Portsmouth: Colace, Cywka & Liabeuf join

Portsmouth have signed former Barnsley midfielder Hugo Colace, former Auxerre midfielder Cedric Liabeuf and Barnsley winger Tomas Cywka on loan for he rest of the season.

Colace, 30, will provide competition with Conor Coady and Sebastien Svard in Defensive Midfield.

He has spent three seasons with Barnsley between 2008 and 2011, while Liabeuf, 34, has played more than 310 senior matches during his career.

Cywka, 25, joined Barnsley from Reading in August 2012.

"Hugo has more than 100 games of Football League experience under his belt," Portsmouth manager Joe Jordan told the club website.

"He has done well at his previous clubs since then, so I look forward to working with him.

"Cedric is an experienced player who can play in an attacking midfield role so he gives us that extra danger.

"Tomas is a player I've had my eye on for a while. He's a fast, tricky winger who creates chances for others and is able to get some goals too."

More Players Seek Pastures New

The Club have announced the immediate departures of first-team players Marcos Painter, César Lolohea and Jake Jervis as well as youth team players Ashley Harris and Liam Triggs.

The departures are the latest in a long list of ins and outs at the club as Joe Jordan continues to re-structure the squad for the second half of the season.

Full back Marcos Painter joined the club in the summer and made 9 first team appearances this season but was made aware that he would find first-team games hard to come by in the second part of the season and has agreed to leave the club.

César Lolohea is a recent arrival at the club, joining only in November but the New Caledonian was finding it difficult to adjust to life in England and requested to terminate his contract early in order to football closer to his homeland.

Forward Jake Jervis is departing the club for a second time in his career, having had a short loan spell in 2012 during which he made 3 senior appearances.

Youth players Harris and Triggs are not thought to be close to senior football and the youth team staff agree that the best move would be for the lads to continue their career's elsewhere.

The club would like to go on record to thank the players for their services and wish them the very best in the future.

Portsmouth dented Wycombe's hopes to distance themselves from the relegation places with an easy win at Adams Park that keeps them in the hunt for a play-off place in League Two.

The Blues went in front when Fran Yeste tucked in Fode Mansaré's headed pass from close range after 18 minutes.

Mansaré then doubled the lead just before the break from the penalty spot after being clattered by Josh Scowen in the Wycombe box.

Wes Fogden's volley made the points safe with 7 minutes of the match remaining.

Wycombe slipped down to twentieth in the table, but are still nine points clear of twenty-third-placed AFC Wimbledon, while Porstmouth remained tenth only two points behind Northampton in seventh-place in the race for the play-offs.

Portsmouth manager Joe Jordan told BBC Radio Solent:

"We wanted to get back on track after the previous game and we did that well today.

"We played the game we wanted to play and we looked really solid, which was important.

"We looked a good threat at the other end and to get three different players scoring is fantastic because it helps show that we have goals that can come from more than one player or area of the pitch."

Wycombe manager Ronnie Jepson told BBC Radio Solent:

"We keep giving teams starts in games and we gave Portsmouth a two-goal start. It was 65 minutes before we started playing.

"The conditions were horrendous and they played the conditions better than we did.

"Fran Yeste adds quality and his goal was first-class. He was maybe the difference between the two sides."

Transfer Deadline Day: Portsmouth announce 7 new signings

Portsmouth have signed 7 players, subject to Football League and FA approval.

Cheslea's Sam Hutchinson joins on-loan until the end of the season and Alan Dunne, Kevin Osei, Steven Elliot, Kamel Larbi, Oscar Ewolo and Sylvian Monsoreau have all agreed to join Joe Jordan's side.

The troubled club have had to build a new squad after successive relegations in the past two seasons and a first-half of this season that has fallen under the board and fans expectations.

So far this window the club have brought in a remarkable 24 new players, and have seen 22 players leave as the new manager Joe Jordan overhaul's the side in the hope that it will improve the League Two side's fortunes.

Jordan has been working hard throughout the winter to rebuild his squad, but has been frustrated in his attempts to find players that are available without paying excess in transfer fees or wages.

He confirmed to BBC Radio Solent on Thursday he intended to keep David Connolly as club captain, while Martyn Lancaster will continue as vice-captain.

"I can understand that the fans are worried about the volume of player coming in and out but when the player settle then we should see some improvements," Jordan said.

"But it's fantastic for us, many of these players are of a high calibre and will prove to be valuable signings when they adjust and get used to the way we want to play."

Portsmouth and Torquay shared a point in a goalless League Two draw.

Tomas Cywka wasted Pompey's best first-half chance after he lashed his shot badly wide of the far post.

Pompey keeper Abdoulaye Keita smothered Billy Bodin's effort while Cedric Liabeuf forced a fantastic save from Michael Poke from 20 yards.

Steven Elliott's close-range effort squirmed wide of the Torquay post, before Akwasi Asante's strike was deflected tantalisingly across goal for the visitors.

"We finished the game with four attacking players on the pitch so I don't think I could have done any more.

Boss wants players focus on JPT

Confidence is building at Fratton Park following the clubs recent steady climb of the League Two table and a place in the upcoming Johnstones Paint Trophy South Final.

But Joe Jordan insists that the job is not yet done.

Wins over Gillingham and Bristol Rovers in the Quarters and Semi Finals of the competition have set the Blues up for this weeks Final first-leg meeting with Swindon Town.

And Jordan wants to see more progress when his side welcome The Robins this Tuesday evening.

The Blues boss said: “I wanted them to enjoy the semi-final result – that was important because it was some achievement and some atmosphere.

“It was everything that we wanted and I couldn't have asked for anything more from the players or fans.

“But that’s the benchmark now – we set a standard at Gillingham and raised it against Bristol Rovers.

“Now we need to maintain that focus and the players know the intensity demanded of them by me and the fans.

“If they continue to do what they've done over those last two games then we won’t have a problem.”

Pompey will face a Swindon side sitting fifteenth in the Sky Bet League One.

Jordan said: “They’re a good side. They have drawn their last two league games nil-nil, but I’m sure they’ll be looking to bounce back.

“They are a hard-working side and will be the favourites for the match.

“I know their manager Mark Cooper and I’m sure it’s going to be a tough game.”

Jordan said: “I’m a positive person, but the club was down and out. So to get here is a fantastic achievement from everyone.

“Now we just need to use that united spirit to get us over the line on the pitch and win the trophy for the fans, they deserve it after all they have been through recently.

“It’s been a slow process – probably slower than anyone realised. We've got a long way to go to completely rebuild this football club, but right now we just have to focus on each game as it comes.”

Simon Ferry has returned to training following an injury, while Sam Hutchinson (ankle) will miss the match.

Conor Coady will also be unavailable for selection as he sits out his second of a three match suspension.

Pompey are 4/1 with Sky Bet to win on Tuesday. Open an account at

Portsmouth have one foot in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy National Final with a 3-1 Area Final first-leg win over Swindon Town at Fratton Park.

Fran Yeste scored his first goal in the competition early on when he rifled a 25-yard strike beyond Wesley Foderingham.

Steven Elliott caught a Tomas Cywka ball on-the-bounce to strike the second before Swindon's Lee Cox headed into his own net to almost put the game beyond doubt.

The visitors found it difficult to trouble the home side but did manage a consolation when Michael Smith out-jumped Simon Ferry from a corner to give his side an away goal to take into the second leg.

Portsmouth manager Joe Jordan told BBC Radio Solent:

"It was a hard-fought win, I thought we were brilliant. We started strong and that will have been helped by the fact that we were at home and had the backing of the fans.

"The first five minutes it looked a bit edgy - but soon after we got the first goal and the confidence grew from then.

"We showed some really good play today and the scoreline doesn't do Swindon any favours because I felt the game was closer than that suggests.

"It's given us a two-goal lead to take into the next leg and I now need to make sure that we stay grounded and professional in the return leg. "

A late equaliser from Jack Price rescued a point for Portsmouth against Exeter City.

The Grecians took the lead on the stroke of half-time when Karim Rossi volleyed in from six yards after Mark Gilhaney's knock-down.

Steven Elliott had a chance to square the game when Grecians goalkeeper Artur Krysiak had to make a diving save to tip his shot round the post.

With just under fifteen minutes left, Price's shot took a deflection to leave visiting keeper Krysiak stranded and level the scores.

"I can't fault the players, I thought the players' attitude was fantastic. I have to say I thought the throw-in that they scored from was our throw-in.

"It's tough to take. The positives are it's five games without a defeat in two competitions now - so we're becoming tougher to beat, but again it's another draw.

"I'm gutted really because I thought the players did everything we asked of them.

"It wasn't long ago that we lost four out of five matches. We've now lost two in eight, so it's certainly not a worry for me because we're heading in the right direction."

Youth Starlets Will Be Loaned To Pompey

Portsmouth and Manchester United have today confirmed a deal that will see Fratton Park become a place for Reds starlet to gain first-team experience .

"Manchester United have the best youth set-up in the country and having their talented youngsters boost our squad will be of great benefit to the team." club chief executive Mark Catlin told portsmouthfc.co.uk.

"We are sure this will be a fruitful partnership for both clubs, allowing a transfer of skills and knowledge and a sharing of ideas. Manchester United is one of the great names in football and we are very excited about teaming up with such a great institution.

"They have brought through numerous World class players over the years and the prospect that the next David Beckham or Paul Scholes could be spending a season or two at our club is very exciting indeed."

The head of Manchester United's youth academy, Brian McClair, was equally enthusiastic.

"Manchester United FC Academy is very excited at the prospect of working closely with Portsmouth and forging strong links," he said.

"Being able to offer our promising young players first team Football League games will be very beneficial to their development."

Manchester United have agreed to pay Portsmouth £80k per year as part of the deal.

Also included in the agreement is an Annual friendly between the two clubs at Fratton Park, the proceeds of which will be retained in full by Portsmouth.

Knight Questions Struggling Portsmouth
  • Club have suffered two successive relegations
  • Currently sitting outside the promotion play-off places in League Two

Alan Knight made 801 appearances for Portsmouth over a 22-year spell

Former Portsmouth goalkeeper Alan Knight has spoken out to The Guardian about the clubs recent plight and it's current state of affairs.

Knight, now 52, spent an incredible 22 years at the Hampshire club, amassing a remarkable total of 801 appearances for the first-team over that time.

Portsmouth have been relegated twice in the past two years, taking the club on a shocking downward spiral that has seen the 2008 FA Cup winners go from being a Barclay's Premier League side to a side who are struggling to remain in the Football League.

This season hasn't been much better for the Blues, sacking manager Guy Whittingham after just over a year in-charge, with the club struggling and sitting 13th in the League Two table.

The Arrival of Joe Jordan in November seems to have made a slightly positive affect on the club, seeing them rise to just being just out side the promotion play-off places on goal diference.

The state of affairs over recent years has caused distress and anger from many of the Pompey fans, but none more so than Alan Knight.

The clubs former goalkeeper - who has the second highest amount of appearances for the club (801) behind Jimmy Dickinson (828) - was speaking to The Guardian's Dominic Fifield and offered his feelings on their current plight.

“I spent 30 years at Portsmouth as a player and coach, so you can imagine how distressing it is for me to see the club in such a state,” he said, the anguish in his voice palpable.

“I didn’t make 801 appearances for Pompey in all four divisions just so parasites, driven by greed, could come along and unravel more than 100 years of history.

"Thankfully the fans were able to take control away from these charlatans and return it to the fans, the best hands it could be in.

“What had happened to them is a disgrace. I wish I had the vocabulary to express my anger, and the supporters’ anger, in stronger terms.

“When I left Portsmouth, I thought they had climbed the mountain - established Premier League club, heading for Europe, job done - but now it seems they have fallen all the way back down again.

“Don’t forget, I’m just an ex-player. It’s the poor old punters, the lifeblood of the club, who have had to suffer over the past few years.”

Knight is now the manager at League Two rivals Chesterfield, who are sitting 2nd in the league.

“There is a silver lining to this mess, it is the knowledge that Portsmouth Football Club are now owned by the Supporters Trust, so the people in charge really care about the direction that the club moves in both on and off the pitch.

"Joe has gone in there, rolled his sleeves up and radically overhauled the squad. Was that the right thing to do? Only time will tell.

"One thing is for sure, we have 14 games of the season left, so if he is to get them promoted then he has his work cut out for him.

“Off the pitch, they are looking a lot more stable and on the pitch, they have a decent chance of beating Swindon Town in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy area final. A return trip to Wembley is there for the taking, no question.

“And where better than Wembley for the fans who have suffered so much and been so badly treated in recent years, with all the spin and lies, to make their voices heard and celebrate their survival of their club against the odds?

“I’ll be keeping an eye on the Pompey result before our away game against Wycombe.

“Portsmouth are a fantastic big club with a wonderful fanbase. They now have a chance to show what you can achieve when a place is run properly.”

I won't knock the other styles because they are still good but I agree with you that I prefer these styles as it feels more like a traditional 'story' if that makes sense. Gives the illusion that the reader could actually be reading my updates from a news site.

I hope so too mate, things are getting better so we will just have to wait and see!

Tomas Cywka's early goal saw Portsmouth end a two-match winless run in the league with victory against AFC Wimbledon.

The Polish midfielder, who joined Pompey on loan from Barnsley during the January transfer window, his pot-shot finding the net on 14 minutes.

Steven Elliott also went close for the hosts while Harry Pell wasted the only chance of the match for the Dons.

The victory was Pompey's first in League Two since beating Wycombe 3-0 on 28 January.

Portsmouth manager Joe Jordan told BBC Radio Solent:

"Obviously very pleased, quite proud of the players to be fair. I was, I thought, justified in my criticism last week; you have to take the good bits with the bad bits and I have to say I can't give them enough praise today. Maybe they needed a kick up the backside, I don't know, but their response today was fantastic.

"I thought in the first half the football was excellent. In the second half we continued to dominate the game and push to add more goals which is a good sign, but there's a long way to go yet.

"I'm pleased for the supporters that they've got something to sing about and can enjoy the build-up to the Paint Trophy return leg at Swindon during the week."

Midfielder To Face Former Club

Simon Ferry says he is excited to return to face former employers Swindon on Wednesday night.

Based on early season form, many would be forgiven for not expecting the Blues to make it far in any of their cup competitions this season.

However, Joe Jordan’s arrival as manager has inspired a turnaround in form.

Saturday’s 1-0 triumph over AFC Wimbledon was the Blues’ seventh league win in fourteen matches since the former QPR man took over.

But Ferry – who used to play for the Robins – does not want Pompey to relax despite a two-goal advantage from the first leg.

He said: “We mustn't think that we are already into the National Final, that could lead to complacency.

“I don’t think that any side we can and have faced in this competition is better than us – we just have to make sure we show up and play like we know we can.

“But we've got some self-belief – that’s what Joe’s put back into us and hopefully that can continue.

“We’re making steady progress in the league and cups, showing that we are able to compete and win matches.

“We look so fit and full of enthusiasm at the moment and we’re scoring goals and keeping clean sheets, which is great to see.

“The fans are behind us as always and we’re enjoying our football, so we need to keep our confidence and continue winning games.

“We go to Swindon on Wednesday and they’ll be right up for it, but we want to finish the job.”

Ferry has enjoyed being central cog in a midfield five that support lone forward Stephen Elliot.

He said: “You need a good striker to be able to do that and we've found one. Stephen’s been magnificent.

“He holds the ball up well and that gives us time to get forward and support him. It’s less rigid and it gives us the freedom to enjoy ourselves.”

Simon Ferry is 15/1 with Sky Bet to open the scoring at Swindon. Open an account at www.skybet.com/pompey for great offers and to earn money for the club.

Definitely mate. The £80k per year and funds we will make from ticket sales in the friendly will be huge! Not to mention the loaning of their youth stars

Thanks dude, I felt like it was getting a bit samey wioth the updates: tranfer, match report, transfer, match report. So I thought I'd throw in a few alternative types.

Thank you again for reading and your comments.

Substitute Miles Storey's first goal of the season was not enough for Swindon to book their place in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy final after they lost 3-2 on aggregate to Portsmouth.

Neither side really dominated the game but Pompey could have gone in front but winger Kamel Larbi missed an open goal from six yards out with a header.

Andrew Williams' shot was tipped wide by Abdoulaye Keita before Storey's simple finish secured the points in the closing minutes.

The goal was nothing more than a consolation as Portsmouth's 3-1 victory in the first leg at Fratton Park was enought to see the Hampshire club secure a trip to Wembley in March.

Portsmouth manager Joe Jordan told BBC Radio Solent:

"It wasn't our best away performance of the season but we came here, defended well and caused them a few problems.

"There was a few times during the game when it looked like we were about to nick an away goal but we just couldn't get the finishing right.

"I won't be too hard on the boys as over the two legs they have been fantastic.

"Now we can turn our attentions back to our league form for the remainder of the campaign."

Portsmouth are in the JPT Final after a 3-2 aggregate win over Swindon Town.

Despite losing tonight's away second-leg 1-0 at the County Ground, Blues' 3-1 victory at Fratton Park last week was enough for them to win the tie on away goals and book their place in the Wembley show-piece.

Pompey will face League One side Preston North End after they defeated Bradford City 2-1 yesterday evening (3-2 on aggregate).

Both sides haven't met in a cup competition since 17 February 2008 when Portsmouth dumped Preston out of the FA Cup Fifth Round with a 1-0 victory at Deepdale thanks to a last-minute own goal from Darren Carter.

The match will be played at Wembley Stadium on Sunday 30 March.
