Hibernian great Eddie Turnbull dies

Former Hibernian player and manager Eddie Turnbull has passed away at the age of 88.
During the late 1940s and 1950s, he played in the Famous Five forward line along with Gordon Smith, Willie Ormond, Bobby Johnstone and Lawrie Reilly at Hibernian. In that time, he won three league titles and became the first British player to score in a European club competition.
After winning 9 caps for Scotland and scoring 150 goals in 349 games for Hibernian he retired from playing in 1959. He first managed Queen's Park between 1963 and 1965 before moving to manage Aberdeen were he had success, winning the Scottish Cup in 1970 and finishing second in the league in 1971. He left to rejoin his former club Hibernian in 1971 but this time as manager where he would stay with 1980 before leaving football management.
During his time as Hibernian manager he won the 1972 Scottish League Cup final against Celtic as well as masterminded their most famous victory, a 7–0 win over their Edinburgh derby rivals Heart of Midlothian on 1 January 1973. The stylish early-70s team were known as Turnbull's Tornadoes and included the likes of John Brownlie, Pat Stanton and Alex Cropley.
If it was not for Jock Stein's all-conquering Celtic side, the Hibs trophy cabinet would surely have been busier - they were league runners-up in 1974 and '75.
Jim Jefferies and Craig Brown have already stated how respected and highly regarded Turnbull was especially by the older generation of managers some of which included the likes of Craig Brown, Archie Knox and Walter Smith who were coached by Turnbull when they were starting out on their coaching careers.

"He was an outstanding Hibernian man,
"I met him at our last home game and had a chat with him.
"You would love to be able to pick his brains because of his outstanding knowledge of the game.
"To be remembered as he was as a player and a manager and to have the history with the club he had, it's a tremendous thing to have.
"I have said to the players that we are going to do well in dedication to Eddie"
