Vlaar to follow Landzaat?
By Soccernet staff
Aug 14, 2008

23 year-old Feyenoord defender Ron Vlaar may follow Danny Landzaat with a move to sc Heerenveen. Heerenveen manager Trond Sollied has stated his interest in the young defender who is worth an estimated Ł2million.
Sollied could be given around Ł3million to spend on Vlaar who has played twice for his country in his short career. Adrie Koster, Feyenoord's recently appointed manager, has said that there has not yet been an offer for Vlaar, but he would give him the option of leaving if the right offer came about.
This story comes just days after Danny Landzaat controversially made the switch to sc Heerenveen. It is expected that a bid will be made by Heerenveen, but whether or not Vlaar will follow in Landzaat's footsteps is not known.
Feyenoord play just the one more pre-season friendly later this week before their season kicks off against PSV in the Dutch Super Cup on 23 August. Koster may well dip into the transfer market once again before the game to strengthen his squad once more.

Vlaar has been at Feyenoord for 3 seasons

Russia put four past Holland in Moscow with goals from Pavlyuchenko, Izmailov, Sychev and Zhirkov. Holland looked wide open at the back in a game which saw 52 attempts on goal with five hitting the back of the net.
On a miserable night in Moscow, Russia completely took apart a shaky Holland defence to win 4-1. Russia boss Guus Hiddink said afterwards that it was a thoroughly enjoyable night which stands his team in good stead ahead of a tough World Cup Qualification Group. "We were brilliant tonight and it was an enjoyable evening," said the joyous Russian. "If we play like that against the likes of Germany and Finland in our group then I can have no complaints."
New Dutch boss Bert van Marwijk saw the result in a different light, stating that there was plenty of work to do ahead of September's and October's qualifiers. "We were poor tonight and the players know that. We must improve if we want to make it to the World Cup Finals, but I'm confident we will. We have work to do but I believe this performance will only make the players stronger."
The game started promisingly for the home side as Roma Pavlyuchenko went close with a left footed volley just six minutes in. Just four minutes later and Pavlyuchenko did find the back of the net. Konstantin Zyryanov's long range effort cracked off the Dutch bar only to fall to Pavlyuchenko who volleyed home the rebound.
Holland's best chance of the first half came through Robin van Persie. Klaas-Jan Huntelaar's pass found van Persie 25 yards out before the Dutch striker shot at goal only to see the ball rattle back off the frame of the goal.
Russia doubled their advantage through a superb Marat Izmailov spinning volley on the half hour mark and continued to pressure the Dutch goal through to half-time.
Holland dominated the chances in the second half but it wasn't until 15 minutes from time when Arjen Robben pulled one back for the visitors. Dirk Kuyt's shot deflected into the path of Robben who hit a first time shot past the Russian keeper from a tight angle.
Despite Holland's glimmer of hope Russia made it 3-1 through a stunning goal from Dmitry Sychev five minutes from time. The victory was secured thanks to Yury Zhirkhov's calm finish in the dying minutes.
Russia face Wales next month in Qualifying Group 4 whilst Holland take on FYR Macedonia in Skopje.

Today Celtic striker Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink put pen to paper in a Ł4.3million move to Eredivisie side Feyenoord. Adrie Koster has said that it is a monumental step forward to help take Feyenoord back to the top of Dutch football.
Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink has completed his move to De Kuip with a contract worth an estimated Ł22,000 per week until the end of the 2010/11 season. Celtic manager Gordon Strachan has stated his appreciation on a Celtic career that netted 28 goals in just 55 appearances. "It's sad to see him go as he is a great asset to Celtic Football Club, but the offer was fair and we felt it right to give him the chance to return to Holland. I'm sure he'll be fantastic in the Eredivisie and I would like to thank him for his performances over the past few seasons."
Feyenoord manager Adrie Koster displayed his joy to reporters outside their training ground after the deal had been announced. "It's a huge signing, and one I hope will have a positive effect on everyone at the club. Jan is a fantastic player who scores a lot of goals and knows the Eredivisie well. This is a big step forward in helping Feyenoord become a top team in Europe."
It is not yet known whether Vennegoor of Hesselink will be available for Feyenoord's Super Cup match with his former side PSV Eindhoven tomorrow afternoon, but he will definitely be ready and waiting for their opening day game with FC Twente on 30 August.

Feyenoord lifted the Dutch Super Cup after a tight 1-0 victory over reigning Eredivisie champions PSV Eindhoven. Jon Dahl Tomasson scored the winning goal to secure Feyenoord's 3rd win in the Super Cup final.
The game was a close affair with both sides unwilling to give any chances away. The first half saw few chances, the best coming from Roy Makaay who hit the post from 10 yards, although it wouldn't have counted due to the striker straying offside.
Both sides came out looking for goals in the second half as the game started to open up a little more, the substitution of Luigi Bruins for new signing Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink showed Feyenoord's intent. The first chance of the second half came through a stunning strike from PSV captain Timmy Simons who saw his riffled shot tipped over by an outstretched Henk Timmer.
A minute later and Fábio Aurélio broke into the PSV box only to be shoved off the ball by Otman Bakkal before he coul pull the ball across for the waiting strikers. The linesman flagged for a penalty and referee Kevin Blom agreed and pointed to the spot. The PSV captain Simons protested to the ref and earned himself a yellow card in the process. Experienced striker Roy Makaay stepped up to take the spot kick, only to have his penalty saved by Andreas Isaksson.
Thankfully for Makaay and Feyenoord they did find the back of the net just 8 minutes later. Giovanni van Bronckhorst's free kick was nodded down by Vennegoor of Hesselink into the path of Tomasson. Tomasson flung his left boot at the ball on the volley leaving Isaksson with no chance as the ball flew into the bottom corner.
The goal sent the Feyenoord fans into raptures, and the feat was almost achieved again, this time by Vennegoor of Hesselink, who shot just inches over from 25 yards out.
With two minutes left and time running out quickly for PSV they created the best chance of the game. Edison Méndez's throw-in was flicked on by Danko Lazovic giving Jérémie Bréchet a golden opportunity to level the scores from 6 yards out. Timmer was quick to react in the Feyenoord goal and blocked the shot to keep his side in front.
Bréchet moments later had another fantastic chance to equalise for PSV. Méndez swung in a delightful cross for Bréchet. Bréchet out-jumped Ron Vlaar and connected with the ball only to see it slide inches past the post.
After the game Feyenoord manager Adrie Koster said he was absolutely delighted with his side's performance and character. "I am over the moon. It was all about the team today and they showed that they can compete at the top. Never mind it being my first game in charge, it was our first game of the season, and we won. The team played brilliantly and we kept PSV from scoring, something that I doubt will happen often this season. It was a close game and both sides had good chances to win it. Thankfully we came out on top and now we shall look ahead to the start of the Eredivisie campaign."
Huub Stevens was gracious in defeat after the final whistle. "Feyenoord played well and deserved to win. We had some good chances but didn't take them. They had a chance and took it, that's why they deserved it. We shall pick ourselves up and concentrate on retaining our Eredivisie crown."

Liverpool and Holland winger Ryan Babel scored the winning goal in a thrilling Olympic Final at the Bird's Nest Stadium in Beijing. Holland defeated Italy 2-1 in a game that saw Holland score in added time to take the game to extra time before scoring in extra time to secure Holland's first ever Olympic win.
In front of a packed Bird's Nest Stadium Holland came from behind against a tough Italian side who fought right to the very whistle. The first goal came in the 76th minute, a long ball forward by Davide Santon landed perfectly in the path of Mario Balotelli who made no mistake with the finish to put Italy ahead with just 16 minutes to go.
Holland pressed forward and finally got their reward with just minutes left on the clock. Nordin Amrabat, who later was given Man of the Match for his outstanding performance, rose above the Italian defenders to head home a superb flighted cross from West Brom defender Gianni Zuiverloon to take the game into extra time.
Just four minutes into extra time and Holland scored, what proved to be, the winning goal. Substitute Daryl Janmaat took on two Italian defenders before sliding the ball across to leave Dutch captain Ryan Babel with a simple tap-in from six yards.
Holland have never won the Olympic Gold before, with a previous highest in 1908 and 1912 when the came in third place.

Who!? I shall check him out if you rate him highly, although I have never heard of him.
At the moment though I think I have a pretty strong team. My 3 strikers are probably 3 of the best in the Eredivisie, and I have arguably the best defensive midfielder in Giovanni van Bronckhorst. Aurelio has been fanatstic and my defence were able to shut out the best Dutch side. I am very confident for the season ahead.
Thanks for the comment. Update hopefully coming later today.

The Netherlands weren't the only nation to pick up tough draws in the UEFA Cup First Round. As mentioned Hertha BSC take on dutch side NEC and Dortmund face Sevilla in the biggest clash of the round. Wolfsburg also have a tough tie in the face of Italian opposition Sampdoria.

Diego Biseswar 71st minute strike was the only thing that separated FC Twente and Feyenoord on the opening day of the 2008/2009 Eredivisie season. FC Twente dominated the game but couldn't find the back of the net despite creating 14 shots on goal.
Neither side looked threatening in the first half although FC Twente dominated possession in front of an expecting home crowd. It wasn't until after half-time that FC Twente started to create some good chances. Henk Timmer single handedly kept Feyenoord in the game with vital saves from Theo Janssen on numerous occasions.
Adrie Koster made the crucial call to swap Jonathan de Guzman for Diego Biseswar just after the hour mark. Biseswar almost made an immediate impact when his long range shot flew inches over the bar.
Two minutes later and he did make an impact. Karim El Ahmadi found space on the right wing before slotting the ball into the path of Biseswar. Biseswar had broken the FC Twente back line and coolly slotted the ball past Sander Boschker to put the visiting side ahead.
This sparked a response from the FC Twente players as they pilled on the pressure in the final 15 minutes. Marko Arnautovic and Wout Brama both had chances to score but couldn't make them count.
Four minutes of added time gave the FC Twente crowd hope but Feyenoord shut up shop to hold onto a gritty 1-0 victory.
Feyenoord manager Adrie Koster described the win as thoroughly satisfying despite playing second fiddle for most of the game. "It was a gutsy performance from the team. We were outplayed by FC Twente but we did what counts the most, putting the ball in the back of the net. It's very satisfying to know that we can win even when we aren't the best team on the pitch. It shows real promise for the long campaign we have ahead of us."
Ex-England manager Steve McLaren was disappointed with the inability to turn chances into goals come the final whistle. "It's a very disappointing loss, one that we need to forget about and move on. We still have a lot of things to work on over the next few weeks before we are up to our best performance. We need to work on converting our chances because that is what wins games."
Next up for Feyenoord is a home game with NAC Breda who face Ajax tomorrow afternoon. FC Twente will travel to current leaders AZ Alkmaar who defeated Sparta 2-1 in their first game of the season.

Holland brushed aside a fairly weak Macedonian side in Skopje, beating them comfortably by three goals to nil. Goals from Rafael van der Vaart, Robin van Persie and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar sealed the victory in the first half.
Holland took the lead just seven minutes in when Macedonian keeper Blagoj Jusuf spilt van Persie's shot leaving van der Vaart with a easy tap-in from 6 yards.
They continued to make chances throughout the first 25 minutes until van Persie made it 2-0 just before the half hour mark. Nigel de Jong sent the ball forward towards van Persie who turned before curling a right footed shot with the outside of his boot into the far corner of the net.
It was all over shortly before the end of the first half. First, good work from van Persie down the right wing gave Arjen Robben the chance to cross. He obliged by lofting the ball into the box for Huntelaar to rise above a Macedonian defender before powering it past the helpless goalkeeper.
Dirk van Marwijk said that he was pleased with the way in which his side applied themselves against a tricky team away from home. "This was always going to be a tough game, so I'm very pleased to come away with a 3-0 win. Teams like Macedonia cannot be underestimated, especially at home, and I thought we handled ourselves perfectly out there today."
Elsewhere in Group 9 Scotland beat Iceland in Reykjavík 1-0. Kris Boyd grabbed the winning goal in the 19th minute to give Scotland two wins from two.
Holland face Iceland at home in a months time, whilst Scotland take on Norway. October 15 sees Holland travel to Norway and Iceland host Macedonia.

Feyenoord wasted chance upon chance at home to NAC Breda to leave them with just a point when a comfortable three looked on the cards. Adrie Koster stated after the game that his team really needs to win these types of games if they want to fight for the Eredivisie title this season.
In total Feyenoord hit 17 shots on goal with only 6 of them testing the keeper. NAC Breda on the other hand were restricted to just the one shot at goal, a blocked shot, in a game that was dominated from start to finish by the home side.
The best chance of the first half fell to Fábio Aurélio. A ball from Biseswar gave Aurélio room in a crowded box to fire off a shot from just 10 yards. Breda keeper Johan Jansen, who was later given the man of the match award, was equal to Aurélio's left footed shot, pushing it away from danger.
Roy Makaay was surprisingly wasteful all game, taking shots from as far out as 35 yards without hitting the target.
Feyenoord were a shadow of their first half selves in the second half, creating only a few chances. Despite masses of pressure in the final ten minutes Breda held on for a gritty point.
Adrie Koster was very disappointed come the final whistle. "It's a poor result considering we've dominated the whole ninety minutes. We didn't take our chances, and that has seriously cost us. We must win games like this if we are to challenge for the league title this season."
Feyenoord now sit in 7th place after two games on 4 points. Ajax, AZ Almaar and NEC all have full points from their two games and top the table. Feyenoord now take on Vit. Setúbal in the first leg of their first round UEFA Cup match before travelling to Den Haag who currently have taken one point from two games.
