Partick Thistle FC. The Jags, The Harry Wraggs or the Maryhill Magyars. Formed in 1876, they're Glasgow's oldest professional football club. They've been the other team in Glasgow, the team for those not interested in the old firm who've dominated the landscape in Glaswegian, and indeed Scottish, football for basically as long as football has existed in Scotland. But no longer.

The team who haven't even been in a major Scottish cup final since 1971, when they beat Celtic 4-1 in their most famous moment, are about to get a revamp, and challenge at the top end of the table. With just one Scottish cup, one league cup and a handful of lower league and minor honours, we've got a long way to go if we want to topple Celtic or Rangers as Scotland's most successful club, or even if we want to be Glasgow's third most successful club (Queens Park, although now being marooned in the bottom two divisions, were the big guns in the very early days of Scottish football and have 10 Scottish Cup wins to their name). It'll take time, but I'm absolutely determined to be the big dogs in Scottish football.

Lets get into it...

Meet the Squad

Two solid choices here. Tomas Cerny is obviously number one, and Scully can perform adequately as a back up option. With Cerny getting on a bit though, it's an area I'll need to look at in season's to come, but they're more than capable for now.

We're extremely well stocked in right backs, with a ridiculous 5 players who are most effective in that position. Keown will be mostly played a centre back, however, as that's what he really is and he's not good enough on the ball to play right back the way I want it done. I'll probably try to move a couple of them on to free up some wages. Booth is our only out and out left back, although Elliott, who's versatility is exceptional, can cover there as can Turnbull, so I'll hopefully bring in someone to compete properly with Booth there. Turnbull and Devine, or Barton, will be my starting centre back pairing, but that's an area I'm looking to improve.

We're well stocked in centre midfield, with Osman, Bannigan and Barton all more than capable for now, and Fraser and Woods for cover. I'll probably look to send McCarthy out on loan as he's not going to get a game for me. Erskine will be an important player for me as an attacking midfielder, and Edwards and Spittal are capable on the right wing.

Lawless will be our left winger, and he's usually a reliable source of assists and creativity. Kris Doolan is Mr Partick Thistle, and a solid professional, so with him, Storey and Sammon we have 3 different a solid striking options. I might look to add another striker, as Sammon will be away back to Hearts in the summer.

Pre-Season

Our pre-season schedule sees us take on a host of English sides of very differing standards, so it'll be interesting to see how we do. After that we'll launch into the League Cup group stages, which haven't been drawn yet, and then into the league season. Despite a top six finish last season, we're predicted for to come 8th this season, although as always, safety will be our first priority. With a few new faces, we can hopefully pick up where we left off last season and break into the top 6 again, before becoming a regular feature in the upper echelons of the table.

2017/18 - Pre-Season & League Cup Group Stage

Well, there wasn't much of note on the transfer front so far. McCarthy went out on loan to Alloa, in League One, where he should be playing most weeks and hopefully fulfilling some of his potential. We also sold Dumbuya to Serie B side Ternana, as we had about a million right backs, so it freed up some wages to bring in players. Unfortunately, with a very limited transfer budget and not much talent available on a free transfer we've not brought anyone in yet. I basically thought that the team we've got should be good enough to achieve our target so was only really looking to bring in players better than I already have. I'm still looking to try and add a couple, and with the transfer window still open for a while yet, there should be some news on this front by the end of the month. I'm still looking for a centre back first and foremost, and a left back. Elsewhere on the pitch, I'm prepared to go with what we've got.

Solid results in our friendlies, although we were mostly playing pretty poor sides. They also don't matter and are purely for fitness as far as I'm concerned, but there you go.

League Cup Group Stage

Absolutely strolled through it. Lowland League side East Kilbride were dispatched comfortably, despite injuring Booth and Bannigan, which has caused some issues for us going into the season. We were never going to lose this though, and after Spittal's opener, we controlled the game throughout. Fraser and Storey scored either side of half time to make sure. Dundee United were next, and an early opener from former United man Erskine, before they were reduced to ten men midway through the first half. Another ex-Arab Spittal made it two, and we cruised through the rest until Osman was sent off in injury time and they brought one back from the spot with the last kick of the game.

We fell behind for the first time against Montrose, but rallied to take control by the end of the first half, and added another in the second half. Ayr were the final hurdle before qualification to the next round, and we took care of them with ease, with Spittal opening the scoring and Conor Sammon also getting his first goals for the club, the second of which was a lovely team goal. 4 games, 4 wins, 11 goals and just 2 conceded isn't a bad start to life at Thistle... Means the Group Stage table looks like this.

As expected East Kilbride lost to everyone, but a surprisingly poor campaign from Dundee United, whom I had expected to present a formidable challenge. We've been drawn against fellow Premiership side Kilmarnock in the next round, which although a tough draw, means we've at least avoided the really big teams and have a decent shot at progression to the quarters.

Season 2017/18 - August

Well, we needed more recruits in central defence, and to that end we brought in Lloyd Jones on loan from Liverpool. He's young, has all the essentials covered, and looks competent enough on the ball which is always a plus point. Hopefully we can improve him. as he'll not make it at Liverpool and I'll need players in the long term.

There was no other business, either leaving or coming in.

Matchday One

We started the season off against newly promoted Hibernian, which is a bit of a weird one. Despite being the new boys, they'll have one of the highest budgets in the league and access to players we could only dream of at this stage. In any case, we managed to get off to a great start with a 2-0 win, with Lawless notching in the first half, and Keown (son of Martin) adding a second after the break. Good start to the second.

League Cup - Second Round

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/jfzFUDp9aPYbcUxRENEzSTHXi7FMgrNaUlJb3Y0B.png

A drab first half was ended by Kilmarnock grabbing the opener in injury time, through prolific Kris Boyd. We responded with a Barton screamer and Lloyd Jones scoring on his debut. Kilmarnock then equalised right at the death, but in extra time we scored almost immediately and saw it through to reach the quarter finals. ">We'll face Queen of the South.

Matchday Two

https://sortitoutsi.net/uploads/mirrored_images/vW6TD2u1SMLxkvJJB7N1n3JQW76zubKC7FBqC8ef.png

To be expected. Celtic, as anyone with even a passing interest in Scottish football knows, are far too good for everyone in the division. Jones got his second in two games, but we were comfortably outplayed by the leagues best side. Moving on.

Matchday Three

Anything Celtic can do, we can do too! An absolute thrashing of usually solid St Johnstone. Doolan and Erskine both got doubles as we strolled to this victory. The perfect way to bounce back from the Celtic thrashing.

Matchday Four

The second best side in the league for the last few years, Aberdeen, were the final opponents of the month, and they were 3-0 up before we managed to have a slight comeback late into the game, with Sammon grabbing 2 to make it respectable, but in truth we were never in this game. I think I got the tactics wrong, went too attacking and open and was picked off by a superior team.

We sit sixth, only 4 games in and 2 wins and 2 losses have made it a mixed start to the season. Finishing in sixth would probably be a decent season, but we'll see what happens.

In other news, we're looking for a feeder club. Should be useful to send our younger players out to get a bit of experience, and is something we don't currently have access to.

Not a bad start @ptfc1876, really decent performance at St.Johnstone and I don't think anyone would be surprised at losses to Aberdeen and Celtic. Aberdeen actually won the SPL in the first season on my file!
