Just a quick question. The AFC Champions League doesn't start till late-January/early-February, and the Final (if any of us get that far) is played over 2 legs in October/November.

This means that if we were to reach the latter stages of the AFC Champions League in our final season (2015-16), then those games would be after the 1st July 2016 cut-off mentioned in the original post. So we could be playing our 2016 AFC Champions League Final games just as the 4th season starts. Will it be possible to allow us to earn the points from any AFC CL success even if it goes past the July 2016 cut-off?

Great season mate! great, loving the 8-4 win

Yeah, they started off with 3 players at the back and it just was not working for them as we scored 5 goals from 5 shots on goal in the first 35 minutes. They then put 4 at the back and scored 2 goals themselves before half-time. Second-half they came out with 3 at the back again and were obviously going all out attack to try and get back into it. Again, we scored another 3 quick goals and they followed up with 2 late goals. Crazy.

Season 1

Absolutely smashed the league, scoring goals for fun, pretty much exclusively between the front 3 of Harry Kewell, Jason Hoffman & Mate Dugandzic. Harry Kewell was completely the focus of my attacking tactical setup, and it shows as he scored 21 goals & had 22 assists in 27 games. We won the Series Finals as well with relative ease, again with Kewell bagging 4 goals in the 2 games. Overall a completely dominant season without having to do too much tinkering, got the tactics sorted in the first few games and never had to change them all season. Hopefully the second season goes as sucesfully as this one, but I somehow doubt that, what with Kewell getting a year older and the bloody wage cap meaning I will have to re-jig the squad around.

I've got just two regular season games left, completely bossed out the first season tonight! Will try finish it early tomorrow morning!

How many goals did Harry Kewell get for you in the league? I'm 5 games in now and he already has 7 goals. His average rating is 8.90!

EDIT:

So, erm, is anyone else getting really high scoring games? Almost every game I play is ending up like 4-2 or 5-1. Not a bad thing mind, as I am winning them all*!

*Almost all of them

Wow Shedender, fantastic work, even if you did get lucky, you also need a whole lot of skill to pull off a Champions League win without being one of the top, top sides.

Just a quick note that after finishing the 3rd season, I got offered the Barcelona job after Gerardo Martino was sacked after they finished 7th (!) in the league the previous season.

First of all, Shedender great work by winning the Champions League. I'm following this topic since the start and I'm trying to finish a season before next sunday.

I think this is my first post on this forum, I used to came here for tips and tricks for my own careers.
I'm not a real pro like you guys here, but i want to give it a try.

(Sorry for my bad english, I'm from the Netherlands and I didn't had great grades at school for English haha )

It's not about doing fantastic and winning everything, it's about having fun and a little competition with everyone. I am far from what I would consider 'a pro' at FM, and I have averaged around 300 hrs on each game since FM07 and Championship Manager years ago.

Also, your English is great!

A good final season (in terms of this challenge), with some great wins over Porto & Sporting. Nearly went unbeaten in the league aside from a minor slip-up v Braga where we conceded 2 late goals. A bit disappointing to miss out on the Taca de Portugal again, a poor 1-0 defeat to Gil Vicente. Managed to win the League Cup this season again, despite last year's loss in the final. We made hard work of it though, we were 3-0 up after 25 minutes and somehow allowed them to get back in the game and bring it back to 3-3, but Lazar Markovic scored a sublime sudden-death penalty to win the cup. The Champions League was again ended a bit prematurely, but we gave it a good go! A thrilling 4-4 draw at home meant we pretty much had to win in Dortmund as away-goals was now extremely unfavourable towards us. We played well in the 2nd leg and went ahead early on, but despite me going a bit defensive 2nd half (maybe too defensive), Dortmund nicked a goal in the 76th minute which meant we were going out on away goals. We had a few late chances but it wasn't to be.

All-in-all a great 3 season haul of three League titles, two League cups, a Taca de Portugal and two Supertaca wins.

Sorry for double-post, the Edit button wasn't working...

Second Season Slip-Ups!

Nowhere near as good as the first season. A poor start to the season, but eventually managed to go through a good 10-match win streak for a bit of breathing space at the top. A minor blip towards the end but ultimately just did enough. Very poor in the Taca de Portugal, and a disappointing Final loss to Porto in the League Cup. Did better in Europe this time, and very nearly took Spurs to extra-time, however fell short to a late goal. Spurs got romped 9-1 on aggregate in the next round by Dortmund, so a bit of justice there.

Seven points clear in the 2nd season now with seven to play. I have no idea how, but we lost the first champions league 1st KO leg away v Spurs 3-0. We hit the post about 40 times it seems. Definitely think we can beat them at home, just going to have to play all-out-attack to even try and pull it back.
Also into the League Cup Final v Porto as well.

EDIT: Oh we were so unlucky. Were beating Spurs 3-0 in the 88th minute when their defender scores a ridiculous header from the edge of the box and we win 3-1, but go out 4-3 on agg. Gutted!

Just a quick mid-2nd-season League Table. Seem to be getting slightly lucky with both Porto & Sporting seemingly both being somewhat mediocre, but it's still wide open at this point. Been in good form the last few games, scoring 20 goals in the last 5 games. Braga had been top all season until the recent 4-0 win over Olhanense. Obviously most teams still all have an extra game on me, but you get the idea.

Through to the 1st Knockout Round in the Champion's League, drawn against Spurs. I can take 'em!

Had a really difficult start to my 2nd season. Lost 3 games in the first 7 or so games, each time was super unlucky and we dominated each game. Got pasted 3-0 in one of the cups as well (we did not dominate that one )

In good news, I just need a draw or better against Juve at home (I drew 1-1 away) to progress to past the group stages.

Photoshop to compact them together a bit. I play FM on a large monitor so the image would be over 2000 pixels wide otherwise. As for trimming them down without the extra info, I just crop them using imgur's tools.

Good start here BOT Brad. Bar has been set.

Cheers. If there is any info you want to see that I forgot to screenshot let me know.

As for signings, I only made 2, Sofiane Feghouli from Valencia for about £12M, and Eric Mathoho from Kaizer Chiefs for £800k.
Nicolás Gaitán and Óscar Cardozo scored pretty much like 70% of my goals, with the 2 centre-halves Luisao and Garay chipping in with a few from corners.

Will hopefully start the 2nd season tomorrow night, hoping for a bit more success in Europe this time!

As for my formations, I pretty much rotated with a 4-1-2-2-1 and 4-2-3-1 throughout the season. Played the 4-2-3-1 at home and against the weaker teams, and stuck with the 4-1-2-2-1 away and against the tougher teams.

Long time FM player, first time giving one of these challenges a go. Drew the first 2 games against both Olhanense (1-1) and Rio Ave (2-2). But still tinkering with tactics and trying to strike a good balance with the players at hand.

Been drawn in Group E of the CL with Milan, Basel & Copenhagen. Not bad, but not great.

Wow, group A has Chelsea, Lyon, Juventus & Napoli. Insane.

The best tactic is the one that most suits your players, not the one you want to your players to play and this applies to any tactic :-) One thing you are right: sometimes the problem is not with tactic, it is with the players. But maybe, just maybe, you are giving space between your defenders and your midfielders. Check the run from deep of your midfielders and your defensive line :-)

I am pretty sure it was something to do with the way the original tactic was setup (Just a default one) and after another season I managed to concede a lot less goals.

2019-20 Dortmund 28W 3D 3L - 87 Points - 118 Goals, 36 Conceded, +82 GD
2020-21 Dortmund 24W 8D 2L - 80 Points - 84 Goals, 25 Conceded, +59 GD

As you can see, although I played slightly less 'offensively' throughout the season, and we scored a lot less goals, and we got less points, we also lost 1 less game, and both of these losses were totally unlucky and we dominated both games (2-1 @ Kaiserslautern & 2-1 @ Augsburg). Plus, we had already won the league by the time we played these games, and I was experimenting with our youth players somewhat.

I think with a bit more tinkering and sorting out defensive problems - my players still make stupid mistakes quite frequently - I can manage to put together an unbeaten season within the next few seasons.

EDIT: Just some other points.

1 - The First Division seemed a bit tougher the second season, and some teams strengthened quite well and instead of it just being a 2-horse race in 2019-20 (Dortmund & Munich), the 2020-21 season saw 4 teams all near the top and all finish quite close

1st - Dortmund - 80 Points
2nd - Leverkusen - 75 Points
3rd - Munich - 74 Points
4th - Hannover - 69 Points

2 - I have noticed my team have been hitting the bar/post so much its untrue. I actually have been keeping count in the 2021-22 season, and from 7 games so far, we have hit the bar an amazing 11 times! We have currently won 5, drawn 1 and lost 1.

Well, first of all if you have a record of 6 wins, 1 draw and 1 loss it does not seem you are winning randomly. It is a normal / good record for any team. Second, FM is no longer about winning all games by 3, 4 or 5 goals, it just does not happen. Third, you should have a tactic that is suitable for your players and not to adapt your players to the tactic you want. A good or the best tactic is the one that adapts better to your players. Finally, if you think you can improve your performance, watch the matches in full mode and observe what your players are doing wrong.

Thanks for your advice. I finished the season with 28 wins, 3 draws and 3 losses which I am really pleased with. I definitely think improving my team-talks helped a lot, although my team is still quite vulernable defensively, we often score a lot of goals and most games seem to finish 4-2 or 3-1 or something similar. However I am starting to think this is just because my defensive players simply arent good enough, as my coaches say even my 'best' defender would only be a 'good' First Division player.

Also, I have tried some new tactics and found the 4-5-1 'V' suits my team quite well, and I used that throughout the Champions League and managed to get to the final, where I was promptly thrashed 4-1 by Man United!
