Gattuso only played the last game. They were definitely missing Pirlo. And Totti.
Cassano has toned it down anyway.

Being batsh*t crazy is a big part in why he is such a good player though.
And as mentioned by another poster, Cassano has grown up to some extent since joining Sampdoria and meeting his fiancée.
Gattuso, Zambrotta, Iaquinta, Cannavaro and the other over-the-hill guys shouldn't have been at the world cup. It's pretty clear Lippi let his personal bias get ahead of actually selecting the best possible team.
