A few hours later and the two young players turned up at the hotel, Foppe De Haan waiting for them near the bar told them to sit down.
Foppe De Haan: Boys, where were you?
Fabian Delph: When gaffer?
Foppe De Haan: Last night, you didn’t go back to your hotel room?
Gavin Rothery: We stayed in Jermaine’s (Beckford) room.
Foppe De Haan: And why? You could of said something.
Gavin Rothery: We was watching some DVD’s that he brought over, we were talking about watching them all summer and we only really got the chance last night.
Foppe De Haan: So if I asked Jermaine Beckford where you two were last night he’d say in his room? So where was you this morning?
Fabian Delph: Yes sir, we went out to get breakfast, it’s just a misunderstanding really, next time we’ll let you know what we are doing.
Foppe De Haan: I wouldn’t of been worried if it was the older lads but you two are young, Fabian you’re fifteen years of age. Anyway boys, sorry, you’re right it was a misunderstanding, I’ll see you both in training tomorrow morning.
The two lads walked away and Foppe De Haan looked very relieved, he was glad that the two boys were safe.

Only half an hour later and Foppe De Haan was approached by Shaun Derry.
He looked at Foppe guiltily and took a deep breath.
Shaun Derry: I want to leave the club.
Foppe De Haan called Shaun into his room.

Shaun Derry was in Foppe De Haan‘s hotel room after announcing he would like to leave the club. Shaun Derry had already that day been released from a Seattle prison after a brawl in a casino.
Foppe De Haan: Shaun, what’s wrong?
Shaun Derry: I want to leave gaffer.
Foppe De Haan: Any particular reason?
Shaun Derry: I just don’t feel happy here at the moment.
Foppe De Haan: Yes, at the moment you don’t, so why at this particular time are you unhappy at the club?
Shaun Derry: It’s ever since half way through last season. Things here at the club were bad, we were in the relegation places and wins were very rare. When I was at home I was really down and sometimes as sad as it sounds cried myself to sleep. I also at the time was in the middle of a divorce so it was affecting my game. I was eventually dropped.
Foppe De Haan: Well of course, I’m not going to say that’s a good thing. I understand that you haven’t had the best of years lately but everything will change, I’m sure of that.
Shaun Derry: I just feel I need something new, a fresh start.
Foppe De Haan: Ok, I will be honest with you. I don’t want you to leave, you are very talented player and our captain so it will be a blow if you leave the club but if you wish to leave I will not stand in your way.
Shaun Derry: Would it be ok to have an extra few days off to clear my head and think things through and see if I change my mind at all?
Foppe De Haan: Well, I would rather have you training, but with the state your in I guess it wouldn’t hurt for you to have some time off so yeah sure, I’ll give you until the weekend.
Shaun Derry: Thanks Foppe, Dennis Wise would never be as understanding as you.
Foppe De Haan: Well, hopefully I’ll be able to work with you a lot longer.
The days went past and training happened to be quite a laugh for the lads, then came the game with the New York Metrostars in Seattle on a very warm evening, Shaun and Mark were watching at home . . .

The players walked into the dressing room after the final whistle buoyant and over the moon at their thrashing of MLS side New York Metrostars. Foppe De Haan walked in with a gleaming smile on his face and began to speak.
Foppe De Haan: Boys, that was brilliant. You controlled the game and to me you looked look a team playing in the Premier league, with a performance like that tonight you could easily compete against the likes of Blackburn Rovers and Liverpool. The young players, you have proven today that I ay not need to do such a huge transfer window rampage, I can now count on you guys to come in and deliver. Well done guys, very well done.
The players: Wheeeeeeey!

Shaun and Mark were at home, they had watched the game live and seemed very pleased.
Shaun: Well that was impressive.
Mark: Yes it was, I’m pretty confident that we can get promotion this season.
Shaun: You can’t base how a season will go on one game Mark, it could be a one-off.
Mark: True, but if they can play like that week in, week out they won’t have many problems now will they?
Shaun: Yeah right, anyway we’ve stayed up all night watching this and we need some rest, we have to be at Elland Road early in the morning to unveil the three new signings.
Mark: This is a really exciting time for the club isn’t it, I can’t wait to unveil the new players.

In a hotel outside the city of Leeds.
Greg Barker: So guys, what do you think of playing for a team like that?
New signing #1: I err guess that this season will be a big err, how do you say it, success?
Greg Barker: Right you are, you made the right coice in leaving Sevilla mate, you’re going to transform the midfield this season. You are going to excite the Leeds fans when they see you ball juggling when we unveil you and the two other players tomorrow.

July 2007

Shaun, Mark and Greg were at Elland Road the following day to introduce the three players asked for by Foppe De Haan who was over in the States with the squad who were still celebrating in training their four goals to one demolition job of the New York Metrostars.
Greg Barker: Welcome to Elland Road again and I am delighted to reveal our three new signings here at Leeds United, Alejandro Alfaro, Matt Lockwood and Christian Vieri.
The reporters gasp at Vieri’s name being said by Greg Barker.
Greg Barker: Yes, you hear me right, Christian Vieri is a Leeds player and here they are.
Alfaro, Lockwood and Vieri all walk out of the tunnel one by one with a Leeds shirt on and a football, some fans in the stands who had been welcomed in applauding the new signings.
Greg Barker: So, let me introduce them to you. Alejandro Alfaro has joined from Sevilla. He is a versatile midfielder and is nineteen years of age, Matt Lockwood has come from Nottingham Forest for around fifty-thousand pounds, he is a left back and will be first choice at that position and Christian Vieri, well you all know who Christian is. You can have half an hour to ask them questions and then they will be off to join the squad in America. Thank you for coming.
The reporters soon rush around the players to ask them questions.
Reporter Leeds Standard: Alejandro, Sevilla for Leeds, La Liga for league one, how did you make a big decision like this?
Alejandro Alfaro: It was a big decision yes, but I wasn’t going to get first team football at Sevilla so I thought moving here would be the right thing to do. I will play football here and I am confident that we can get promotion this season. I’m also looking forward to working with Foppe De Haan, he is a good coach and I cannot wait to meet him.
Reporter Sky Sports News: Matt Lockwood, Leeds United are a big club, do you think you will be able to hold down a regular starting place here?
Matt Lockwood: Yes I believe I can, I’m one of two left backs here and I wouldn’t of been bought if I wasn’t needed. I actually feel really out of place here today because I’m next to Christian Vieri and a top Spanish youngster *laughs*
Reporter BBC: Christian Vieri, you’re a big player and you’ve chosen to play here in league one, surely a bad career move?
Christian Vieri: No it’s not, I’m getting old and I have previously said I’ve wanted to play for England and maybe in a few years time I will be playing in the premier league here with Leeds.
Reporter BBC: But why Leeds United?
Christian Vieri: I am friends with Foppe De Haan and he has big plans for the club and I want ton be part of them.
The players were unveiled, the fans buoyant, the board impressed and the player over in the USA were excited . . .
