Peak Rio was >>>>> over Terry. Terry was okay but I think it's the case of English footballers being over-rated because of their 'effort and determination' over technical ability. Terry 2010-onwards is frighteningly bad. Ferdinand anyday.

Now we can have Cahill, Jagielka and Lescott (oh..) to come in though, and hopefully they will be stable defensively and outperform Terry and Ferdinand.

Over the next 5 years players like Gerrard, Lampard, Ashley Cole will be retiring and the so-called 'golden generation' will be gone. Maybe the media hype will slow (unlikely) but it's a promising time for England, especially with the FA youth approach.
Rio was brilliant against Liverpool too, MOTM for me, but I hope he tells Roy to shove his cap up his arse if he comes for him now. Think Roy will stick with the players he's got now though.

He looks like a dog chasing a football...
Jagielka - Lescott is where it's at. I'd have Rio in there seeing as he's still good for us but I can't see Roy backtracking.

Nice to see Terry quitting as soon as the FA question him though, not even found him guilty yet. When you see the likes of Rio who got banned for 8 months and royally fucked over by the FA for a mistake and who got looked over for every man and his dog for the Euro's, and still hasn't quit.

Smalling Lescott when Smalling gets fit again for me.

Smalling is a seriously good defender.

Smalling is a seriously good defender.

He's undoubtedly got talent but he's got much to prove before he can jump ahead of the likes of Cahill and Jagielka in the pecking order.

He wasn't convicted in a court of law, then the FA decide to take their own action on top of that. Doing so doesn't really leave Terry in much of a position to continue to play for the NT does it. If he does, he's going to continue being hounded over everything that's happened, it's always going to remain an issue- just as it has for the FA to drag it out further. If he quits, which is the decision Terry has made, it removes that element completely from the NT. There won't be continued jabs at him for being picked, questions of if he should be there or not, etc.

It's a decision that benefits both himself and England, in terms of ending the situation and the continued jugements.

Comparing Rio and Terry's situations is liking comparing apples and oranges.

Either way, it benefits Chelsea and hopefully prolongs his club career. I'm all for that.

In b4 TS starts wanking over Fraser Forster inclusion.

Nah, I'm glad he's finally been recognised for his outstanding form the past two seasons and his performances in Europe in particular. Easy to think that Hodgson was never going to consider him just because he plays north of the border.
And the England squad for the upcoming World Cup 2014 qualifiers against San Marino and Poland is as follows…

Goalkeepers: Fraser Forster (Celtic), Joe Hart (Man City), John Ruddy (Norwich)

Defenders: Leighton Baines (Everton), Gary Cahill (Chelsea), Ashley Cole (Chelsea), Kieran Gibbs (Arsenal), Phil Jagielka (Everton), Glen Johnson (Liverpool), Joleon Lescott (Man City), Ryan Shawcross (Stoke), Kyle Walker (Tottenham)

Midfielders: Michael Carrick (Man Utd), Tom Cleverley (Man Utd), Steven Gerrard (Liverpool), Adam Johnson (Sunderland), Aaron Lennon (Tottenham), Frank Lampard (Chelsea), James Milner (Man City), Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (Arsenal), Theo Walcott (Arsenal)

Forwards: Andy Carroll (West Ham), Jermain Defoe (Tottenham), Wayne Rooney (Man Utd), Danny Welbeck (Man Utd)

Yeah I totally agree, you get this sort of situation a lot with national teams, players being ignored for no apparent reason and Forster always seemed like one of the best alternatives we've got to me. Common sense really for him to be called up, especially when we've seen the likes of Butland get called up based essentially on good form in League Two and media hype.

Plus I dig the Newcastle link
Tbf it's probably better including Butland seeing it'll do him well with the England set up at his age, although saying that Forster is only like 4 years yougner? What I'm trying to say is Joe Hart is pretty much guaranteed a place, so choosing the younger one could be a better option.

Yeah, I was livid when Butland got the nod ahead of Forster after Ruddy's injury before the Euros. Am I right in thinking that before his call-up Butland had only ever featured at League Two level? I know the SPL is of relative poor quality but Forster was consistently good for us last season and put in some solid performances in the Europa League. Delighted that he's finally got the accreditation he deserves through this call-up.

Would be nice to see Hooper called up in the next squad if his form keeps up but that seems extremely unlikely.
Has anyone read The Sun today? Hodgson is being labelled BLUNDERMOUTH for telling a fan on the tube Ferdinand is no longer in his plans. Six pages of BLUNDERGROUND jokes, a full length underground map cartoon with humorous stops like VICTORIO.

It's so fucking feeble and boring. There was some horrible opinion piece by Steven Howard where he called Hodgson a travesty and then quickly moved it onto how it was DISGRACEFUL THEY PICKED HODGSON OVER REDKNAPP, FERDINAND HAS BEEN A LOYAL SERVANT etc.

Gary Neville was very eloquent in pointing out how Ferdinand had made two competitive appearances (I think) in the last two years for England and it just seems like this is yet again the rather boring attempts by tabloids to drum up bullshit.

Read The Times to get context and they have a small 200 word side article about BLUNDERGROUNDGATE, so I think I'm right on this one.
It's The Sun, hardly surprising that they've produced a horrendous article is it?
Their sports reporting is usually pretty good, it just feels like this whole situation is being engineered because of the media in general's love of Harry Redknapp. I would love for Redknapp to be in charge, England deserve that melted face cunt.
Yeah, despite the fact I'm English and want England to do well, I actually wish Redknapp would be given the job because I think he'd get totally found out as being a poor tactical manager, proving the media wrong and they may then just let the FA get on with appointing their own man in future. Even though Roy struggled as manager of Liverpool, I think that his start as England manager has been good and wish the media would get over Redknapp and let Roy get on with the job without these personal attacks on him

Careful there, that's not the official party line.
I still find it hard that Hodgson would divulge such information in a subway of all places.

I'll see you
Redknapp would at least of been fun. Hodgson is boring and smelly.
The fact that Hodgson is so openly annoyed about not being able to play John Terry due to him being a massive bellend, yet treats Rio with so little respect is quite strange really.
How he he treated him with a lack of respect?

By not putting him in squads? Ferdinand doesn't have some god given right to be in there and besides Terry has been better than him for a while now.
The whole situation has been poorly handled but I think Hodgson's acted accordingly up to now. He was a bit of a fool to be talking about it on the tube but it's been massively blown out of proportion.

One has played semi-regularly for his club side for the last two years, one is a captain and regular starter for the current European champions. Love/hate of racism/adultery/cuntthuggery aside it seems fairly obvious why he favours Terry over Ferdinand.
Telling people on the tube you won't pick him again before announcing the squad is pretty disrespectful given Rio had a fare shout of being in it on form and who else is available. Saying you are not picking him for footballing reasons, then picking inferior players, then saying he is too old, then picking older players and players of a similar age could also be seen as pretty disrespectful. Why not just tell him the truth?

I wouldn't say Terry has been any better than Rio either, I've seen him exposed plenty of times in the last 18 months.

Terry played 1 more game in the league last season. And as for captain and regular starter for the European champions, he got himself needlessly sent off in the semi final and didn't play in the final so maybe more credit should go to the other Chelsea defenders.

I agree, the other eleven games were totally redundant in Chelsea's road to success.

I also agree that Rio Ferdinand has been consistently excellent over the previous two years at both club and international level, thus making him a competent alternative to John Terry (or partner if you want to be diplomatic).

I also agree that at 33 (34 in a month) and with his best years ahead of him it certainly makes sense to have Rio Ferdinand, a consistently high quality player over the last two years, as a potential starter instead of other, younger players who don't need vital international experience.

However I don't agree that the only value Ferdinand would bring to the England team would be for the media's benefit in making Rio based puns. No, if I agreed with just that I'd be a moron.
All very good points, I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree.

I must concede Terry was fantastic for Chelsea last season, especially during the CL winning run where he starred in the group stage defeat to Leverkusen and draw with Valencia whilst missing three of the other group matches. I also enjoyed him at his towering best in the 4-1 defeat to Liverpool and the 5-3 against Arsenal, to name two of his finer moments of the successful league campaign where they secured a fine 6th place finish.

I also forgot that during the Euros he was simply superb and was at no point made to look like a League Two plodder. I can't recall a single occasion of him being bounced around and outpaced by opposing forwards or him breaking the defensive line and almost costing England goals.

Rio may be too old for England, but he's not the only one.

I'd agree completely with this, but when you consider Gerrard's performance at the Euros and the fact that he's captain, in comparison with Rio's lack of selection in recent years, it's understandable as to why Hodgson has made the decisions he has. I'd probably agree that Lampard should really be in the same boat as Rio though.
