Feyenoord start search for new manager
Jun 28 2008

van Marwijk now takes over as Dutch national coach

Feyenoord have started their search for a new manager after Bert van Marwijk left his post to manage the Dutch national side. Speculation is rife throughout the media with many big names being linked with taking the job that has seen five managers come and go since they last won the Eredivisie ten years ago.

Bert van Marwijk was confirmed as the replacement of Marco van Basten as Dutch national manager in February and could only take Feyenoord to a 6th place finish in his final few months in charge. Despite finishing 6th they did pick up a piece of silverware, picking up the KNVB Cup with a 2-0 victory over Roda JC.

van Marwijk now takes over the national side following their 3-1 quarter-final defeat to Russia, van Basten's last act as Holland manager. van Marwijk had two managerial spells at Feyenoord between 2000 and 2004, and 2007 and 2008. He won the UEFA Cup with Feyenoord in 2002 and added a KNVB Cup winners medal to that last season.

The last Eredivisie title won by Feyenoord was back in 1999 with Leo Beenhakker in charge. Since then Feyenoord have finished highest under van Marwijk in 2001 finishing in second place, a massive 17 points off winners PSV Eindhoven. The closest they have come in ten years was in 2003, again under van Marwijk, finishing 4 points behind PSV in third place.

Feyenoord are now set to look big for van Marwijk's replacement with the club's 100 year anniversary this season. Ex-Feyenoord and Holland player Johan Cruyff has been touted as a favourite, alongside ex-Chelsea boss Avram Grant and Lawrie Sanchez who could follow fellow Brit Steve McLaren to the Eredivisie.

Another man who could be in the hunt for the job is Adrie Koster, who was replaced by Marco van Basten as Ajax manager a few days ago. His appointment could cause a stir with the Feyenoord fans, but he is likely to be high on the list after being heavily linked with Feyenoord during his spell as manager of feeder club Excelsior.

Feyenoord chairman Dick van Well is expected to release a statement regarding the manager position over the next few days.

Avram not interested in Feyenoord

By Soccernet staff

Jun 30, 2008 Posted Image

Avram Grant has said that he is not at all interested in the job vacancy at Feyenoord after he was linked with the job earlier in the week. The ex-Chelsea boss has also stated that it will be another season before he is ready to come back into football.

Grant told press outside his home that he was not yet ready to make a comeback to football after he was dismissed as Chelsea manager in May 2008. "I am enjoying life at home with my family and I am not yet ready to make a comeback. Maybe next season I will comeback, but not now."

When asked whether he had been approached in the off-season he reacted in a similar manor. "I have had a few offers, but like I say, I will not be back for a while yet. Feyenoord haven't approached me, and I do not wish to be linked with them."

With still no word from Feyenoord chairman Dick van Well, speculation continues to circle as to who will take charge at Feijenoord Stadion. Johan Cruyff and Adrie Koster are the bookies favourites, but there is also a chance that Alan Pardew and current Roda JC boss Raymond Atteveld could be offered the job over the next few weeks.

van Well: "Manager talks are in progress"
Jul 1 2008

Feyenoord chairman Dick van Well has told the media that they are currently in talks to find a replacement for Bert van Marwijk, who recently left to manage the Dutch national side.

Speculation has circled around the Feyenoord job over the past few days with many big names such as Johan Cruyff and Avram Grant being linked with the vacant position. Just a day after Avram Grant ruled himself out of the running, the chairman of Feyenoord, Dick van Well, has announced that the club are in talks with someone over the possibility of becomming the new Feyenoord coach.

"We have not yet signed a manager for the new season," said van Well, "but we are currently in talks to try and fill the position. It is vital we get this position filled so that the new manager can bond with the players and get the team to gel ahead of a very important season after last years disappointment."

van Well gave nothing away when asked who was being targetted for the job. "I will not release any details on who we are in talks with. I will say that this man is our number one manager who we want to manage the team this season."

The bookies still have Dutch legend Johan Cruyff as favourites for the job, but Adrie Koster could still be a high possibility. Other names such as currently unemployed Steve Cotterill from England, and another ex-Feyenoord player, Ruud Gullit, currently manager of MLS side LA Galaxy, has also been linked with the job.

Koster takes Feyenoord job

Adrie Koster leaves Ajax to join rival club Feyenoord

Former Ajax manager Adrie Koster has been appointed as the new manager of Feyenoord after he accepted a one year deal earlier today. Koster was one of many linked with the job after Bert van Marwijk's move to the national side.

Feyenoord's official website released the news earlier today, with a press conference unveiling Koster as the new manager set for tomorrow. Dirk van Well, chairman of Feyenoord, has released a statement on the website stating "Koster is the perfect man for the job."

The 54 year-old manager is an experienced face in Dutch football, having played for Roda JC and PSV Eindhoven between 1977 and 1983, as well as appearing for the national side on three occassions. He has made a career for himself as a manager, starting off at PSV Eindhoven and Willem II as assistant coaches before he took the Willem II job in 1990. Over the next 13 years he managed various clubs in Holland, including Feyenoord's feeder club Excelsior, before landing the youth coach position at Ajax. In 2007 he took the first team manager's position, but was recently replaced by Marco van Basten after his stint as the national team manager. In Koster's only season as Ajax boss he took the team to second place in the league, and following the play-offs, qualified them for the UEFA Cup.

We have yet to see the reaction from the Feyenoord fans, who may feel appointing someone from their rival club is a poor choice. The pressure on Koster from both the fans and the club as whole will be high, and only time will tell whether Koster is the man to lead Feyenoord back to the glory days.

Angry Fan arrested at Feyenoord press conference
The revealing of new boss Adrie Koster turned into chaos...

2 Jul 2008

Earlier today the police arrested a man after he broke into the press conference unveiling Feyenoord's new manager Adrie Koster. The man in his mid 30's wore a Feyenoord shirt and shouted threats at Koster before making a move to try and attack the newly appointed Feyenoord boss.

Adrie Koster was revealed by chairman Dick van Well at today's press conference, but during questions from the press a unnamed man crashed in through the back entrance. He threatened to "kill him and his family" if he stayed on as Feyenoord manager for this season. Koster however was not shaken up at all by the intruder, saying he was prepared for the backlash of the fans with his previous history.

Koster was brought in to replace new Dutch manager Bert van Marwijk from Feyenoord's arch rivals Ajax. Koster has had many experiences as manager and player, and hopes this will be his best season yet. "I am very much looking forward to the challenge. I know how tough it will be, and I know the pressure I have on my shoulders, but I think I can do well. Winning the title will always be the aim, and Europe is a must for a club like Feyenoord."

Feyenoord chairman Dick van Well said it was sad to see a reaction like this from a fan, and hopes that there will be no more problems. "It is very disappointing to see this happen. Adrie is a fantastic manager and is very capable of leading Feyenoord, no matter where he has been before. I just hope the fans base their views on his managerial skill rather than his previous background."

When asked about possible signings Koster said that he hadn't even had much of a chance to speak to the players let alone think what areas would need improving. "I haven't thought about transfers at all. I've not had much time with the players and I won't be thinking of transfers until I have had a few training sessions with the players."

van Well gave an indication as to how much Koster would be given to spend. "The club is in a good financial state and we are able to give Adrie some money for transfers. It will be somewhere in the region of ten million euros. We hope this will boost the squad so that Feyenoord can once again become a top side in Europe."

Koster targets Liverpool's Aurélio
Jul 10 2008

Fábio Aurélio high on Feyenoord's list

Adrie Koster has declared his interest in Liverpool wing back Fábio Aurélio today, one of a few players targeted by Feyenoord as they start fresh with a new manager at the helm.

Feyenoord have reported to have made an enquiry as to how much Liverpool would accept for the Brazilian who has impressed in his two seasons at the club. It is expected that a fee of £2.5million will have to be paid for Aurélio, although the price could easily increase as interest hots up.

Koster told the club's website that he was very keen on bringing in a few players before the start of the new season. "The squad I have is good, but it could be better. There are a few positions I would like to strengthen, and I believe Aurélio would be a perfect player to fill some gaps. We are yet to make an offer, but we shall be talking to Liverpool very shortly."

Koster has also been linked with a move for Inter Milan's Julio Cruz, although the Feyenoord boss seems to be keeping his cards close to his chest. "We will be looking at a number of players," said Koster, "but I don't wish to give away too much of our plans."

Koster's first game in charge will come at the end of the month when Feyenoord travel to Spanish side Elche on the 31st. Koster only has to wait two games before his back facing his former club Excelsior in the annual friendly between the two clubs.

Adrie Koster has made his first signing as manager of Feyenoord, picking up Liverpool's Fábio Aurélio for an estimated fee of £2.4million. This is expected to be one of a few signings for Koster who has the job of taking Feyenoord back to the glory days in their centenary year.

The Brazilian defender-come-midfielder has told the press that he is delighted to be joining Feyenoord and hopes he can help lift Feyenoord back to the top of the Eredivisie. "It's a great opportunity for me to go play somewhere different," says Aurélio, "and I really hope I can help change Feyenoord's fortunes. It will be a challenge getting used to the new team and division, but there are some fantastic players at the club."

When asked about his thoughts on his time at Liverpool he replied with great sentiments for his side and manager. "I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Liverpool. It is a great club with great fans and history. Benitez has been fantastic, but now it is time for me to move on and find regular first team football."

A joyous Koster spoke to reporters outside Feyenoord's training ground after the transfer was announced. "It's fantastic that Fábio is coming to join us," exclaimed Koster. "He is a top quality player and hopefully he can do many things here in Amsterdam."

Aurélio spent two seasons at Liverpool after he was signed on a free from Valencia, Rafa Benitez's former club. He scored just the one goal for Liverpool, a volley in a 3-1 win over Bolton in March 2008. Aurélio hasn't appeared for his national side Brazil since 2000, and will be hoping his new move will increase his chances of being selected.

Is it just me or does Fabio Aurelio bear a slight resemblence to Stephen Hendry...

Anyways, brilliant start, I look forward to seeing how this pans out.

PSV eye up de Guzman

By Soccernet staff

Jul 14, 2008 Posted Image

PSV Eindhoven manager Huub Stevens has publicly stated that he is very interested in signing 20 year-old midfielder Jonathan de Guzman from fellow Eredivisie side Feyenoord. A statement released on PSV's website included talk of a possible move for de Guzman, although no offer had yet been made.

Stevens said that de Guzman was a fine player and would be a fine asset to have for the up-coming season. "We have our eye on a few players, de Guzman being one of them. He is an excellent young player and he would be great for the club. I have no doubt he will go on to play for the national team, and I'm sure Feyenoord know that. It will be tough to prize him away from Feyenoord, but we are certainly interested in signing him."

It is expected that PSV will have to pay somewhere in the region of £4million for his services, but that price may increase due to the pressure of the fans at Feyenoord wanting the club to keep de Guzman. Feyenoord themselves have not yet had anything to say on the subject, and are expected to be chasing several young players themselves. It is reported that Adrie Koster wishes to bring in Ajax youngster John Goossens, although it is thought that Ajax are not looking to sell him for any price.

de Guzman interested in a move to PSV

After comments from PSV Eindhoven manager regarding a possible move for Feyenoord star Jonathan de Guzman, the 20 year-old midfielder has said that he would consider a move if the offer came along.

de Guzman told told reporters outside Feyenoord's training ground that if PSV came calling then he would seriously consider a move to the Eredivisie champions. "It's fantastic to hear that you are a transfer target for the champions," said de Guzman, "and I would have to seriously consider a move if an offer was put on the table."

The 20 year-old midfielder has been at Feyenoord since he started his career at the age of 16 and said that it would be a tough decision. "Feyenoord have brought me up into professional football and so it would be an extremely hard decision to leave."

Feyenoord manager Adrie Koster has yet to talk to the media about the possibility of selling de Guzman, but it is expected that the new boss will try his utmost to keep the future Dutch star. It is also reported that Ajax have told Koster that John Goosens is not for sale following an enquiry from the former Ajax youth coach.

BV Veendam striker Gersom Klok has also been linked with a move to Feyenoord for a value of around £200k. The 17 year-old Eerste Divisie striker has been touted as a star in the making and Feyenoord will be keen to snap him up for as little as possible.

Youngster signs for Feyenoord

By Soccernet staff

Jul 20, 2008 Posted Image

Feyenoord have signed 17 year-old Gersom Klok from Eerste Divisie side BV Veendam for a fee of £220k plus future incentives. The young striker has only played 8 professional games in two years and is expected to have to wait a few seasons at De Kuip before getting his chance in the first team.

When reporters caught up with the new Feyenoord striker he described the move as a 'dream come true'. "It's absolutely fantastic," enthused Klok, "and it really is a dream come true. I understand how hard I have to work to make it to the top, but I'm willing to put in the time and effort."

Feyenoord manager Adrie Koster said that Klok was definitely a hot prospect for the future. "He's a great talent, and one to watch for the future. It's great to see young talent coming through and getting their chance at an early age. Hopefully he'll continue to progress under our coaching staff and in a few years be a solid first team starter."

Klok has been given a three-year deal at Feyenoord worth around £620 per week and will be hoping to impress in the U19's and Reserve sides.

Adrie Koster: An exclusive interview
July 25 2008

Posted Image

Adrie Koster is a renowned manager around the Dutch football scene, but he faces his biggest challenge yet: Feyenoord. The team hasn't won the Eredivisie title for ten years, and despite UEFA Cup glory in 2002, the fans are eagerly expecting a new era that will take them back to the top of Dutch football. He has taken time out to chat to us at voetbalzone.nl on the up-coming season.

voetbalzone.nel: Thanks for taken time out of your busy schedule Adrie to come talk to us here today.

Adrie Koster: No worries at all.

voetbalzone.nel: First off, how have things been in the first few weeks at Feyenoord? Are the players training well and who has really impressed you so far?

Adrie Koster: Well I've been made to feel very welcome by all the staff and players at Feyenoord. It's a fantastic club that deserves to be fighting for trophies every season and I hope to be the man to take them there. Training has gone well. All the players look sharp and ready for the new season. Fábio Aurélio has really shown why he was worth €2.7million. He is unbelievably skillful and works extremely hard every session. Roy Makaay and Jon Dahl Tomasson are seasoned professionals and really help out a few of the younger lads. Jonathan de Guzman is a real livewire in the midfield and Giovanni van Bronckhorst is so relaxed. It's a fantastic atmosphere in training and that's the way it should be.

voetbalzone.nel: You mentioned Jonathan de Guzman there, have you spoke to him at all about moving to PSV? What is your stance on the whole situation?

Adrie Koster: I haven't spoken much to him about it. As of yet PSV have not made a bid and so he is not going anywhere. He is a class player and many teams will be interested in him, but we will do our best to keep him at the club. If any offers come in for him then we will decide whether or not it is a good enough offer. As of now, he is enjoying his football at Feyenoord and will remain so.

voetbalzone.nel: You have already made one big signing in Fábio Aurélio, do you plan on any other big money moves before the start of the season?

Adrie Koster: I honestly don't know. Currently we are not really looking at anyone in particular, but we always have scouts out and about looking for who would suit the team best. I will know a lot more about the side and what areas need strengthening after we have played a few friendlies. I won't say we won't be buying any other big names, but for now I am happy with the squad I have at my disposal.

voetbalzone.nel: What do you think realistically is the target for Feyenoord this season? Is it Europe or do you believe the team is good enough to challenge for the title once again?

Adrie Koster: It will be incredibly tough this season. Feyenoord is a big club and therefore the expectations are to be up the top, but over the past few seasons the club has continued to decline. Everybody has the chance of winning at the start of the season, and that's how we will go about it. After ten games I will be able to give you a more honest target of where we will end up come the end of the season.

voetbalzone.nel: So to sum that up, do you believe you can win the title?

Adrie Koster: Yes.

voetbalzone.nel: You have the Dutch Super Cup tie with PSV at the end of August, how do you predict you will fare against the champions?

Adrie Koster: It is always a fantastic season opener. It will be a tough game to start the season but, as I'm sure PSV are, we are confident of winning. It would be a great way to show the fans that we can challenge for silverware this year and it would give the players masses of confidence going into the season.

voetbalzone.nel: Well thanks for your time Adrie and good luck for the forthcoming season.

Adrie Koster: Thank you very much.

Feyenoord capture Demidov

By Soccernet staff

Aug 6, 2008 Posted Image

Feyenoord have sealed their third signing ahead of the 2008-2009 Eredivisie season picking up Norwegian defender-come-midfielder Vadim Demidov from Premier Division side Rosenborg. Demidov only signed for Rosenborg in the summer but has decided to move on once again to further his career.

Rosenborg bought Demidov for £400k back in the summer, but an offer of £800k plus future profit was too good to turn down and so the 21 year-old has left for Holland having just played two games for the club. Rosenborg manager Erik Hamrén said that it was sad to see Demidov leave so soon after he had arrived but the move was the best thing for both club and player. "It's a shame that Demidov only stayed with us for a short while. However, the offer was too good to turn down and the move progresses Vadim's career even further. I wish him all the best at Feyenoord."

Demidov himself stated that he was looking forward to working with Adrie Koster and all the star players that Feyenoord possess. "I am very happy to have signed for Feyenoord. Koster is a great manager and Feyenoord are a great team. Hopefully I can really push my career forward in Holland."

Feyenoord have so far played three pre-season friendlies against Elche, Anderlecht and Koster's old club, Excelsior. A Roy Makaay double gave Feyenoord a comfortable win at Elche, whilst a strong performance was not enough to beat Anderlecht, the sides locking swords at 1-1. Feyenoord's most recent pre-season friendly ended in a 4-0 victory over feeder club Excelsior, goals from Vlaar, Makaay, Mols and El Ahmadi sealing a comprehensive win.

They face three more pre-season friendlies with KV Kortrijk, Reggina and Almería before their Super Cup match with reigning champions PSV Eindhoven on August 23.

Landzaat has created interest within the Eredivisie

Danny Landzaat has told Feyenoord that for him to move to sc Heerenveen they will have to pay him £3,700 per week until the end of his contract on 30 June 2010.

Feyenoord have reportedly accepted a £1million offer from sc Heerenveen for the experienced midfielder, but Landzaat is unwilling to go unless he is paid off by the club for the remainder of his current contract.

Landzaat briefly spoke to reporters outside Feyenoord's training ground earlier today. "If I am to move I want a good deal. The money offered by Heerenveen is not acceptable and the only way I will leave is if Feyenoord continue to pay a slight amount of my current wages."

Interest is high for the Dutch international with FC Twente reportedly interested in signing the 32 year-old alongside sc Heerenveen.

Feyenoord have yet to reply to Landzaat's demands, but it is expected that the club will agree to reduce the current wage bill as well create more transfer revenue for Adrie Koster to make more signings.

Million Dollar 'Baby'

Landzaat's reputation has taken a pounding

Danny Landzaat has today signed for Eredivisie side sc Heerenveen after Feyenoord accepted his demands of compensation for making the move to a smaller club with a lower wage. Landzaat will now be paid €4,217 per week until June 2010 causing some former and current players to slate the Dutch international.

The deal has cost Heerenveen €1million taking their total of two pre-season transfers to over €3million. Landzaat joins new signing Ali Karimi at Heerenveen hoping to improve the clubs performance on last season when they finished an impressive 5th.

Ex-Dutch legend Johna Cruyff has called Landzaat a 'baby' following the transfer. "It's all totally ridiculous," said Cruyff, "and it just shows what football has become. It's all about money, and I simply cannot believe that a club has to pay wages for someone they want to get rid of. Landzaat is a baby. He is moving to a club who finished above Feyenoord last season and they will still be paying him a large amount of money each week. Landzaat should stop worrying about money and start worrying about his career, otherwise he'll be playing for a small village team before he knows it."

His former team mate at Feyenoord, Roy Makaay, has also stated his disappointment at Landzaat's decision. "It's not the way things should be in football. It has become all about money, and in some cases that is fair enough, but in this case it's simply stupid. He [Landzaat] will probably regret his decision when he looks back because it just shows himself as being greedy, which I don't think he is."

Landzaat played 11 games in his only season at Feyenoord, scoring twice, and now adds Heerenveen to a long list of past clubs, including Ajax and Wigan. Heerenveen and Feyenoord meet mid-November at Abe Lenstra Stadion which promises to be a heated affair.
