Supporters deserve to be rewarded

Pompey’s players will be greeted by a packed away crowd when they emerge from the tunnel before kick-off on Saturday.

Supporters have been quick to snap up tickets for the Scunthorpe clash after seeing their side book their place in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy Final at Wembley.

Triumphs over Exeter, Cheltenham, Gillingham, Bristol Rovers and Swindon Town have secured their final berth.

And Joe Jordan says his squad wanted to make the final and win it to reward the Fratton faithful.

The Blues boss said: “It’s been fantastic. They've bought into everything we’re trying to do and they get everything that goes on at Fratton Park.

“Since I took over, we've tried to give the players a better understanding of what the fans expect from them.

“They shouldn't need motivating and all I've done is try to guide them in the right way and give them some structure to go out and express themselves.

“We want them to work hard, but also play with a smile on their face – winning games certainly makes that a lot easier.

“Confidence and morale are high and the dressing room is buzzing – it’s been a pleasure to work with them.

“It hasn't just been about team spirit, though, because we’ve played some very good football.”

Swindon Town came up against Pompey having won just five times in sixteen games this term and desperate for a passage into the final.

Jordan said: “One more win will do it for us. The aim’s to win every game, regardless of the competition.

“But the important thing is that we get our own performance right and that’s what we’ll be focused on.

“We know what’s coming from Preston – they’ll be strong and organised. But it’s more about what we do on the day in front of a fantastic atmosphere at Wembley.”

Stephen Elliott's first-half goal saw Portsmouth earn a vital victory over League Two rivals Scunthorpe and move into play-off contention.

Pompey were indebted to keeper Abdouaye Keita, who twice brilliantly denied Paddy Madden either side of a save from David Syers' close-range effort.

Ten minutes from half-time, Elliott out-jumped Andy Dawson in the box to head Lesly Malouda's ball across the face of the goal and into the net.

Scunthorpe pressed for a leveller with Bira Dembelé clearing off the line while Chris Dawson had a late shot saved.

Portsmouth manager Joe Jordan told BBC Radio Solent:

"Another clean sheet and obviously an important three points.

"A little bit of luck (was key to the win). We've not had too much since I came but I think at times you buy your own luck and you earn your own luck and the ability to throw themselves in the way and defend the way the did.

On keeper Abdoulaye Keita: "He pulled off one very good save and he was safe for us, he's certainly put himself back into the fact that he plays a part in what we're doing."

Goals from Oscar Ewolo and Fran Yeste meant Portsmouth stunned Chesterfield and made it six games in-a-row unbeaten in League Two.

The in-form visitors, playing their second away game in 7 days, should have been ahead as early as 14 minutes but attacking midfielder Kevin Osei was unable to hit the target with his shot.

The Blues' domination continued but they were made to wait until 86 minutes to open the scoring when Ewolo powered a header in from a SImon Ferry corner.

And almost from the re-start Pompey regained possession and a lovely ball from Stephen Elliot released Yeste beyond the offside trap and the Spaniard kept his cool to seal the three points for his side.

Portsmouth manager Joe Jordan told BBC Radio Solent:

"The attitude of the team - we've talked about it over the last seven/eight games - has been absolutely spot on.

"You saw it last weekend when the attitude of the team was terrific, and we asked for that again today. We've had to come through some awkward spells.

"I think Chesterfield started very well and we had to stand up to that.

"The first goal was relief for us because it settled things down. The second half I thought we were quite commanding on the front foot and very positive."

Simon Ferry ended Cheltenham's chances of an away point with a late winner from the penalty spot at Fratton Park.

Ferry converted the late penalty in a hectic finish which saw Jermaine McGlashan denied by Abdoulaye Keita at the other end.

Portsmouth had the better chances in the match and eventually went in front when Francisco Yeste found himself in some space and his hopeful shot left Scott Brown with no chance.

Liam Sheppard levelled from Alan Dunne's poor clearance, after Oscar Ewolo's sending off left Pompey down to ten men with over half an hour to play.

But it was not enough as Adam Dodd fouled Kevin Osei in the box and Ferry blasted the resulting penalty into the net.

The victory lifts Portsmouth up to fifth in the table behind Burton Albion - who they face midweek - while Southend slipped two places to sixteenth.

Portsmouth manager Joe Jordan told BBC Radio Solent:

"We didn't play particularly well today, we must give great credit to Cheltenham because I thought they were excellent early on.

"In the latter stages of the game I thought we were the team that looked more likely to come away with the win.

"Football's a funny game, you must give credit to the opposition. They scored a good equaliser, it was a fantastic finish although I'm not happy that the chance was created by a weak clearance. At that point I would have been happy to see the game end 1-1 as we were a man down so it was looking like it would get tougher for us.

"I think it was definitely a penalty so I was glad to see it given and Simon is always confident stepping up for them."

Jordan happy with forward thinking club

Portsmouth manager Joe Jordan met with the club's board on Saturday evening to discuss the short and long-term future of the club.

Jordan took over from Guy Whittingham on 4 December, winning 10 out of 16 games so far to steer them into the League Two play-off places.

"I've got plans in my own head in which direction I think we should take Portsmouth Football Club," the 62-year-old former Pompey coach told BBC Radio Solent.

"When we have these meetings it's my chance out them across to the board and hope that they agree with me."

Jordan and the board met on Saturday and BBC Sport understands the discussions included targets for the rest of the season and preliminary discussion for the start of next season.

However, Jordan says he will need certain assurances from chairman Iain McInnes and the other directors at the club before he begins planning for next season.

"If they would like me to stay on and believe that I am the right man, I said before that it took me two seconds to decide whether to be manager as I felt that was the right thing to do," he said.

"It will need to take a lot longer than that. There will need to be frank discussions with the board about where the football club is going, the direction they are taking and if we agree then fine and if we don't then we'll keep talking."

Jordan, who was a coach at the club under Harry Redknapp, has so far been a popular choice with the supporters at Fratton Park after guiding the club into the play-off places and securing a visit to Wembley in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy since taking over.

"The discussions have been great so far," he said.

"We agree on a lot of things but there are a few things that I would like to introduce like more specialised coaching but the board have had to veto that for the minute due to budgetary constraints, and I accept that.

"We have to make sure the football club is built from bottom to top and it isn't at the moment. We have to lay some foundations so the day I move on from this club we've got to make sure the club is sound. It's been mistreated for far too long.

"Longevity of the football club is everything. Now the Supporters Trust are in control, it's time to put some building blocks in place so that what happened in the past, never happens again."

Lee Bell scored a winner to earn Burton a somewhat undeserved victory against Portsmouth, which moved the Brewers three points ahead of their opponents in the League Two play-off spots.

Kamel Larbi scored the opener for the hosts, sliding home Tomasz Cywka's cross from a tight angle, before Fran Yeste's half-volley beat Dean Lyness top open up a two-goal lead.

Graham Burke collected Adam McGurk's pass to fire home for 2-1.

Burke struck again when he rifled the ball into the far corner to level before Bell volleyed home from a tight angle to seal the points for the away side.

Portsmouth manager Joe Jordan told BBC Radio Solent:

"I can't believe that we didn't win that game.

"We had almost double the attempts on target as Burton did but unfortunately our attacking players let us down on that front.

"The defence need to shoulder some of that blame as well, we can't go on allowing teams to score three goals when they only have four chances in the whole match.

"It's not good enough and we will need to improve if we want to continue to push for promotion."

Kelvin Etuhu scored the only goal of the match as Portsmouth continued their good, late season form with a win over York City.

Etuhu out-paced Bill Robertson to get on the end of a Cedric Liabeuf pass and beat York keeper Nick Pope to score his first goal in his first match since signing on-loan for Pompey this week.

Tomasz Cywka and Stephen Elliott missed good chances for the hosts before Pope pushed a long-range Liabeuf shot on to the bar.

York gave their visiting fans little to cheer although Shaq MacDonald came close.

Blues suffer double injury blow

Pompey have been dealt a double injury blow ahead of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy Final.

Midfielders Francisco Yeste will miss 5 weeks with a twisted ankle and Kamel Larbi will sit out for 3 weeks with a groin strain.

Both players have been in good form in recent weeks and the news will rock Joe Jordan's preparations for the coming league matches as the club look to strengthen their hold on a promotion play-off place as well as the upcoming JPT Final at the end of this month.

Jordan said: “It's definitely a blow for us.

“Both of the boys play in attacking formations for us and they have been doing really well recently.

"Fran has four goals in his last ten games for us which is a great record for a midfielder.

“Kamel has chipped in with a goal and an assist in his last six games as well.

"We are approaching a crucial part of the season - we are at a run-in for a promotion place and, of course, the Paint Trophy Final.

"Managers never want injuries but it's a contact sport and these things are going to happen.

"But this is the reason why we have a big squad. There is enough competition for places and on the bright side, this will give some of the other lads a chance to show me why they should be in the team every week."

Kelvin Etuhu: Portsmouth re-sign winger

Portsmouth have signed midfielder Kelvin Etuhu on loan from Barnsley until the end of the season.

Etuhu, 25, started his career at Manchester City and also had loan spells at Rochdale, Leicester and Cardiff before joining Portsmouth in 2012 and then moving on to Barnsley six months later.

He has made 46 appearances for the Tykes, with only 16 of those being earlier this season.

It is thought that the arrival of Etuhu will be to strengthen the midfield after recent injuries to Francisco Yeste and Kamel Larbi.

Meanwhile, Wade Elliott had a request to terminate his contract at the club accepted, after news that he will be out of action for 3 months with an Achilles injury.

Sorry guys, made an arse of an update and replaced the 4-3 victory over Fleetwood with the 1-0 voctory over York when I meant to copy the template, edit it it and post the York one after.

Not able to salvage it either

Long story short, we beat Fleetwood 4-3 with two penalties, lost two midfielders to injury, signed Etuhu on-loan and then he scored the only goal as we beat York.

Portsmouth continued their impressive form by beating Rochdale in a goal bonanza at Spotland.

A Lesly Malouda own goal put the hosts ahead in the first minute, before Stephen Elliott equalised. Tomasz Cywka and Steven Hetherington made it 3-1 to the Blues but Jason Kennedy pulled another goal back for Rochdale.

Conor Coady pounced on a sliced Damien Johnson clearance to make it 4-2 to the visitors in first half stoppage time.

Ian Henderson scored shortly after the break and it was game-on for almost twenty minutes before Elliot scored a real poachers effort in the Dale box to put the result beyond doubt.

Striker sets his sights on JPT Final

Stephen Elliott has called on Pompey to maintain their recent fine form.

Joe Jordan’s side triumphed 5-3 at Rochdale on Tuesday to record a third successive victory.

Elliot’s brace and goals from Tomasz Cywka, Steven Hetherington and Conor Coady saw them climb to 3rd in the League Two table.

The Irishman lauded the dominant display, but knows that the Blues need to keep the performances up if they want to stand a chance of winning tomorrow's Final.

The striker said: “We have really stepped our game up in recent weeks and all of the boys are really enjoying their football.

“That’s three wins on the bounce now in the league as well as a good run in the FA Cup and, of course, the Paint Trophy – not a bad start for the new manager. He’s instilled some confidence and told us to go out and play with a smile on our face and fire in our bellies.

“We need to keep it up and push for the best end of the season possible – that’s the aim for all of us.

“We’ve set a high standard for ourselves now and it’s important that we maintain that until the end of the season.

“There are seven league games left as well as tomorrow's trip to Wembley, there’s no reason why we can’t get a result in every one of them.

“The work-rate and desire to win is clear to see, but we’re not over the line yet and we need to keep it going.”

Pompey fans made up almost half of the 2,224 crowd at Spotland and Elliott believes they played their part.

He said: “They were getting right behind us and the support was brilliant. It spurred us on and helped us get that fantastic result.

“We know they will be there in their droves tomorrow so it's going to be a fantastic atmosphere."

The JPT Final against Preston is expected to see a good crowd but the match is not expected to be a sell-out.

Around 46,000 tickets are expected to be sold for the match and supporters without tickets can still buy theirs here on the clubs website at

Portsmouth won their first Johnstone's Paint Trophy final with a hard-fought win over Preston North End.

Kelvin Etuhu rifled the League Two side ahead with a volley and Simon Ferry's cracking 20-yard effort made it 2-0 at the break.

Paul Gallagher pulled one back from close range on 50 minutes after breaking the offside trap to put his side back into the game.

But Stephen Elliot's late finish sealed victory and sent the Pompey fans into raptures.

Portsmouth manager Joe Jordan told BBC Radio Solent:

"Well it's Wembley, what else can I say.

"It's fantastic for the lads and a real experience for them and the supporters.

"This is a great day for everyone involved with the club, and one that was much needed and deserved.

"Right from the off we were magnificent, we got in their faces early on and there was a real hunger and desire from the boys to win this trophy and we did.

"My team-talk today will be one of the easiest I'll ever have to give. I just reminded the lads what was at stake but they were already well up for it."

Boss delighted after JPT win

Joe Jordan has hailed his players after Pompey won Sunday's Johnstone's Paint Trophy Final at Wembley.

Goals from Kelvin Etuhu, Simon Ferry and Stephen Elliott helped the Blues triumph over Preston North End.

But the Blues were already in great form before kick-off at Wembley following a run of six wins in their last seven matches.

That form continued for Pompey as they recorded the club's first ever JPT Final victory.

And Jordan was delighted with the attitude of his troops, who can now focus on a late League Two title challenge.

The Blues boss said: “The run we’re on is absolutely fantastic and the players deserve a lot of credit.

“They’re very confident at the moment and we’re just enjoying the success we’re having.

“It’s a fantastic group – there was a lot of changes during January but the new lads have come in and settled well and the old lads have made them feel at home fairly quickly.

“We’ve allowed them to play with freedom in the final third and they’ve paid me back with a bucket-load of desire.

“That’s something that we’ve gone on about quite a bit and we knew we’d be alright if we got that.

“Preston put us under a bit of pressure – particularly in the second half after they pulled a goal back – but every single one of them came to the party.

“When we took over the club was looking nervously over its shoulder and now we’re almost at the top of the table and have won a cup, which is fantastic.”

Jordan rang the changes at Wembley Stadium, after injuries to key players in the lead up to Sunday's Final.

He said: “We knew we would struggle a bit after injuries to Fran (Yeste) and Kamel (Larbi). Tomasz (Cywka) also failed a late fitness test which was a bit of a blow.

“So we were kind of forced to freshen things up a bit and it's paid off for us.”

Forward agrees move back to homeland

Adda Djeziri has agreed to join Esbjerg fB at the end of the season.

The 25-year-old Dane has managed only 2 appearances since joining the club for the second time in January, but has not found the net in either of the 2 matches.

The club are set to make just short of £100,000 from the transfer.

Blues boss Joe Jordan said: “The move hasn't worked out well for the lad and these things happen. He wasn't getting as many first-team games he would have liked and we wish him well when he moves to his new club.

”It was a good deal for all involved when he arrived as he was without a club and I felt we needed to add more attacking players to the squad.

"We picked him up for free and have sold him on for a profit, so it benefit's the club as well."

Djeziri arrived at Fratton Park for the second time on a free transfer in January and the former Blackpool man has played a total of 2 games in as many spells for Pompey.

Esbjerg fB currently sit fifth in the Danish Superliga.
