick.

At half time Boateng came off for Berbatov. The Bulgarians introduction didnt spark any great change in fortune for Spurs. The game went through a boring patch up until the seventie fifth minute when Hancock withdrew Bent and Malbranque for Zokora and Keane. Keane nearly made an instant impact when his shot was deflected onto goal but Kirkland was up to the challenge.

Wigan manager Chris Hutchings withdrew booked captain Michael Brown for Paul Scharner and paid dearly within three minutes. With four minutes signalled in added on time Tottenham went for broke and got their reward just two minutes from time.

When Young Pyo found Keane in space , the Irishman played a delightful ball for Berbatov to run onto, but only for the stupidity of Titus Bramble Berbatov would have been offside instead he was well onside and one on one with Kirkland. As Berbatov drew down on the keeper, fans rose to their feet in anticipation and their vice captain duely delivered as he brought the ball wide of Kirkland and rolled it home for his second league goal and gave Tottenham their first three points under Kevin Hancock.

Uefa Cup 1st Round 1st Leg

White Hart Lane

Tottenham 2 - 2 Mlada Boleslav

Tottenham Hotspurs where made to reflect as a brace by Alexandre Mendy and a fantastic penalty save from Vladimir Lukas gave the Czech side a great oppourtunity of causing a major upset in two weeks time when the 2nd leg takes place at their home ground.

In a game in which Spurs where expected to easily dispose of their Czech opponents it all went horribly wrong within six minutes as Mendy struck a beautiful strike from fourteen yards out leaving White Hart Lane silent as Boleslav took a unexpected one nil lead. Tottenham did not wait long thou to try and get back into the game with Keane powering a header onto the bar just three minutes later.

The Irishman would go one better just fourteen minutes later.

Some neat play by Jenas released Malbranque down the left and the former Fulham player picked Keane out with a perfect cross and this time the Irishman made no mistake at the back post, guiding his header back towards goal and clawing the tie back in Spurs favour as the White Hart Lane crowd came alive.

They had further joy to celebrate with twenty minutes to go when Dimitar Berbatov guided a delicately struck free kick into the top right corner to give Spurs the lead and once again make the crowd go wild. Thou not for long.

Football can be a cruel game and as Spurs pressed forward to kill the game off, they where caught on the counter. As Jermaine Jenas shot which thundered of the crossbar was cleared away it suddenly dawned on Boleslav players that they outnumbered the Tottenham defence 4 to 2, with this they went from a slight jog to sprints and when Petr picked out Mendy with a sweet cross the striker matched it with a sweet volleyed finish dragging Boleslav level and one step closer to the second round.

Tottenham had a chance to restore their lead in the eighty ninth minute when Kopic fouled Bent in the box. The ever reliable Berbatov stepped up, placed the ball, calmed himself and placed the shot high into the top right corner, unfortunatly thou for the striker Vladimir Lukas was not fond of the thought that Berbatov would be a hero by converting the spot kick and he flung himself across his goal to tip it wide towards the corner flag and thats how it ended.

English Premier League

Stamford Bridge

Posted ImagePosted Image

Chelsea 4 - 1 Tottenham

The mounting pressure on Spurs manager Kevin Hancock is set to intensify after Chelsea dismantled their London rivals at Stamford Bridge and subjected them to a four one drubbing. Didier Drogba was on hand to score two goals either side of half time, with other goals from Frank Lampard and Michael Essien doing more than enough to dispose of the team with the second worst defensive record in the Premier League this season only beaten by Aston Villa.

It took just two minutes for the league leaders to open the scoring, a usual sight over the last three years, Frank Lampard driving a shot from outside the box into the bottom corner to give Chelsea a fantastic start and leave Tottenham fans everywhere shaking their heads.

Things got worse just thirteen minutes later as Essien scored a screamer from over thirty yards out to show that class can really make a difference on the big occasion something Tottenham have lacked even on the small occasion let alone on such a big day like the one at Stamford Bridge.

Just four minutes later and Drogba had all but wrapped the points up for Grants men as he beat Dawson to the punch and poked home his third goal of the campaign after Ashley Cole had delivered a question asking cross which Dawson could not answer.

After half time Tottenham managed to save themselves some embarressment when Darren Bent scored five minutes after the break but it was not enough as Petr Cech saved shot after shot from Berbatov,Bent,Keane and Defoe and with only a minute or two remaining Drogba fired home a late free kick to make it four one to Chelsea and firmly cement their place at the top of the Barclays English Premier League table.

As for Tottenham they must now prepare for the Carling Cup Third Round match against Portsmouth at home in three days time, but on this showing they wont be seeing the fourth round even if Harry Redknapp plays the under eighteens side.

Carling Cup Third Round

White Hart Lane

Tottenham 1 - 4 Portsmouth

A new competition, a fresh start? No. Tottenhams Carling Cup adventure realistically lasted all but forty four minutes. After that it was back to usual for Spurs fans this season as they seen their side go out of the cup due to bad defending and worse finishing.

The starting eleven of Robinson, Caldwell, Pyo, Gardner, Dawson, Zokora, Malbranque, Jenas, Keane, Defoe and Berbatov did thier struggling manager no favours as they put in a lethargic performance. The level of performance was far from what Hancock would have wanted to witness after Chelsea pumbled Tottenham four one just three days earlier at Stamford Bridge.

Portsmouth waited little or no time in taking the lead although they where lucky to get the chance. When a long ball by Sol Campbell was hoofed forward the danger looked minimal, if it even exsisted but in the wet damp London weather Lee Young Pyo slipped and Kanu was most alert, the Nigerian striker snatching onto the ball before closing in on Robinson and despatching the ball into the goal to give Pompey supporters a reason to find their voice earlier then they would have expected.

As Tottenham have shown this season they have the punches to get back into a fight and did so when Defoes glancing header found Keane who squared up Berbatov who despatched the ball into the net without any problems, but once again it is that knockout blow that Tottenham lack and they where behind within five minutes as Distin scored an unstoppable overhead kick from a Mendes corner.

In a further blow to the men in white Kanu doubled his tally for the night just before half time with a header which crept over Robinsons flayling hands. It was an impossible task for Spurs to overcome as Pompey then made it four with seventeen minutes to go through Sulley Ali Muntari.

Still the Tottenham fans to their credit didnt boo their players or manager of the pitch, but one must guess when their patience will waver and their crys will be heard in the board room as Hancock must be pondering his next move as will Daniel Levy.

English Premier League

White Hart Lane

Tottenham 0 - 0 Manchester City

Tottenham where denied their second win in the Premier League tonight when an injury time header from Jermaine Defoe was ruled offside by referee Mark Clattenburg and at the possibility of being reprimanded Kevin Hancock still let loose saying that the goal should have stood and that Mr. Clattenburg had cost Tottenham three valuable points in their pursuit of Premiership safety.

In a topsy turvy game, it was Tottenham who deserved to come away with the three points but City who strengthened heavily in the summer under new manager Sven Goran Eriksson had German keeper Robert Enke to thank after the ten million pound man kept out wave after wave of Spurs attacks.

Kevin Hancock will be upset not to have seen his side bag all three points as Bent,Keane and Boateng all hit the crossbar. Radek Cerny replaced Paul Robinson in goal after the Englishman had conceded eight goals in his past two outings between the sticks and Cerny had a busy day, noteably tipping over Elanos free kick just before half time which was goal bound. He then made two superb saves one from Richard Dunne the other from Micah Richards to keep Spurs level going into the break.

As much as the game was opening and free flowing the was four bookings, Elano and Sun Jihai for City and the midfield duo of Jenas and Boateng for Tottenham.

Defoe was introduced in the sixty third minute for Bent who couldnt seem to score even if the goal had come to the ball. Defoe immediatly sprang into life and tested Enke from distance with basically his first touch. Defoe would grab a controversial goal just two mintues from time but according to the assistant he was offside and Clattenburg disallowed the goal.

Barclays English Premier League 2007/2008

29th September 2007

Avram Grants Chelsea have stormed to the top of the table suffering only one defeat in eight games, their only low point came at Anfield when Ryan Babel scored the only goal in Liverpools one nil victory.

Both Liverpool and Manchester United are hot on the heels of Chelsea and the season is looking very exciting.

Surprise package Bolton who took a point against Manchester United in a 1-1 draw at home and defeated Arsenal 1-0 at the Emirates are sitting pretty in fifth by virtue of goal difference with the Hammers breathing down their neck.

Two London clubs have been dissapointing with Kevin Hancocks Tottenham sitting in 18th with just one win from their first eight games, a key reason for this would be their shocking defence which has leaked sixteen goals already. Arsenal sit in 11th well off the pace being set by Chelsea,Liverpool and Manchester United but they do have two games in hand which would drastically change the situation if the Gunners can secure maximum points from those games.

Other than that it is pretty much as expected with relegation candidates Fulham, Wigan Athletic , Reading, Derby County and Sunderland all lurking around those three red spots.

SPURS FLY HIGH IN THE REPUBLIC

Uefa Cup 1st Round 2nd Leg

Mestsky Stadion

Mlada Boleslav 1 - 3 Tottenham

Aggregate

3-5

In a cliffhanger game Tottenham Hotspurs have safely negotiated their way into the Uefa cup Group Stage draw to take place tomorrow after a 5-3 aggregate victory over Czech side Mlada Boleslav. In surprisingly good conditions the night started off brilliantly for Spurs as Mlada Boleslav centre back Jiri Trojan was given his marching orders for an elbow on Keane in just the ninth minute.

Spurs immediatly went for the kill and they looked most dangerous from corners. In the first twenty two minutes they racked up four corners which two had resulted in Jermaine Jenas rattleing the bar. After seeing that many Spurs fans where thinking to themselves, once again we play well, create chances dont take them and we will lose.

Step up Michael Dawson. When Jenas won a corner and Lennon whipped it in everybody failed to pick up Dawson except for the travelling Tottenham fans who all rose to their feet in anticapation. Pure Euphoria. It went in. Dawson scored only his second goal in over seventy five appearances.

Their joy only lasted about twenty minutes as a simple snap shot from Petr Vorisek gave Cerny trouble and when the on loan Slavia Prague player spilt the ball, 1st leg two goal hero Alexandre Mendy was on hand to direct the ball home and send the sides in level at half time and Mlada Boleslav within forty five minutes of a place in the Uefa cup Group Stage draw.

At half time Kevin Hancock made two changes, one tactical and one forced. Keane was still groggy from the elbow which seen Jiri Trojan sent off and he was replaced by Darren Bent. Gareth Bale made way for Defoe and Spurs switched from a four four two formation to a three four three in search of that second goal.

As chance after chance slipped away and Vladimer Lukas looked like being a hero again with save after save, in the seventie first minute Hancock rolled his last dice. Steed Malbranque came on for Kevin Prince Boateng and within two minutes the Frenchman had single handledly put Tottenham on the brink of the next round.

When Malbranque picked the ball up in midfield nobody could have forseen his dazzling run which he displayed close control, technical finesse and brut strength to beat three players and last but not least the eye for a killer pass when he threaded the ball into the path of Berbatov who made no mistake with a cool and calm finish sliding the ball straight under the legs of Lukas to send the travelling contingent of Tottenham fans wild.

Just two minutes later and Spurs then made sure of their next round place when half time substitute Defoe latched onto a clearance from Ledley King and placed his shot well beyond Lukas to give Spurs a two goal cushion with just fifteen minutes remaining.

The relief on Hancocks face was all their to see when Stefano Farina blew the full time whistle and Spurs fans will be hoping this is the kick start their season needs for the club to cement its place in the top half of the English Premier League table.

LETS BUILD ON IT BOYS

Tottenham manager Kevin Hancock has pleaded with his players to carry thier stellar Uefa Cup performance against Mlada Boleslav into the remaining thirty Premier League games. Spurs put in a classy performance in the Czech Republic to advance to the Group Stage of the Uefa Cup after a 5-3 aggregate win. Hancock told Sky Sports that he hopes his side can produce the display more often and lift themselves away from the relegation zone.

Quote

Well basically, we need to start winning and picking up points. If we play like we did against Boleslav more often we will win games. Obviously we wanted it a little bit more then what we have shown in the past and it shows. We won 3-1 on the night and it could have been five or six.

In regards to my future, Ive been reassured that its safe. Ive two years to do what the chairman wants and thats basically either deliver Champions League football or continue to qualify for the Uefa Cup. We arent going to be challenging Manchester United and Chelsea for the title just yet. Maybe in five or six years yes with the right management and plan in place.

But for now lets just concentrate on this month and improving our place in the Premier League.

To ask them to do it for thirty games is a bit much :P but I hope they do. If only your management was as good as your story writing you would have won the league by now ;)
