Manchester United winger Antonio Valencia will miss the start of the new Barclays Premier League season due to injury after he broke his wrist in United's 5-0 win over Benfica yesterday afternoon at Old Trafford.
Manchester United have confirmed that winger Antonio Valencia suffered a broken wrist during their pre-season game against Benfica yesterday afternoon and will miss their opening day Barclays Premier League fixture against Manchester City.
Valencia landed awkwardly following a challenge moments before the half time break and was replaced at the break by Nani.
The Ecuadorian international has been at Old Trafford for three years now and has made 71 Barclays Premier League appearances scoring 10 times. The winger cost Sir Alex Ferguson more than £16 million when he departed Wigan Athletic.
The 27 year old could be available for selection again when United face Southampton at Old Trafford on the 25th August.

Manchester United are reportedly preparing a £30 million move for Tottenham Hotspur winger Gareth Bale.
Tottenham Hotspur winger Gareth Bale could become new Manchester United manager David Moyes first signing according to reports as the Old Trafford club prepare a £30 million bid for the Welsh international. It's believed the North London club want to retain the player but won't stand in his way should he wish to leave White Hart Lane for Old Trafford.
A source close to the player said should a club like Manchester United bid it'll be hard to resist.
"It's not about money for Gareth, he's got a very good contract at Spurs now, money isn't an issue," said the source.
"When a big club like Manchester United makes a bid you have to consider it because not many players get the chance to play for them. Gareth is very happy at Spurs and he's obviously extremely grateful for the support they've shown him during his career, but if Manchester United are serious about a transfer it'll be very hard for him to turn it down," added the source.
The 23 year old joined Spurs back in 2007 costing £5 million after impressing at Southampton and has since gone on to score 18 goals in 112 Barclays Premier League appearances. The winger has made 33 appearances for his country scoring on six occasions since making his debut for Wales against Trinidad and Tobago in 2006.

Former Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp believes Welsh international Gareth Bale is ready for a big move if interest from Manchester United is real and results in a big money transfer to Old Trafford.
Manchester United don't need to worry about Welsh international Gareth Bale adapting to life at a bigger club if he leaves White Hart Lane this summer according to former Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp.
Speculation is rife that Manchester United manager David Moyes is preparing a £30 million bid for the 23 year old winger.
"If they're serious about getting Gareth Bale they'll probably have to spend more than £30 million. I think Tottenham Hotspur have the upper hand because he's signed a new contract recently, but you never know what will happen," said Redknapp.
"Personally I know he's ready for a big club, he won't let anybody down, he's ready and Manchester United wouldn't be wasting a penny spending it on Gareth Bale. He's a fantastic player, quick, strong, creative and a good finisher, there aren't many better than him in the world right now," added the former Tottenham Hotspur manager.
Manchester United officials refused to comment on the transfer speculation when contacted by BBC Sport.
The 23 year old has scored 18 goals in the Barclays Premier League in 112 appearances. The winger has made 33 appearances for his country scoring on six occasions since making his debut for Wales against Trinidad and Tobago in 2006.

Manchester United have had a bid for winger Gareth Bale believed to be worth £32 million accepted by Tottenham Hotspur and will begin contract negotiations with the Welsh international later today.
Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed on their official website that they've accepted a bid believed to be worth £32 million from Manchester United for Gareth Bale. The 23 year old who has scored 18 goals in the Barclays Premier League for the North London club in 112 appearances will travel to Manchester later today with his representatives to begin contract negotiations and it's expected that the winger will become manager David Moyes first signing since he took charge at Old Trafford.
Bale scored nine times in the Barclays Premier League last season making 36 appearances and given his young age the Welsh international could be seen as a long term replacement for veteran winger Ryan Giggs who turns 39 in November.
The Welsh international has been backed by former Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp to be successful should he move to Old Trafford this summer in a deal that could break the Red Devils record transfer fee, the current record the £31 million Manchester United paid Tottenham Hotspur back in 2008 to acquire Bulgarian striker Dimitar Berbatov.
"Personally I know he's ready for a big club, he won't let anybody down, he's ready and Manchester United wouldn't be wasting a penny spending it on Gareth Bale. Manchester United wrapped up their pre-season preparations ahead of the new Barclays Premier League season with a dominant 6-1 win over Royal Antwerp this evening at the Bosuilstadion in Antwerp.
A 6-1 drubbing of Belgian side Royal Antwerp tonight at the Bosuilstadion in Antwerp indicates that Manchester United are well prepared for their opening day Barclays Premier League clash with Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium next weekend.
Goals from Danny Welbeck, Nemanja Vidić, Phil Jones, Nick Powell and Paul Scholes gave the English giants a comfortable win over their Belgian opponents as they wrapped up their pre-season fixtures in dominant fashion.
The main focus before and after kick off was the news that Tottenham Hotspur winger Gareth Bale could join the club in the next 48 hours, although new Manchester United manager David Moyes refused to comment on the subject.
"Obviously you know we've had a bid for Gareth accepted by Tottenham Hotspur and we're talking to the lad at the moment. I won't be discussing the transfer tonight, we need to respect the fact he's still a Tottenham Hotspur player and I don't feel it's necessary at this time to make any further comment about the situation," said the Scot.

Manchester United have completed the signing of Welsh international and Tottenham Hotspur winger Gareth Bale after agreeing personal terms with the player in a deal worth a reported club record fee of £32 million.
Gareth Bale is officially a Manchester United player after he agreed personal terms and completed a medical at Old Trafford earlier today. The 23 year old has signed a five year deal worth £110,000 a week and will wear the number nine jersey.
It's believed that the Red Devils have paid a club record transfer fee to secure Bales signature in a deal worth £32 million, the Welsh international costing £1 million more than Bulgarian striker Dimitar Berbatov who also swapped life at White Hart Lane for Old Trafford in a deal that cost then United manager Sir Alex Ferguson £31 million back in 2008.
Last week former Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp backed Bale to succeed at Old Trafford should a move materialise and he again backed the Welsh international to succeed following his big money move to Manchester.
"I said last week he wouldn't let anybody down and I still feel that way. The lad is only 23 so he's only going to get better and that's a scary thought, what will he be like in three, four or five years from now? He's picked the right club as well in my opinion, I mean Manchester United have a fantastic record with turning good players into world class players, look at the likes of Paul Scholes, David Beckham, Ryan Giggs and Cristiano Ronaldo, the list goes on and on," said Redknapp.
"At the moment he's one of the best players in Europe, only a handful of players are better and he's only going to improve by playing in the UEFA Champions League against quality opposition. In my opinion I think David Moyes has done fantastically well to complete a deal for the fee they're reporting in the media, it's a great piece of business, he'll win games for Manchester United and sell plenty of shirts because he's a star player," added the former Tottenham Hotspur manager.
Bale made 112 Barclays Premier League appearances scoring 18 goals for Tottenham Hotspur during his five year spell.
Tottenham Hotspur captain Michael Dawson revealed his disappointment after Bales transfer became official but conceded it would be very difficult for players to turn down a once in a lifetime opportunity to join a huge club like Manchester United.
"Losing a player like Gareth is disappointing and leaves a big hole for us to fill," said a disappointed Dawson.
"In saying that you can understand why he's moved, they're a massive club, arguably the biggest in the world and that opportunity doesn't come knocking on your door very often. There certainly isn't any bad feeling about the move, everybody understands and wishes Gareth well, although we're all confident he'll succeed because he's a top player and I think we'll mention him in the same breath as Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo in a few years," added the Tottenham Hotspur captain.
Bale scored nine times in 36 Barclays Premier League appearances for Tottenham Hotspur last season as they finished fourth, although they agonisingly missed out on the final UEFA Champions League spot as Chelsea took their place as competition winners following their dramatic penalty kick triumph against Bayern Munich in the final at the Allianz Arena.
The winger is currently recovering from a slight concussion that he suffered during a pre-season game against Bundesliga side HSV, the Welsh international on target as Tottenham Hotspur won 3-0 at White Hart Lane in what proved to be his last appearance for the club before joining Manchester United in a deal worth a reported fee of £32 million.
Bale is expected to be at least amongst the substitutes next Sunday when United meet bitter rivals Manchester City in the Manchester derby at the Etihad Stadium on the opening day of the new Barclays Premier League season.

Spanish giants Real Madrid are reportedly preparing a £20 million bid for Manchester United winger Nani following the recent arrival of Welsh international Gareth Bale from Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford.
Marca are reporting that Real Madrid manager José Mourinho has made Manchester United winger Nani his primary transfer target and is willing to spend at least £20 million to get his man, the recent arrival of Welsh international Gareth Bale at Old Trafford believed to have upset Nani who feels his playing time will be limited following the 23 year olds arrival.
United currently have plenty of options out wide with Ryan Giggs, Ashley Young, Antonio Valencia and now Bale all capable of operating on the wings. It's that competition for places that has reportedly upset the Portuguese international and could see him force a move away from Old Trafford, although an inside source at the club says new manager David Moyes sees the flamboyant winger as a key squad member and would most likely block any transfer this summer.
"I don't see Nani leaving Manchester United this summer regardless of the fee involved," said the source.
"The new manager sees Nani as a key player this season, he wants him to stay for many reasons, the main two being his creativity and skill, he's fantastic at creating chances for others. Nani won't play every game, nobody at the club will, but that's normal because big clubs like Manchester United play a lot of games over the course of a season. I mean we're talking over 50 games most seasons so you've got to rotate your squad to keep everybody fit," added the source.
Nani, 25, currently has two years remaining on his contract at Old Trafford, the Portuguese international signed back in 2007 for a fee of £17 million and he has gone on to make 125 Barclays Premier League appearances for United scoring 25 goals.

Manchester City goalkeeper Joe Hart will miss the Manchester derby this Sunday after suffering a minor knee injury yesterday during the warm up prior to England's friendly clash with Wales at Wembley.
Manchester United manager David Moyes says it's disappointing that Joe Hart has been ruled out of the Manchester derby on Sunday he injured his knee during England's warm up prior to their 1-0 victory over Wales at Wembley yesterday.
"Joe Hart is one of the best goalkeepers in Europe and it's disappointing he'll miss the game this Sunday. That may sound strange considering he plays for our rival but you want the best players playing in the big games, it's a real shame he'll miss the game but I'm glad it's not a serious injury for Joe and he'll be fit again in the near future," said Moyes.
The Manchester City goalkeeper is expected to miss at least a fortnight of action due to the minor knee injury.
Gomes is expected to make his City debut ahead of Costel Pantilimon on Sunday. The 31 year old, who has been capped six times by Brazil joined City last month penning a one year contract after leaving Tottenham Hotspur for £850,000.

"I'm very confident we can win on Sunday in the Manchester derby, in fact it's a certainty for me," said Mancini.
"Our record in these big games is very good, our preparation is good, our focus is good and don't forget we're champions. These things all make the players believe they can beat anybody and when we play at home we're always confident. For me this is just one game, a big game and I know the fans want us to win this game so we work even harder. We want to start as champions with a victory, this is very important and we're ready for Sunday, added the Manchester City manager.
The Citizens boss led his side to a dramatic title triumph on the final day of last season as Edin Džeko and Sergio Agüero scored in injury time to turn a 2-1 deficit against Queens Park Rangers into a 3-2 win that ultimately clinched the Barclays Premier League title on goal difference when it seemed the trophy was destined to remain at Old Trafford.
When asked if City can win back to back titles the Italian was confident in his squads ability to do so.
"For me we can win every competition this season as our squad is very, very good and I think we can win back to back titles. It won't be easy to do because this league is very difficult and you need some luck, but we know our quality and we know we're good enough because we're already champions of England," said a confident Mancini.
The Manchester derby on Sunday at the Etihad Stadium is a sell out with kick off scheduled for 16:00 GMT.

Manchester United manager David Moyes has dismissed claims his Red Devils side will simply look to avoid defeat when they face Manchester City tomorrow in the Manchester derby at the Etihad Stadium.
Manchester United are chasing three points in the Manchester derby tomorrow according to manager David Moyes who today dismissed claims that he's prepared to name a defensive side for his sides opening day Barclays Premier League clash with bitter rivals and current Barclays Premier League champions Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium tomorrow afternoon.
"Absolutely not, we're not setting out to just get a point tomorrow afternoon against Manchester City, no way, that's not the Manchester United way and never will be whilst I'm manager at this fantastic club," said a defensive Moyes.
The Scot who took charge last month following the unexpected retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson said his sides approach and results during their pre-season games proved he would retain the clubs traditional attacking values regardless of opposition.
"We played Benfica who are a very big club at Old Trafford and we attacked from start to finish, we absolutely battered them and won the game 5-0. Then against Royal Antwerp we won 6-1, those results prove we're going to attack against every side regardless of their stature and that's what we'll do tomorrow at the Etihad Stadium," said the Manchester United manager.
United will be without defender Chris Smalling (broken foot) and winger Antonio Valencia (broken wrist) tomorrow, however striker Robin van Persie, Tom Cleverley and new signing Gareth Bale are all available for selection following recent injuries, although when asked if they would start Moyes said he wouldn't reveal his starting lineup until the last minute.

Manchester City began their Barclays Premier League title defence in fine fashion this afternoon as they beat rivals Manchester United 3-1 at the Etihad Stadium as goals from Yaya Touré, Sergio Agüero and Carlos Tévez ensured there was no happy beginning for David Moyes as the new Manchester United manager.
An inspiring man of the match performance from Yaya Touré laid the platform for Manchester City to record a 3-1 opening day victory over bitter rivals Manchester United in the Manchester derby at the Etihad Stadium this afternoon, the reigning Barclays Premier League champions starting their title defence with victory just as manager Roberto Mancini had promised.
The result was perhaps a little harsh on the Red Devils who matched the hosts throughout and had to begin the game without stars Robin van Persie and Gareth Bale who were named amongst the substitutes following recent injury problems.
City started brightly and fashioned the first chance of the contest after just four minutes, new signing Thomas Müller picking out David Silva inside the area, the Spanish international denied by a smart save from United goalkeeper David De Gea, the hosts winning the first corner of the game and from it opening the scoring, a powerful header from Touré just a few yards out from goal leaving De Gea with no chance, the home fans sent into raptures after just five minutes.
The first caution of this feisty Manchester derby came some 10 minutes later as City skipper Vincent Kompany clattered Wayne Rooney on the edge of the City penalty area, referee Phil Dowd left with little option but to book the Belgian international.
As the game approached the half hour mark both sides created chances, the hosts almost doubling their lead as Silva found Müller with a perfect cross, the Germans header unfortunately straight at De Gea who pushed the effort away. It was then Gomes turn to perform heroics as he first denied Rooney from close range before quickly reacting to deny Nani who pounced on the rebound, the Brazilian who was making his debut for City making a stunning double save to keep his side ahead.

The visitors would soon regret those misses as City doubled their lead when a long ball forward from Joleon Lescott caught the United defence napping and Sergio Agüero took full advantage as he drove the ball low and hard past De Gea.
United could have halved the deficit minutes later only captain Nemanja Vidić couldn't keep his header down under pressure from Kompany. With the half time break approaching the game was all but taken out of the visitors reach when former United striker Carlos Tévez found a yard of space inside the box and latched onto a pass from Touré and with his first touch he rifled an unstoppable effort high into the roof of the United net beyond the reach of a desperate De Gea.
When the half time break did arrive there was no doubt who the happier manager would have been heading into the dressing rooms to deliver their half time team talk, City boss Roberto Mancini leaving things unchanged at the break whilst David Moyes made all three of his allowed substitutions as he sent on Phil Jones, Gareth Bale and Robin van Persie in the hope of turning things around, although even the most optimistic fan would have had a hard time dreaming of such a comeback.
Those changes did give the visitors a boost and they began to dominate proceedings in the early exchanges of the second half, an early warning sent when Nani sent a swerving and dipping long range shot which Gomes had to parry away.
On the hour mark United did get a goal back as Rooney and van Persie combined on the edge of the City area, the latter driving a first time effort through the legs of Gomes to give the visitors a glimmer of hope. There was however no stunning comeback at the Etihad Stadium as the reigning Barclays Premier League champions began their title defence with a win.

Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick has apologised to the clubs supporters for the teams poor performance in their 3-1 defeat against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium yesterday afternoon.
After suffering a disappointing 3-1 defeat in yesterdays Manchester derby at the Etihad Stadium midfielder Michael Carrick has apologised to the Manchester United fans for the poor performance produced in the clubs first Barclays Premier League outing under new manager David Moyes since his appointment last month following the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson.
"The result yesterday is obviously hard to take and a bitter pill to swallow after all the hard work done during pre-season. We went into the game believing we could win and confident we had the right plan in place to help us pick up the three points. Unfortunately we conceded very early and it was always going to be a struggle from that point on," said the midfielder.
"We know we've got to do better going forward and we've a lot of improving to do. The second half was better, but the damage had been done and sides like City don't let a 3-0 lead slip at home. Hopefully we can recover in our next game against Southampton at Old Trafford and we're sorry for letting the fans down yesterday," added Carrick.

Manchester United manager David Moyes has received a boost today after Northern Ireland international Jonny Evans returned to first team training for the first time in over three months following injury.
Jonny Evans has returned to first team training at Manchester United following almost four months on the sidelines with an ankle injury. The 24 year old made 29 Barclays Premier League appearances for the club last season and produced many strong performances at the heart of the Red Devils defence as they almost won the Barclays Premier League title.
The defender isn't likely to feature against Southampton this Saturday at Old Trafford but could be fit enough to be named amongst the substitutes when the Red Devils make the trip to the DW Stadium to face Wigan Athletic next month.
Speaking to the clubs official website the defender was clearly happy to be back in training.
"It's such a relief to be back with the boys training everyday. I'm very lucky to be able to do what I love for a job, but believe me it isn't fun at all when you're injured and know you can't play. It's a tough time and every player will tell you that, when you're injured your entire personality changes, you're not the same person and it can be terrible," said the 24 year old.
"I'm looking forward to making a return to first team action, it'll be great and obviously we've a new manager so things are a little bit different than before. We didn't start well against City but it's just one game, we can't dwell on it for to long, we've just got to learn from it and improve. We know we're good enough to win the league and that's the main target this season. Everybody is confident we can finish top come the end of May and we'll work hard to achieve that goal," added Evans.
Evans is a product of the clubs famous youth academy. The Northern Ireland international has made a total of 77 Barclays Premier League appearances for United scoring once and has two years remaining on his contract at Old Trafford.

A disappointing 3-1 defeat against bitter rivals Manchester City on the opening weekend of the Barclays Premier League season last Sunday wasn't the way Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney wanted to begin the reign of new manager David Moyes but the England star believes he and his teammates must quickly forget about that result.
"Losing the Manchester derby is never easy for the players, it hurts us a lot and it isn't a pleasant feeling knowing that you've let a lot of fans down when you don't perform well in those types of matches," said the Manchester United striker.
"After a few days though you've got to move on, put it behind you, not forget it, you want to remember those horrible feelings and hopefully avoid ever feeling that way again, but you must move on and get your head in the right place for the next game which usually is just a few days away at a big club like Manchester United," added Rooney.
Rooney, 26, played the full game against City at the Etihad Stadium last Sunday and created the opportunity for Dutch striker Robin van Persie on the hour mark that at least ensured the Red Devils got on the scoresheet in the Manchester derby.
United host Southampton tomorrow afternoon at Old Trafford and Rooney has called on his teammates to pick their first Barclays Premier League victory under new manager David Moyes who replaced Sir Alex Ferguson last month.
"We've a very important game against Southampton tomorrow, a game we really need to win to get our season kick started and obviously you want to win every game at Old Trafford for the fans. It would be fantastic to also win the bosses first game in charge at Old Trafford, that'd be a real good start and it'd create a great feeling around the club, but we know it won't be easy because Southampton will be very confident after beating Chelsea last weekend," said Rooney.
Rooney, who has been capped 77 times by England, has three years remaining on his £180,000 a week contract.

Manchester United produced a ruthless performance at Old Trafford this afternoon as they thumped Southampton 6-0 to hand David Moyes his first Barclays Premier League victory since his appointment.
Southampton suffered a demoralising defeat at Old Trafford this afternoon as Manchester United bounced back from their Manchester derby defeat at the Etihad Stadium last Sunday in fine fashion by recording an impressive 6-0 victory.
Goals from United captain Nemanja Vidić, Gareth Bale and Danny Welbeck set the hosts on their way whilst Southampton keeper Artur Boruc suffered the embarrassment of scoring an own goal Old Trafford. The game was over by the half time break as the Red Devils raced into an impressive 4-0 lead before the break in what was David Moyes first Barclays Premier League game in charge at the Theatre of Dreams since his appointment last month as Sir Alex Ferguson's replacement.
The visitors afternoon in Manchester didn't start well as defender José Fonte was stretchered off inside the opening few minutes after suffering what appeared to be a serious ankle injury after an awkward tangle with Wayne Rooney.
It was immediately evident that the Saints would struggle without Fonte at set pieces and Vidić almost opened the scoring when he headed a Michael Carrick free kick against the visitors post. The hosts did take the lead moments later when Carrick again found Vidić inside the area, this time from a corner, the Serbian again striking the woodwork with his effort, although this time the rebound struck Boruc as it came back off the crossbar before crossing the line.
Southampton never recovered following that early setback and Bale made it 2-0 just four minutes later with his first goal for Manchester United since his reported £32 million move from Tottenham Hotspur, the Welsh international calmly placing the ball beyond Boruc after winger Nani had delivered a low cross from the right hand side.
The hosts looked completely in control and they increased their lead on the half hour mark when Vidić finally hit the target with a header, the United skipper rising unmarked inside the area to powerfully divert Carrick's corner into the back of the net to give the Red Devils a commanding 3-0 lead much to the dismay of the travelling Saints fans inside Old Trafford.

Saints captain Rickie Lambert did his best to reduce the deficit and came within inches of doing so when he rattled David De Gea's crossbar twenty minutes from time and even if the effort had gone in it would have done little to hide the gulf in class between the two sides on an August afternoon that went along way to silencing the critics who believe Moyes will fail at Old Trafford, the former Preston North End and Everton manager under immediate pressure as Sir Alex Ferguson's successor.

Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand was delighted by his teammates response after they hammered Southampton 6-0 at Old Trafford just six days after suffering defeat in the Manchester derby.
A 6-0 win for Manchester United in new manager David Moyes first competitive fixture at Old Trafford was just what the club needed after losing the Manchester derby last weekend according to experienced defender Rio Ferdinand.
"It's really tough coming in to train after a defeat and even tougher when it's against City," says Ferdinand.
"To win so convincingly was fantastic and I'm sure the fans appreciated the quality in our performance. It was a great team performance and we scored some really good goals, it was nice to see Danny and Gareth bag a brace each. We can't think about that game for to long though because we've got to go play Wigan and that is never easy," added the defender.
Ferdinand, 33, has been capped 81 times by England during his illustrious career and despite winning almost everything possible at club level the experienced defender is adamant that he remains hungry to win more trophies.
"The day you lose that hunger is the day you should retire regardless of the level you're playing at. That's just my opinion obviously, but I do feel as if that hunger gives you the edge to win a tackle, to win a header, to stick your body on the line without hesitation when you know it could end badly and afterwards think it's worth it," said the 33 year old.
"Personally I remain hungry to win. I actually think I've become hungrier, more competitive after every winners medal and that's helped me stay in the first team at a big club like Manchester United," added Ferdinand.
The Red Devils travel to the DW Stadium to face Wigan Athletic next Saturday and will be keen to avoid a repeat of last seasons result, a 1-0 defeat proving costly as they failed to retain the Barclays Premier League title as bitter rivals Manchester City turning around an eight point deficit in the final weeks of the season to win the title on goal difference.

Manchester United manager David Moyes has confirmed that defender Rafael has avoided a serious injury and will only miss the clubs upcoming Barclays Premier League clash against Wigan Athletic at the DW Stadium.
Brazilian international Rafael will miss his sides trip to the DW Stadium this weekend after injuring his thigh during Manchester United's 6-0 triumph over Southampton last Saturday at Old Trafford. The defender should however be fit before West Ham United visit Old Trafford after the international break, his injury not to serious according to United boss David Moyes.

The defender currently has four years remaining on his contract at Old Trafford and is expected to be the clubs first choice right back this season.

Manchester United have been handed a tough UEFA Champions League group as the draw in Monaco paired them with Russian side Zenit St Petersburg, Italian side Udinese and Scottish champions Celtic in Group H.
If new Manchester United manager David Moyes had been hoping for a comfortable group following the UEFA Champions League draw in Monaco he got the exact opposite as the Red Devils were handed a tricky and unpredictable group.

United would have been full of confidence heading into the game at the DW Stadium following their 6-0 thumping of Southampton at Old Trafford last Saturday and when they took the lead after just four minutes through Danny Welbeck's goal the travelling supporters must have thought their team would record another convincing victory.
The young United striker netted his third goal of the Barclays Premier League season in as many games as he tapped home from a few yards out after Wigan Athletic keeper Ali Al-Habsi failed to hold onto a powerful shot from Nani, the 21 year old unlikely to be gifted an easier chance this season, United off to the perfect start at the DW Stadium.
If the hosts thought things couldn't get worse they were mistaken as United doubled their advantage when Shinji Kagawa picked out Wayne Rooney inside the area with a fine pass, the England striker making no mistake as he calmly placed the ball beyond Al-Habsi to make it 2-0 to the visitors, Rooney the finisher, Kagawa the sublime architect.

Wigan Athletic manager Paul Jewell could have been forgiven for thinking his side were in for a long day after the opening 21 minutes but just six minutes later his side were inspired by a thunderous Arouna Koné goal from over 30 yards out, United keeper David De Gea left with no chance as the Ivory Coast striker netted his third Barclays Premier League goal in style.
That gave the hosts a massive lift and they began to match their more illustrious opponents in every department, the visitors suddenly looking unsure whilst in possession, the hosts gaining in confidence as the half time interval approached and they wouldn't go in behind, a corner headed home by Mauro Boselli, the striker netting his first Barclays Premier League goal for the Latics since his £6.5 million move from Argentine side Estudiantes de La Plata back in June 2010.
With things level at the break it would be safe to assume United boss David Moyes wouldn't have been pleased with his side after they'd let a two goal advantage slip. After the break United were almost immediately back in front as skipper Nemanja Vidić rattled the Latics crossbar with a header that had Al-Habsi beaten and the Latics keeper was again busy when called upon to deny Gareth Bale as he acrobatically tipped the Welshman's free kick over his crossbar.

"The result yesterday was extremely disappointing if I'm totally honest," revealed the England international.
"When you're leading 2-0 you shouldn't let the lead slip away and it's really disappointing just to pick up a draw. I don't mean to be disrespectful to Wigan because they fought back and they deserve credit for that, but we know we should be winning that type of game when we're 2-0 up inside the opening half hour or so, we've got to do better," added Welbeck.

Manchester United midfielder Tom Cleverley has suffered another injury setback after he injured his groin during a sprint session at training today which will keep him sidelined for at least a fortnight.
Tom Cleverley will have to wait at least another two weeks to make his first appearance of the season after suffering a minor groin strain during training earlier today. The 23 year old was taking part in a sprint session when the injury occurred and was immediately assessed by the clubs medical staff with scans later revealing Cleverley had suffered no major damage.
The midfielder made just 10 Barclays Premier League appearances for the Red Devils last season in an injury plagued campaign. Cleverley who currently has three years remaining on his contract at Old Trafford was understandably frustrated by this latest injury setback, although he was quick to point out that things could always be worse.

"It's another frustrating injury, something small, nothing major, but it does upset me," said Cleverley.
"Obviously it could have been worse and I'm grateful it's only minor. I can take missing two or three weeks, I mean that's better than surgery and a long rehabilitation process, thankfully I won't be out for long," added the midfielder.
Cleverley spent almost five months on the sideline last season with two separate ankle injuries and had only just returned to the first team recently following a thigh injury that he had suffered during United's pre-season clash with Dundee.
United have ruled the midfielder out of their upcoming clashes with West Ham United, Celtic and Liverpool although they're confident that he'll play some part against Swansea in the Capital One Cup third round clash at Old Trafford.

From start to finish the hosts controlled proceedings as the Hammers struggled throughout to contain Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie.
United started brightly and were given a fantastic opportunity to take the lead after just eight minutes, referee Mike Jones awarding the Red Devils a penalty after James Tomkins had bundled van Persie over inside the area, replays suggesting Jones had made the correct call. The Dutch striker picked himself up off the Old Trafford turf, dusted himself off and despatched the spot kick with power beyond Jussi Jääskeläinen, the Dutch striker clearly full of confidence.
The visitors managed to remain focussed following that early setback and looked somewhat comfortable after going behind, although there were warning signs it may not remain 1-0 for long as United winger Nani caused problems for the Hammers defence, Jääskeläinen called upon twice in quick succession to keep out long range efforts from the Portuguese international.
It wasn't long however until United doubled their advantage, a superb tackle by Mark Noble on van Persie saw the ball fall fortuitously to Rooney who with his first touch played a sublime pass into the path of Anderson who had made a lung busting run from midfield, the Brazilian international making no mistake as he blasted an effort into the bottom corner.

Things could have gotten worse for the visitors four minutes later when van Persie's corner found Jonny Evans free inside the area, a smart stop from Jääskeläinen denying United their third of the afternoon. From the resulting corner there was nothing Jääskeläinen could do when Evans again met Van Persie's delivery, this time the post and then a goal line clearance from Tomkins denied the United centre back his first Barclays Premier League goal of the season.
Just before the half time interval the game was all but over as a contest as Rooney, who was later named man of the match for his stunning display, made it 3-0 with a stunning half volley, the 26 year old latching onto Anderson's smart flick, the Hammers defence caught napping as Rooney was left unattended within the area, Jääskeläinen left with no chance as the ball sat up for the England international to drive it powerfully into the top corner from just a few yards out.
The convincing win against the Hammers at Old Trafford was exactly what Manchester United boss David Moyes would have wanted prior to his sides opening Group H fixture against Celtic at Celtic Park on Wednesday night in the UEFA Champions League. The Red Devils have been paired in a tough Group H alongside Zenit St Petersburg, Udinese and Celtic.

Manchester United striker Robin van Persie believes he's settling in quickly at Old Trafford and the Dutch striker believes his partnership with Wayne Rooney will only get better as they play more games together.
Robin van Persie has begun life at Manchester United in fine form, the Dutch striker scoring two goals in four Barclays Premier League appearances, a debut strike against bitter rivals Manchester City in the Manchester derby on the opening day of the Barclays Premier League season and a penalty yesterday against West Ham United at Old Trafford.
The Dutch international, who scored 30 goals in 38 Barclays Premier League appearances last season for Arsenal, left the Gunners in a deal worth £24 million during the summer and has hit the ground running at Old Trafford.
The 29 year old believes he's settling in quickly at Old Trafford and will soon be at his best.
"I think I've started really well at the club and I'm enjoying my football which is always important. I've scored a few goals which is always nice as a striker needs to score goals to feel confident. I've settled in really quickly, I was nervous at first because Manchester United is a huge club, but everybody has been fantastic since my arrival," said van Persie.
When asked about his relationship with Wayne Rooney the former Arsenal captain hailed the England international and van Persie backed the pair to strike up a formidable partnership that will cause headaches for defences.
"Wayne is a fantastic footballer and he'd walk into any side at any club, that's how good he is. When you play with Wayne you don't think you can lose, you're given a huge boost when he's in your team," said the Dutch international.
"I think as we play more and more together our partnership will get stronger. It has the potential to be the best in the world and I feel we seen it improving throughout the game yesterday. I think we can strike up a very good understanding which will help the club challenge for trophies in England and Europe. Also we must not forget about Danny Welbeck and Javier Hernández who are both very talented strikers as well, we've got very good options in attack," added van Persie.
Van Persie signed a four year deal following his £24 million move during the summer worth a reported £180,000 a week.

Manchester United defender Phil Jones is confident the Red Devils can recorded a positive result tomorrow night at Celtic Park when they face Celtic in their opening UEFA Champions League Group H fixture.

"A positive result is important tomorrow night and I'm confident we can get it," said the defender.
"It'll be a tough game against Celtic, they're a big club with fantastic fans and some of the lads who have played at Celtic Park have said it's a really tough place to go because of the atmosphere the fans create. We're use to playing under pressure though, every game we go into we're expected to perform well and win, tomorrow night will be no different," added Jones.
The 20 year old cost United a reported fee of £16.5 million when he joined from Blackburn Rovers last season.
Jones made 29 Barclays Premier League appearances in his maiden season at Old Trafford and has so far featured in every Barclays Premier League game under new manager David Moyes, although three of his four appearances have been as a substitute, the defenders only start against Wigan Athletic in a game that finished 2-2 at the DW Stadium.
The Group H clash tomorrow night at Celtic Park is a sell out with kick off scheduled for 19:45 GMT.
