Al-Ittihad decide on Brazilian Moraes
by Yousif Al-Shahrani and Sultan Mahdi

Former manager, Argentinian Gabriel Calderón, had stepped down at the end of last season, citing homesickness and the need for a new challenge as his main reasons for leaving. The Al-Ittihad board decided against making a quick replacement for Calderón, and Moraes’s appointment is sure to be a big relief for the millions of Tigers fans who follow their team’s every move. Whilst still a force domestically, Al-Ittihad (which means "United "in Arabic) have gone into somewhat of a slump continentally since their 2004/2005 Asian Champion's League double, and Moraes will have to deal with the demands for more silverware.
Born in 1970 in Campo Grande, a city of 700,000, Moraes began his playing career with hometown club CENE in 1984 as a 14 year old. He moved on to Vila Nova of Goiâna in 1990 and helped them gain promotion back into the Brazilian Série B. Although rumoured to be close to signing for Atletico Mineiro in 1993, a move to Belo Horizonte never materialised and he eventually fell off the footballing radar, so to speak. That was until 2005 when Moraes returned home to coach his beloved CENE in the Third Division.
After 2 successful years, he made the step back up to Série B when he was offered the Manager’s job at Bahia. Placing the emphasis on youth and fast, attractive, attacking football Moraes guided Bahia to a Second place finish and promotion to Série A, before he accepted the approach by Al-Ittihad.
Speaking exclusively to the Saudi Gazette, with the aid of a translator, Moraes confirmed his delight at being in Jeddah.

It will be interesting to see how Moraes adapts to life as one of the 3.4 million citizens of Jeddah, and whether he can win the support of the notoriously passionate Ittihad fans.
