I've managed to get the custom badge in but the image is out of focus despite being in the right format and size, and i've tried another image as well, which was also blurry

Sounds like you're resizing a picure without checking the resolution - sometimes it's ridiculously high and results in blurred images when made bigger, so try changing it to 72px per inch while keeping the dimensions the same.
