Portsmouth sign experienced pair Wade Elliott and Martyn Lancaster

Portsmouth have added experience to their squad with the signings of Wade Elliott and Martyn Lancaster following their releases by Birmingham City and North American side Atlanta Silverbacks respectively.

Elliott, 34, began his career at Southampton and has since spent time with Bashley, Bournemouth and Burnley.

He has joined Portsmouth on an 18-month contract.

Meanwhile, Lancaster, 33 hasn't played football in England since he left Skrill North side Ashton United in 2005, has also joined on an 18-month deal.

"I'm very happy to be here and back playing football in my home country. I just want to start playing some games now," Elliot told the club website.

"I've been without a club since the summer so for a while now I've been looking for the right opportunity for me to get back into the game.

"When I heard that Pompey were interested it was an easy decision to make."

Both players could make their débuts in Saturday's FA Cup clash with Crewe Alexandra at Fratton Park.

Portsmouth celebrated Joe Jordan's first game in charge with a comprehensive victory over Crewe Alexandra whose FA Cup hopes were ended.

Andy Barcham gave Pompey the lead with a powerful half-volley back across goal from Ryan Taylor's cross.

Taylor then doubled their lead after getting across his marker to find the corner of the net from close range.

Crewe had been pre-match favourites for the FA Cup clash but a re-invigorated Portsmouth were too strong for the League One side and will be included in Sunday's draw for the Third Round

Portsmouth manager Joe Jordan told BBC Radio Solent:

"For my first game, it couldn't have gone any better. We knew their strengths and weaknesses, we knew that they would come at us and on turnover we could get back at them quick and our two goals came from that.

"It was fantastic preparation for the game and it's great when it pays off because the fans needed that today. It was a euphoric day and that's just put the icing on the cake.

"I think we all wish that today was the start of the season - unfortunately it isn't. We know there's a lot of hard work to do and we're prepared."

Blues' Cup journey continues

Pompey have been drawn away to Championship side Doncaster in the Third round of the FA Cup with Budweiser.

The tie will be played at Keepmoat Stadium on Saturday January 4 2014.

It is the second time that the Blues have been drawn away in cup competitions this season.

Pompey have not faced Doncaster since March 2013 in League One, drawing 1-1 at the Keepmoat on that occasion.

This will be the first meeting between the sides in this competition.

Pompey exited the FA Cup at the first hurdle last season, losing 2-0 at home to Notts County.

Liverpool exited the competition last season in the Second Round, losing 3-1 to Oldham at the Kessam Stadium.

Midfielder is boss' third signing

César Lolohea arrived at Fratton Park on an initial 18-month contract after being released by French Ligue 2 side Laval.

The 24-year-old midfielder has 15 caps for New Caledonia, scoring 5 goals for his National side.

Blues boss Joe Jordan said: “He’s a very fit lad with plenty of technical ability, who will get around the pitch and gives us a different option.

“He has been fantastic to deal with and we’re pleased to be able to bring him in.”

The New Caledonian came through the ranks at AS Mont-Dore in his homeland and also played for AS Magenta before joining the Les Tango for the 2011/12 campaign.

He agreed to terminate his contract after failing to make any first-team appearances for the French side.

Hi folks,

My AMAZING laptop has developed this great problem to let itself overheat and power off from time to time. So this happened right after the FA Cup draw and I hadn't saved it since before the Crewe match.

So I will re-play that match and edit the report and will also edit the report for the FA Cup 3rd round draw, if I draw or win against Crewe of course!).

Boss knows Wembley is close

The Johnstone’s Paint Trophy is one of two cup competitions that Pompey are still involved in.

They exited the Capital One Cup at home to Charlton in August, while Saturday’s win against Crewe extended the run in the FA Cup.

But Joe Jordan insists that Wednesday’s tie against Bristol Rovers has not gained or lost any significance because of those previous results.

Pompey head to south-west England looking to book their spot in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy final.

And Jordan knows that victory would mean a place in March’s Wembley final is sealed.

The Blues boss said: “The game remains just as important to us as it did last week.

“After we finished preparing for Crewe we turned our attentions to Bristol Rovers late last week and, as always, the intention is to go there and get a result.

“Bristol are a good side who like to get forward and will try to create dangerous situations by getting crosses into our box.

“That is nothing less than I would expect from a John Ward side.

“He has put together an extremely competitive side and maybe they haven't had the results or a wee run that they would have liked so far this season. Tuesday will be another battle for us.

“Rovers aren't having the best of times last season but they have made it into the semi-finals of this competition, so we can't underestimate them.

“We certainly have more belief that we can go there and win after the weekend match, but our players will have to show the same level of desire.

“At this stage of the competition all four of the clubs left in will think they have a realistic chance of getting to Wembley and we are no different.”

Pompey are 4/1 to beat Newport with Sky Bet and if you open an account and deposit before the end of November, the club receives £10.

Opportunistic Andy Barcham and Wes Fogden strikes either side of the break helped seal Portsmouth's place in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy Final at Wembley.

Barcham latched onto a Steve Mildenhall save from a Ryan Taylor header to put the visitors ahead.

Barcham cancelled out his own opener when he mis-timed a headed pass-back to goalkeeper Trevor Carson that ended up in the back of his own net.

Fogden then pounced on another Mildenhall to stab in from close-range and restore the visitor's lead.

Portsmouth manager Joe Jordan told BBC Radio Solent:

"It's great for the supporters and especially for the players. We keep working them and asking them to do certain things and they've stuck to their task.

"It would have been two 2-0 wins and two clean sheets on the bounce if it hadn't been for one little mistake today.

"We saw the game out and I couldn't ask for anything more from the lads. We now have the Final at Wembley to look forward to but we have league games to focus on before then."

Bristol Rovers manager John Ward told BBC Radio Bristol:

"We've got a little bit too excited. A few of our young boys especially, in terms of them trying to win the game at 1-1 instead of getting the shape back in.

"We took a quick free-kick when our centre forward was lay on the floor so it's that sort of thing.

"But I don't think my team could try any harder or work any harder. We just didn't play well enough on the day."

Diarra: Pompey can return to glory

Lassana Diarra: Spent 11 months at the Blues
_____________________________________________________________________________________

Lassana Diarra believes Portsmouth can make a return to the Premier League within five years.

Diarra spent 11 months at Fratton Park in 2008 under Harry Redknapp and was part of the side who won the 2008 FA Cup.

The midfielder revealed in a recent interview with skysports.com that he is sympathetic towards his former clubs plight and his belief that they can return to the highest league in English football within the coming years.

"It saddens me to see the club where they currently are.

"Although I only spent a brief time of my career there, it was long enough for me to see how special the fans are and how much the club means to them.

"They have a massive fan base and they will support them all the way back to the Premier League, which they can hopefully achieve within the next five or so years.

The former French International also spoke about new Pompey manager Joe Jordan, who he worked with when he was a coach with the club.

"I know Joe well from my time working with him under Harry [Redknapp].

"He has lots of experience of the game and he is a rather strict man and that could help the club.

"I could see the potential in him then to become a really good manager and I hope that he can realise that potential with Portsmouth.

The 28-year old also remarked about the possibility of him ever pulling on a Portsmouth shirt again.

"Will I ever play there again? It is hard to say. In football you never say never because you don't know where you will be two, three, four years down the line.

"Maybe if the club make it back into the Premier League and I am still playing and available at the time it will be an option, but who knows?"

Andy Barcham's early goal from a rebound gave Portsmouth a narrow win over Newport County.

The in-form winger reacted quickest to guide Ricky Holmes' saved shot into the net for his third goal in as many games.

Newport, managed by former Pompey player Justin Edinburgh, were the better side after the break, but Lee Minshull's header was cleared off the line by Martyn Lancaster.

Robbie Willmott and Sam Magri both missed good chances for Newport before Ricky Holmes hit the post for Portsmouth.

The home side were left with a nervy end as Dan Butler was shown a second yellow card on 84 minutes.

The win meant Portsmouth have won their last two League Two fixtures and have moved up to 13th in the League.

"It's one of those victories that wasn't the easiest to watch but you'll take it.

"I don't think there were many players who actually could say we had a great game on the ball, but we worked hard, we defended well and we've ultimately won the game.

"They made it tough for us, they were lively, they were doing everything apart from scoring.

"We got the win and that is the most important thing, and it's rounded off a fantastic first week for me here."

Winger out for a month

It has been a season of frustration for Andy Barcham.

The club struggling to meet pre-season expectations.

But the latest has been more of a concern – a knee problem picked up in the League Two win over Newport that will see him sidelined for around a month.

It couldn't have come at a worse time for the 26-year old with him just hitting form over the past weeks, scoring three goals in his last three matches.

Barcham said: “It's frustrating. Definitely.

“I've been delighted with my form over the past few weeks. I trained all week and didn’t have any problems.

“I went up for a header and landed awkwardly on my knee and right away it didn't feel right.

“It’s frustrating for me because I want to play every game and help the club push further up the league.

“Right now it's looking like I won't be ready to come back until the Mansfield game in the middle of January.

"There's never a great time to pick up an injury but with the new boss just in I really wanted a run of games to show him what I can do.

“It's not ideal but I'll just do what I can and listen to the medical staff and hope that I can be back in the side before then."

Portsmouth claimed a crucial win in their League Two campaign at a Bristol Rovers side who surrendered a one-goal lead.

The visitors went behind when Chris Beardsley made space for himself in the box to convert a Marcos Navas cross.

Joe Jordan's half-time team talk seemed to have fired up his side when Ryan Taylor evened the score 11 minutes into the second half when he got himself on the end of Simon Ferry's through ball.

Ricky Holmes' intelligent run to beat Rovers offside trap put him through on goal and the winger's cool finish put his side in-front and give them their second league win in-a-row.

Portsmouth manager Joe Jordan told BBC Radio Solent:

"I actually enjoyed it. I think the lads' attitude, their spirit, their togetherness was fantastic and that was just what was needed.

"The result was all that mattered today. How we got there didn't matter, we didn't start the game well at all but we ground out the win.

"We got a spirit, we got a reaction and we got the three points.

"If I've got a criticism of us today it was probably that we didn't switch on at all until the second half.

"The confidence hadn't been great for obvious reasons and hopefully now that will improve with our recent run of results which has been excellent."

Portsmouth gave their fans the perfect Christmas present this afternoon, comfortably defeating Dagenham & Redbridge 3-0 at Fratton Park.

Ryan Taylor gave Pompey the lead with a chipped finish over the keeper after Wes Fogden's neat pass.

Wade Elliott doubled their lead, volleying home an over-hit Taylor cross.

Lawson D'Ath missed a chance to pull a goal back for Dagenham before Ricky Holmes made it 3-0 with a superb shot that curled in off the post in the second half.

Portsmouth manager Joe Jordan told BBC Radio Solent:

"It's a very pleasing result and a very good display again.

"What helps you win games is knowing that players can go forward attacking knowing that we're solid at the back so it's vitally important that you can get as many of those (clean sheets) in the season.

"We knew it was going to be more difficult to break them down second half but overall, very pleasing."

On Wade Elliot's goal: "It was a fantastic strike; it was a great timing of the run and it originally looked like a misplaced cross from Ryan (Taylor).

"But the finish was a touch of class and moments like that are exactly why we brought Wade in."

Striker wants back among the goals

Portsmouth striker David Connolly has been given the all clear by club physio Gary Fleming to return to full training.

The former Ireland International had been out of action for three weeks with a groin strain.

Today was his first full session since he picked up the injury but already the forward is desperate to get back in the first-team.

Connolly said: “Joe pulled me aside on Wednesday and said that if I got back into training for the beginning of next week he would consider putting me on the bench against Southend in midweek.

“I was delighted with that. I got a full session in today and didn't have any problems.

“I've been delighted with my form over the past few weeks. I trained all week and didn’t have any problems.

“I just want to be out there scoring goals and helping the team.

“That won't be easy and I get that. Ryan [Taylor] has been fantastic leading the line and he's in great form.

"But it can only be good for the team to have two fit in-form strikers.

"We are on a bit of a revival since Joe came in and I'm desperate to be a part of that again.

"I'll just apply myself in training for the build up to the midweek game and hope that I'm involved in some way."

“It's not ideal but I'll just do what I can and listen to the medical staff and hope that I can be back in the side before then."

Jed Wallace scored on his first start under Joe Jordan but Portsmouth could only secure a draw against Northampton Town in League Two.

The visitors could have opened the scoring early on as Antonio German curled a shot that was saved by Trevor Carson.

But Pompey took the lead twelve minutes into the game when Jed Wallace rifled in a loose ball after Simon Ferry was tackled in the Cobblers box.

Joe Devara and Ricky Holmes missed chances to double the lead for Pompey, but Gregor Robertson raced through and slotted home the equaliser.

Portsmouth manager Joe Jordan told BBC Radio Solent:

"I've got mixed feelings. I'm pleased we got another clean sheet but I'm angry that we out-played them for long periods and didn't win the match.

"Once the ball came on the floor in the first half, we had the better of the play.

"They camped out in their own half for the first half. I was disappointed because the decisions we made in the middle of the park weren't right.

"We had a plan to keep the possession and push for a second goal and it didn't work. But we played well again and we got a point at least so it wasn't all bad."

Midfielder to miss important games

Pompey have been rocked by the news that Simon Ferry will miss roughly 5 weeks.

The midfield maestro badly twisted his angle when turning away from a challenge during the clubs 1-1 League Two weekend draw with Northampton.

Ferry will also miss the FA Cup Third Round clash with Doncaster Rovers next weekend as well as the first leg of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy South Final against Swindon Town on Fabruary 5.

Ferry told portsmouthfc.co.uk: “I'm really disappointed..

“I realised at the time that something wasn't right but I told the gaffer that I felt OK to finish the game.

“If I'd come off it maybe wouldn't have been so bad but there is not much I can do about that now.

“Missing important games will annoy any player and I'm no different.

“Gary Fleming [club physio] is great at what he does. So I'll just do everything he tells me to and hope that it get's better before the original time scale..

“My position is one that we have plenty of players who can cover. Good player like Wes [Fogden], Romain [Padovani], Wade [Elliott], The new guy César [Lolohea] looks like a player and Jed [Wallace] can even fill in there.

"I'll be hoping I still have a place to come back to!"

Board Backing Jordan

Chairman says funds are available

Iain McInnes has confirmed Joe Jordan will be able to significantly restructure his squad in January.

The Pompey chairman has told the boss there is money available to bring in the players needed to continue to turn the club’s fortunes around, but insisted the investment was affordable, given the increased revenues the club has generated so far this season.

After a meeting between the chairman, manager and chief executive Mark Catlin, McInnes underlined the board’s determination to back their new manager in an exclusive interview with the official website.

He said: “As a board we took full account of our playing resources, specifically the inherited and ongoing injury count, as part of the managerial recruitment process.

“A priority for Joe and his staff has been to analyse resources in the full knowledge we had the January window to invest in our future and dispense with any threat of being dragged into a relegation battle, which would be simply unacceptable and irresponsible as a board should we allow it to happen.

“Fans have supported us in exceptional numbers this season and we are not only respectful of that commitment, but wish to recognise and maintain it.

“In the light of substantial cost savings, heightened commercial income and higher gate receipts than anticipated, we are able to repay that faith by supporting Joe in his player recruitment ambitions, which we are confident will match the expectations of you, the fans.

“However, fans can also be assured that the player salary budget we have set is affordable and in line with our financial projections. Joe has also agreed that there are some players who do not feature in his plans and they will be allowed to move on.

“We believe Joe, Steve [Kember] and the scouting team have already earmarked necessary players. There remains the challenge of actually signing them, but if all goes to plan, we anticipate a more successful second half of the season."

Transfer window: Portsmouth sign Abdoulaye Keita and Michael Bridges

Portsmouth have signed former Bordeaux goalkeeper Abdoulaye Keita and Newcastle United Jets attacking midfielder Michael Bridges.

Keita, 23, was born in France and has been capped by his homeland at under-17 & under-21 levels while Bridges, 35, has 3 under-21 caps for England and is making his return to the UK after four years in Australia.

"Abdoulaye is a fantastic, young keeper who will add some real quality to the team," said Pompey manager Joe Jordan.

"And I'm sure our fans will appreciate the experience that Michael will bring to our game."

Both players have been signed in-time to make their debut in tonight's League Two fixture with Southend United.

Portsmouth winger Ricky Holmes scored two goals for his side, who sent Southend United crashing to a second successive defeat.

Holmes' fired his first goal into the net just 7 minutes into the match when he was found in space by a Danny East cross.

But Pompey's lead was to be doubled nine minutes before half-time, with Southend defender Barry Corr penalised in his own box for a shove on César Lolohea and Holmes stepped up to coolly place the resulting penalty.

Freddy Eastwood grabbed what would only turn out to be a consolation goal for The Shrimpers after a deflected Brennan Dickenson shot fell into his path.

Portsmouth manager Joe Jordan told BBC Radio Solent:

"Defensively you look at us and you think we are almost as confident as we are going forward and that's something we are pleased about.

"We had two players in at 27 and 33 today so they are experienced enough to help out the young defenders. You're going to get times where players are high or low on confidence and at the moment it would seem like the lads are gaining that confidence back.

On the upcoming FA Cup fixture at Doncaster: "It's great to have one, you don't want to give it too much attention whilst you still have league games to play but we were professional today and we can now focus fully on trying to get as far as we can in the FA Cup."
