I also always try to develop younger players to sell on and operate at an overall profit. This forces me to put a lot more effort and thought into my signings rather than just splurging obscene amounts of already established players. Infact its got to the point where I annoy myself if I spend anywhere near 10m+ on a player at any level.
So far in my current career I've had stints in Iceland, the MLS, Brazil and now Italy. I know that I want to manage in Poland, China, Holland, back to the MLS and maybe some other Eastern Euro countries before FM15 is said and done. That's what keeps me hooked to the one longterm save, as for individual clubs I normally only leave when I'm totally bored or if I've achieved everything I wanted.
I'm currently into my seventh or eighth season with Palermo, I expected to leave after four or five but I've remained hooked as the title has remained elusive and I'm determined to build up the clubs facilities and also get some decent homegrown players into the team. I want to really establish the academy and potentially get a new stadium before finally departing (most likely to China or back to the MLS).
Once I move on I'll remove Serie A and add Poland (I already have China, USA + Holland loaded), I normally like to have a new league loaded for atleast four seasons before I touch it as I've found that if you dive straight into a new league you've added then things are very mismatched. That just lets things settle down a bit.
