I can picture the press release afterward right now:

Scientists say he survived the leap, the extreme temperatures and breaking the sound barrier.

"It was the abrupt stop that killed him", explained Red Bull's head science guy.

Isn't a human's terminal velocity about 180mph?

It says he'll be going at 'supersonic speeds', so I've no idea what the craic is there

Brillant waste of money...

concerning "supersonic speed": lets see if the air drag will allow this at all. of course its less up there but lets see...
and what if he crashes together with a plane?

Yeah, I didn't consider how reduced the drag is when the air is that thin.

And the temperature plays a big role as well. The colder, the better.

He'll be wearing a pressure suit and a similar jump was successfully performed by Joseph Kittinger back in the 1950's.

It really isn't as crazy as it might appear on the first look.

course its a totally unjustified hype, we´ve seen things like that before , i think that should be obvious. but the fact that theres a thread on it here, why not commenting on this money-wasting circus?

Just to satisfy my curiosity, when have you seen a man sky dive from 27 miles?

There are plenty of videos of the Kittinger jump on YouTube.

I wasnt adressing a 27m jump especially, it was meant more general like other even more unusual or call it "crazy" things.

I didn't realise 19 miles now also meant 27 miles. This is a record breaking attempt, not a record equalling one.

Jonathan Clark, the medic that accompanies him, said they could get some more knowledge about how air spreads or gets supressed by man in those heights and what effects it has on him, as they already know it when it comes to planes but not what happens to that when its a single man.
but then again - is this really necessary to know?

It's Red Bull, so it's straight publicity. All the other benefits are incidental, these is all about those sweet, sweet column inches.

Course its the red bull. But then again, why not let Thierry Henry jump ? now THAT would be publicity

Money spent on what is ultimately the pursuit of pleasure and science? Never a waste.

Clearly planes will not be in the area as they will have been given clearance
