Armageddon?

According to Greek myth, a princess of Troy by the name of Cassandra was the object of the god Apollo’s amorous attention. As an immortal Olympian, Apollo did not have to rely on a box of Milk Tray and a bunch of flowers to impress the princess.

He gave her the gift of prophecy.

Unfortunately, Cassandra wasn’t of a mind to give in to Apollo’s advances and turned him down. No Olympian god could take back a gift once given, so the disgruntled deity instead spoiled the gift by ensuring that no one would ever believe Cassandra’s prophecies.

Many years later, the people of Troy awoke one sunny morning to find that the Greeks who had been besieging their city for a decade had gone, leaving only a huge wooden horse behind.

The Trojans decided to bring the gargantuan horse into the city, despite it being too tall to fit under the gates.

As they prepared to dismantle the arch of the city gates to accommodate the horse, Cassandra warned of the doom that awaited them if it was brought into the city. No one believed Cassandra when she said that a large force of hoplites was hidden inside the horse, and without even bothering to check, the gates were brought down and the horse brought inside.

The rest as they say, is Homer, but if only they’d listened to Cassandra, Troy may well have prevailed over the flowing-haired Achaeans.

The Cassandras of Scottish soccer were loud and forceful this summer, as Rangers FC slid into oblivion.

SPL Chief Executive Neil Doncaster warned of an approaching Armageddon, while his SFA counterpart Stewart Regan claimed a, “slow lingering death,” was in store for Scottish soccer if the new Rangers were not parachuted into the SPL, or at the very least, allowed into Division 1 to ensure their swift rise to the top division.

In the event, like the original Cassandra, Doncaster and Regan were not believed, neither by the fans nor chairmen of the other 41 Scottish clubs who voted the new Rangers into Division 3.

So how is the Scottish Premier League shaping up as the leaves begin to fall?

We were warned that attendances would fall, there would be no new TV deal and that interest would collapse in an uncompetitive competition as Celtic secured the title by the end of November.

Actually, there are signs that Scottish soccer will be just fine.

With the first round of fixtures just about done, Celtic sits on top by just two points with Hibernian having played a game fewer.

With the Glasgow club having already lost two matches this season, there is no guarantee they will stretch that lead when the game in hand is played.

With Aberdeen and Saint Johnstone also at 18 points and Inverness Caledonian Thistle and Kilmarnock just behind at 15 points, only five points separate the top six.

This time last season, Rangers had 32 points and were nine ahead of second place Motherwell, and 19 ahead of sixth place Saint Mirren.

The league is much more competitive this season than it was last season.

How about attendances then?

While overall attendances have fallen due Rangers and Celtic’s averages dropping by about 5,000, most teams’ averages have actually risen.

Aberdeen’s average attendance has risen by over 1,000, while Hibernian’s has risen by about 500. Neither club has so far hosted Celtic, while Aberdeen have not yet hosted Dundee United, traditionally one of their highest-attended home games of the season.

Although Heart of Midlothian has seen a slight drop—by about 1,000—they have yet to play either Celtic or city rivals Hibernian at home. They should see that average rise significantly by the time the second round of fixtures is completed.

Dundee United’s average attendance has risen by almost 1,500, while Saint Mirren, Saint Johnstone and Inverness Caledonian Thistle have seen more moderate increases.

Fears over a TV deal have also proven to be groundless, with BskyB recently signing a new five-year deal with the SPL for the right to broadcast 30 live matches per season until 2017.

On the European stage, apart from Celtic, Scottish clubs have again failed to reach the group stages of either the Champions League or the Europa League.

Hearts though did give a good account of themselves in their matches with Liverpool, and after taking a late lead at Anfield to level the tie, a more streetwise team would have taken it to extra time rather than chase a winner in the final seconds and get caught on the breakaway.

We were warned that, with Rangers gone, Celtic would suffer in Europe due to a lack of competition in the SPL.

So far though, Celtic are doing just nicely, sitting in second place in their group after recording their first ever away win in the group stages against Spartak Moscow and coming within 30 seconds of a draw in the Camp Nou against Barcelona.

SPL teams still face tough financial circumstances and the standards are still below those of comparable European leagues, but there are encouraging signs.

The league is more competitive, attendances have risen at most clubs, TV funding has been secured for another five years and exciting young players are emerging throughout the division.

Like Cassandra, the SPL’s prophets of doom went unheeded this summer, but unlike Cassandra, they may just have been wrong.

So, the other night at work I opened a box with a label on it that said, "Do not display until the 26th". All that was inside were some books that are due out for release on that day. I didn't take anything out of the boxes, just merely looked inside. I had a member of staff with me who witnessed this, and I was plainly on camera too.

The next night I'm called into the office to do a fact-finding investigation and am asked a series of questions about why I opened the box and stuff. They obviously had already looked at the cameras and seen that I had opened it. I answered honestly and told them I was merely curious as to the contents.

And now one of the managers wants to see me tonight to discuss the issue.

All of this for opening a fucking box.

Tbf you were being a nosy cunt and it will likely state such things in your contract.

I had an interview today here's hoping I get the job.

Dunno if anyone posted this...

MEDINAH, Ill. -- For those who think this Ryder Cup is finished, think again. Team Europe can still win if the following five things happen Sunday:

-- Keegan Bradley is abducted.

-- Team USA captain Davis Love III inserts Cup spectators Michael Jordan, President George W. Bush, Amy Mickelson and the Rev. Jesse Jackson into the singles lineup.

-- Lee Westwood: U.S. citizen.

-- Marty McFly shows Team Europe captain Jose Maria Olazabal how to go back in time. Last Friday morning will do.

-- Team Europe wins eight of the remaining 12 matches to retain the cup.

Never mind. It's over. Olazabal can click off the walkie-talkie and take the IFB out of his ear. Time for the Europeans to fire up the private jets and head back home to Florida.

I wish it were different -- I really do. But overcome a 10-6 deficit? Win eight of 12 singles matches?

"It's been done in the past," said Ian Poulter, the only European with a winning record (3-0) this week. "It's going to be done again. That's all we can ask."

It has been done in the past. Once.

It happened in 1999, when American captain Ben Crenshaw wagged his finger at the media and said, "I've got a good feeling about tomorrow. That's all I'm gonna say."

That Sunday, the USA scored 8½ points and won 14½-13½.

"You know," said Sergio Garcia, who was playing in his first Ryder Cup that year, "it would be nice to kind of give it back the way they did it to us in '99."

If you're Garcia, it would be nice. But like Crenshaw, I've got a feeling too.

I've got a feeling Team Europe is doomed. I've got a feeling that Tiger Woods isn't going to go 0-for-Medinah. I've got a feeling that the eight veterans in that USA team room are reminding the four rookies it's time to step on a few throats.

"It puts us in a nice spot," said Steve Stricker, who is 0-3 with Woods this week.

Stricker was being polite. Team USA has the kind of two-day lead that Cup captains pray for. It is as close to insurmountable as trying to climb Mt. Everest wearing a T-shirt, cargo shorts and flip-flops.

"If you would have told me we'd have a 4-point lead going into Sunday, I'd take it," said Stricker.

You think?

Team USA needs to win 4½ points. That's not a gimme putt, but it's almost within the circle of friendship.

Meanwhile, Team Europe has to play near flawless golf. And it has to do it with four guys who haven't won a match (Martin Kaymer, Peter Hanson, Francesco Molinari, Paul Lawrie), two of whom didn't play at all on Saturday (Hanson and Kaymer).

Yes, I picked the Europeans to win. I'm also the guy who picked Samsung over Apple, the Wicked Witch of the West over Dorothy and Savannah State over Florida State. I miscalculated.

For instance, I thought Westwood was the No. 4-ranked player in the world. Silly me. Here at Medinah Country Club, Westwood, one of my faves, has played like he was issued plastic clubs.

He lost one match Friday, another one Saturday morning and then was asked by Olazabal to go to the mall and not come back until he found a left-handed ax. Meanwhile, Team Europe played the afternoon four-ball matches.

Team Europe didn't give up. Those guys never give up, especially Poulter.

He won his morning foursomes match with Justin Rose and then teamed with Rory McIlroy to win the afternoon four-ball match. Each time Saturday, Poulter's pairing overcame a USA lead.

"Match play, I love the fight of it," said Poulter. "You get to stare your opponent straight in the face and sometimes that's what you need to do."

If Mrs. Poulter had had quintuplets and they all played golf, then Team Europe might have won this thing. But there's only one Poulter and he can win only once on Sunday -- that is, if he beats Webb Simpson in the second match.

The Europeans have to do too much with too little. They won't phone it in. That's why Olazabal front-loaded his Sunday lineup with Team Europe's heavy hitters (Luke Donald, Poulter, McIlroy, Justin Rose).

But eventually you get to Lawrie (0-2) and, in something of a surprise, Graeme McDowell (1-2) and later, Hanson, Westwood, Kaymer and Molinari.

"Individually, I wouldn't want to play anybody on our side," said a confident Love.

"Massive task, but there's a chance," said a hopeful Rose.

"Yeah, of course, there's a chance," said McIlroy.

A chance, nothing more. A minuscule, "Do-you-believe-in-miracles?" chance.

If it happens -- if Team Europe leaves with the cup for the seventh time in the past nine competitions -- then you'll hear a roar all the way from Spain, Northern Ireland, England, Scotland, Germany, Sweden, Italy and Belgium. Fathers will name their newborns Ian. Olazabal won't have to take a flight back; he can float there.

Love and Team USA would like a rout. Olazabal and Team Europe would like drama. They'd like to see sweat stains on the Americans' golf shirts.

"This has given us a heartbeat," said Poulter of a tiny European surge in the Saturday dusk that cut the USA lead to those 4 points.

Heartbeats count for something. But a 10-6 advantage for Team USA counts for more. More than the Europeans can make up.

I'm sure there will plenty more said by them after this also.

Former Sun editor Kelvin MacKenzie has instructed solicitors to demand an "apology and recompense" from South Yorkshire Police over the newspaper's discredited reporting of the Hillsborough disaster.

Mr MacKenzie, writing in tomorrow's Spectator magazine, said he suffered "personal vilification for decades" as a result of the Sun's famous front-page story which ran four days after the tragedy in April 1989.

The article, headlined "The Truth", included claims that Liverpool fans urinated on police officers resuscitating the dying and stole from the dead.

According to extracts published today on the Spectator's website, Mr MacKenzie writes: "Now I know - you know, we all know - that the fans were right.

"But it took 23 years, two inquiries, one inquest and research into 400,000 documents, many of which were kept secret under the 30-year no-publication rule, to discover there was a vast cover-up by South Yorkshire Police about the disaster.

"Where does that leave me?"

The Sun's report caused widespread revulsion in Liverpool and led to an almost-total boycott of the paper on Merseyside that exists to this day.

The former editor said in the Spectator article that police patrols have been increased around his house and describes "physical danger" he faces in Liverpool.

"But the people who have got away scot-free are South Yorkshire Police," he wrote, adding that he is seeking recompense for "the lies their officers told".

On September 12 a damning report by the Hillsborough Independent Panel said a cover-up took place to shift the blame on to the victims and 41 of the 96 lives lost could have been saved.

The panel found 164 police statements were altered, 116 of them to remove or change "unfavourable" comments about the policing of the match and the unfolding disaster.

The following day both Mr MacKenzie and current Sun editor Dominic Mohan apologised for the newspaper's role.

There is so much things that can define average attendances if a teams average automatically drops it doesn't necessarily mean it will be down to the Rangers playing in Div 3, I can see Aberdeen's dropping yet again but that is because we are so shit.

The domestic attendance is likely to drop for them considering last year they didn't play at home in any of the cups, im sure the poor attendance at last nights game will be more than made up by three 60000 sell outs at Porkheid.

League attendance is only down 5000.
