bmg's British Steel Challenge

I fancy a hard challenge and I got one! As stated here, I am going to try and win every trophy available in England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland & Republic of Ireland. Its the first time i've ever attempted this challenge, so I shall look forward to the journey ahead!

The Manager
I have based my manager around myself and made him as realistic as possible. I know random bits of German and Italian, but not enough for me to class them as an additional language.



As the rules state, I have started with no coaching qualifications and a sunday league reputation. That has left me with these attributes.


I forgot to screenshot the details on the game when I was setting it up. If you did the same, don't worry. Just click on the FM button at the top and then go on "Game Status" so you can find this:

Gendo is the one and only Susie member to complete this challenge, the rest (me included) have faltered in the past. Good luck with this because it's requires a load of patience.

First Club
The rules state I can start unemployed or begin at a club. I have chosen the latter and went to Ireland for my first attempt.



I chose Wexford Youths because they were the only team in the Irish 2nd tier I hadn't heard of before. It really was that simple.


I would update you on the clubs history, but it literally has none. The only thing worth noting is that they came runner up to Derry CIty in the EA Sports Cup back in 2008. Hopefully when I come to leave, they'll have a few more trophies in the cabinet!

We have a decent squad with a lot of good young players. This is helpful as the board have already told me that they want to see young players coming through and breaking into the first team. I have to say that managing a team with "Youths" in its name is already confusing me. I keep thinking i'm looking at the youth team when i'm actually looking at the first team.


But without a doubt, this guy is our best player. Apparently he is already considered to be an icon at the club, despite being only 24 years old. Will need him to be at his best this season to help give me a good start to this challenge.

I'm very interested in anyone who takes on this task. It requires a lot of patience at times; it took me 51 seasons to nab all the trophies, several where I came up with nothing. Believe in yourself, and prepare for the long hual.

1st Signing
We were in desperate need of an attacking midfielder. Luckily I found this guy on the free agents list and snapped him up straight away. His best position is MC, but I plan on playing him at AMC.

His name is Ryan Coombes by the way, I just noticed that I missed his name out of the screenshot.

I've been busy last few days, hoping to get some of this done this week!

Good luck mate, I've just started this challenge myself, although I'm not doing too well and have been sacked by my first club after just three months!

Thanks! Just had a look at yours, didn't realise I wasn't the only one attempting this. I thought England would be a tricky place to start, which is why I went for Ireland. The difference in quality between the bottom and top teams isn't too big, so I thought i'd get going here and tick ROI and NI off as quickly as possible. Gendo took 51 seasons to complete this, so that is my target to beat!

Media Prediction

The media don't rate our chances very well. If our friendly results are anything to go by, then i'm sure we wont end up 7th!

Friendly Results
I thought i'd test our squad out against top tier oppostion. We did well in all 4 games, giving Cork, Shamrock, Drogheda and Limerick good games and seemed to match them stride for stride. We can be pleased that none of them were able to keep a clean sheet against us. The last friendly was just a game to test things and boost morale a bit. Our first competitive game of the season is at home to Premier Division side Limerick in the EA Sports Cup 1st round.

Looks like you've got your work cut out according to the media!

Competitive Debut
My first competitive game in this challenge was against Limerick in the EA Sports Cup. Before the game, Limericks manager said that it would be an easy victory for his team. Lets just say I said something along the lines of "Don't be silly old chap" and leave it at that!

We had a great start to the game and we were rewarded for that when Gary Delaney put us 1-0 up in the first quarter of an hour. But then it all went wrong when Wall got a straight red after 29 minutes. As expected, Limerick got back into the game just before half time. They then took the lead in the second half and it looked like they were going to hold on for a 2-1 win until Nolan popped up with a late goal to send the game into extra time. Unfortunatly being a man down meant that our players were quite tired and Limerick went 3-2 up. Another red card for us in the 109th minute pretty much ended the game. Overall, it was a good display, despite 2 red cards.

I really dont see how they came to that conclusion. This squad certainly isn't the 7th best in the league, but we shall see who is correct as the season is now getting underway!

Start of The Season

As reported previously, we did unfortunatly lose my first game in charge. But since then, everything has been going along nicely. A few performances weren't too great, like the draw with Shamtock B after being 2-0 up, but overall we can be happy with only 1 league defeat so far. I wonder what the media think now?



We actually sit top of the league! But as you can see, over half of the league is separated by just 3 points. Its tough, but i'm positive we can win this league and get a trophy in my first season!



Other News
After the 3-3 draw with Waterford, I wasn't too pleased with the referee. I was asked about his performance in the game and....well just check out the red boxes!

Well my only signing and one of our best players is out for a very long time.

Contract Extension
The board offered me a new deal, and I instantly accepted it. Nice easy negotiations.

You're in Ireland (same goes for Northern Ireland as well), it's not criticising, it's just friendly banter.

Well, my laptops being a twat . It just went crazy yesterday and froze. I turned it back on and its now asking me for a password, although I've never needed one. I tried getting into it every way I can think of or find on the internet. Currently doing a system restore which will probably take a while, when that's done i'll try and rescue some games and FM saves. If it decides to start not working after that then i'll probably just reset the whole thing to factory condition.

EDIT: Or I might just buy a new one from the black friday sales.

EDIT 2: System restore failed. Going to try and restore the thing back to factory settings. If I encounter problems there, then i'm pretty much screwed to be honest

Gutted Hope you get it fixed soon.

On the bright side, at least it didn't happen to a save you put 20 seasons into.

There is a small chance that what i'm currently doing will work. If it does, hopefully any issues with the laptop will be gone, and there might be a possibility that my saves could be rescued. I'm getting it to backup certain files as the sytem resets itself.

EDIT: Wow it managed to recover 1.86gb of stuff to backup and my memory stick has 1.88gb free space. Lucky.

The good news: The laptop has successfully been restored to factory settings. I don't have to buy a new one, although I may do sometime in the future.

The bad news: I don't think my FM saves got rescued Still, I was only about half way through the first season so its not like I lost much as Gendo said. It is sad to see my BMG season become history though, but at least I documented it as a career on here so I can always look at that.

Installing anti virus software now and will then set everything up, again. Would be good if I can get my British Steel Challenge restarted this week, maybe tonight or tomorrow depending on how everything goes.
