    Red Devils see off Villains
Young and Hernandez on target in 2-0 victory

Ashley Young and Javier Hernandez proved too sharp for Aston Villa in a game which saw the Red Devils lose their skipper Nemanja Vidic to a knee injury and Rafael sent off.

Young cut inside from the left before crashing a shot past Shay Given into the roof of the net for United's opener against his former employees. Just past the hour Young set up the second, crossing for Hernandez to net. Aston Villa struggled to create chances and David De Gea was rarely troubled in the Villa goal. The visitors, who have won at Old Trafford just twice since 1983, were unable to replicate the type of threat that Young and Hernandez offered United as Villa slipped to a fourth successive defeat in the Premier League.

Scott Sinclair occasionally threatened with his speed, while Darrent Bent appealed for a second-half penalty when he went to ground after a challenge from Rio Ferdinand. And Villa, who won 9 corners to United's three, did improve after the introduction of Gabriel Agbonlahor but the fact that it took until the 72nd minute for De Gea to make a serious save - first from Charles N'Zogbia and then from Bent - tells its own story.

De Gea made a couple more stoppage-time saves, while Aston Villa also went close after a corner, which having evaded a packed penalty area was cleared off the line by Anderson. The Brazilian midfielder had an impressive game for United and his passing and vision stood out throughout.

It was Anderson who released Young for his goal with a long-range curling pass after Patrice Evra had dispossessed Stephen Ireland. As Hernandez pulled away to the far post, Young opted to go it alone, motoring past Richard Dunne before unleashing a shot into the roof of the net.

Early in the second half, Young's willingness to take on the Aston Villa defence almost gave him a second goal but his shot went narrowly wide after a fine run. Hernandez's ability to drift away from his markers offered Villa a different challenge to contend with. The Mexican striker had come close with a first-half header from a Nani free-kick and after a neat piece of ball juggling and fierce shot, Hernandez was then denied by a superb reaction save from Given.

The former Man City keeper had a busy afternoon and during a sustained period of second-half United pressure he saved superbly to deny Tom Cleverley and then Wayne Rooney. But there was nothing he could do about United's second when Young crossed from the left and Hernandez finished with a precision volley.

Just a couple of minutes later, Vidic had to be stretched off as the Serbian landed awkwardly on his knee after winning a header agianst Darren Bent around his penalty box. Five minutes later, things got worse for United as Rafael took his second booking for a rash challenge on Sinclair and the hosts had to play the remaining five minutes or so with 10 men.

United held on and in stoppage time De Gea was called into action when he got down quickly to save Sinclair's defected shot and then safely gathered another Bent effort. It is a defeat - given the way that Villa struggled to create chances - that will provide plenty for Alex McLeish to think about, particularly after he joined Villa from arch rivals Birmingham City in the summer.

    Valencia 1-1 Manchester United

    Posted Image

Manchester United's UEFA Champions League struggles against Spanish sides continued as Michael Carrick's second-half penalty earned the visitors a Group B point in Spain.

Valencia took the lead on the half-hour mark when Pablo Hernandez converted a penalty following a challenge by Chris Smalling on Roberto Saldado. Manchester United struggled to break through a resolute Valencia defence and despite monopolising possession Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's team were forced to rely on a spot kick of their own, converted by Michael Carrick on 60 minutes.

The Premier League champions have won just twice in 19 matches in Spain against Spanish opposition, and will look to return to winning ways in their double-header against Trabzonspor, while Valencia meet FC Kobenhavn.

Valencia coach Unai Emery, like many team do against Manchester United, set his stall out to frustrate the visitors, a tactic which worked from the outset. On the few occasions the Red Devils managed to breach the wall of orange, poor finishing let them down. Antonio Valencia was culpable on more than one occasion, first firing against the bar before contriving to miss from close range following slick approach play involving Phil Jones and Carrick.

The home side were content to defend in numbers, but their only foray deep into opposition territory was rewarded as the lively Soldado was felled by Smalling, allowing winger Hernandez to score his first goal of the campaign.

Valencia continued to thwart the visitors after the break, so much so that Solskjaer sent on Wayne Rooney, rested for the game. Just as he was preparing to enter the fray, however, Adil Rami fouled Danny Welbeck and Carrick struck Manchester United's equaliser from the spot.

The introduction of Rooney and Hernandez gave the visitors a dynamism they had been lacking as they sought to attack at pace. Yet for all their domination the hosts could so easily have stolen the points with four minutes to go when substitute Aritz Aduriz hit the post from close range following Giovani dos Santos' cross.

    United trio ruled out
Trio should be fit for Aston Villa clash

Nani, Nemanja Vidic and Ashley Young have been ruled out of Manchester United's UEFA Champions League clash with Valencia.

Portuguese winger Nani picked up a knee injury late on during Manchester United's 2-1 defeat to Liverpool on Saturday and he missed training on Monday. England star Ashley Young will also miss the trip to Spain along with skipper Vidic meaning Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will have to shuffle his pack. Vidic has an ankle problem sustained in a challenge with Liverpool's Lucas Leiva, while Ashley Young is struggling with a muscle strain.

Solskjaer is hopeful all three will recover in time to be fit for this weekend's visit of Aston Villa to Old Trafford. "Vidic, Young and Nani are not fit," said Solskjaer. "All three have a chance for the weekend. Nani could make the game. He has more than a 50-50 chance."
