I am having problems getting a screenshot image opened up Paint/GIMP etc.

I've tried pressing F12 and then trying open the screenshot - no luck.
Tried pressing Print Screen and then pasting screenshot - no luck
CTRL C and then CTRL V - no luck.

What can I do to get the screen shot show perfectly in Paint? It tends to paste my desktop background instead.

Are you playing full screen or in windowed mode?

If you're playing in windowed mode then it should be alt + prt sc because that's what I've used and I've been on windows 8 and now on windows 10 and it still works no end, now if you playing in full screen then I thought you just pressed F12 and then that got saved onto your steam account, but I could be wrong on that one.

Or I could end up being wrong on both that that's very rare.
