It took Rangers all the way to penalties to defeat Raith Rovers and book themselves a place in the Challenge Cup Third Round,
Ally McCoist's men looked the livelier side in the early stages, with Ian Black testing Raith Goalkeeper David McGurn with a long range effort within the opening quarter of an hour.
The pressure continued, and three minutes later, the Gers had the all in the net through Barrie McKay but referee Andrew Muir decided that there had been a foul during the build up and awarded Raith Rovers a free-kick instead.
The chances continued to come from the League Two Champions and Fraser Aird and Barrie McKay had chances to score but both players were unable to keep their shots on target.
Raith Rovers finally began to oppose themselves onto the game and had a chance to score against the run of play minutes before half-time when Liam Fox beat David Templeton to a free ball and fired a shot at goal but Alan Smith had an easy save to make.
It took seven minutes into the second half for the tie to get into full swing when David Templeton continued to show just why he is one of Rangers' key players when he used his skill to beat Grant Murray and hit a sublime effort that left McGurn with no chance.
The opening goal sparked the game into life when both McGurn and Smith in opposing goals had saves to make as both sides really started to have a go at each other.
The score was leveled on 81 minutes when Rovers were awarded a penalty when Liam Dickinson went down in the box under a Ross Perry challenge and the player got himself back up to convert the resulting spot kick.
With the game level on 90 minutes the match continued into extra time and the Light Blues re-established an early lead when Barrie McKay coolly finished from a superb Ian Black through ball to set Rangers up for the win.
The lead didn't last long, with Andrew Muir awarding yet another penalty, prompting furious backlash from the Rangers players, under almost identical circumstances with Dickinson falling under a Perry challenge. This time Liam Fox stood up and slotted the ball into the bottom corner.
Extra time finished as the scores were still level so then, to penalties, and after both sides scored their first four kicks, Player/Manager Grant Murray missed for Raith but Kyle Hutton scored to bring some relief to the travelling support.
Rangers Manager Ally McCoist:
"We got the win and that is the most important thing.
"Of course we would have wanted to go through in normal time and save some of the boys' energy but that wasn't possible.
"There was some very strange decisions made today from the referee, I must admit, I reckon that both of the penalties were a bit soft, so that rankles a bit.
"I'm happy that the lads kept their composure during the penalties though and we will now focus on resting up and preparing the lads for our game at the weekend".

Gers Paired With Sons

RANGERS will come up against Dumbarton in the Third Round of the Ramsdens Challenge Cup after this afternoons draw.
The match has been drawn as a home game for Ally's side so will be played at Ibrox on Saturday 7 September in an afternoon kick-off.
It will mean a return to Ibrox for former Rangers midfielder Ian Murray, who is now Player/Manager of the Scottish Championship side.
Murray made 43 appearances for the club between 2005 and 2007 after joining from Hibernian.
The Sons earned their place in the draw thanks to 3-2 and 4-2 wins against Clyde and Livingston respectively.
Rangers reached the third round through a 3-1 win against Morton and a 5-4 penalties victory against Raith Rovers.
Both sides last competitive encounter was in January 1994 in the Scottish Cup Third Round in a match that Rangers won 4-1 thanks to goals from Reserve Team Manager Gordon Durie, Mark Hateley, Trevor Steven and David Robertson.

Getting Back On Track

ALLY McCOIST is focused on getting his tired and depleted side ready to get their season back on track ahead of tomorrow's League One game against Forfar.
His side are still without a full starting line-up of players for this weekends clash, and, with it taking extra time and penalties to beat Raith Rovers in mid-week, the pool of available players will no doubt be short of 100%.
Lewis MacLeod has returned for selection from the Scotland U-19 squad but Chris Hegarty is still unavailable as he serves a suspension for his sending off against Brechin last week.
Andy Little also returns to the match squad after picking up a knock in last week's 1-1 draw at Brechin.
The gaffer is determined not to focus on that as he prepares his charges for the visit of Dick Campell's side.
He said: “We know what our current situation is and why, so we aren't going to go on about it.
“The mid-week game running longer than normal certainly didn't help us, but I'm confident that the boys still have enough left in the tank to have a good game tomorrow.
"Personally I think the game should have been finished in normal time or at the very least extra-time but the referee has swwn two claims that he deems enough to be penalties. He enforces the rules so although we didn't agree with the decisions, we cant change them and we are pleased that we still managed to progress.
“Dick is a very experienced manager and his side wil be under no illusions when they come to Ibrox, we just need to make sure that we stay focused, professional and play well enough to get a win and out our season back on-track.
"Our start to the season wasn't ideal. We wanted to win the game and start well and that was a frustrating point.
“We created enough chances to put the game to bed but we weren't good enough at finishing, something that I have been drilling into the boys this week during training.
“We are as prepared as we possibly can be, given the circumstances.
"Having Andy and Lewis back will give us a wee boost and hopefully give us enough to win the match and kick-on our season."

Rangers got their Scottish League One title challenge back on-track after they beat Forfar Athletic 3-0 at Ibrox
Ally McCoist's side dominated the early stages of the encounter and very nearly took the lead in the first ten minutes with chances from Lee McCulloch and Ian Black both screwing chances wide of goal.
Black had a second opportunity to open his account this season when he fired a free-kick towards goal but it was inches wide of the post.
Minutes later it was the home side again with a chance to take the lead but Brazilian Emilson Cribari's header was saved by Loons goalie Darren Hill.
It took until almost half time for the first goal of the game to come, when Rangers's versatile captain Lee McCulloch put his side ahead.
David Templeton brilliantly closed down and tackled former Rangers defender Marvin Andrews before laying on a ball for the unmarked McCulloch who fired his shot underneath Hill and Rangers in-front.
Two minutes later and the lead was doubled, a combination of work between Lee Wallace and David Templeton resulting in a floated cross into the box as that man McCulloch out-jumped his marker and his bullet header bulged the net.
Forfar had a rare chance to pull a goal back just before the interval, but striker Paul McManus' long range effort ended up harmlessly wide of the Rangers goal.
It wasn't long into the second half before goal number three came for Rangers, this time from Northern Ireland cap Andy Little.
A Lee Wallace corner into the box was mis-judged by Caoimhin Bonner as he missed the ball completely with his attempted headed clearance leaving the ball to fall at Little's feet inside the box and the striker to tuck away his 4th goal of the season.
Forfar's chances of staging any kind of come back were halted when midfielder Ross Campell saw red from Brian Colvin for a two-footed lunge on Ian Black in the 54th minute.
The Light Blues continued to carve open the Forfar defence, Ian Black having another chance on goal when he hit a hopeful long-range shot that didn't trouble the Forfar 'keeper.
As the game began to wind-down, David Templeton has a chance to add his name to the score sheet but the winger's speculative effort was well over the bar.
Forfar thought they had pulled a goal back in the dying minutes of the game when Paul McManus had the ball in the net but Colvin called play back and awarded Rangers a free-kick
Rangers Manager Ally McCoist:
"I'm happy with the performance.
"I couldn't ask for anything more from the boys today, they all played really well.
"Lee and Emilson's performances were brilliant today. Lee took his goals really well and Emilson was solid at the back.
"It's exactly what we needed after last week's set back. We just need to use this momentum and take it into the Kilmarnock game".

'The Goalie' Joins McCoist's Staff

RANGERS today have announced that Andy Goram has joined Ally McCoist's backroom team.
It is understood that the ex-Rangers and Scotland goalkeeper will oversee the development and training of the youth goalkeepers at the club.
'The Goalie' spent 8 years at the Light Blues between 1991 and 1998 making 184 appearances and has since been voted by the clubs fans as Rangers' Greatest Ever Keeper in a poll in 2001.
Andy, who was McCoist's team-mate during both their playing times at the club, also made 43 appearances for Scotland during a 23-year career.
He also had previous spells as a coach for Motherwell, Airdrieoneans, Clyde and Hamilton Accies.
Goram, 49, said: "You couldn't wipe the smile off my face if you tried.
"This is a club that means so much to me, and to be back here is surreal.
"I absolutely loved my time here as a player, and it feels right that I'm back here developing the younger lads and helping them understand what it means to play for this fantastic club."

An impressive performance from Rangers saw them run out 1-0 winners over Kilmarnock in their Scottish Communities League Cup Second Round clash.
The home side enjoyed near total domination over a sub-average Kilmarnock side in what many thought would be a close contest.
Rangers began the game on the front foot and Killie keeper Antonio Reguero had to make two saves in the opening minutes, both attempts coming from Andy Little.
It only took 12 minutes for Rangers to take the lead through a free-kick when Little was brought down on the edge of the box by 16-year old Kilmarnock defender Andy Hodge.
Ian Black stepped up and curled the ball delightfully round the defending wall and into the corner of the net.
McCoist's charges were denied a penalty in the 18th minute when Barrie McKay was brought down in the box by Roy McKeown but Bobby Madden waved the protests away.
The chances continued to come with Emilson Cribari and Barrie McKay having chances to increase the deficit but Reguero kept the visitors in the tie.
Fraser Aird was next in-line to have a pop at goal when he ran onto a Cribari pass but his shot was unlucky to fizz over the crossbar.
Kilmarnock finally managed to create themselves a chance to level the score when Jude Winchester's cross into the box was met by Roy Muirhead but Allan Smith blocked the header.
The game swung back in Rangers' favour and David Templeton had a headed chance from an Aird cross but Reguero again foiled to keep Kilmarnock in with a chance.
Mark O'hara was the only other Kilmarnock player to get pass marks from the game and he had a chance to equalize in the dying minutes but the defenders long shot went wide.
Rangers had another chance to finish the game in stoppage time when Barrie McKay found himself with a free-header from an Aird cross but Reguero matched the effort.
Allan Johnstone will be disappointed that only a few of his players turned up to today's game but Ally McCoist will be delighted with his teams performance today.

Well Clash For McCoist's Men

RANGERS have landed another tough draw in their quest to lift the League Cup after today's draw pitted Ally McCoist's men against Motherwell.
There is no doubt that, again, playing against Scottish Premiership opposition will be a mouth-watering prospect for the Rangers support.
The Light Blues have been drawn as the away team which that they will travel to Fir Park Stadium on Wednesday, 25 September.
This will be the Steelmen's first match in the competition this season, as Scottish Premiership clubs are seeded until the Third Round.
Rangers dispatched Dunfermline and Kilmarnock to book their place in the draw for the Third Round.
There is surely to be an added element of friendly rivalry to the fixture as Motherwell boss Stuart McCall spent 7-years at Rangers as a player, all of them playing alongside McCoist.

Ally Pleased With Momentum

ALLY McCOIST is in a confident mood as his charges look to take their existing momentum into tomorrow's League One fixture against Arbroath.
The Smokies have started the season equally as well as the Gers this season with 4 points out of a possible 6 in the league so far this season and both sides are level on goal-difference.
Striker Bobby Linn has been paramount to Arbroath's good start aiding his teams efforts with 2 goals so far.
Rangers will welcome Arbroath to Ibrox as favourites to make it 2 wins in 3 matches and try and create a gap at the top of the League Table.
But he’s wary of The Red Lichties, particularly when they’re form is identical to his sides at this point in the season.
McCoist said: “I've watched some recordings of their games so far this season and they have played well.
“I've had Willie Melville away on a wee scouting mission for us as well so I have taken his report into consideration when planning our preparation.
"They have the boy Linn on-form for them as well, so we might just need to keep an extra-close eye on him tomorrow.
“We have the home advantage, but I think that any team that we face this season will attempt to have a go and get a result against us.
"The lads might be feeling a little tired as they have just come through two really tough games, but did fantastic in them and put in a real shift.
"I'm not going to pretend that a few of them aren't feeling the strain but we simply don't have enough players at our disposal at the moment to give them much rest.
“I'm confident that we will be as ready as we can and it should be a real competitive match.
“We’ll be putting out as strong a team as possible to hopefully win the game but it’ll be tricky there.”

Rangers fans celebrated an emphatic 6-1 victory over Arbroath at Ibrox this afternoon, the highlight of the game was undoubtedly a superb hat-trick from Rangers' Lee McCulloch.
Arbroath started the match disasterously almost from the kick-off, when Lee Travis' slack pass was intercepted by Ian Black who layed on a delightful overhead through ball for McCulloch who muscled Ross Chisholm out of the way before blasting a shot off he underside of the bar and in.
Rangers could have had their lead doubled ten minutes later had it not been for referee Craig Thomson disallowing an Andy Little strike as the linesman had flagged the striker for being offside.
The barrage continued as Ally McCoist's side continued to rain shots down on the Smokies goal but both Ian Black and Lee McCulloch had two chances each that they weren't able to keep on target.
The second goal took until the last kick of the first half when that man McCulloch struck again after Andy Little put in some great work in out wide and managed to centre the ball for the big target-man who was left with an easy finish.
The second half began almost exactly as the first one had ended, this time with David Templeton getting the finish.
A perfectly weighted pass from Andy Little found the little winger and he forced a save from Scott Morrison but the keeper could only parry the ball which gave Templeton the chance to net from the rebound to make it 3-0.
There was almost an instant reply from the Red Lichties, when a poor Ross Perry headed clearance found it's way to Steven Milne who rifled a volley past Allan Smith to give the visitors some hope.
The attempted comeback was short-lived however, when Barrie McKay's deep cross found Andy Little at the back post and he made no mistake with a half-volley to restore Rangers' 3-goal advantage.
Chances came from both sides as the match entered the final 20 minutes of normal time, Steven Milne and David Templeton both missing chances to double their personal tally for the day.
The Gers hadn't showed any signs of letting up in the final minutes of the game, David Templeton having a chance to make amends from an earlier miss and made no mistake with his turn-and-shot from a Lee Wallace pass.
The rout was completed in stoppage time, when Black's out-swinging corner found Lee McCulloch who looped a lovely header across goal and into the opposite side of the net.
McCulloch's performance earned him a standing ovation from the home fans and they chanted his name as the teams made their way back to their dressing rooms.
Rangers boss Ally McCoist:
"I'm delighted with that performance. I thought the game might have been a bit closer than that, but I'm not going to complain.
"It's a superb win for us and the fans have deserved that because they have been amazing.
"Big Lee was absolutely fantastic today, he really lead the line for us and caused Arbroath a number of problems. In my day I'd have been pleased to score goals in the manner that he did today as well!
"Overall it's all positives that we can take from today's game. The momentum we are on at the moment is really pleasing and we will be looking to keep going in mid-week for the Stranraer game."

Rangers boss Ally McCoist has been named Scottish League 1 Manager of the Month for August after the Ibrox club made an unbeaten start to their season.
Rangers drew 1-1 at Brechin and won 3-0 against Forfar before notching up an 6-1 victory over Arbroath at Ibrox.
McCoist's men also beat Kilmarnock 1-0 at home last month to set up a Scottish Communities League Cup Third Round match against Mothrwell at Fir Park on Wednesday September 25.

Wallace voted League 1 Player of the Month

Rangers defender Lee Wallace has been named SPFL League 1 Player of the Month for August after his impressive start this season.
The 26-year-old joined Ally McCoist's side from Hearts in summer 2011 and has been in consistently good form at left-back.
Wallace helped the Gers stay unbeaten in their six league and cup matches last month and has chalked up two assists so far this season.
Lee will likely be focusing on continuing this level of performance throughout the season as he looks to force his way back into Gordon Strachan's Scotland squad.

New Signings In Contention

ALLY McCOIST will likely shuffle his pack this mid-week as he will now be able to select all 9 of the summer signings as the clubs transfer and registration embargo ends tomorrow.
He will head to Stair Park in Stranraer without the services of Sebastien Faure, Lee Wallace, Ross Perry, Ian Black, Lewis MacLeod, Barrie McKay and David Templeton.
All 7 players are suffering from a lack of fitness after a run of six competitive games in just four weeks.
However the Gers manager is free to select Cammy Bell, Steve Simonsen, Richard Foster, Bilel Mohsni, Jon Daly, Stevie Smith, Arnold Peralta, Nicky Law and Nicky Clark.
The manager said: “It's a wee bit bitter-sweet for us here.
“On the one hand it's fantastic to finally be able to use our new players and that will give us a boost.
“But they will be well short of match fitness.
“On the other it's frustrating that, as it happens, we now have a fair few of the other lads who won't make it cause they have done brilliant for us and deserve a rest.
"We played absolutely terrific at the weekend there and the key for us is to remain focused and continue that kind of form into tomorrow night's game.
"We go into each game as the favourites in this division but I'm reminding the lads that we can't be relaxed as every team we play and game we play will be as competitive as it would be in any other division".

Bell Brought Into Scots Squad

CAMMY Bell has been drafted into Gordon Strachan's Scotland Squad after former Rangers keeper Allan McGregor had to pull out of duty due to injury.
The national manager originally named a 24-man group for the World Cup qualifying match with Wales.
Scotland play Wales at the Liberty Stadium on Friday September 9 and Bell's call up comes on the back of Lewis Macleod's inclusion in the under-19 group.
Bell has so far made only one appearance for Scotland against Faroe Islands in November 2010.
His inclusion in Strachan's squad may make him a doubt for Ally McCoist's squad in the preceding match against Dumbarton, on September 7.

Goals from Andy LIttle, Nicky Clark and Jon Daly helped Rangers comfortably brush aside Stranraer and move two points top of League One.
Rangers dominated the match throughout and their defending was so good that the home side only managed to make one solitary chance at goal.
The visitors were a goal ahead early in the game when Little dribbled the ball past Frank McKeown and struck a sweet shot from a tight angle that left David Mitchell in the Stranraer goal with no chance.
Two minutes later the lead was doubled when a nice move from McCoist's men resulted in debutant Clark with an opportunity to score and last seasons Scottish Division Two top goalscorer applied a simple finish.
Mitchell was kept on his toes all evening and did well to keep out two more Rangers attempts from Andy Little on 29 minutes and Nicky Law in the 37th.
Another chance fell to Nicky Clark just before the half-time whistle but the strikers shot from a tight angle went narrowly wide of the post.
Stranraer had a chance to regroup at half-time but Rangers showed no signs of slowing down in the second half.
The misery was piled on for the Blues in the 68th minute when Dean Agnew was stretchered off with what looked like a potentially serious ankle injury.
Their luck went from bad to worse when referee David Somers awarded the Gers a penalty when Mark Docherty was deemed to have handled the ball in the box.
Summer signing Jon Daly stepped up for the chance to open his Rangers account and he did just that with a professionally taken penalty to make it 3-0.
Mitchell again had to make a save from Nicky Law when the former Motherwell man had a go from the left after jinking past Lloyd Kinnaird.
Stranraer's one chance of the match came in the 85th minute, winger Ryan Borris slicing a shot wide from just outside the 6-yard box which summed up his teams performance for the day.
Nicky Clark was afforded the final chance of the match after he dodged Frank McKeown's tackle and fired his shot at goal but it was straight at MItchell.
Rangers boss Ally McCoist:
"We got exactly what we deserved tonight. The lads were solid and played well.
"Stevie [Aitken - Stranraer Manager] has been very complimentary of us lately and we appreciate it. I feel for them today as they were putting the effort in but nothing was coming off for them. If they take that level of effort into their other fixtures then they will have a good season.
"A lot has been said lately about us being a bit too rough with our play but the referee's are paid to decide that and if they decide that we are particularly bad then they will act appropriately. I don't agree that we have been at all and the players have not paid much attention to the claims really so we will continue the way we are.
"I was made up for the new boys coming into the team. It wouldn't have been easy for them, as first games aren't, but they came through well and Clark and Daly played particularly well and got on the score sheet so that's another plus."

Rangers release Andrew Mitchell

Andrew MItchell made his Rangers debut away to Dundee United in 2012 but made just five more appearances.
Rangers have terminated the contract of defender Andrew Mitchell.
The 21-year-old made his only first team appearance this season as a substitute in the 1-1 draw with Brechin.
Mitchell has now been let go by the club after just six appearances just over a year after he made his first team debut.
"Andrew’s contract has been terminated and he goes with our best wishes," Rangers boss Ally McCoist told the club's official website.
"It’s a mutually agreeable situation as he wouldn't be getting much game time here and hopefully he progresses elsewhere."
Mitchell made his debut in a Scottish Premier League match at Dundee United in March 2012 but failed to make another appearance until April 2013.
He made five appearances last season as the Ibrox side won the Third Division.

Smith Added To Injury List

ALLY MCCOIST was given some further bad news this morning as Stevie Smith is the latest player set for a spell on the sidelines.
Smith, 28, will be out for at least twelve days after a scan on his wrist revealed a strain that was picked up in the weights room of the clubs gym at Murray Park.
Lee McCulloch was ruled out with the same injury earlier in the season and this latest blow could force the gaffer to review the weight-training program at the club.
McCoist said: "It's a bit of a shame for Stevie.
"During his first spell at the club he missed a considerable time out due to injury, but thankfully this one isn't anywhere near as bad.
"It's just a wee one and we hope to only have him out for the Airdrie game this weekend, we are pretty confident to have him back for the trip to Stenhousemuir after that.

Brownlie Joins Gers

RANGERS have today announced the appointment of John Brownlie as the clubs new Chief Scout.
The 61-year old previously had spells as manager of Cowdenbeath, East Stirling and Arbroath.
Brownlie originally made his name as a footballer, playing for Hibernian, Newcastle United, Middlesborough, Hartlepool United and Berwick Rangers.
During his professional career, he also earned 7 caps for the Scottish National team.
John will no doubt have his work cut-out for him in the coming weeks as Rangers' well-publicized transfer embargo has recently expired, allowing the club to sign players again.

Rangers release eight

RANGERS have terminated the contract of Kyle McAusland as well as seven other youth team players.
The 20-year-old failed to make a single first team appearance for the Light Blues since he joined in 2007.
McAusland spent last season on-loan to now League One rivals Ayr, making 25 appearances and scoring 3 goals.
Ally McCoist told the club’s website: “We had to free up some wages and unfortunately Kyle and some of the other young lads aren't likely to get much game time this season.
"Kyle is a good lad and he's still young. So there's a good chance that he will find a new club and continue his career from there. He did well in a loan spell at Ayr last season so I'm sure he will have a few offers."
The other players released are Dylan Dykes, Ryan Sinnamon, Craig Halkett, Ben Reilly, Steven Chatterton, Michael Mossie and Ryan WIlson.

Goals from Stevie Smith and Lee McCulloch were enough to secure the win for Rangers and send them into the draw for the Ramsdens Cup Semi-Final.
Ally McCoist's side could come up against either Cowdenbeath, Dundee or Dunfermline in the draw for the last 4.
The home side came close to opening the scoring in the 8th minute through Lee McCulloch when he caught Dumbarton winger Ben Greenhaugh in posses ion just outside the box but his shot was saved by Sons keeper Andrew McNeil.
Only three minutes later the Gers took the lead, this time it was Smith who had the opportunity with a volley from a great David Templeton cross that he fired beyond the keeper.
Rangers continued to create chances trough a spate of corners but they weren't able to create any clear goal scoring chances from them.
Some fantastic play from Dean Shiels who cut inside from the right-wing and got a shot off at goal but Andrew Neil produced a fine save.
Another chance came for McCoist's side from a corner that met Sebastien Faure in the box but the central defender's header zipped wide of the post.
Rangers will have been happy with the one-goal advantage and overall control over the game going into the break but Ian Murray would have been expecting more from his side in the second half.
However it was the Light Blues on the offense again early in the second half, Faure again getting on the end of a ball into the box, this time from Lee Wallace, this time his header was well over.
The lead was increased in the 58th minute, with captain Lee McCulloch nipping in at the front post to meet a Stevie Smith corner and his bullet header was never in danger of being saved.
Tewnty minutes from time Rangers added another goal to their total, effectively sending them through to the Semi-Finals of the Challenge Cup.
Euan Norris awarded a penalty for handball against Rangers youth product Steven Agnew and McCulloch stepped up to complete the scoring and surely earn himself the Man of the Match award.
Ally McCoist will ave been happy with his sides dominance and performance but Ian Murray will surely be disappointed that his side were nowhere near as competitive as they should have been.

Pars In The Ramsdens Cup

TODAY'S draw for the Ramsdens Cup Semi Finals saw Rangers paired with Dunfermline for a second time in cup competitions this season.
Both sides previously met in the Scottish League Cup First Round earlier this season with the Light Blues progressing with a 3-2 win thanks to goals from Ross Perry and Andy Little.
The Fife side have been drawn as the home side so the tie will be played at East End Park on Saturday October 12.
Neither side have won the competition yet, Dunfermline coming closest when they finished runners up in 2007.
Ally McCoist's side will now play the Pars at least six times this season, the other four fixtures coming from SPFL League 1 matches.
Jim Jeffries' Dunfermline side defeated Alloa, Queen's Park and Queen of the South to book their place in the last four of the competition.
Rangers eliminated Morton, Raith Rovers and Dumbarton on their road to the Semi Final.

Smith Added To Injury List

ALLY MCCOIST was given some further bad news this morning as Stevie Smith is the latest player set for a spell on the sidelines.
Smith, 28, will be out for at least twelve days after a scan on his wrist revealed a strain that was picked up in the weights room of the clubs gym at Murray Park.
Lee McCulloch was ruled out with the same injury earlier in the season and this latest blow could force the gaffer to review the weight-training program at the club.
McCoist said: "It's a bit of a shame for Stevie.
"During his first spell at the club he missed a considerable time out due to injury, but thankfully this one isn't anywhere near as bad.
"It's just a wee one and we hope to only have him out for the Airdrie game this weekend, we are pretty confident to have him back for the trip to Stenhousemuir after that.
