Mark Cook - Tuesday 29th July 2008
Trio of young starlets join Arsenal
Promising youngster Jack Rodwell joined Arsenal from Everton in £5million deal
Days after his appointment Mark Morrison has delved into the transfer market and signed a further three players as he looks to build on the groundwork left behind by Arsene Wenger. The Scotsman defied all the rumours and opted for young talent instead of big name signings as he began to make his mark on the Gunners.
Jack Rodwell, Henri Saivet and Cheik M’Bengue were all unveiled in Arsenal shirts today the trio of talent cost a hefty £10.6million over half of Morrison’s transfer budget for the whole season, many fans have been confused as neither player seems ready for first team action but a buoyant Morrison was clearly pleased with his work.
‘We’ve signed future stars for the club, of course none of them are ready for first team action but in a season or two we will have huge talents on our hand who can replace some of the aging players in our squad.’
Jack Rodwell switched the Blue of Everton for the red of Arsenal for a hefty £5million but Morrison feels he still got him at a snip ‘I think Jack is a huge talent, he is only a year away from first team action I feel. It was important to get him now and not next year so we could help develop him and if we went for him next year he could have been easily double the amount we have paid.’
Many are surprised that David Moyes allowed one of his brightest talents to leave the club, the seventeen year old is a natural central defender but is more than capable with a defensive and central midfield position ‘Everton are my boyhood heroes and it isn’t easy to leave them, I think the club needed the money and I want to have a long successful career in football and I think I can get that with Arsenal.’
£2.6million was spent on capturing French starlet Henri Saivet from Bordeaux, the young striker is seen as a long term replacement for Adebayor and co ‘Arsenal are a club known for getting the best out of youngster so I am very happy to move. I feel very comfortable here at the club due to the amount of French players at the club so I am ready to get to work on the training pitches and work towards a first team place in the future.’
Cheik M’Bengue is relatively unknown in Britain but is Morrison’s long term replacement for fan favourite Gael Clichy. The twenty year old left back cost £3million from French side Toulouse, M’Bengue is the clubs second choice leftback with Traore on loan at Portsmouth so the fans may see the young Frenchman in action sooner rather than later if Morrison continues the youth player policy in the league cup, ‘Gael Clichy is a brilliant player, instead of moaning about a lack of first team football I want to learn from him and become a better player. I want to work hard and my reward will be to pull on an Arsenal jersey.’ M’Bengue said today which will no doubt endear him to the Gunners.
Morrison shrugged off questions that the first team squad had not been bolstered by an experienced signing ‘If I had injuries I would happily put any of these players out in my first team, I wouldn’t wish an injury on any player but if it happens and these lads play you will see the talent I have bought.’

Really, really good stuff mate, a lot of great vocabulary and the writing is superb, three very good signings and getting Walcott on board for five years is a smart move, he'll be brilliant in the game as he gets older.

Trio of signings unveiled
£5million Mollo joins Caraglio and Giuliano in Gunners youth ranks
The press were hailed once more to the Emirates as another trio of players were brought in by new Gunners gaffer Morrison. Again no big name signings were in sight but it seems the Arsenal fans would have been happy with even a vaguely noticeable face to ease the last of their fears over the rookie manager in charge.
‘Cesc Fabregas was not a big name when he came to this club he was just a kid, look what he has turned out to be. The fans have to accept that big names are not what this club is about, we don’t buy them we make them.’ Morrison said once again growing angered over the persistence of journalists yearning for a big name to report about.
The most expensive signing of the day was Yohan Mollo signed from Monaco for a hefty £5million, the French youngster is capable of playing on either wing and is highly regarded in France while being completely unknown in Britain. Mollo will be allowed to mature at the club and find the potential ability that forced Morrison to fork out £5million for him ‘It was an easy decision for me to come to Arsenal, you look at the stadium, training facilities and the squad and you know you are at a huge club. I know I will be in the youth team but I’ve seen them train and the talent in the likes of John Fleck, Henri Saivet, Jack Wilshere and more is outstanding so I’m looking forward to my future with Arsenal.’
Milton Caraglio jetted in from Argentina after Central allowed him to depart for a meagre £130,000 despite the beaming monarchy of being dubbed the next Mario Kempes. Kempes was recently named one of the greatest living players by Pele and in Argentina many people expect such achievements from Caraglio ‘Kempes is a big name to take on but he has the ability, he also has height standing over six foot and presence and a huge work ethic something Kempes never had so I expect great things.’
Another South American joined Mollo and Caraglio when Giuliano completed a £1.5million transfer from Internacional, the eighteen year old attacking midfielder is at home behind the strikers or on the right wing providing the manager with more options on how to deploy him. Again Giuliano is practically unknown on British soil but he is highly rated in his homeland of Brazil becoming a firm fixture of countries youth side with twenty caps and four goals to his name so far, ‘I really think we have brought in a huge talent who will become a big player for this club, with his stunning technical ability and pace he will be a huge threat to the opposition.’
Morrison has now signed eight new players at the Emirates but none of them seem ready for first team action so will Arsenal finish a fourth season without silverware ‘People forget that Arsene brought in two huge talents before he left. Samir Nasri and Andrei Arshavin were both signed and I have worked with them since they arrived and they are more than ready to play their part in the first team.’

Arsenal 4 -0 Vit. Guimaraes
By David McIntyre
van Persie bagged Arsenal's third goal of the game
Arsenal headed into their first competitive match under new manager Mark Morrison tonight, it was imperative the London club got a good result for their new manager as Champions League football has become standard at the Emirates for the fans.
Samir Nasri and Aaron Ramey two Wenger acquisitions were both handed first team starts by Morrison with a string of new faces on the bench eager to make debuts. It took Arsenal just one minute to get the goals rolling when Emmanuel Adebayor bagged his first goal of the season. Adebayor came short for a Sagna throw in before floating the ball out to the opposite wing, Clichy took the ball and floated in a brilliant cross at the back post for the Adebayor run, the Togolese striker latched onto the ball with a stunning diving header to send the Emirates into raptures of celebrations with just fifty-six seconds gone.
It only took ten minutes for Arsenal to double their lead when William Gallas chipped in with a rare goal, once again Adebayor came short for a throw in this time from Clichy on the left wing. Adebayor used his strength to fend off tackles from the Guimaraes defence before laying it off to Gallas who stood at the edge of the box, Gallas unleashed a low drive which took a lucky deflection to ensure it slipped into the net.
The second half approached and Arsenal did not relent, the home side pushed on and bagged a third less than a minute after the restart, Adebayor leaped up in a congested box to nod the ball to Nasri the little Frenchman played a nice short pass to Van Persie who with a drop off his shoulder lost his marker and smashed the ball hard across the keeper and straight into the net, a typical powerful effort from the Dutch striker.
Sixty-five minutes in three new faces were introduced to the home crowd when Arshavin, Giuliano and Fleck all entered the fray. It would be sixteen year old Fleck who lit up the crowd when just five minutes into his Arsenal debut the former Rangers player bagged his first goal for his new club. Nasri picked out Fleck at the edge of the box after a string of Arsenal passes, the young Scotsman took a touch to take it by his marker and get a clear sight on goal before curling in a low powerful effort into the bottom corner. A sublime goal and the perfect way to introduce himself to the Arsenal fans.

Some more good signings, should all do well for you and the youth system as Arsenal is strong, good to see you making it stronger. I beat Vit. Guimaraes with Spurs so expected you to, good result nonetheless.

England > Premier League > Arsenal
Wigan 0 -1 Arsenal
By David McIntyre
Nasri celebrates his first goal for Arsenal
After an impressive but gruelling midweek performance in the Champions league Arsenal would be kicking off their Premiership campaign with a not so easy away fixture to Wigan. Morrison seemed to be a genuine fan of Bruce and his side as he praised the club during his pre-match press conference ‘Steve Bruce has done a fantastic job with what is available to him, no side will go to the JJB stadium this year and get an easy ride, us included.’ But the niceties would halt at the kick off.
Morrison was right and perhaps used the press conference to flare up a fighting spirit in his men as they looked to defy their new manager who was all too happy to talk up Wigan. The home side did not shrink away at the London giants but instead unleashed a relentless barrage on the Arsenal goal, both sides threw caution to the wind and free flowing football was on offer for all to see.
A lack of match sharpness seemed to be the only reason for the lack of goals, come ninety minutes a cricket like score should have been on display but one goal would prove to be enough to send Arsenal back to the capital with all three points.
The match was in a firm deadlock and it was Samir Nasri who picked it open with a stunning goal his first in the red of Arsenal. Five yards out of the box and Arsenal were handed a freekick and slight of stature Nasri stepped up, his shot floated up and over the wall perfectly and the ball right on queue began to plummet before smashing into the back of Chris Kirkland’s net, a stunning display of technical ability and not a bad Premier league debut for Nasri who basked the adulation of the away support.
Just twenty-one minutes in and Arsenal were up one nil, it seemed the homeside had two options either lie down to Arsenal and finish off with a four-nil scoreline or worse but Wigan had the scent of a draw and hounded it for the rest of the match. Wigan constantly poured forward N’Zogbia’s pace was key as they sought a way past a resolute Arsenal defence, but it never came.
At the end of ninety minutes Arsenal had shown a grit and determination to win that was often lacking under the Wenger era, Morrison showed today he is all too happy for his players to get dirty and escape with one goal victories as long as the job is done and Arsenal done just that today. A solid defence and a combative midfield mixed in with a little bit of magic from Samir Nasri ensured Morrison got a victory on the opening day of the season.
Arsenal manager Mark Morrison
‘Before the game kicked off I said the players and the press that this would not be easy and it wasn’t, Wigan came at us and had a real go and with a bit of old fashion hard work we’ve managed to escape with all three points. Our away form this season will be imperative to us winning anything and we are going to have to accept one-nil wins and scrappy matches.’
Wigan manager Steve Bruce
‘Arsenal are a team packed with talent and it will always be difficult to get a result against them, perhaps if we had taken our chances it would have been a different story today. There is definitely some positives from today, we played our kind of game and didn’t allow Arsenal to play there’s if we continue to play like this we will have a good season.’
Wigan: Kirkland, Melchiot, Figueroa, Boyce, Bramble, Koumas, N’Zogbia (Montrose ’82), Cattermole, Scharner (Brown ’74), Kapo, Zaki (Mido ’74)

Arsenal: Almunia, Sagna, Clichy, Toure, Gallas, Walcott (Ramsey ’52), Arshavin, Fabregas (Vela ’60), Nasri, Adebayor, van Persie (Bendtner ’83)

Another good update and a decent win, I've had those games where you feel a goal just won't come because you've missed so many chances. Your vocab is strong as always too.

Marquinhos signs for Gunners while Mollo goes on loan
Marquinhos joins Giuliano in move from Internacional to Arsenal
Mark Morrison has delved into South America once more bringing in another Brazilian player dubbed the next Zinho. Marquinhos is a small, light, nimble footed attacking player and it has resulted in him being compared to world cup winning compatriot Zinho.
Arsenal have now raided Brazilian side Internacional twice this season the first signing being Giuliano and now Marquinhos who cost only £850,000 although Morrison is expecting him to provide cover for the first team while pushing for his own place ‘Marquinhos is a brilliant talent but I don’t want people to get carried away with this Zinho label, he is his own player and I’ll want him to play his own way.’ Morrison stated today.
‘Arsenal are a well known club around the world including here in Brazil so I know I’m moving to a big club. I’m looking forward to this next stage in my career and turning myself into a first team regular here at the Emirates.’
As the young Brazilian was coming in through the doors of the Emirates he may well have passed Yohan Mollo who was heading out on loan after signing just twelve days ago. The £5million signing is joining Championship side Watford on loan for six months, fans have been confused that Morrison blew a quarter of his budget on Mollo only to farm him out to the Championship ‘Mollo can play on either wing but competition is tight at the club in both of these positions, we have Arshavin, Nasri, Walcott, van Persie and Vela amongst others who can play on either wing. Because of this the most important thing is for Yohan to get some first team football.’
Morrison rates Mollo so highly that he has inserted a clause allowing him to recall the French winger at any point of the six month loan move. Despite only spending twelve days at the club before being sent out Mollo was in high spirits about the move ‘I’m looking forward on going to Watford on loan because it will help me as an Arsenal player. The manager explained I was still young and he wanted me to get some experience and I would get that with Watford, my dream is still to pull on the Arsenal jersey and I hope to do it after my loan move.’

I really like this story, your writing is very nice and its these types of stories I enjoy reading
Also... Marquinhos plays for Palmeiras not Internacional.
He could become a decent signing. Can't see him making it in real-life though, Ive watched him alot of times and he's not got enough talent IMO. Plus he fights like a girl.

Thanks for the comment mate glad you are enjoying the story, Palmeiras do have a Marquinhos but so do Internacional and it is him I signed, although I think I've used the wrong picture. The one you are talking about is still at Palmeiras and my scouts said he'll become a leading striker but I won't pay 9.5million for him, Monaco, Ajax and PSV are all interested in him.
Hope you keep reading mate.

Arsenal 1 - 1 Chelsea
By David McIntyre
Adebayor bagged a vital equalising goal for the Gunners today
Morrison today would face his first real test as Arsenal manager when Guus Hiddink brought his Chelsea side to the Emirates today with Nicolas Anelka charged with the task of gunning down his old side today as he was selected in the only striking berth on offer in the Chelsea starting lineup.
Man of the match Joe Cole opened the scoring with twenty minutes on the clock with a goal that will surely be in contention for goal of the season. Chelsea were given a freekick forty yards out providing relative safety on the Arsenal goal or so everyone thought, Almunia and his defence lined up expecting Cole to whip in a cross only to surprise everyone as he unleashed a stunning forty yard venomous strike that curled its way straight into the top corner. Almunia was left rooted to the spot until he managed to haul himself into the net to retrieve the ball, a stunning effort from Cole.
Chelsea would stay in front for only nine minutes before Arsenal drew level through Emmanuel Adebayor. Nasri played a neat low ball to the Togolese striker at the near post but he was unable to get his shot off, instead the striker showed some nimble footwork to turn his marker and jink his way to the penalty spot before driving the ball low through a congested box and straight past Cech sending the Emirates into raptures.
Both sides pushed for that all important winning goal, gaps opened on both sides and it became a counter attacking frenzy, some heroic defending and top notch goalkeeping was the only reason for such a low scoreline today. Come the end of ninety minutes a draw was the fair result but Chelsea will be the happiest side after gaining a draw at the Emirates meaning the gunners will have it all to do at Stamford Bridge later in the season.
Arsenal manager Mark Morrison
‘If you want to win the Premiership you have to beat teams like Chelsea, Manchester United and Liverpool at home. We couldn’t do that today sadly, we did play well and it is encouraging that we came back from being behind to get a draw.’
Chelsea manager Guus Hiddink
‘Both teams are evenly matched and it always seemed like it would be a draw which I think was a fair result on the day. I am happy to come here and get a point against Arsenal because not a lot of teams will do that this season.’

Vit Guimaraes 1 - 1 Arsenal
By David McIntyre
Adebayor bagged the first goal of the game for Arsenal
With a four goal cushion from the first leg it looked like Arsenal were already safely through to the group stages before this match even kicked off. The Portuguese side only had pride to play for with the pressure off surely they would perform better than in the first leg.
Things started off well for Arsenal when Adebayor continued a strong start to the season in front of goal, Sagna surged down the right wing before cutting the ball to Fabregas in the centre of the park. The Spaniard slipped in a defence splitting pass that he does so often to the feet of Adebayor, the Togolese striker took a touch before he rifled the ball home from close range.
Five goals down and Guimaraes were out the tie but they came back into the match, on the half hour mark they levelled the scoring. It was a stunning fluke goal that brought the teams level, Henrique swung in a corner the curl on the ball was a joy to behold as it swung out and over Clichy at the back post, Arsenal manager Mark Morrison even managed to have a smile and applaud the effort safe in the knowledge his team were through.
Guimaraes went on the offensive with a new found vigour, the Portuguese side had plenty of gumption but just could not break down a resilient Arsenal. The London side sat back and played some simple football to run down the clock to ensure progression to the group stages of the Champions League.
Arsenal manager Mark Morrison
‘Well it was a routine performance, a stunning freak goal has brought things level but we were always in control. The most important thing is we didn’t get beat today and that is going to keep our confidence high.’
Vit Guimaraes: Nilson, Andrezinho, Amaral, Sereno, Danilo (Silva ’72), Barreto (Gregory ’90), Desmarets, Wenio, Henrique, Coral (Martins ’72), Roberto
