    The Inaugural Season

    Team: Woking

    Nation: England

    League: Conference South (lv 6)

    Cups: FA Cup, FA Trophy

I started my first ever season in football management at Conference South (6th tier) side Woking. 'The Cards', as they are known by the fans are a semi-pro outfit & play at the 6,036 capacity Kingfield Stadium in Woking - a stadium well suited for the teams current level of play. Immediately I cut back on wages, releasing all who were deemed as deadwood to the club & replacing them with shrewd signings on non-contract terms to create a strong squad well below the wage budget total.

Pre season went well with the highlight being a 5:1 victory over Surrey rivals (& my favorite club) Kingstonian of the Isthmian League Premier Division. Kingfield Stadium was at near-capacity for the visit of Scottish Premier League giants Celtic in the last friendly of the summer. The Bhoys fielded a strong side & comfortably won the game 7:0.

An opening day victory over Truro City started Woking's rise up the table & saw my team enter a battle for to spot with Welling United after a 3 victories from 3 games. Welling, however, defeated Woking 4:3 at their Park View Road ground & claimed top spot for their own but Woking continued to build up a considerable gap between themselves & 3rd place. A run to the FA Cup 1st Round boosted the club finances & ended with a respectable 3:1 defeat away at League One side Notts County.

Woking continued to chase league leaders Welling United throughout the 2nd half of the season & even sat top of the table at various stages but inconsistency set in with a shock 6:0 defeat at mid table Salisbury City on the back of 13 unbeaten matches. Woking have had a good history in the FA Trophy, winning the competition for a record 3 times in the past & this is something we continued this season. Chester, Great Wakering Rovers & Gloucester City fell before Woking bettered 2 sides from the Conference National: 3:2 away at Kidderminster Harriers & 1:0 away at Stockport County. Another Conference National side, Fleetwood Town, awaited Woking in the Semi Final but the well-financed northern outfit won 2:1 over 2 legs.

The Conference South season culminated with Woking still in with a shot of winning the league but falling short on match day 41 out of 42, following defeat to Eastbourne Borough. The Play Off's awaited Woking as we finished the season in 2nd place with a 10 point lead over 3rd place Dover Athletic. Eastleigh were disposed of 3:1 in the 1st leg & 1:0 in the 2nd leg before Conference National football was achieved with a last minute goal in a 2:1 victory over Dover Athletic in front of 3,908 people at Kingfield.
