10 in 36 including 5 in 8 as a forward and 11 substitute appearances.

vs

14 in 39 all as a forward and with only 6 substitute appearances

Had Moyes not bizarrely dropped his most in form player at the back end of December just to have his big names in the side Welbeck would have comfortably outscored Lambert last season.

He's also probably been England's best player over about 2 seasons
, playing from the left, but everyone has such a bizarre hard on with hating on him.

What?

Am I the only one who is sick off all the build up to the world cup now? Just like Christmas the hype has been dragging on for so bloody long I'm sick of hearing about it now and just want to get on with it.

Don't mind personally, once every four years, love it all, a tournament so big deserves a big build up.

Just hope it's a better tournament than 2010. Didn't realise at the time but it was a pretty poor WC.

I reckon there's a pretty decent chance Welbeck has been England's best player over the past 2 seasons.

Possibly Hart/Jagielka/Cahill have been better.

Name better in the past 2 years.

I read today that he's the second highest scorer under Hodgson, and seeing as we've all decided that the number 1 (Rooney) is shite, then that just strengthens his case.

Edit: Just to make it clear, I'm talking about performances in an England shirt only.

Welbeck has the habit of playing shit for England and then popping up with a goal. Normally against a minnow.

And on that Rooney comment, he was statistically the worst player in the 2010 WC (all teams, not just England) and hasn't played well at a tournament for 10 years. He's done what he usually does so far, score well in the qualification stage. It's logical to think that he'll then do what he's been doing for years, and that's flop at the tournament. He also looked woeful in the warm up friendlies (slightly better in the last one though).

Didn't FIFA actually release statistics at the end of the tournament that confirmed he was England's best player?

Possibly, but football isn't played with statistics. It's played with a football.

4 of Welbecks 5 competitive england goals have came against Moldova and San Marino.

He's a good work horse but nothing else. Sterling/Lallana/Barkley all offer more going forward.

No.

Don't think he was the tournaments worst player as I said earlier though. He was certainly shockingly bad at that tournament.

I honestly have no idea why people keep saying this, he's incredibly technically proficient.

Not enough to play on the wing in anything other than a workhorse winger type player.

Lallana/Sterling/Barkley are all way ahead of him in terms of dribbling and beating players.

All his premier league goals last season were against bottom half sides I think.

It's only really Man Utd fans that rate him highly in terms of technical ability, most people agree he's a good player based on his work rate and willingness to track back though.

Yeah, because we watch him the most. So are more aware to the blindingly obvious fact that once you get past the fact that he has occasional bambi on ice moments and looks a bit ungainly what you actually get left is a very talented footballer.

I just don't understand what he brings to the table that Barkley and Sterling don't?

Both of those players have the same goal threat or thereabouts.

Welbeck is rated about right in England now, after the huge hype for him has died down. He's a 5/10 footballer, 7/10 on a good day. His statistic's don't exactly set the world on fire, either.

Wait, where did I argue against that first line?

I honestly think he's just a far better player than most people on here, and in the general public, give him credit for. Bringing it down to a level of 'he works hard' or 'he tracks back' just ignores the fact that he's got a lot more to him than that.

As for his stats, he's basically had one season as a guaranteed starter as a striker and he did pretty well. It was a case of bad luck on his part that a world class player in RVP happened to become available after that and he didn't get a chance to press on.

Was that the season he scored 9 in 30? With the service you get at Man Utd a top level player should be scoring way more than that.

His best attributes are his work rate and his tracking back though, so it's only right people praise him for that. He's not known for his passing, excellent touch or dribbling ability - because he hasn't shown enough of it. His record of 29 in 139 for Man Utd is just not good enough. It's completely bang average.

Well 12 in 39, it was a decent start. I remember the stats flying around showing how favourably it compared with the likes of Shearer and Henry at similar ages and what could be termed a debut season.

The season before last was an aberration, he played quite well in parts, but he just didn't get himself into goal scoring positions and when he did he tended to fuck it up, but since then he's been a hell of a lot better. For a left winger, which is pretty much exclusively where he's managed to get games (and I think its even too far to call his position a 'winger' under Moyes) he doesn't really have bad stats. They're certainly comparable with Sturridge's Chelsea stats, sadly (from a United point of view) I think it might be a similar story with Welbeck that he'll have to move to really get a chance playing consistently up front, but I'm convinced he'll prove a success of himself wherever that chance comes.

Edit: And a great chunk of those appearances are substitute ones too. I'd also question what service our strikers have got in the past 2 years.
