LIVERPOOL SHOCKED AS BENITEZ RESIGNS

Rafael Benitez has sensationally quit Liverpool this morning after club owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett allowed Xabi Alonso to complete his move to Real Madrid. The club owners have made their statement on the day's matters and have assured the supporters of Liverpool that the controversial resignation of Benitez will not harm the club's progress.

American Tom Hicks said:

"It's said news of course but we respect his decision. We believe that the sale of Alonso was needed with our financial problems and we still stand by our decision and that it was the correct one. We may need to sell one or two players more but we will not sell any other key players.

"We had to sell Alonso because the money offered was too good to refuse, you can't turn away that amount of money with the financial crisis we were finding ourselves in. The money from this transfer helps us out a great deal. Anyone who thinks otherwise or put in our situation would have turned down the situation would have soon seen the reprecussions.

"Myself and George would both like to take this opportunity to assure Liverpool supporters that we will make the right choice with our next appointment and will freeze all transfer dealings until we have a manager. Also, we would like to assure you that the morale among the players is very high."

Rafael Benitez was appointed manager of Liverpool in 2004. He instantly gained legend status as he guided Liverpool to the name of 'Champions of Europe', staging a remarkable comeback in Instanbul against the mighty Italians, AC Milan. The following season saw the club hit a late equaliser in the FA Cup final, finishing as winners after a dramatic penalty shoot out.

A trip back to the UEFA Champions League final came in 2007 where AC Milan extracted revenge from two seasons beforehand. Liverpool have yet to see another trophy since and supporters have been continuously aggrieved by the club's performances in the English Premier League, a second placed finish after being top for so long epitomising the club's domestic failure.

Many have said that Benitez' choice to leave is a blessing. Many believe it could spark something horrible. Early favourites for the job include Chelsea flop Felipe Scolari who is believed to want another crack at English football whilst former Barcelona manager Frank Rijkaard, the favourite, would welcome a return to football.

Saturday 20 February 2010

Ashen faced on screen, Jeff Stelling was unhappy when Neal Trotman scored the second and as it turned out; decisive ; Huddersfield Town goal at Victoria Park today.

"We're rubbish." Stelling muttered on screen, his disappointment clear for all the viewers to see.

Up the M1 in a living room in South Yorkshire, Mark Duell knew what Stelling was going through. It was very painful for all Pools supporters whether they be actually at the game in question, or as exiled as what Mark was. A few months ago, Pools were handily placed in the table and on the fringes of making the play-offs but now they were slipping towards the drop zone.

The game ended 2-0 to the Terriers, and the result was enough to propel Huddersfield into the play-offs after a ninth game unbeaten whilst nosedived Pools onto the edge of the cliff known as the relegation zone. With that in mind Mark contemplated the painful thought of seeing a scrap for survival when he went "back home" for the Colchester game at the Vic in a couple of months. Surely, they could get out of this.

Mark switched off the television, and headed off for his fix of ice hockey and a chance to meet up with his mates from Guildford who were in town for that evening's game. The evening, result wise, didn't improve Mark's mood. The Scimitars, his side, had lost 7-6 after penalty shots to the Flames after leading 6-3 with one regulation time period of 20 minutes left on the clock. Although the banter with Matt, Emma and the other Guildford mates of his was good. He didn't even have to buy one drink either, as Matt and Steve did the honours (obviously remembering that Mark had bought them last time out).

An uneventful day, although he needed now was for football on Sunday for Crombie to go the wrong way as well and it would have been definitely the weekend from hell.

LIVERPOOL DROP MORE POINTS AT ANFIELD

Tottenham increased the pressure on under performing Liverpool, and their manager Rafa Benitez, as they held the home side to a 1-1 draw at Anfield.

Steven Gerrard rescued Liverpool again with an equalizer after Peter Crouch scored against his former employers, just after half time. Liverpool now sit 7th, and the early season tittle challengers are a massive 14 points of Arsenal at the top.

The result increases pressure on Reds boss, Rafael Benitez who many believe should be replaced. The North West side has already lost 8 times this season, and have been largely dissapointing after a promising second place last season.

The game itself was full of action, both teams out for the three points, which resulted in a great game for the neutrals.

It was Liverpool that seemed to want it more in the first half, and perhaps should have been ahead, after 5 minutes. However Heurelho Gomes managed to keep them at bay.

And Tottenham managed to put salt in the wounds. Playing up front for Spurs was two of Liverpool's past - Robbie Keane and Peter Crouch, both declared surplus to requirements at Anfield by Benitez. And it was the pair that got the goal. Perhaps in a different way then expected.

A long ball over the top, was knocked down by Robbie Keane, right into the path of Crouch. The tall striker found some space and fired low, past Pepe Reina in goal. Rafa Benitez not amused.

However Liverpool weren't behind for long, and it was for their captain again to get them out of trouble. Fernando Torres was put through, but his weak shot was blocked by Gomes. However he didn't catch it properly, and the ball dropped to Gerrard. And with an open goal, from 6 yards out, there was only one outcome.

From then on Liverpool looked the hungrier side, and really should have won it. Even up until the last minute they pushed on, and when Torres was through, away and clear and put the ball past Gomes, they thought they did. However assistant had his flag up - although it looked like Torres might have had a case to appeal.

So where next for Liverpool? And nevertheless Tottenham, who sit nicely in 3rd - can they finally break the Top Four voodoo?

Are You A Villain?

Last Updated: Tuesday 7th July 2009

O'NEILL: WE CAN BREAK THE TOP FOUR

After two consecutive sixth place finishes Aston Villa fans will again this season be hoping their side can improve and push to break into the top four. Whilst a small squad was struck by injuries and suspensions causing them to lose ground on the teams above them it seems that the club is better equipped now to make their greatest siege on the last Champions League spot.

Villa boss Martin O'Neill spoke today to Sky Sports reporter Chris Shields about the upcoming season, the Northern Irish born manager confident that his side has the ability to break the top four for the first time since Everton in 2005.

"I think we have a fantastic chance to really mount our best challenge yet. We must have a good pre season and if there are players that will improve the club then we may dip into the transfer market but there is still over a month to go until the window is shut. I certainly believe we have the squad to break the top four."

Despite losing Gareth Barry to the money of Manchester City O'Neill is confident his side will not suffer from their former captains departure to a club that has to be perceived as the biggest threat to breaking the top four of Chelsea, Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal.

"Gareth was a terrific servant to this club and he can hold his head up very high. At the end of the day however the project over at City is very appealing to players and I don't blame Gareth for wanting to give it a shot. Of course you can't replace a player of his quality but the team will be fine I'm sure of it, no player is bigger then a club, the club will always continue."

Villa kick off the new season with a home game against Wigan at Villa Park on the fifteenth of August following their pre season tour of Holland where they will take on Helmond Sport, Fortuna Sittard, Sc Cambuur and FC Emmen.

The Trials Of Tyneside

From the diary of Charles Crook
First Team Coach - Newcastle United

Monday May 25th 2009

Yesterday the team went to Villa Park for the final game of the 2008/09 season, knowing we had to get a result and hope it was better than the result our relegation rivals Hull City got at home to a Manchester United side with one eye on the Champions League Final in Rome against Barcelona.

On paper, my dear diary, you would expect us to achieve our goal. Our goal was survival in the Premier League.

It's been a long season my dear diary. You know how much I've moaned about this disaster of a season here, from the moment Keegan went to when Joe Kinnear fell out with Charles N'Zogbia while selling Shay Given and the fact we've only had one win under Alan Shearer.

And yet, as our bus approached Villa Park yesterday afternoon, we seemed cautioushly optimistic. Sure, we'd only won 7 of the previous 37 Premier League matches, but the Sharer administration had a better morale than the previous 3 managers and we knew that a draw could do us good.

Into the dressing room, then a warm-up on a sunny day in Birmingham. When we played here last season, we were 1-0 up at half-time and looking good. Then we spectaculary imploded in the second half, conceding 4, losing goalkeeper Shay Given (how we miss him) and continuing a winless run under Keegan.

This time, we were hoping for different things. Up went the teamsheet. Alan chose the following 11 and subs:

Steve HARPER
David EDGAR - Fabricio COLOCCINI - Steven TAYLOR - Damien DUFF
Danny GUTHRIE - Nicky BUTT - Kevin NOLAN - Peter LOVENKRADS
Mark VIDUKA - Obafemi MARTINS

Subs Bench:
Tim KRUL, Jose ENRIQUE, Ryan TAYLOR, Alan SMITH, JONAS Gutierrez, Alan SMITH, Michael OWEN, Shola AMEOBI

Having had Sebastien Bassong red-carded in the defeat by Fulham last week, Al decided to bring in Fabricio Coloccini. Habib Beye's injury meant David Edgar got the right-back slot in what might be his final Toon appearance, while the other change saw Peter Lovenkrads replace Jonas Gutierrez on the left.

A rousing team talk was delivered to a barrage of noise from 3,000 travelling Newcastle United fans. Indeed the 3,000 visitors drowned out a speech from Martin Laursen - former Aston Villa defender who retired recently due to a serious knee injury.

Soon, it was it. It was the moment where we either fought for our Premier League lives or sunk down to the Coca-Cola Championship. Martins and Nolan kicked us off, and the game was underway.

It's fair to say we had some early chances. Barring an early chance for John Carew, we had the best of the play with Duff having a go denied by Brad Friedel and, agonisingly, Carlos Cuellar denied Steven Taylor on the line.

We then had two glorious opportunities to take the lead - but like he's done a lot recently, Martins didn't make anything of them. His first go was from 12 yards that went over, the second from 25 that was straight at Friedel.

And then, a miracle. The news filtered down to us that Manchester United had scored at the KC Stadium to go 1-0! Excellent, we all thought - 1-0 would be enough to keep us in the Premier League.

But in the 37th minute - DISASTER!
A corner was only half cleared out to Gareth Barry, and his strike was going wide only for the unlucky Damien Duff to get in the way and Villa to go 1-0 up! AARRGGHH!

It was ok though. As long as United remained 1-0 up over Hull and we scored, we would still be a Premier League club for next season.

Halftime arrived, just as Friedel denied Martins. We knew we still had a chance of remaining in the Premier League. Big Al encouraged the lads that they "only needed one goal, and that we could do it."

I on te other hand wasn't convinced. When we'd gone 1-0 down earlier in the season, we'd often fallen apart and I was indeed dreading more goals to flow past Steve Harper.

But this was different. This was Shearer's Toon. We'd been 1-0 down at home to Middlesbrough and won 3-1, in fantastic style. We showed resilience to get a draw at Stoke (should've been a win - ruddy linesman!) and we would've got an equaliser vs Fulham hadn't Bassong committed defensive suicide.

My paranoia was nearly confirmed on 53. Shearer could be seen going mental as we gave their little whippet Gabby Agbonlahor too much time and if he'd bothered with a decent cross, then Carew would've had a fantastic chance for 2.

Shearer's first change saw Jose Enrique replace Lovenkrads. Personally I'd have bought on Jonas Gutierrez for Nicky Butt as the skipper was being bypassed completley but Al is the manager. And Duff is wasted at left-back, so it allowed him to come in in his proper slot - possibly a go at redemption following the own goal.

Michael Owen and Shola Ameobi were soon thrown on. Could they get us that elusive goal, dear diary?

Well, in the end, no.

To be far too Ameobi, he was trying. He fashioned two half-chances but neither hit the target. We thought we could've got it - all Jose Enrique's cross needed was a boot. But noone got to it.

Injury time - and all that happened was that we earned our 8th red of the season when David Edgar bought down Ashley Young, having already been yellowed. Off he went.

And soon referee Chris Foy blew the whistle on the match, the season and 16 years of Premier League football for Newcastle United.

None of us can believe what had happened. We don't want to believe it. But it's too late. We've been relegated and only God knows what will happen to us.

Least of all Alan. This club means the world to him. And to be in charge of the team as it's gone down - the manager that effectively relegates the Toon... I really feel for him. It must be hard. None of us imagined this in April when he came in.

In the dressing room Alan was very, very angry. Why should we blame him?
This team has been so sub-standard this season. This is a team that entered the season worthy of a top half finish, boasting players like Given, Milner, N'Zogbia, Owen, Martins et all and looking forward to the season.
But since August, it's been a disaster. You don't need me to tell you again what happened, but it's come to this.

Who knows what will happen to us, dear diary?
Next time I'm writing here, I could be out of a job. I could be manager. We could be so light on players I could even be putting on my boots for next season's opener, even though I retired 3 years ago with serious knee injuries.

Blog Style Story

Hi everyone!

Some of you may know me some not, but I have decided to return with another story with the new football manager (Fm 10).

This story will be a blog type story, for many reasons the major one being that I just dont have the time to write a full length one. Also I would like to offer a different style of story to the one's already on here.

Hopefully we can draw more people back and make this section the best and most popular again!!

Ana. xx

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For my blog story I opted to choose a team in the first division of Spain (Sort of like the Championship in England) and decided on the very small club of Real Union. I was hoping that this would be quite interesting for the readers to follow a lower league story in another country.

The club history isnt so great, as they have never played in the top flight of Spanish football. However they have won the Spanish cup 4 times in 1913, 1918, 1924 and 1927 they also won the Spanish second divison in 2009.

So lets begin by analysing the first team squad!

Goalkeepers.

As a newly promoted side both keepers are fairly weak. However Jauregi is slightly better than his rival Xabier Otermin so Jauregi will be by number 1!

Defenders.

Unfortunatly our weakest area of the team, many players are old and slow or just not good enough at this level.

The standout is on loan defender Pedro Alcala.

He has great height at 6' 5'' inches and is defensivly very good.

Right back Inaki Descarga, has great work rate and will be a solid player in this division.

At left back we will have to use a 16 year old youth prospect Gorka Velasco who may have a bright future. He has come through the acadamy, and is already looking like a first team player.

Zahaitz Gurrutxaga will be the second centre back, but is the weakest player of the four.

The rest are really poor so will be sold or released to save some money.

Midfield.

Iosu Iglesias - A solid midfielder who can also play at the back, good team work and work rate makes him a solid player for my team.

Jagoba Beobide - Another solid defense midfield player, who again is a solid player at this level. He is only 22 so could be a good player in the future.

Angel Montoro - Our second loan player, and by far the best midfielder we have. On loan from Valencia he will be a key man for this squad.

Felix Quero - Unpredictable winger with good pace and dribbling skills. Single minded with only 8 for team work, but should add some needed speed into our team.

Eneko Romo - The final 'decent' midfield player we have, good all round player but will be a back up to Montoro.

Juan Angel Seguro - Decent left winger but lacks any real quality to be a danger this season.

Forwards.

5 of them and by far our strongest area of the team. The first is our best forward at the club.

Gorka Brit - has had many clubs but his pace and quality means he is easily the best player at the club. Valued at £625k he is the most valuable asset the club has. Any chance of a good season will depend on his goals.

Paul Abasolo - Not a good finisher he does bring pace and offers something different to the forward line.

Juan Dominguez - Confident goalscorer can play in midfield or out wide, so offers plenty of options good pace makes him one of the better player at Real Union.

Inaki Goikoetzea - A more physical forward who is stonger than all the other forwards at the club. However he small size 5' 11'' means he wont make a good target striker.

And finally the record scorer in Union history! Sergio Francisco, brings an excellent goal record and a man who can forge a great partnership with Gorka Brit. Up their with the better players at the club.

So thats the squad, I will be looking to bring in a few more players hopefully to strengthen the defence and midfield. Next post will include any transfers and our season expectations!

Simon Grayson this morning shocked Leeds United supporters by handing in his notice, as manager of the West Yorkshire club.

Grayson has given personal problems to why he has departed Elland Road, after less than a year in charge. Grayson took charge after Ken Bates sacked previous manager Gary McAllister after a string of poor results, including an embarrassing 1-0 defeat to non-league side Histon. Under Simon Grayson Leeds only lost five league games out of 25 league games, he did lose to Millwall away in the play-off semi finals though. He has also made summer signings for this season, with the likes of Patrick Kisnorbo, Jason Crowe, Michael Doyle and Shane Higgs joining the club.

Simon Grayson on departing Leeds United. “I’d like to thank Leeds United for giving me this chance of managing the team I support, unfortunately I could not get us promoted last season which am disappointed about. Due to personal problems over the summer I have decided to leave, but I’ll follow all the results and will return to Elland Road to watch the games until I get a new job.”

Ridsdale Steps Down as Cardiff Chairman

Peter Ridsdale has today morning announced that he is stepping down as the chairman of Cardiff City. The Cardiff City chairman has been under the scanner for past few weeks now on charges of tax evasion. Though during the press conference he announced that legal action had nothing to do with him resigning from the post.

Ridsdale who previously had been owner of Leeds and Barnsley football clubs has been criticised for his mismanagement of funds at the previous clubs. Cardiff fans have been claiming that nothing has changed in his way of management as debts are piling up for the club. Ridsdale always had a bitter relationship with the Cardiff City faithfuls. They have been calling for him to step down from the post and had been against him even when he took over the club. It is believed that one of the directors will take his place as the chairman.

Since the announcement this morning there have been scenes of jubilation outside club grounds which some observers have announced bordered on craziness. Matthew Smith, an Cardiff City Fan, said " I could not have wished for a better day. I hate Ridsdale and was always against him. That guy has no knowledge of running a club. He took Leeds and Barnsley to the brink of death and Cardiff was following the same path. We have been saved in the nick of time. Our efforts to pressurize him have paid off."

Ridsdale announced in the conference, "I am not stepping down out of my own wishes and not because the fans have been asking me too. I have got bigger things coming up my radar and I need to focus my energy on the same. I wish Cardiff loads of success."

The Black Stars

This is a short story to try and help me get back into story writing. It is inspired by Tarrantino's Forza Italia. Enjoy.
GHANA'S JOURNEY REPLAYED

Ghana vs Rwanda - MATCH ONE

76 mins: Bwalya runs with the ball through the centre with Muntari hot on his heels. Muntari drags Bwalya down and he's already been booked. The referee reaches for his pocket and he's surely off. He is, second yellow and the Ghana superstar has been sent off with his team level at 1-1.

90 mins: Sarpei has the ball on the left. Great pass to Pantsil's feet but he has his back to goal. Good turn by Pantsil, he's got Amoah waiting in the middle. He chips it in. AMOAH! GOAL! He's won it for Ghana with a volley from six yards out. Ghana win with ten men, but only just.

GHANA 2-1 Rwanda

Nigeria vs Ghana - MATCH TWO

59 mins: The ball is played forward by Babayaro. Mensah and Yakubu challlenge for it but Mensah comfortably wins the header. The ball falls to Barusso and Mensah's stayed down. It looks like he's landed on his arm awkwardly. He's in serious pain and I doubt he's going to continue. That's terrible news for Ghana as they lose their captain and it looks like a serious injury that may keep him out for the rest of the tournament.

82 mins: Free kick to Nigeria. It's about 30 yards out, maybe more. Akabueze looks like he's going to lay it off to Babayaro to have a crack. He does and Babayaro smashes that. GOAL! what a goal by Babayaro, absolutely stunning strike. Kingston couldn't do anything about that in the Ghana goal. It's 2-1.

89 mins: Essien collects the ball just inside his own half. He finds Amoah who quickly lays it into Barusso's path. Barusso looks up and spots Asamoah making the run. That's a brilliant pass. Asamoah collects. One touch and bang. Saved. But Tagoe is there. GOAL! Tagoe levels with the simplist of tap-ins. What a game, now at 2-2.

Nigeria 2-2 Ghana

Ghana vs Guinea - MATCH THREE

16 mins: Boateng lays it off to pantsil on the right. Pantsil takes his time before darting down the wing. He cuts the ball back to Boateng. Will he shoot? No. GOAL! Barusso scores thanks to great awareness from Boateng with that little touch to set him up. Ghana take the lead.

68 mins: Boateng has plenty of time in midfield. He find Tagoe on the edge of the area. There's no option for the striker forcing him to turn away from goal and lay it back to Boateng. Boateng takes a touch and curls a ball towards Asamoah. Asamoah chests it down, will this be his hat-trick. GOAL! It is. What a calm finish from the 21 year old. Just his 11th international appearance. 5-1 to Ghana.

GHANA 6-1 Guinea

Ghana vs Ivory Coast - QUARTER-FINAL

3 mins: Tagoe looks to take on Eboué down the left. Still no challenge from Eboue as Tagoe reaches the byline. Tagoe takes a touch back onto his right and swings in the cross. Easily headed away by Meite. It drops to Essien 25-30 yards out. One touch. Shoots. GOAL! Oh what a hit by Essien. 25 yards out and he's drilled it Copa. Unstoppable. What a start for Ghana.

GHANA 1-0 Ivory Coast

Ghana vs Cameroon - SEMI-FINAL

44 mins: The corner is going to be taken by Addo. Just a few minutes before half time. If Ghana could get a goal now they would take a deserved half time lead. Addo curls it into the box. Amoah goes up for it. GOAL! Deflected in by Olembé on the post. It may have been Bassong who actually headed that ball back towards his own goal. Either way it's an own goal and Ghana lead 1-0.

92 mins: Ghana will be in no rush to take this free kick. Dicoh lays it to Boateng. He takes a touch and chips it forward. Gyan chases it. He's beaten the defender. This could be the goal that seals it. GOAL! Ghana are going to the final. Gyan slots it past the keeper. All the players and subs rush to congratulate Gyan. It will be Ghana's first final for 18 years.

GHANA 2-0 Cameroon

Ghana vs South Africa - FINAL

90 mins: Fortune will take the corner. Ghana have dominated from the start but can South Africa get the late winner? In it comes. Dikgacoi. GOAL! They've scored. Dikgacoi rises above Muntari and heads it in. The Ghana players cannot believe it. The game looked to be theirs, they didn't take their chances and now they've lost it all. South Africa are ecstatic. It looks like South Africa will have their second African Cup of Nations win, 14 years after their first.

BREAKING NEWS: HUDDERSFIELD TOWN SET FOR BILLIONAIRE TAKEOVER

In the past hour, news has been breaking from West Yorkshire that Coca-Cola League One side Huddersfield Town is to be taken over by British Billionaire and major UK retail chief, Sir Philip Green.

Green, 57, owner of Arcadia Group, the largest group of retailers in the UK, is believed to have struck a deal with current Terriers owner and chairman Dean Hoyle. If reports are to believed the deal could be completed by the end of play today.

Green, friend of Everton chief Bill Kenwright, has said to have been in the market to purchase a football club in England for many years, and reports in 2004 linked Green with a possible takeover of fierce rivals Leeds United, before financial meldown struck the whites.

Green boasts a wealth of £4.4bn and was recently named the 9th wealthiest man in the UK. Green who was knighted in June 2006 also owns 12% of the UK clothing retail market. Brands which fall under The Arcadia Group include, Debenhams, BHS, Topshop, Wallis and Selfridges.

If his takeover is successful it is not yet known whether current Town boss, Lee Clark will remain his position, however reports have also suggested that who ever is in charge come the start of the new season will have £10m war chest at his disposal.

This will be a major boost to Huddersfield Town, and they will instantly become a major player in a league that features newly relegated, Norwich City, Charlton Athletic, Southampton and not to mention fallen giants and rivals Leeds United. Add to the fact that last years beaten play off finalists Millwall remain in League One as do promotion hopefuls, MK Dons, Colchester United and Swindon Town, the competition to be promoted looks set to be fierce.

If the deal is struck, Huddersfield fans will finally begin to dream that this could be the start of something magical that will emphasize their ambition to become one of the biggest clubs in the country. The facilities are already in the place, and the next step of the project looks to be fully underway.

The summer of 2009 looks set to be a landmark occasion in the proud history of Huddersfield Town.

More to follow throughout the day.
