Manchester United are reportedly preparing a £70 million transfer bid for Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo who won three Barclays Premier League titles during his six year spell at Old Trafford before moving to Spanish giants Real Madrid in 2009 for £80 million which is still the worlds largest transfer fee.

The 27 year old scored 84 times in 196 Barclays Premier League appearances whilst at Old Trafford and became a fan favourite as he matured into one of the worlds best players under the guidance of Sir Alex Ferguson.

The Portugal captain moved to Old Trafford in 2003 from Sporting Lisbon in a deal worth £12 million.

If United are to complete the deal for Ronaldo his £200,000 a week wages may prove a stumbling block after parting company with £70 million, although sources close to the player say the 27 year old would be willing to take a pay cut if he was to make a sensational return to Old Trafford after three successful seasons at the Bernabéu.

Ronaldo has netted on 112 occasions in just 101 La Liga outings since his move from United back in 2009 and was a pivotal part of José Mourinho's title winning side last season as he scored 46 goals as he played in all 38 of Madrid's La Liga fixtures.

After 26 years at Old Trafford long serving Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is contemplating retiring ahead of the new Barclays Premier League season according to a source close to the Ferguson family.

The Scot has won 36 trophies in his time at Old Trafford which includes 12 Barclays Premier League titles, five FA Cups, four Capital One Cups, nine Community Shields and the UEFA Champions League twice, the first coming against Bayern Munich in 1999 at the Nou Camp and the second against Barclays Premier League rivals Chelsea in 2008 at the Luzhniki Stadium.

Should the 70 year old retire he would leave Old Trafford as the most successful manager in the history of British football.

The North Stand at Old Trafford was officially renamed the Sir Alex Ferguson Stand last November to celebrate the Scots 25 years as Manchester United manager. So far there has been no comment from anybody at Old Trafford.

If the Red Devils boss did resign current Real Madrid boss José Mourinho would be the favourite to take over at Old Trafford, although the former Chelsea manager still has four years remaining on his deal at the Bernabéu.

Other potential successors to Sir Alex Ferguson are Carlo Ancelotti, David Moyes, Fabio Capello and Josep Guardiola, the latter pair currently unemployed, although Guardiola has spoken about taking a year away from management following his successful time at Barcelona meaning the 41 year old may not be a realistic candidate for the United job.

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has brought an end to his glittering managerial career as he announced his immediate retirement from management at a press conference earlier this afternoon.

After failing to secure the Barclays Premier League title on the final day of last season Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has retired with immediate effect. The 70 year old Scot said he thought it was the right decision to walk away with immediate effect and allow someone new with a fresh approach to take over at Old Trafford.

"Last season took a lot out of me physically and mentally, especially with the way the final day of the season transpired, I think I aged about five years on the day and at my age you can't handle that regularly. Personally I feel it's the right time to allow someone with a fresh approach to come in and lead this fantastic squad to many more trophies," said Ferguson.

The Scot won 36 trophies in his time at Old Trafford which included 12 Barclays Premier League titles, five FA Cups, four Capital One Cups, nine Community Shields and the UEFA Champions League twice, the first coming against Bayern Munich in 1999 at the Nou Camp and the second against Barclays Premier League rivals Chelsea in 2008 at the Luzhniki Stadium.

The 70 year old retires as the most successful manager in the history of British football. The North Stand at Old Trafford was officially renamed the Sir Alex Ferguson Stand last November to celebrate the Scots 25 years as Manchester United manager.

In regards to retiring as the most successful manager in the history of British football the Scot spoke proudly of his achievements, the 70 year old thanking his family, players and staff at Old Trafford who he says made his job a lot easier.

"When I joined this club I knew I could be successful, but I never thought I'd be this successful and it's a proud moment to look back on things now that I know it's coming to an end. There has been many ups and downs, there really has, but it's been a fantastic journey and there isn't much I'd change, it was truly fantastic," said the retiring Manchester United manager.

"I'd like to thank my family who have endured a lot, especially my wife Cathy. I'd also like to thank my friends, the players I've had the pleasure of managing and the backroom staff who helped me in doing that, both past and present made a huge impact, they all made things a lot easier and without them I wouldn't have won as many trophies," added Ferguson.

When asked if his successor had been chosen Ferguson remained tight lipped.

"I'm not the one to ask about that, I don't appoint new managers or take part in any process related to that so I can't tell you if anybody has been chosen or approached already, but I'm sure the club will move quickly in relation to that," said the Scot.

Real Madrid boss José Mourinho is the early favourite to take over at Old Trafford following Ferguson's retirement, although the former Chelsea manager still has four years remaining on his deal at the Bernabéu. The likes of Carlo Ancelotti, David Moyes, Fabio Capello and Josep Guardiola have also been linked with the Old Trafford job, the latter pair currently unemployed, although Guardiola has spoken about taking a year away from management following his time at Barcelona.

Rio Ferdinand shocked by sudden retirement

Following the unexpected and sudden retirement of Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson defender Rio Ferdinand has spoken of the shock he felt when the most successful manager in the history of British football told his players that he'd be stepping aside after almost 26 years in charge at Old Trafford.

Rio Ferdinand has been at Old Trafford for ten years and only played under one manager whilst a Manchester United player.

In 270 Barclays Premier League appearances for the Red Devils the defender has only played under Sir Alex Ferguson, but come the opening day of the new season against current Premier League champions Manchester City that will change.

The former England captain said he was extremely shocked by the sudden news.

"When the manager walked into the room to tell us that he was retiring we had no idea what was about to happen and when he said the words I don't think anybody in the room actually took it serious for a few seconds, but eventually it sunk in, we realised he wasn't joking and everybody was shocked, especially senior players like myself," said Ferdinand.

"Nobody expected it and nobody was prepared for it to be honest. I'm sure everyone thought he'd carry on for at least another season after the way Manchester City won the league last year, that's certainly what every player at the club thought and we're all extremely shocked with the news he's retiring. In saying that I think it's important we look back at what he's achieved, it's unbelievable, it's never been done before and I'll safely say it'll never be done again, he's won so much and been at Old Trafford for so long, nobody will match his record or be as successful in my lifetime," added the 33 year old.

Ferdinand is entering the final year of a four year contract he signed back in 2009 and the defender is hoping that he can prove to United's next manager that he's worthy of a new contract in the new upcoming Barclays Premier League season, although the 33 year old accepts he'll play less as he manages his ageing body throughout a rigorous domestic and European schedule, whilst the emergence of young defenders Phil Jones and Chris Smalling could also restrict his playing time.

Manchester United chief executive David Gill has paid tribute to Sir Alex Ferguson after the Scot decided to retire from management with immediate effect after more than two decades of success at Old Trafford.

Following the retirement of Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson it seems there has been somebody new paying tribute to the 70 year old Scot almost every minute since he made the unexpected decision to retire with immediate effect.

Manchester United chief executive David Gill has become the latest to pay tribute to Ferguson, the Red Devils chief executive stating that he had no idea of the Scots decision prior to being informed on the same day as the players at Old Trafford.

"Today I'd like to pay tribute to retiring Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson who for more than two decades has worked tirelessly to ensure that Manchester United has succeeded on and off the pitch. Under the guidance of Sir Alex Ferguson the club have become one of the biggest clubs in British, European and World football," said the chief executive.

"Sir Alex Ferguson is the most successful manager in the history of British football and I'm extremely proud of my time working next to him at Manchester United. The club won't be making any comment at present in regard to the vacant managerial position at Old Trafford which exists following the sudden departure of Sir Alex Ferguson," added Gill.

Gill also revealed that he attempted to persuade Ferguson to stay on for another season but to no avail.

"I did try persuade Sir Alex and obviously it didn't work, he had made his mind up and I respect that, although it's obviously a huge loss for Manchester United and British football because he's the best manager the worlds ever seen," said Gill.

Real Madrid manager José Mourinho and Everton manager David Moyes are the favourites to be named as the new Manchester United manager within the next fortnight before the Red Devils kick off their pre-season schedule against Dundee.

Cristiano Ronaldo has heaped praise on retiring Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson and also refused to rule out a return to Old Trafford in the future although he's very happy at the Bernabéu.

Real Madrid and former Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo has praised former manager Sir Alex Ferguson following his immediate retirement from the game earlier this month. The 27 year old was arguably one of Ferguson's greatest signings, the Portuguese international maturing into one of the best players on the planet whilst at Old Trafford.

"Sir Alex made me the player I am today, he made me believe in myself from day one and he was like a second father to me. I owe him a lot, I can never repay what he's done for my football career and I'm extremely grateful," said Ronaldo.

"He's the best manager I've worked with and nobody has done what he's done in the game," added the 27 year old.

Ronaldo joined Madrid back in 2009 for a world record transfer fee of £80 million and has taken his game to an even greater level whilst at the Bernabéu, the winger scoring 112 times in just 101 La Liga outings, although if recent reports are to be believed he could be set for a sensational return to Old Trafford with the Red Devils preparing a £70 million bid.

When asked about any possible future transfer Ronaldo didn't give much away.

"I don't know what will happen in the future, nobody knows what the future will hold, maybe one day I will return to Old Trafford, it would be nice and everybody knows of my love for Manchester United. At this time though I'm contracted to Real Madrid and very happy at Real Madrid, all I'm focussed on is winning with Real Madrid," said the Portuguese star.

Ronaldo, who has been capped 96 times by Portugal, has three years remaining on his contract at the Bernabéu and according to reports earns a staggering £200,000 a week making him the second highest player in the world.

José Mourinho committed to Real Madrid project

Real Madrid manager José Mourinho has publicly declared his commitment to the La Liga champions amid speculation that he would replace retiring Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford.

The leading favourite to take over as Manchester United manager following the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson has publicly distanced himself from the Old Trafford job. Real Madrid manager José Mourinho was the firm favourite to replace the 70 year old Scot given his previous success in the Barclays Premier League and UEFA Champions League, but today the 49 year old revealed he was happy managing in the Spanish capital and declared he wouldn't be leaving the Bernabéu for Old Trafford.

"I read the papers and see my name linked with the Manchester United job, which is very nice for me, but I'm happy in Madrid, my family likes Madrid and I won't leave Madrid, so for me these rumours must stop," said Mourinho.

Many expected that any deal that would see Mourinho leave the Bernabéu for Old Trafford would be complicated and difficult as the former FC Porto, Chelsea and Inter Milan manager has almost four years to run on his current contract.

Cristiano Ronaldo has been linked with a return to Old Trafford

Mourinho, who won two Barclays Premier League titles, the FA Cup, two Capital One Cups and the Community Shield in his time at Chelsea, also took the time to speak about star player Cristiano Ronaldo who has also been linked with a move to Old Trafford this summer, a deal reportedly worth £70 million not enough to convince the Madrid boss to sell.

"Cristiano is a fantastic player, the best in the world and it is only natural that the best player in the world plays at the best club in the world. For me no money can replace Cristiano, he's important for this club and we won't sell," said Mourinho.

"We all know that he had some fantastic years at Old Trafford and became a good player, but he has found a new level at Madrid and become a great player, one of the best footballers in history and together we can hopefully achieve many great things. So we won't sell, we don't sell players like Cristiano and there is no more to say about the issue, we simply won't sell for any amount, not for £70 million, £100 million, £200 million or even £400 million," added the Real Madrid boss.

Ronaldo joined Madrid back in 2009 for a world record transfer fee of £80 million and has scored 112 times in 101 La Liga appearances. The 27 year old has been capped 96 times by Portugal, has three years remaining on his contract at the Bernabéu and according to reports earns £200,000 a week making him the second highest player in the world.

Real Madrid begin the defence of their La Liga crown in August with an opening day clash against Valencia at the Bernabéu.

David Moyes is the new favourite to succeed retiring Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford following José Mourinho's statement yesterday in which he ruled out leaving Real Madrid.

Reports suggest the 49 year old Everton manager will be named the new Manchester United manager within the next week after Real Madrid manager José Mourinho publicly distanced himself from the Old Trafford vacancy yesterday afternoon.

The news won't please Toffees fans who have come to love Moyes who has consistently kept the Merseyside club in the top half of the Barclays Premier League table and challenging for European football with limited funds. If reports are true and Moyes does join Manchester United it's expected that either Martin Jol or Roberto Martínez would be the preferred successor.

Everton chairman Bill Kenwright was unavailable for comment when contacted.

So far Manchester United chief executive David Gill has refused to comment on speculation regarding the managerial vacancy at Old Trafford following Ferguson's unexpected immediate retirement earlier this month, although sources from inside Old Trafford suggest the club want to appoint a manager with proven experience in the Barclays Premier League, leading many to believe that it's always been a two horse race between José Mourinho and David Moyes to succeed Sir Alex Ferguson.

Manchester United chief executive David Gill has revealed that the club have been in contact with a potential candidate to succeed Sir Alex Ferguson as manager at Old Trafford and an appointment could be near.

A potential successor to retiring Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson could be named within days after chief executive David Gill revealed that the club had been in discussions with a candidate.

"As a club we've had some discussions with potential candidates and have been impressed by the candidates," says Gill.

"However as you'd expect we've had to choose who we believe will be the best fit for Manchester United. We're currently speaking to a potential candidate and an appointment may occur soon," added the Manchester United chief executive.

When asked if David Moyes was the candidate the club were in discussions with the Manchester United chief executive remained tight lipped and refused to comment on the speculation linking the Everton manager with the Old Trafford vacancy.

"It would be unfair to Everton and also David Moyes to create speculation about this matter," said Gill.

"We won't be naming anybody we speak to in regards to the managerial vacancy at Old Trafford, that would only create unneeded speculation and scrutiny before any official appointment was even made," added Gill.

The Red Devils begin their pre-season preparations in 12 days time when they take on Scottish side Dundee.

Senior players will support new boss says Ryan Giggs

Manchester United winger Ryan Giggs says senior players at Old Trafford will offer support to whoever is appointed as the new manager following the unexpected retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson earlier this month.

Whoever replaces Sir Alex Ferguson as Manchester United manager can count on the senior players at Old Trafford for support says veteran winger Ryan Giggs. The 38 year old has made an astonishing 598 Barclays Premier League appearances scoring 106 times for United since making his debut against Everton back in 1991 before the Barclays Premier League even existed.

"The senior players are all excited waiting for the new manager to be chosen. I'm sure many people believe we have some inside scoop about proceedings, but we don't, we hear bits and pieces through the media, we've heard nothing about the new manager from the board and it's just a waiting game for us," revealed the former Welsh international.

"When the new manager is announced I'm sure the board will choose the right person. It's almost an impossible job to follow Sir Alex Ferguson and whilst we're disappointed he's retired we realise nobody can go on forever. Whoever comes in will have the full support of the players and the senior lads like myself can offer some support," added Giggs.

Giggs made his debut for Wales back in 1991 against West Germany and the 38 year old went on to score 12 goals for his country making a further 63 international appearances before announcing his international retirement in 2007.

Manchester United have confirmed on their official website the appointment of former Everton boss David Moyes as their new manager on a six year deal following the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson.

Manchester United have today appointed a new manager for the first time since the inception of the Barclays Premier League, former Preston North End and Everton boss David Moyes named as the successor to the retiring Sir Alex Ferguson, the 49 year old signing a six year deal which will keep him at Old Trafford until at least the summer of 2018.

The 49 year old spent more than a decade at Everton and consistently kept the Merseyside club in the top half of the Barclays Premier League table whilst challenging for European football with limited funds at his disposal.

It's expected Everton will approach either Fulham or Wigan Athletic in the coming days in relation to opening negotiations with Martin Jol or Roberto Martínez who are the early favourites to replace the outgoing Moyes at Goodison Park.

David Moyes is the new Manchester United manager

Moyes will take charge of his first training session as the new United manager on Monday morning at the clubs state of the art Carrington training complex. Reports suggest the new United boss will also speak to current assistant manager Mike Phelan, coach René Meulensteen and goalkeeping coach Eric Steele about their futures on his first day in charge, some believing the Scot will look to make changes and bring in his own backroom staff from previous club Everton in the coming days.

The Scots first competitive and Barclays Premier League fixture as the new Manchester United boss could prove to be a baptism under fire as the Red Devils travel to the Etihad Stadium on the opening day of the season to face fierce rivals and current Barclays Premier League champions Manchester City.

United step up their pre-season preparations in just 10 days when they play Scottish side Dundee at Dens Park Stadium in their opening pre-season friendly. They'll also face St. Mirren and Ross County before hosting Portuguese side Benfica at Old Trafford. United will then finish their pre-season commitments with a friendly against Belgian side Royal Antwerp.

David Moyes has terminated the contracts of assistant manager Mike Phelan, coach René Meulensteen and goalkeeping coach Eric Steele following his first training session as the new Manchester United manager.

The Scot took charge of his first training session today since being named as the new Manchester United manager at the clubs state of the art Carrington training complex and the 49 year old has already rung the changes as assistant manager Mike Phelan, coach René Meulensteen and goalkeeping coach Eric Steele were all released from their contracts.

There had been rumours that Moyes would make changes so some of his backroom staff at Everton could join him at Old Trafford and it now appears likely that Steve Round, Jimmy Lumsden and Chris Woods will be approached by the Red Devils.

Goalkeeping coach Eric Steele has also left Old Trafford

Assistant manager Mike Phelan had been at the club since 2001, firstly as a coach before becoming Sir Alex Ferguson's assistant manager in 2008. The former England international had played under Ferguson making 102 league appearances.

Meulensteen, had two separate spells at Old Trafford, the Dutchman first joining back in 2001 before rejoining the club in 2007 after a short stint as manager at Danish club Brøndby IF. Goalkeeping coach Eric Steele joined the club back in 2008 and was heavily involved in the scouting of current shot stopper David De Gea following the retirement of Edwin van der Sar.

The Red Devils begin their pre-season schedule in eight days when they take on Scottish side Dundee at Dens Park Stadium.

Moyes will take charge in his first competitive fixture as the new Manchester United boss against fierce rivals and current Barclays Premier League champions Manchester City on the opening day of the season at the Etihad Stadium.

Manchester United manager David Moyes has as expected appointed former Everton colleagues Steve Round, Jimmy Lumsden and Chris Wood as his assistant manager, coach and goalkeeping coach respectively.

The trio have been appointed following the departures of Mike Phelan, René Meulensteen and Eric Steele. Many believed the new Manchester United manager would look to appoint his own backroom staff after he replaced the retiring Sir Alex Ferguson and that proved to be the case, the 49 year old Scot informing Phelan, Meulensteen and Steele that their services wouldn't be required any longer following his first training session on Monday.

Round had worked with Moyes as his assistant manager at Everton for four years and has signed a five year deal at Old Trafford. The 41 year old had previous spells coaching at Derby Country, Middlesbrough, England and Newcastle United before becoming the assistant manager at Goodison Park back in 2008. New coach Jimmy Lumsden had been at Goodison Park for over a decade and he has also signed a five year deal which will keep him at Old Trafford until 2017.

Moyes has appointed Chris Wood, not pictured above, as the new goalkeeping coach following the departure of Eric Steele, the current United States goalkeeping coach had been at Goodison Park before Moyes was even appointed. The 52 year old has also signed a five year deal. It's believed Manchester United have paid Everton between £450,000 and £625,000 in compensation following the trios departure from the Merseyside club who are reportedly pursuing Fulham manager Martin Jol.

United step up their pre-season preparations in just six days when they play Scottish side Dundee at Dens Park Stadium in their opening pre-season friendly. They'll also face St. Mirren and Ross County before hosting Portuguese side Benfica at Old Trafford. United will then finish their pre-season commitments with a friendly against Belgian side Royal Antwerp.

Moyes will take charge in his first competitive fixture as the new Manchester United boss against fierce rivals and current Barclays Premier League champions Manchester City on the opening day of the season at the Etihad Stadium.

Fulham have secured 20 year old Manchester United striker Federico Macheda on a season long loan with the intention of making the move permanent at the end of the season should the Italian impress.

Macheda, 20, burst onto the scene at Old Trafford back in 2009 when he scored a stunning winner against Aston Villa deep into injury time to send United back to the top of the Barclays Premier League table ahead of fierce rivals Liverpool.

The striker has endured a frustrating time since with unsuccessful loan spells at Sampdoria and Queens Park Rangers.

Fulham will have to pay £3 million if they choose to make the move permanent according to reports.

In other news Tom Thorpe and Sam Johnstone have left Old Trafford for Blackpool and Crewe Alexandra in permanent deals, the pair allowed to move on under new manager David Moyes. There have also been more loan moves for some of United's younger players as Larnell Cole, Davide Petrucci, Bébé and Ángelo Henríquez have all departed on season long loan deals.

Manchester United defender Patrice Evra wants to win more trophies and the Frenchman believes that new manager David Moyes can follow in the successful footsteps of former manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

David Moyes can continue the expected success at Old Trafford according to Manchester United defender Patrice Evra, the 31 year old confident he and his teammates can continue to win trophies despite the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson.

"The new manager has been fantastic since he's come in and all the boys are enjoying pre-season," said Evra.

"Personally I want to win as many trophies as I can before I retire and I feel I'll retire at Manchester United. It will be tough for the new manager replacing Sir Alex Ferguson, but anybody would struggle replacing the old boss. We know it'll be tough to win the league this season, it gets tougher and tougher every year because this is the best league in the world, but if we prepare well and perform at our best we'll have a very good chance," added the French international.

Evra joined Manchester United back in January 2006 when he left AS Monaco for £5.5 million and has won the Barclays Premier League four times since arriving at Old Trafford. The French international has made 206 Barclays Premier League appearances for the Red Devils scoring twice. The defender currently has two years remaining on his contract at Old Trafford.

The 31 year old has been capped 42 times by France since making his debut against Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2004.

United begin their pre-season preparations in two days when they play Scottish side Dundee at Dens Park Stadium in their opening pre-season friendly. They'll also face St. Mirren and Ross County before hosting Portuguese side Benfica at Old Trafford. Manchester United have begun life under new manager David Moyes in defeat after they lost 1-0 in their opening pre-season friendly against Scottish side Dundee this evening at Dens Park Stadium.

A first half strike from midfielder Ryan Conroy gave Dundee a famous victory over their much more illustrious opponents in their pre-season encounter at Dens Park Stadium tonight as new Manchester United manager David Moyes endured defeat.

The visitors will feel hard done by after they registered 20 shots during the game and the hosts only hit the target once, the effort from Conroy the only time Anders Lindegaard was troubled, the Danish international unable to keep out the effort.

Moyes chose to leave star strikers Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney on the bench as he started Javier Hernandez up front alongside Danny Welbeck. The former two did appear on the hour mark, although they couldn't rescue a draw for Moyes as he suffered defeat in his first outing since replacing Sir Alex Ferguson as manager at Old Trafford.

Following the game Moyes said he was aware this result could happen prior to the game and admitted his side had much improving to do before they meet fierce rivals and current Barclays Premier League champions Manchester City on the opening day of the new season next month at the Etihad Stadium.

"Obviously it's disappointing to lose and the performance wasn't the best in parts, but we all know pre-season is a building block for the season ahead and it was our first game tonight, we knew that could happen and whilst we're not happy about it we won't be placing to much importance on the result as these things can happen," said Moyes.

"We have to improve and we'll do just that over the next few weeks for the opening game against Manchester City. That'll be a very tough start for us, but we'll be up for it, don't you worry about that," added the new Manchester United boss.

United midfielder Tom Cleverley limped off on the hour mark and when asked Moyes said he was concerned about the injury.

"Tom felt his quad tonight and we're not sure how bad it's going to be. At the moment he's in a bit of pain so we're just going to have to wait and see how bad it is, hopefully it's a small strain and not a complete tear. A slight strain might mean a week or two out, which is obviously much better than a few months, so we've our fingers crossed it's nothing serious and he'll have scans tomorrow back in Manchester to see how much damage has been done," said Moyes.

United have four pre-season games remaining before their meeting with Manchester City on the opening day of the new Barclays Premier League season and will face St. Mirren, Ross County, Benfica and Royal Antwerp.

Injury not serious says a relieved Tom Cleverley

Manchester United midfielder Tom Cleverley will miss up to two weeks with a thigh injury picked up as the Red Devils lost 1-0 against Dundee in a pre-season friendly last night at the Dens Park Stadium.

The 22 year old limped off against Dundee on the hour mark and it was first feared he may miss the beginning of the Barclays Premier League season. However scans in Manchester today ruled out serious injury, the midfielder set to miss up to two weeks of action with a thigh strain and he'll miss pre-season friendlies against St. Mirren, Ross County and Benfica.

Cleverley revealed he was relieved following the outcome of the scans earlier today.

"To hear the news that it isn't a serious injury is fantastic and it makes you feel a lot better," said the midfielder.

"It's a bit disrupting to miss a few pre-season games and frustrating because I had a few injuries last season that stopped me from making more appearances, but honestly I'm relieved it's nothing serious and I'll only miss about two weeks which means I still have a chance of starting against Manchester City in our first league game," added the 22 year old.

The midfielder made 10 Barclays Premier League appearances for the Red Devils last season after successful loan spells at Leicester City, Watford and Wigan Athletic which saw him make 73 appearances in total scoring 17 times.

United only have four pre-season games remaining before their meeting with Manchester City on the opening day of the new Barclays Premier League season at the Etihad Stadium meaning Cleverley will only have the pre-season game against Royal Antwerp to prove himself fit and able to start in David Moyes first competitive fixture as Manchester United boss.

David Moyes the right choice says Robin van Persie

Manchester United striker Robin van Persie has backed new manager David Moyes as the right choice to replace the retiring Sir Alex Ferguson as the Red Devils continue their pre-season preparations.

The Dutch international who agreed to join Manchester United for £24 million whilst Sir Alex Ferguson was still in charge backed the boards decision to appoint the former Everton manager after Ferguson's unexpected retirement.

"Losing a manager like Sir Alex Ferguson would be tough for any club and it can take time for things to settle after a loss. The new manager has done well since coming in and you can tell during training sessions that he really knows what he's doing, every player is listening and improving, he's the right choice for the club," said the 28 year old.

United suffered a 1-0 defeat against Dundee in their first pre-season clash yet despite the setback van Persie remains confident the Red Devils will improve over the next few weeks in time for the opening day of the Barclays Premier League season when they take on fierce rivals and current Barclays Premier League champions Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.

"The result against Dundee wasn't what we wanted and we need to do better," said van Persie.

"In saying that we're aware that it's only pre-season, it was the first game for some players together and for some it was the first game in over a month so the result wasn't as important as things like fitness. Over the next few weeks we'll improve and I'm sure we'll be ready to face Manchester City on the opening day of the new season," added the Dutch international.

United take on St. Mirren tomorrow afternoon and it's expected van Persie will start for his new club for the first time since his controversial summer move from Arsenal. The 28 year old signed a four year deal when he left the Emirates Stadium and the striker is reportedly one of the highest earners at Old Trafford earning a whooping £180,000 a week before tax.

Manchester United comfortably beat St. Mirren in their pre-season friendly this afternoon as a brace from striker Danny Welbeck helped the Red Devils record a 4-1 victory over their Scottish opponents.

Goals from Danny Welbeck, Antonio Valencia and Javier Hernández gave new Manchester United manager David Moyes his first taste of victory since replacing Sir Alex Ferguson as they beat St. Mirren in their pre-season friendly this afternoon.

United went into the game on the back of a defeat in their opening pre-season clash against Dundee four days ago and there was a sense of importance surrounding this fixture before kick off despite it only being a pre-season friendly, a repeat of the result against Dundee at St. Mirren Park would heap further pressure on Moyes.

In fairness the game was never an even contest and once Welbeck scored his first, a fine headed finish from Rio Ferdinand's cross, the result was all but assured for the visitors even if a lapse in concentration presented St. Mirren's teenage striker Thomas Reilly with a chance just before the half time break, the sides level at the break following his calm finish.

Things didn't remain level for long following the half time break, a dangerous cross just six minutes into the second half from left back Alexander Büttner belted home by a determined Welbeck. Just two minutes later the game was put beyond the hosts reach as Valencia found space at the back post to tap home a deflected shot from Robin van Persie, the striker withdrawn after that incident, reports suggesting he picked up a hamstring strain and will miss United's next pre-season clash game.

Hernández added the fourth deep into stoppage time after Belgian teenager Adnan Januzaj caught the hosts defence flat footed with a lovely reverse pass, the Mexican international making no mistake as he confidently slotted the ball beyond the reach of St. Mirren goalkeeper Chris Smith to finish the rout on a night which saw Manchester United do a professional job.

Manchester United manager David Moyes can breathe a sigh of relief after striker Robin van Persie was only ruled out for two weeks after he picked up a hamstring injury against St. Mirren yesterday afternoon.

Robin van Persie will be fit to face Manchester City on the opening day of the Barclays Premier League season at the Etihad Stadium. That's a statement that will please Manchester United fans all around the world and allow new manager David Moyes to no doubt breathe a huge sigh of relief after the striker suffered a hamstring injury yesterday afternoon against St. Mirren.

The incident happened in the lead up to United's third goal, the Dutch strikers initial effort deflecting into the path of winger Antonio Valencia who tapped home into an empty net. Almost immediately van Persie signalled to the United bench that something was wrong as he clutched his left hamstring and the 28 year old was replaced by Ryan Giggs.

Scans today ruled out any serious damage to van Persie's hamstring and it's expected he'll only miss the clubs pre-season clashes with Ross County and Benfica, meaning he may feature against Royal Antwerp in United's final pre-season fixture before they kick off the new Barclays Premier League season with a blockbuster fixture against fierce rivals and current Barclays Premier League champions Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.

The Dutch striker joined United this summer, the 28 year old costing the Red Devils £24 million, van Persie publicly stating that he was leaving Arsenal in the pursuit of trophies, the Gunners failing to win any silverware since the 2005 FA Cup.

Premier League title our priority says Nemanja Vidić

Manchester United captain Nemanja Vidić says the Barclays Premier League title is the clubs priority this season after they suffered the heartbreak of losing their title on the final day of last season.

The United skipper admits that the club will be focussing on regaining the Barclays Premier League title this season after they dramatically failed to retain their title last season on the final day of the campaign as injury time goals from Edin Džeko and Sergio Agüero against Queens Park Rangers at the Etihad Stadium handed Manchester City the title on goal difference.

"The title this season is our main priority, that's the trophy we want and need to win the most, especially after what happened last season when we let our lead slip and paid for that on the final day of the season," said the defender.

"We still want to win every competition we enter, but the main trophy is the Premier League," added Vidić.

United coincidentally kick off the new Barclays Premier League season against City at the Etihad Stadium and Vidić believes a good start under new manager David Moyes could give them the momentum they need to go on and win the title.

"The first game of the season against Manchester City will be a good test and I think very tough. We hope to start well and it's important we get a good result in these big games. The momentum from a good start could help us in winning the league also and a good start with the new manager will make everyone confident that we can win the league," said Vidić.

Vidic, 30, has made 167 Barclays Premier League appearances scoring 14 times for the Red Devils since joining the club in 2006. The former Serbian international cost the club £7 million when he left Spartak Moscow, that fee proving a bargain as the no nonsense defender struck up a fantastic partnership with Rio Ferdinand at the heart of the United defence.

Manchester United recorded a 2-1 win over Ross County this evening in their latest pre-season fixture as second half goals from Ashley Young and Javier Hernández saw off the Scottish sides valiant challenge.

Another pre-season game and another win for Barclays Premier League giants Manchester United.

Second half strikes from Ashley Young and Javier Hernández ensured that the Red Devils finished their tour of Scotland on a winning note as they comfortably beat Ross County 2-1 at the Global Energy Stadium in Dingwall.

United boss David Moyes would have been pleased with his sides commanding performance, although he'll be hoping they begin to show a more clinical edge in front of goal as they move close to their opening day Barclays Premier League fixture against arch rivals and current champions Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.

The new United boss has just two pre-season games remaining to prepare his side for that opening day clash with City at the Etihad Stadium, the first against Portuguese side Benfica in just three days at Old Trafford. The Red Devils then finish their pre-season preparations a week later with a trip to Belgium to face Royal Antwerp.

Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick believes new Manchester United manager David Moyes has the right attributes and the necessary managerial experience to succeed for years to come at Old Trafford.

Michael Carrick has backed new Manchester United manager David Moyes to succeed as the long term replacement following Sir Alex Ferguson's replacement. The 31 year old believes Moyes has the right attributes to be successful at Old Trafford and thinks the time the new United boss spent at Everton gives him the necessary experience needed to succeed.

"There is no doubt in my mind that the new manager can succeed at the club. He's the right man for the job and so far he's impressed every player at the club in training since taking over from Sir Alex. He knows what he's doing, he's confident and he knows what he wants in every session, that instills confidence in the players," says Carrick.

"At the highest level the little things make a huge difference and the new manager prepares for everything. Nothing is left to chance and that is fantastic for the players, we all know what's expected and what our jobs are," added the midfielder.

http://i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x328/caoimhin89/We%20Want%20Our%20Trophy%20Back/MichaelCarrick_zps0017c700.png

Carrick has been at Old Trafford for six years after Manchester United paid Tottenham Hotspur £14 million in 2006.

The 31 year old has made 180 Barclays Premier League appearances for United scoring 14 times and has become an integral part of the squad winning four Barclays Premier League titles in that time along with the 2008 UEFA Champions League.

Carrick has been capped 22 times by England and is yet to score for the Three Lions.

The midfielder has featured in all three of United's pre-season games under new Manchester United manager David Moyes and is expected to start against Benfica tomorrow afternoon at Old Trafford. The Red Devils kick off the new Barclays Premier League season against bitter rivals and current champions Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium in 15 days.

Manchester United captain Nemanja Vidić says the entire squad at Old Trafford is delighted following their impressive 5-0 demolition of Portuguese side Benfica in their latest pre-season fixture and the former Serbian international believes everybody will be ready to go on the opening day of the Barclays Premier League season when they meet bitter rivals Manchester City in the Manchester derby at the Etihad Stadium.

There wasn't any points at stake at Old Trafford this afternoon and the result to many wouldn't have mattered, but to new Manchester United manager David Moyes only a win would have been acceptable in his first outing at Old Trafford since replacing the legendary Sir Alex Ferguson who unexpectedly retired over a month ago.

As expected the new United boss named a strong side to face their Portuguese opponents and the game was over as a contest within the first 20 minutes as the Red Devils raced into a 4-0 lead as young striker Danny Welbeck netted an impressive hat-trick as he staked a claim to start ahead of Robin van Persie, Wayne Rooney and Javier Hernández.

Goals from United captain Nemanja Vidić and Anderson rounded made it 5-0, the former delighted following the win.

"The win tonight was fantastic and we deserved it because our performance was great," said the 30 year old.

"It was important to start well as Benfica are a good side and we took every chance we got in the opening half hour. The manager was delighted at half time and our confidence is now very good, we're very happy," added the defender.

When asked about Welbeck's hat-trick the Serbian defender was full of praise for the England international.

"Danny took his goals very well and he's so talented you just expect him to score goals. I would be surprised if he doesn't play a bigger role for us this season and he could start against Manchester City after his hat-trick tonight," said Vidić.

United wrap up their pre-season next week when they travel to Belgium to face Royal Antwerp. The Red Devils will then finalise their preparations for the Manchester Derby on the opening day of the new Barclays Premier League season at the Etihad Stadium as David Moyes make his competitive bow as the new United boss in what could be a fiery encounter.
