#329225 2015/16 Barclays Premier League Thread

Its a two part issue. On the one hand, I don't think Pardew was great and I don't think we were wrong to want his exit. But that was built on the naive assumption we could find someone better, and until they pulled Benitez out of their arse with no real time to change the culture at the club, they couldn't. And that's down the drain too because he could only get 2 points from Norwich, Sunderland and Villa, and just couldn't galvanise them in a way the succession of late-on Mackem appointments has, and next year its obviously going to be someone like Nigel Pearson.
But I do agree with your other point that he was clearly a stronger presence at Newcastle than we thought. The board were clearly not expecting his departure 18 months ago, and ran around like headless chickens for a month before settling for two incompetent freebies in a row. McClaren was a disaster from the start kept in for far too long by Charnley, and that 18 day period off after the Chelsea thumping is perhaps the biggest waste of time possible.
Its pretty clear Charnley has to go and Graham Carr has to be kept away from France, Belgium and Holland. But in terms of the second tier, this won't be like it was in 2009-10 - I'm expecting a closer season to those of Blackburn, Fulham or QPR in recent years, where there's lots of changes, no consistency, and the odd embarrassing defeat to a side going to League One. Even if most the players are tossers who went missing too often, few squads go up on the back of changing everyone.
And sure, I know its not mathematically confirmed yet. But for all the good Everton and Watford will do, why bother getting hopes up.

No shit. And also thinks Sammy Ameobi is a good player when most Cardiff City fans have fed back from his loan there that he's been mostly shit.

Oh come on are you still prattling on about Pardew? He was a fucking spent force and getting rid of him was a good idea. As much as buying lamentable cowards was a mistake, it was not getting rid of him - more that replacing him with John Carver and McClaren was a fucking disaster.

Why bother? That looked a nasty one even before you saw the mark it left on Ramirez's leg.

Meanwhile, Newcastle have released Gabriel Obertan and Sylvain Marveaux from their contracts early. Good riddance.

Least I predicted one thing right.

Hence why I said predicting is a "bit of a bitch". It usually seems to be the case that at least one of the three teams you think will be promoted fucks it up. Ipswich is a strange one - they look in a position for a BPL surge, but they seem to be in a very uneasy place. Also, yeah, Boro looked in an uneasy place when Karanka nearly walked out.
To be fair, Fulham were a basketcase last season so it was likely they might, even if in entertaining style where they've inexplicably got a top quality strikeforce and a rotten defensive unit.

Still, fair play to Leicester, and well done to Spurs for finding a truly magnificent way to fuck it up (and with any luck give us an easy win on the final day by getting all their good players retrospectively banned)
Harsh, but fair

Of the also-rans in the second tier, I'd say other clubs are in a better place for a play-off challenge than QPR - Cardiff have good money, while Ipswich & Birmingham have the bare bones of a promotion team (if not the consistency). And that's before the fact three of Middlesbrough, Brighton, Hull, Derby & Wednesday will still be there next year, and three absurdly wealthy ex-PL teams are coming down too. Personally, I fancy SWFC to go up either this season or next.
Then again last year, Brighton were lucky to avoid relegation and now potentially a win in the ultimate jackpot game from a place in the Premier League. So it is a bit of a bitch to predict next season before any transfers are made.

I'd like to see Brighton in the Premier League and they deserve something after going 20+ games unbeaten at the start of the campaign, but equally I think Middlesbrough's team looks better equipped for the BPL, and I can imagine them wanting to avoid repeating being beaten in the play-off final. So... dunno.

Ideally, but Sunderland and Norwich have a game in hand (technically the Canaries currently have 2 given their game at Arsenal kicks off in 5).
Hence my worry of how much we're in the potential situation of banking on a double favour from one of Watford or Everton, who play both Mackems & Canaries in the final 2 games of the season. If I was to stick my neck out I'd say its likely between us and Sunderland, as I don't see Norwich getting enough points off of Arsenal and Manchester United, but you can never predict anything accurately in this situation.
I could curse either Bobby Madley's atrocious refereeing at the Stadium of Light, or Mike Dean ignoring Johnny Howson's double handball at Norwich for not giving us a bigger margin, but its our own fault we need other results to go our way as well as winning as many points as possible.

Still, all we can do is win as many as we can, and we did. So thank fuck for that today. Onto the next'un.

And yeah, I guess ultimately, Newcastle have to win as many points as possible and if its not enough then its our own fucking fault for being down there. We'll see really. But I guess it only really hit me yesterday that the other two rivals for the drop have to face the same opponents, which I didn't really know until the reinforcement of this fact by all the "Here's the remaining games" stuff.
If we only get 2 points and that keeps us up, then that's a fair contender for shittest end to the season ever from a neutral POV. Not that I'd care, ofc.

I think we need 9/9 points ideally, though, and even that may well not be enough. Either that or I'm over-complicating things.
