I just can't quit admits Ferguson

Posted Image

Ferguson set to stay at Old Trafford until at least 2010

Sir Alex Ferguson has today squashed recent rumours that he was set to retire as Manchester United boss. The sixty-six year old has been at Old Trafford since November 1986.

Following Uniteds successful Premier League and Champions League campaigns last year, the thought that Ferguson may retire seemed absurd, the Scots own statement whilst talking to Sky Sports has refuted reports that United would be looking in this summers transfer window for a manager rather then players.

''I did think of retiring before, a few years ago but when I really thought about it I couldn't. At the end of the day the reports that have been circulating lately following the Champions League final in Moscow are completely untrue. I don't know if I could quit, I think I'll only leave if my health impedes me from doing my job.''

Ferguson has signed a new deal at United following his clubs penalty shootout victory over fellow Premier League rivals Chelsea in last years rain soaked Champions League final in Moscow. His current deal was set to expire at the end of next year, it is now believed that Sir Alex will at least stay at Old Trafford until the end of 2010.

''It is true yes that a new deal has been agreed on, myself and the chairmen thought that it was the right thing to do for the players and the club. We have had more then twenty years of consistency at this club and I think the longer we keep doing things consistently we will continue to reach the high standards we set ourselves.''

United kick off their pre-season campaign away to Patrick Thistle in two weeks time, the Scot plotting another season at the helm of arguably one of the biggest clubs in the world.

Vidic move on the cards?

Posted Image

Nemanja Vidic is a reported target of Barcelona boss Pep Guardiola

Reports circulating in Spain today suggest that FC Barcelona manager Pep Guardiola is contemplating offering more then twenty million pounds to try snatch Manchester United centre back Nemanja Vidic.

New FC Barcelona boss Pep Guardiola is according to reports set to offer Manchester United close to twenty five million pounds in the hope of luring Serbian international Nemanja Vidic to the Nou Camp.

Vidic who joined United back in 2005 from Spartak Moscow for a fee of just seven million pounds has become a fan favourite, the strong centre back making sixty-eight Premier League appearances in just three years.

Espn's soccernet has Guardiola as quoting '' He (Vidic) is a very good player. He is composed and very strong in the air, everything a manager could want at the heart of his defence and I may see if it is possible to add him to my team''.

Probably however the greatest indication of what will transpire this summer came when the players agent Paolo Fabbri denied any link with his client and a move to the Spanish giants.

''My client is contracted to Manchester United until 2012 and very happy with that situation. Me nor my client wish to seek a move away from Manchester United and I would like to take the time to deny any rumour about a possible transfer to FC Barcelona or any other club on behalf of my client''.

Although it is clear that Vidic wishes to remain at Old Trafford if his agents comments are to be taken seriously, the clubs debt situation may force Ferguson's hand in the matter should he see Johnny Evan's as a fit replacement should the Serbian international depart for Spain.

I'll do anything to beat Zenit declares Ronaldo

Posted Image

Cristiano Ronaldo wants further silverware when United meet Zenit in Monaco

Just hours after finding out when Manchester United will meet Zenit Saint Petersburg in the UEFA Super Cup final, Cristiano Ronaldo has boldy declared that he will do everything in his power to add the trophy to his collection.

The Super Cup final is a one off game played between the winners of the Champions League final and the Uefa Cup final, Manchester United overcame Chelsea in Moscow last year to book their place in Monaco whilst coincidentally the Russian champions booked their place in Manchester.

The clash will take place on Friday the 29th of August at the Stade Louis II in Monaco. Uniteds Premier League clash with Wigan has been rescheduled for Wednesday the 3rd of September. The game has come in for some criticism as big European sides choose to play under strength sides but Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo has already signalled his intention of playing in the final if he returns in time from injury.

"As a player you want to win things, you play all season to get this chance. I wish that my injury is gone so I can play in the final, I want to win many things at this great club and hopefully I can add a Super Cup winners medal to the Premier League and Champions League medals I have already won. I will do whatever it takes to win the match if I play."

Despite the fact that United will no doubt start as favourites going into the Super Cup clash, Ronaldo has called for his team-mates to give the Russian champions the respect they deserve.

"It wont be easy against Zenit but we can certainly beat them. However as I said we must show respect, they didn't win the Uefa Cup playing bad football so we must prepare well for the clash. If we do that we will have a fantastic chance."

Ronaldo, who turns twenty-four in February of next year is currently on holiday in Los Angeles recovering from surgery on his ankle. The Portuguese international set to miss up to two months of action whilst he recovers from his injury.

Pre Season Friendly From Firhill, Official Attendance 10,824

Patrick Thistle 0-3 Manchester United

Posted Image

Nani grabbed two goals as United coasted past Thistle at Firhill

Manchester United easily accounted for Scottish side Patrick Thistle as first half strikes from Ryan Giggs and a Nani brace in just two first half minutes where enough to secure victory at Firhill in front of almost eleven thousand.

Manchester United where clear cut favourites before their trip to Firhill to take on Patrick Thistle and it didn't take long for the men from Manchester to create their first opportunity on goal. Within just three minutes United where ahead and it was club veteran Ryan Giggs who was on the end of a Gary Neville cross, the Welshman steering the ball past Jonathan Tuffey.

Carlos Tevez went close seventeen minutes later but Tuffey was able to deny the Argentine striker. Darren Fletcher went even closer just two minutes later with a volley but the Thistle keeper was again able to deny United furthering their lead.

As the game ticked on the Red Devils continued to dominate the game and their second came just on the half hour mark. Nani ran down the right wing and his cross was turned behind by Chaplain. From the resulting corner Ryan Giggs delivered the ball into the area and Nani applied the finish from just seven yards out, the Portuguese international heading the ball past the helpless Tuffey.

If Patrick Thistle had any chance of coming from two nil down to salvage something from the game that hope was dashed just two minutes after Nani's first strike, his second a low hard free kick from just outside the box after Carlos Tevez had been illegally halted by Marc Twaddle.

From that point on United continued to dominate proceedings but never showed any real attacking intentions and as Sir Alex Ferguson made changes throughout the game United's attacking flair began to fade.

All in all however the fans, Ferguson and his players will be happy with the outing, their three nil victory more then showing their dominance over the Scottish side.

Post Match Reactions:
Nani: I am happy to score two goals, I feel fit for the season ahead and hope to play an important role for the club.

Sir Alex Ferguson (Manchester United Manager): We where good today, we did some good things and some bad things but overall it was a good display, a professional display from the lads and we got the win which we wanted.

Ian McCall (Patrick Thistle Manager): It is simple, we where outclassed today. Manchester United are world class and they got the job done professionally as Sir Alex said, with the likes of Rooney, Giggs, Anderson and Vidic you can see how great they are. It was always going to be a tough game and I'm still proud of my boys.

Pre Season Friendly From Gigg Lane, Official Attendance 11,751

Bury 0-3 Manchester United

Posted Image

Scholes set United on their way with his strike early into the second half

A strong second half performance from Manchester United saw them see off League Two side Bury today at Gigg Lane. Goals from Paul Scholes and Michael Carrick setting the Red Devils on their way to victory.

Bury welcomed Premier League giants Manchester United to Gigg Lane this evening for a pre season clash, the League Two side would have to show determination and have luck on their side to get a positive result. United three days earlier had put three past Patrick Thistle at Firhill and Sir Alex Ferguson made just three changes from that side. Tomasz Kuszczak replaced Ben Foster in goal, Paul Scholes came in for the outgoing Anderson and Wayne Rooney dropped to the bench as Dimitar Berbatov was given the task of leading the line with Carlos Tevez.

Just one minute into the game referee Oliver Pawson was forced to book Ritchie Baker, Dimitar Berbatov feeling the full impact of the Bury players tackle. The first chance of the game came six minutes later as Tevez and Darren Fletcher combined well on the edge of the area, the Scottish midfielder rattling the crossbar with a driven effort.

Ryan Giggs was denied just two minutes later as Bury skipper Paul Scott cleared his header off the line, the home side hanging on for dear life. Bulgarian international Dimitar Berbatov then sent a volley just wide of Wayne Browns post, Uniteds summer signing showing why Sir Alex Ferguson parted with thirty two million pounds for his signature.

Brown then denied Berbatov ten minutes later as the former Bayern Leverkusen and Tottenham striker found space inside the area, the Bulgarians low shoot palmed away by Browns outstretched right hand. With half time approaching it was looking ever more likely that Bury would hold on until half time but they where very lucky to do so as Nani smashed a venomous free kick against the crossbar from almost thirty yards out, Bury keeper Wayne Brown a spectator as he watched the ball sail towards his goal.

Sir Alex obviously wanted more pace out wide in the second half and he withdrew Nani and Ryan Giggs for Brazilian twins Rafael and Fabio, the latter having an almost immediate impact on proceedings.

Just four minutes after his introduction into the game the Brazilian wing back played a delightful ball into the path of Manchester United veteran Paul Scholes and the crowd was treated to a vintage Scholes goal as the former England international hit a powerful drive which left Wayne Brown with no chance.

Michael Carrick entered the game just three minutes after Scholes had opened the deadlock, Carrick took just forty five seconds to get involved, his fellow substitute Anderson picking him out beyond the Bury defence with a stunning ball and the former West Ham United midfielder made no mistake as he rolled the ball past Brown to make it two.

Carrick then hit the post four minutes later with a header, Rafaels delivery from the corner a dangerous one, United unlucky not to be leading by three. They didn't have to wait long thou as Carrick nearly bagged himself a second, unfortunately for Carrick and Ben Futcher the goal will go down as an own goal after Futchers attempted clearance only forced the ball home into the back of the net although Carrick may argue it was ending up there anyway after he had rounded Brown and slid the ball towards goal.

United could have extended their lead further but Anderson, Carrick and Wayne Rooney all failed to take full advantage of the opportunities that arose, the Red Devils comfortable winners at Gigg Lane as Bury had no answer.

Lineups
Bury: Brown, Scott ( C ), Buchanan, Futcher (61), Cresswell (54), Morrell (61), Fyfe (61), Baker (74), Dawson (49), Hurst (45), Bishop (74)
Substitutes: Belford, Jones, Bennett, Rouse, Sodje (61), Barry-Murphy (54), Racchi (61), Dorney (74), Haslam (61), Thompson (45), Anane (49), Steele (74)

Manchester United: Kuszczak, Neville ( C )(63), O'Shea, Vidic, Ferdinand, Nani (45), Giggs (45), Fletcher (52), Scholes (52), Tevez (63), Berbatov
Substitutes:
Foster, Brown (63), Evra, Evans, Rafael (45), Carrick (52), Gibson, Possebon, Anderson (52), Rooney (63), Manucho, Fabio (45)

Madrid set to swoop for Tevez

Posted Image

Calderon informs the Spanish media that Carlos Tevez is a transfer target

Real Madrid have again told gathering media that they are ready to prise a player away from Old Trafford. Their latest claim that Carlos Tevez may move to the Bernabeu sure to get people talking this summer.

Carlos Tevez who joined United last year for an undisclosed fee from West Ham United was today brought into what could be a muddy battle between football powerhouses Manchester United and Real Madrid. The Argentine who scored fourteen times in the Premier League last year is reportedly valued at around thirty five million pounds by United and the former Boca Juniors striker is a firm favourite with United fans.

Speaking today at a press conference unveiling new signing Rafael Van Der Vaart, Real president Ramon Calderon was asked if any other players would be joining the Spanish outfit he responded, ''Yes, I think so. We maybe need another striker, I like Tevez very much, he is a player I would buy."

Madrid may have some ace cards to play if they do decide to pursue Tevez, with the club already boasting five Argentine internationals in the form of Ezequiel Garay, Fernando Gago, Gonzalo Higuain, Javier Saviola and Gabriel Heinze the lure of some familiarity would make Madrid the perfect destination if Tevez was to leave Manchester.

A possible roadblock to any move would be the large fee being discussed, whether Madrid would want to pay thirty five million for another player with strikers Raul, Ruud Van Nistelrooy and Javier Saviola already at the club remains to be seen. A possible problem with any deal will be Sir Alex Fergusons clear dislike for Calderon who has attempted to unsettle Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo.

United confirm Vidic offer

Posted Image

Real Madrid are chasing Serbian international Nemanja Vidic

Manchester United today confirmed via their website that the club had received an offer from Real Madrid in regards to the possible transfer of Nemanja Vidic, with various sources suggesting a fee of twelve million pounds.

As reported by BBC Sport fifteen days ago it seems that Manchester United defender Nemanja Vidic will this summer become a hot target for what seems to be now both FC Barcelona and Real Madrid.

Vidic whose agent made it quite clear a fortnight ago that the Serbian international wanted to stay at Old Trafford may now be forced to consider his future. The centre backs agent spoke to various media representatives when rumours of Pep Guardiolas interest surfaced stating,

''My client is contracted to Manchester United until 2012 and very happy with that situation. Me nor my client wish to seek a move away from Manchester United and I would like to take the time to deny any rumour about a possible transfer to FC Barcelona or any other club on behalf of my client''.

It seems however that United may be willing to allow Vidic to leave should the right offer be made from an interested party. A statement on www.manutd.com read,

"Manchester United Football Club today received an offer from Real Madrid in regards to the possible transfer of Nemanja Vidic, from Manchester United to Real Madrid.

At this point the club will speak to Nemanja, his agent, Sir Alex Ferguson and make a decision which will benefit all parties involved.

The club would like to point out that we have not accepted any offer at present and until further notice Nemanja Vidic will remain a Manchester United player."

Veteran duo extend contracts

Posted Image

The pair have made a combined 899 league appearances for United

Sir Alex Ferguson today told journalists that he was delighted that club veterans Ryan Giggs and Gary Neville had decided to sign new contracts which will keep the pair at Old Trafford until at least 2010.

Gary Neville and Ryan Giggs have been integral parts of Manchester Uniteds most successful period. The childhood fans of the Red Devils today both signed one year contract extensions to their current deals which will keep the paid at Old Trafford until 2010.

Both have also asked the club to reduce their wage by fifteen thousand pounds a week, United set to save thirty thousand a week, one hundred and twenty thousand a month on its already big wage budget. The pair who have made a collective total of just under 900 league appearances for United where today praised by Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson.

"Ryan has been here at the club in the first team since 1990. He has been here almos as long as myself and that is a credit to the type of professional he is. He has looked after himself and he is reaping the rewards now. To make over five hundred league appearances for this club is some achievement and I hope people remember Ryan for all the wonderful things he has done for this club."

"As for Gary, well he is another model professional. You don't win eighty five caps for England if your a bad player, he was a fine right back and he is a terrific captain which I'm glad I've had the pleasure of working with. The only thing you can probably fault Gary on is the fact he has only scored five league goals in his time here, he is a bit like Paul Scholes, Paul can't tackle still to this day and Gary just can't shoot."

Pre Season Friendly From Kenilworth Road, Official Attendance 15,184

Doncaster 0-3 Manchester United

Posted Image

Tevez grabbed the opening goal for United

Manchester United recorded their third straight three nil victory of their pre-season campaign as they cooly accounted for newly promoted Doncaster at Kenilworth Road.

Despite constant rumours that he is bound for La Liga and Spain Nemanja Vidic partnered Rio Ferdinand at the heart of a strong Manchester United defence. The reigning Premier Leauge and European Champions naming a very strong side to face Doncaster Rovers.

There first chance came just three minutes into the contest as Ryan Giggs charged down the left flank, his deft cross to the back post was attacked by Nani and the Portuguese international was unlucky not to find the net as he outjumped James Coppinger.

Former Wimbledon player Neil Sullivan was forced into action just four minutes later, Wayne Rooney's fierce effort from the edge of the area just about palmed away from the former Scottish international. To their credit Doncaster pushed forward and may have taken the lead had Jos Van Nieuwstadt not spurned his opportunity after Dean Heffernan had played him into space.

The home side paid dearly for their failure to take advantage when a long ball forward by Nemanja Vidic fell at the feet of Carlos Tevez who found himself all alone and in on goal, the Argentine driving the ball past Sullivan to open the scoring for United.

The game passed without incident up until the half hour mark when Irishman Dean Heffernan forced Edwin Van Der Sar into action, Heffernan's headed effort denied after Richie Wellens had done well to pick the striker out inside the box from over thirty yards out.

A neat move then four minutes shy of half time saw Michael Carrick race through on goal after Wayne Rooney fed the ball into his path but Carrick failed to hit the target as his shot rolled past Sullivans left hand post, the first half ending with United ahead.

Ryan Giggs was withdrawn at the break for young Fabio and the Brazilian had an immediate impact just seventeen minutes after his introduction, the eighteen year old slotting his strike into the bottom right corner after Nemanja Vidic had won a flick on from Nani's free kick, Neil Sullivan unable to do anything about Fabio's strike.

United continued to dominate the game and ventured forward more and more in search of another goal, it finally came courtesy of Paul Scholes, the thirty three year old smashing home a right footed volley from the edge of the area with just over a minute remaining.

Sir Alex Ferguson and his side now have just one pre-season game remaining, their trip to face FC Porto in Portugal on the 7th of this month their final hit out before they face Harry Redknapps Portsmouth in the FA Community Shield Final at Wembley just three days later.

Madrid close in on Vidic

Is Vidic set to exit Old Trafford?

The future whereabouts of Nemanja Vidic took a twist today as the player labeled a move to Real Madrid "an attractive proposition" just one week after United confirmed Madrid had made an offer.

The saga of Nemanja Vidic began earlier last month as FC Barcelona manager Pep Guardiola declared his interest. The spark was re-ignited just one week ago as Manchester United themselves confirmed that Madrid had placed an offer for the Serbian international.

Vidic who has been at Old Trafford since 2005 today told gathering media that a move to Madrid would interest him,

"Real Madrid are a good club, but I am already at a great club. Where I will end up I know already, but I cannot say right now. To clear the air, a move to Madrid would be a very interesting proposition for myself and my family."

Vidic has made sixty eight Premier League appearances for United since his arrival from Spartak Moscow for just seven million pounds and if a deal is to be completed worth the estimated twenty two million pounds being spoken of, United will have made more then three times the amount in which they purchased Vidic for.

However it is very clear that Sir Alex Ferguson would love to retain the services of Vidic, reports suggesting the Scot has opened up emergency contract negotiations to try lure his prized asset into staying in Manchester. Vidic currently has four years left on his deal at United in which he earns a handsome fifty five thousand pound a week.
