Tips for starting a long career game

Just wandering if anybody has any tips for starting a long career game. I constantly find myself starting a new game, maybe enjoying it for a while and then either want to move clubs for no reason or just start a brand new game.

What do people do to keep going?

I'm in the same boat as you, The Ice Man. Planning a save with a French or Spanish team (if I find a solution to my FM problem) and focus on youth all the way. I think its important to find out what really makes you happy when playing Football Manager - for me its developing home grown players. Considering Villarreal or Rennes at the moment.

Another idea I've had is to build yourself up as a manager and try to win as many leagues and cups as possible. Your level of patience will decide how good your first team will be of course.

I'm also in the same boat as everyone else

I'm starting to lose interest in any of my saves. Currently giving Gladbach a go at the moment and hoping this will be my long term save.

Honestly I just start a save and set myself the target of playing 6-12 months.

If I'm feeling it then I continue, if not I probably try something else out.

I personally find it very hard to plan a career out beforehand, just doesn't get me interested.

Start unemployed with Sunday League experience and no coaching badges, load up several leagues and go on a long term journeyman save because that's similar to what I have been doing and "twenty two years" later, I'm still enjoying the save - started with Kvik Halden in Norway and now I'm w/ Lugano in Switzerland.

So I'm trying to figure out which team to start a new career with...

Only considering teams in Spain tbh and finding Real Betis, Villarreal, Deportivo Aláves, Las Palmas and Ponferradina most interesting. Any suggestions?

One of my favourite ever saves was with Real Oviedo. Big club with a decent history. I liked the fact there are a few players who came through their academy that you will know; Michu, Juan Mata and Santi Cazorla. Infact, I'm pretty sure that all of them actually stepped in to provide the club with money/publicity when they were on the verge of going bust a couple of years ago.

I think in around 9 seasons I became a regular in the top three. To be honest operating at the same level as Barca and Real without the same revenue streams was really difficult and I almost bankrupt my club trying to keep up.

Speaking from my own personal view and experience there has to be something to the club that will keep you there for a number of years. A lower league side you can lead to glory, a fallen giant, a club you can relate to outside the game, creating your own rules for the game such as allowing yourself to only play with a domestic based squad etc.

All of which are scenarios that appeals to me personally. Don't think I have started out as a team from any of the big leagues except Serie A for the last couple of FM's, as I don't really see the long term fun and challenge in that. Ranheim, Portsmouth, Anorthosis Famagusta and now Auxerre have done just that on the other hand.

Pacing the amount of time you play the save too is important, rush into it to much and you can burn yourself out to much. Seen it happen here to many times. For me it is about setting a goal and then starting from the bottom to get there. My little adventure is in Asia is just that. It is an untapped market for talent and I enjoyed my little journeys there when doing my Pentagon attempts. I have some idea's for future long term saves, ones that will broaden my knowledge of other footballing countries.

This is a big one for me, setting rules that the game isn't really aware of. I like to restrict myself and add to the challenge of the game

This is a great one too, finding places you've never been or have no knowledge of can make it more fun. For example if I'm in England I know the games I should be winning and get angry if I don't. In somewhere like Korea I haven't got a clue so nothing phases me and I comfortably tick through games without any problems!

If you're going on a long career I'd advocate split-saving to keep the enjoyment. By that I mean saving your file under a different name before taking a job, that way if it flops and you lose interest in the save, you can go back to a more enjoyable time in the save and keep it going from there. Saves a total restart and has kept me going a few times like in my Inter career

3 things for me

1. get the league setup right think what u want and what the point of the save is will drive this.

2. write down the aims of the save, for example win world cup or develop players from academy,

3. put your own rules in for example only sign players under 20 or from a certain nationality. Or you must move club if you get offered a club with bigger financials or something.
