Yes, you understand the problem. In the editor (third image of the previous comment) there are colors set for each kit (in some cases not) and if they don't match with the customized 3D kits you risk seeing in-game kits with colors that don't match.kit 23...
Because the "correction" of the colors is done based on the 2d kits. However, you can integrate further changes to the KKC yourself with the pre-game editor, or during the game with the in-game one 👍
