Al-Ittihad decide on Brazilian Moraes
by Yousif Al-Shahrani and Sultan Mahdi

Posted Image
After a long and drawn-out search, Al-Ittihad of Jeddah have appointed 37 year old Brazilian Valdir Moraes as their new Manager. Although unknown in Saudi Arabia, Moraes – offered an initial 1 year deal - has built up a reputation as an exciting young manager back in his homeland with spells at CENE and, most recently, Bahia.

Former manager, Argentinian Gabriel Calderón, had stepped down at the end of last season, citing homesickness and the need for a new challenge as his main reasons for leaving. The Al-Ittihad board decided against making a quick replacement for Calderón, and Moraes’s appointment is sure to be a big relief for the millions of Tigers fans who follow their team’s every move. Whilst still a force domestically, Al-Ittihad (which means "United "in Arabic) have gone into somewhat of a slump continentally since their 2004/2005 Asian Champion's League double, and Moraes will have to deal with the demands for more silverware.

Born in 1970 in Campo Grande, a city of 700,000, Moraes began his playing career with hometown club CENE in 1984 as a 14 year old. He moved on to Vila Nova of Goiâna in 1990 and helped them gain promotion back into the Brazilian Série B. Although rumoured to be close to signing for Atletico Mineiro in 1993, a move to Belo Horizonte never materialised and he eventually fell off the footballing radar, so to speak. That was until 2005 when Moraes returned home to coach his beloved CENE in the Third Division.

After 2 successful years, he made the step back up to Série B when he was offered the Manager’s job at Bahia. Placing the emphasis on youth and fast, attractive, attacking football Moraes guided Bahia to a Second place finish and promotion to Série A, before he accepted the approach by Al-Ittihad.

Speaking exclusively to the Saudi Gazette, with the aid of a translator, Moraes confirmed his delight at being in Jeddah.

Quote

“I’m extremely happy to be here. It’s not too often that somebody like me gets an opportunity like this. I hope to make myself at home quickly in Jeddah so that I can focus fully on leading this great team on to greater things.”

It will be interesting to see how Moraes adapts to life as one of the 3.4 million citizens of Jeddah, and whether he can win the support of the notoriously passionate Ittihad fans.

Big-name signings make Al-Ittihad the envy of the Kingdom

Tigers boss splashes the cash on South American stars by Ghazi Al-Harbi

For the first time in his managerial career, new Al-Ittihad coach Valdir Moraes has had the luxury of a significant transfer budget, and the man from Campo Grande has not wasted any time in bringing in exciting new players.
With the Saudi League being renowned for tempting ageing superstars to have one final big money move, Moraes has bucked the trend by signing players in their prime, with potential to improve in the future. His spending is rumoured to be close to £15million.
Moraes’s 2 most eye-catching transfers so far have both been strikers:

Posted Image

Christian Benitez, formerly of Mexican side Santos Laguna, signed for a fee believed to be just under £2million. The Ecuadorean signed a 3 year contract with the Tigers, and fans are surely hoping that he can maintain his fantastic scoring record in the Saudi Premier League this season. Although not the tallest of players, Benitez’s stocky frame and immense physical strength mean that he is always a handful for any defence to deal with. Click here for a video of Benitez in action.

Also joining from the Mexican Primera División is Humberto Suazo. The Chilean international arrives with a proven goal-scoring record, and looks like the ideal partner for Benitez in Al-Ittihad’s new-look attack. Click here to see Suazo in action.

Three other notable transfers include those of Édgar Andrade, Ahmed Al-Furaidi and Mohammed Abou Trika. At just 20 years of age, Andrade is most definitely one for the future – as is Saudi Arabian Al-Furaidi. Al Furaidi is seen by many as a future star of the National team, and Moraes pinched him off of Ittihad’s eternal rivals Al-Hilal for just £1.8m.
Abou Trika, on the other hand, is already an established National team player for Egypt, and was widely regarded as the best player playing in Africa until he signed a 3 year deal at Prince Abdullah Al-Faisal Stadium for £3.4m. He is expected to pair up with Saudi and Ittihad Legend Mohammed Noor in Attacking Midfield. Click here for a clip of Al-Furaidi, and here to see Abou Trika score in the World Club Cup against América of Mexico.

The rest of Moraes’s signings are as follows: Tales - £250K (Internacional), Carlos Tordoya – £275K (Bolívar), Enrique Esqueda - £110K (América), Juan Carlos Medina - £110K (América), Leandro Silva - £275K (Coritiba), Bruno Neves - £28K (Bahia), Amoroso - £50K (São Caetano), Alfredo Padilla – £300K (Junior), Nazifi Inuwa - £80K (Kano Pillars), Irénée Kouakou - £65K (ASEC), and Dãnut Coman – Free.

Notable sales include: Redah Tukar - £525K (Al-Shabab), Wisam Salih Suwaled - £675K (Al-Ansar), Abdullah Amin - £650K (Al-Qadisiyah) and Manaf Abu-Shegair - £575K (Al-Qadisiyah).

In Other News: Saudi International Khalid Aziz has made a shock move from Al-Hilal to Al-Ahli for close to £4.5million. No real reason for the transfer has been given by the Al-Hilal board, with many regarding Aziz as one of Hilal’s most important players.
The upfront cash lump sum is sure to have delighted the board of directors but it is difficult to see how Al-Hilal will replace a player dubbed “indispensable” by Saudi Striker Yasser Al-Qahtani last season.

Thanks a lot felton. 4 of his signings are Brazilian, but I'm sure Moraes will look to bring some guys from his old club with him in the future :D

Saudi FA hand control of National Team over to Valdir Moraes

Ittihad boss to split time between Jeddah and Riyadh

Faisal Al-Mutairi reporting from Riyadh

Posted Image

No more than a week after his appointment as Al-Ittihad Manager, the Saudi FA have surprisingly announced that Valdir Moraes is to become the new National Team Manager. With the Asian World Cup Qualifiers beginning later this year the FA chose to fill the vacant post sooner rather than later and, after interviewing Moraes, they decided – just as the Al-Ittihad board did some 7 days ago – that he was the perfect man for the job.

Although not the first foreigner to coach the falcons, Moraes’s positive attitude to all things Saudi-related has meant that his appointment has generally been quite well received – even by fans of Ittihad’s rivals Al-Hilal and Al-Ahli.

Moraes will have plenty of time to prepare for his first fixture in charge (a home friendly against Thailand in June), before the real task begins. Saudi Arabia are drawn in Group B of the Final Stage of the Asian World Cup Qualifying campaign alongside South Korea, North Korea, Iran and the U.A.E. The top two teams qualify automatically for the 2010 finals in South Africa, whilst 3rd place goes into a play-off against Group A’s 3rd place team.

No team is expected to qualify with ease, but the country will be hoping that Moraes can inspire his men with a little bit of Brazilian magic, and lead them on to another appearance at a Finals Competition.

Al-Ittihad have agreed sponsorship deals for the upcoming season with both Nike and PUMA. To mark the occasion, both companies have decided to release limited edition Al-Ittihad merchandise, only available in Saudi Arabia. The new Nike Total 90 Ittihad Tiger Boots are set to go on sale in the Kingdom next month, whilst the PUMA Tiger King Ball will be in sports stores around the country next week.

21st March 2008 – ACL Round-up Online – theafc.com

Smiles all round

6 points without conceding as Al-Ittihad dispatch Emirati and Iraqi opposition

Nazeer Al-Khazaz reporting from Jeddah

The Asian Champions League kicked off a week ago, and good results for Saudi Arabia’s two representatives in their opening two matches mean that optimism in the Kingdom is at an all time high.
Al-Ittihad were handed a comfortable draw in Group B alongside Al-Wasl of the United Arab Emirates, Qadsia of Kuwait and Iraqi representatives Al-Quwa Al-Jawiya.
Moraes’s arrival came a week after the registration period for the Groupstage of the ACL ended, and therefore none of his new signings are eligible to play until at least late August – when the other registration period opens.

Posted Image

For those unfamiliar with the ACL format, 28 teams are drawn into 7 groups of 4, with only the group winners progressing to the final. The winners of the previous year’s tournament (in this case Gamba Osaka of Japan) receive a bye to the Quarter-Finals and therefore do not have to participate in the Groupstage. Teams are only permitted to have 3 foreign players in their match squads. This year's Group Stage looks like this;

Posted Image

Posted Image

Al-Ittihad kicked off their campaign with a home demolition of Al-Wasl on the 12th March, in what was Valdir Moraes’s first match in charge. It didn’t take long for the Saudi champions to break the deadlock, as captain Mohammed Noor slotted home a Nourdin Boukhari cross in the 6th minute.

Posted Image

9 minutes later the Tigers had doubled their lead. Hicham Aboucherouane had his footing taken from beneath him and Mohammed Amin coolly dispatched the resulting penalty into the top left-hand corner. Amin then got his second of the match just before half-time. Noor, as commanding as ever in the centre of midfield, played a beautiful defence-splitting pass to the waiting Amin, who had only 1 man to beat before hitting a placed shot and giving Ittihad a comfortable lead at the interval.

Al-Wasl were disappointing in attack, and failed to significantly test keeper Taysir Al-Natief. Ibrahim Suwayed made sure of the win in the 77th minute when he powered an Al-Saied cross past the flailing Majed Nasser with his head.
Amin picked up the Man of the Match award, declaring himself happy at the team’s performance, and hinted at a similar display against Al-Quwa Al-Jawiya in Baghdad in seven days time;

Quote

“This was a good win for us on the opening match day. We worked hard and closed Al-Wasl down - restricting their chances - and then took our own chances when they came. I’m glad I could contribute to the team’s effort with my two goals, and hopefully we can take the momentum from this performance with us to Iraq next week.”

Valdir Moraes, however, played down the result and asked the fans not to get too carried away;

Quote

“Obviously 4-0 is a great result in any game, but we have to be honest and say that Al-Wasl were very poor today. We mustn’t get too carried away because tougher fixtures lie ahead, especially if we progress through the group and come up against one of the representatives from South Korea, Japan, Qatar or even Al-Ahli. If we win 4-0 in one of those games, then I will be celebrating.”

His plea seemed to fall on deaf ears, however, as Tigers fans in Jeddah partied long into the night.

Posted Image

In Group B’s second round of games, Al-Quwa Al-Jawiya were taught a lesson in possession football by the Tigers. Even though there had been worries beforehand about player safety – due to staging the match in Baghdad’s Al-Sha’ab Stadium – the Ittihad players dominated the home team and it looked as if it was in fact a home encounter for the Saudis.

Just as in Round 1 against Al-Wasl, Al-Ittihad found themselves ahead in the 6th minute, when Suwayed jumped highest to head in Mohammed Amin’s dangerous cross. In the 31st minute, Suwayed dispatched a penalty into the bottom hand corner of the goal. Suwayed had found himself free in the box, but went down rather too easily as the challenge came in. Television replays showed that contact was, at the very most, minimal.

Although Al-Quwa Al-Jawiya could feel aggrieved about the 2nd goal, they only had themselves to blame for Ittihad’s third. Mohammed Amin, once again drifting out to the left, laid the ball off to Saleh Al-Saqri who delivered a first time cross which was smashed home by Hicham Aboucherouane.

Posted Image

Pundits see Al-Ittihad as certainties to qualify from Group B, with many hoping it will lead to a mouth-watering tie in the Quarter Finals.

It's so far so good for Moraes and the boys from Jeddah.

More Asian Champions League news:

Al-Ahli also made light work of their first two matches in Group D, with a 2-0 home win over Emirati side Al-Wahda, courtesy of goals by Tayser Al-Jasim and Brazilian Harison, and an away win over Al-Kuwait, where Karam Barnarwi netted the only goal of the game.

28th March 2008 - Online Edition - Build-up to the Super Cup

Clash of the Jeddah Giants

One of the most eagerly anticipated Supercup matches of modern times kicks off tomorrow and we have all the build-up and pre-match talk right here at the Saudi Gazette.

Jamal Mutaz reporting from Jeddah

Posted Image

Tomorrow sees two heavyweights of the Saudi domestic game go head to head, in what many are predicting will be the best Supercup of the last decade. Al-Ittihad and Al-Ahli, both based in the city of Jeddah, will face off in their shared stadium – The Prince Abdullah Al-Faisal Stadium – to decide who gets bragging rights until the next Jeddah derby.

Posted Image

Jeddah, situated on the western edge of the Kingdom overlooking the African nation of Sudan, has always been an important point in the footballing history of Saudi Arabia. Along with Riyadh side Al-Hilal, Ittihad and Ahli make up what is referred to as the “Saudi Triangle.” This term was coined by the Saudi media after it became apparent that these three teams were the only ones with any real chance of challenging for and winning the domestic championship year in year out.

Although always important for the two teams competing in it each year, this year’s Saudi Supercup has that extra spark to it, purely because of the fierce and bitter rivalry between these two clubs. Neither one will want to walk away from this encounter empty handed, and here at the Saudi Gazette we have strived to bring you all the news as it happens.

This year’s promotional video for the Supercup can be viewed here.

Team News:

Al-Ittihad

Posted Image

Valdir Moraes is set to give a number of his new signings their Ittihad debuts tomorrow, most notaby Christián Benitez, Humberto Suazo, Édgar Andrade, Juan Carlos Medina and Carlos Tordoya. It’s interesting to see Moraes place so much trust on such newly-acquired players, especially when considering the importance of this game to the fans, and the fact that many of these players have been in the country for just over a week – some even less than that.

A source tells us that Ittihad are likely to start the game in a 4-2-2-2 formation, with Saud Khariree acting as a defensive foil so that the more attack-minded Noor and Boukhari can flourish without worrying about tracking back. Andrade seems likely to play the “Quarterback” role. Hamad Al-Muntashri will partner Tordoya in central defence, and the general consensus is that the match could well be decided depending on whether “Monty” - as Tigers fans affectionately call him - can keep fellow Saudi International Malik Mouath away from the Ittihad goal.

Posted Image

This morning, captain Mohammed Noor opted to talk to the press about the upcoming clash, and was insistent that nobody in the Ittihad camp was taking their opposition lightly;

Quote

“So, Mohammed, how do you feel ahead of the match tomorrow?”

Quote

“At the moment I am calm, as it is not my first Jeddah derby. I know what to expect. I know that the atmosphere will be electric and that our fans will be expecting 100% from each player on that field. It’s important we make a good start, because coming back from behind in the Jeddah derby is one serious task.”

Quote

“As we all know, Al-Ahli have strengthened their side with the capture of national team midfielder Khalid Aziz. How important do you think his presence will be for them tomorrow, and can you see him influencing the outcome?

Quote

“Of course it was a huge signing, and rightly made the front page. Khalid is a great player – one of the best in the country – and I have had the pleasure of playing on the same side as him many times with the national team. That question is easy because the answer is most definitely yes. Khalid will always make an impact for his team. We are just hoping that tomorrow we can keep his impact on the game to an absolute minimum.”

Quote

“Mohammed, many predict that Valdir Moraes will start a number of his new foreign signings tomorrow. Do you think that they realise just how big of a game this is for all concerned?”

Quote

“I don’t think that they can really know that at this point in time. We can’t expect them to. However, this does not mean that they don’t understand that this derby has a long history, and that the fans of both teams are demanding victory. Every country has these match-ups and I’m sure they’ve experienced something like this at some point in their career so far. As long as they give their all, I will have no problem with them whatsoever.
That will be all for now, thank you very much for you questions.”

Al-Ahli

Posted Image

Al-Ahli go into the game as slight underdogs, but mustn’t be overlooked. In Malik Mouath and Khalid Aziz they possess two of the country’s most talented players, and the rest of their squad is more than capable of challenging that of Al-Ittihad. They are expected to field a 4-1-2-2-1 formation, with Mouath the focal point of the attack alongside wingers Al-Thafagi and the Swede Zengin. Tayser Al-Jasim and Harison will line-up in central midfield, just in front of Aziz. A back four of Musa, Gahdali, Maïza and Hazzazi will be charged with stopping Ittihad’s two South American strikers from netting on their debuts.

Al-Ahli did not schedule a press conference and therefore their players were unable to speak to the media. It is believed that the management thought it better to keep the players focussed on their training and the task ahead behind closed doors.

Whatever happens tomorrow, it is sure to be a huge occasion in the Saudi League Calender. Head back here to the Saudi Gazette tomorrow for the Full Comprehensive Match Report and reactions of players and staff from both clubs. We’ll see you then.

I didn't actually make the credit card, found it online :shy: . Either someone has gone to a lot of trouble to make it themselves, or it's real :D

It really is a challenge finding decent pics and graphics for this team, because their website and all the other websites to do with Saudi Arabian football are only in Arabic and (as is the case with Translation in general) names of players etc are not spelt the same as they are in Football Manager/English so google searches are close to useless.

However, it means that when i do find something good I appreciate it much more :geek:

Thanks for reading and commenting felton. Should be adding the Match Report later on today if i can.

Hear the Tigers roar!

Al-Ittihad come from behind to win the Supercup in style by Hamzi Obaid

As derby victories go, this has got to be one of the most convincing. Tonight Al-Ittihad sent out a message of intent to their other big domestic challenger Al-Hilal. The boys in yellow and black proved that they are no-pushovers after going 1-0 down to a strong Al-Ahli side, before responding with 3 goals of their own to stun their city rivals. Inspired by captain Mohammed Noor the Tigers showed that, when it matters most, they have the ability and quality to dig deep and come through victorious.

Before the match:

Posted Image

As fans flocked through the stadium entrance, the tension began to build. One side of the stadium filled with Al-Ittihad yellow, whilst the other came alive with Al-Ahli green. Both sets of supporters tried to drown out their opposition’s chants with their own, and the noise could surely be heard for miles around. It wasn’t long before players from both teams came out onto the field for a short warm-up session.

Match Report:
First Half

Al-Ahli started the game stronger and more composed than their Jeddah neighbours. It seemed like Al-Ahli manager Stoycho Mladenov’s decision to ban all contact with the media yesterday had worked, with his team looking focussed and winning the early exchanges. Although on top of their rivals, Al-Ahli couldn’t find a way through Ittihad’s central defensive pairing of Al-Muntashri and Tordoya, and so it was no surprise that when the goal did come it arrived from out wide.

In the 12th minute, the ball was given to the left winger Al-Thafagi. Dribbling past Andrade with ease, Al-Thafagi sent in a ferocious looping cross. The Ittihad defence panicked and scrambled it away, only for headline signing Khalid Aziz to pop up unmarked outside the area and smash home. The green half of the stadium went ballistic. Aziz, the man signed from Al-Hilal in the biggest domestic transfer ever, had put his new club in front on his debut. Kissing his badge, he saluted to the Al-Ahli support, who cheered their new hero.

Al-Ittihad desperately needed to stop Al-Ahli from building on their own momentum. After the opening goal, the game became much more even. Both sides came close to scoring, but it wasn’t until just before half-time that the second goal of the match would come, and this time it was Al-Ittihad’s turn to celebrate.

Maybe it was because the interval was only a minute away, maybe it was due to fatigue, but for some reason the Al-Ahli defence lost their concentration for a split second, and the Tigers pounced.

Posted Image

Moroccan midfielder Nourdin Boukhari stepped up to take the free-kick after Khariree was fouled in the middle of Al-Ahli’s half. He sent a long ball into the crowded penalty area, which found its way to the feet of Mohammed Noor. The Saudi International, swivelling on his standing foot, left Aziz and Gahdali sprawled on the floor and fired past Al-Najayi to equalise before the break – giving the Tigers the psychological advantage over their rivals.

1-1 at half-time in an enthralling encounter between two of Saudi Arabia’s giants.

Second Half

The teams re-emerged from their dressing rooms for the second half, accompanied by thunderous cheering from their fans. However, only 3 minutes in and on his Ittihad debut Christián Benitez went down clutching his chest after a heavy collision with Kamel Musa. Benitez looked in agony as he lay still on the turf, and it was immediately apparent that this was serious. He tried to get up with the help of his teammates but the grimace on his face was obvious for all to see. Ittihad manager Valdir Moraes wasted no time in bringing Benitez off, replacing him with another debutee Enrique Esqueda, signed from América of Mexico. Both sets of fans applauded Benitez as he was carried off on a stretcher. It has since been revealed that he fractured 3 ribs in the collision and may be out for up to 3 months.

As luck would have it though, in the 67th minute it turned out to be Esqueda who put the Tigers in front. Boukhari delivered another menacing free-kick, and Hamad Al-Muntashri powered a header at goal, only to see his effort hit the crossbar and rebound out into the six yard box. Esqueda, with fresh legs, was the first to react, volleying into the net from close range. Ittihad had turned the tables and now looked in control of the match.

Ittihad continued to put pressure on the Ahli back four, but the same could not be said of Ittihad’s defence. Malik Mouath was anonymous upfront in the second half – man marked out of the game by the outstanding man of the match Al-Muntashri - and the wingers were ineffective when they did finally receive the ball.

If another goal was to come, Al-Ittihad were the only team that looked like scoring it and in the 74th minute they did just that. Suazo was pulled down in the area by Maïza, and he duly converted the spot-kick into the bottom left-hand corner to hand Ittihad this year’s Supercup. After starting so brightly, Al-Ahli had been overpowered by a better and more entertaining team. Who says that Al-Ahli won’t bounce back and record a victory in the next Jeddah derby, but if Al-Ittihad perform like this throughout the whole season, then it is difficult seeing anyone beating them to another league title.
