Chelsea confirm Zidane appointment
02 June 2018 | Football -> Chelsea

Zinedine Zidane has today penned a two-year contract to replace Antonio Conte as Chelsea's new manager. The Frenchman had resigned from Real Madrid only a few days after seeing his side lift the UEFA Champions League for a third time in successive seasons.

The ex-French captain broke records in his two and a half year spell at Real Madrid, his first managerial role, becoming the first manager in the club's history to win five trophies in a calendar year and also becoming the first manager to win three consecutive UEFA Champions League Finals.

Zinedine Zidane's Honours at Real Madrid
⦁ La Liga: 2016/17
⦁ Supercopa de España: 2017
⦁ UEFA Champions League: 2015/16, 2016/17, 2017/18
⦁ UEFA Super Cup: 2016, 2017
⦁ FIFA Club World Cup: 2016, 2017

The 2018 Champions League triumph in Kiev over Liverpool had Zidane join an elite club with Liverpool's Bob Paisley & former Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti as the men to have won the most European trophies.

Zidane also became the first person in history to have been named both the French Player of the Year twice and French Manager of the Year twice.

There will however be no Champions League football at Stamford Bridge in 2018/19 as last season's 5th placed finish in the Premier League could only guarantee a spot in the Europa League. Chelsea have history in the competition though having won it back in 2013 under Rafa Benitez with a late Branislav Ivanovic header.

The appointment comes at a time where the future of several players remains uncertain. Eden Hazard could be on his way out with rumours that Real Madrid, Barcelona & PSG are all interested in the tricky Belgian winger.

Willian, Cesc Fabregas, Alvaro Morata and Thibaut Courtois have also been linked with exits from Stamford Bridge.

Upon his appointment Zinedine Zidane Said:

"I'm delighted to have joined Chelsea. I believed I needed a new challenge and I'm very thankful to Real Madrid who gave me my first steps into football management.

"I hope to bring back Champions League football at the first attempt."

More to follow.

Summer Roundup: Chelsea FC

With the transfer window having closed late this afternoon we look at the business completed by Chelsea under new manager Zinedine Zidane ahead of their weekend's Premier League opener at home to Sean Dyche's Burnley who coincidentally could meet the south west Londoners in this season's Europa League.

Chelsea's two new signings both came after the club had finished selling, accumulating a total of £116m from player sales. The biggest name to leave the club was Pedro who joined rivals Tottenham for a cool £29m. Elsewher Batshuayi made his loan move to Dortmund permanent in a deal for £20m potentially rising to £28.5m

Elsewhere, van Ginkel, Pasalic & Kenedy were sold all for decent figures.

Chelsea fans will be delighted that after a summer linking moves away from the club for Hazard, Willian, Fabregas & Cortouis that the club were able to keep hold of their star players although a potential exit for David Luiz to Juventus fell through due to wage demands.

The Blues spent £118m on their two new stars meaning a net spend of -£2m, something which will surely please the club's board of directors.

Lyon talisman Nabil Fekir joined for a deal potentially worth £65m and is expected to play a roaming role similar to that of Eden Hazard whilst German international Timo Werner joined from Red Bull Leipzig for £53m meaning Alvaro Morata may find his starting chances limited after a hit and miss first season in the Premier League.

Transfer Incomings
Nabil Fekir from Lyon for £45m (Rises to £65m)
Timo Werner from Red Bull Leipzig for £53m
Total: £118m

Transfer Outgoings
Pedro to Tottenham Hotspur for £29m
Michy Batshuayi to Dortmund for £20m (Rises to £28.5m)
Marco van Ginkel to PSG for £13.25m
Mario Pasalic to Lyon for £12.5m (Rises to £15.75m)
Kenedy to Bayer Leverkusen for £8.5m (Rises to £10.75m)
Matt Miazga to Lyon for £5m (Rises to £7.25m)
Kenneth Omeruo to BM Gladbach for £5m
Tomas Kalas to Fulham for £3.5m
Todd Kane to Hull City for £1.9m
Eduardo to West Ham United for £1.1m
Jay Dasila to MK Dons on a season long loan
Dujon Sterling to Bradford City on a season long loan
Kasey Palmer to Nottingham Forst on a season long loan
Jeremie Boga to Huddersfield on a season long loan
Total: £116m

Chelsea's summer involved a total of five friendlies which incuded a three game tour in China. Alvaro Morata scored the winner in a 1-0 win over Shandong in their first outing following the 2018 World Cup, won by Lionel Messi's Aregentina.

Wins over Guangzhou R&F (1-0, Azpilicueta) and Guangzhou Evergrande (2-0, Giroud x2) followed before a home defeat to AC Milan (0-1, Borini). Chelsea finished their pre-season schedule with a 3-0 win away to Hamburg where Eden Hazard netted a stunning hat-trick.

Chelsea begin their season with what manager Zinedine Zidane has called a "run of fixtures to take advantage of". The Blues' first five opponents in the Premier League in the 2018/19 season are Burnley (H), Cardiff (A), Southampton (H), Huddersfield (A) and Wolves (H).

Sky Sports Predicted Finish: 4th

Sky Bet Odds:
  • Chelsea to win the Premier Leaague - 6/1
  • Chelsea to finish in Top 4 - 2/5
  • Chelsea to win the Europa League - 2/1
  • Chelsea to retain the FA Cup - 3/1

Chelsea 4-0 Burnley: Willian scores
three as Zidane's Blues win opener

Brazilian winger Willian netted an opening day hat-trick as Chelsea exacted revenge for last season's opening day defeat to Sean Dyche's Burnley side. The Blues scored the first goal of the Premier League season as Willian found space inside the first two minutes to fire a right foot shot across goal to beat Tom Heaton.

Willian doubled the home side's lead seconds short of the half hour mark with a trademark free kick after N'Golo Kante was hacked down by ex-Chelsea midfielder Jack Cork. Burnley came close halving the deficit just before the break but Sam Vokes headed over from close range when he should have perhaps found the net.

Subsitute Cesar Azpilicueta made an immediate impact as he grabbed himself an assist thirty seconds after coming on. His low cross from the right hand side met the left foot of Eden Hazard who arrived at the back post to make it three from the home side.

With seven minutes remaining on the clock, N'Golo Kante played the ball between Mee & Taylor to an onrushing Willian who rounded Tom Heaton to complete a hat-trick, the first of his career. Burnley rarely threatened throughout the second half aside from a Robbie Brady effort that almost bobbled past Thibaut Courtois.

Chelsea's new signings Nabil Fekir & Timo Werner came on at the break and linked up well with their new teammates. Werner had found the net following Hazard's mazy run and pass just past the hour mark but the flag was raised for offside, denying the German a goal on his debut.

Zinedine Zidane was pleased with his side's performance:

"The early goal helped and I believe we dominated from the very start. We didn't allow them to play and I'm sure the statistics will reflect this. I'm happy with all my players and I hope we can take this performance into our next match against Cardiff City."

Chelsea sit second in the table after their win below Unai Emery's Arsenal who stuck five past Huddersfield. Burnley are in at nineteenth. Elsewhere there were was a win for reigning champions Manchester City at home to Leicester and opening day wins for Tottenham, Watford & West Ham whilst new-boys Fulham earned a 1-1 draw at home to Southampton.

Cardiff 0-5 Chelsea: Another hat-trick for
Willian as Chelsea put five past Cardiff

Cardiff were the second team in a week to succumb to a Willian hat-trick as the Brazilian once again struck three times just as he did on the opening day of the season at home to Burnley. Timo Werner netted on his first start for the club whilst Victor Moses made it 5-0 with minutes remaining.

Cardiff's Neil Warnock was impressed by Chelsea:

"After last season's ranting and raving over Manchester City I think it could may well happen again this year with Chelsea. They were a class apart today. We couldn't get near them on the ball or even off it. Maybe it's a Pep versus Zidane year for the league.

"We struggled but I can't be too disheartened. We've been given some tough fixtures to start the season but I'm sure we'll pick up the points we need over the course of the season to keep our heads above the relegation zone."

It took 13 minutes for Chelsea to take the lead in the Welsh capital. Summer signing Nabil Fekir galloping down the left wing and pulling the ball back for Willian who struck across the ball sending it past Neil Etheridge who was rooted to the spot.

Chelsea saw plenty of the ball afterwards but failed to beat the Cardiff City defence until the 42nd minute when Timo Werner was brought down by Sol Bamba. Willian dispatched the penalty into the bottom right hand corner sending Etheridge the wrong way. A third was added before half time as N'Golo Kante's clever through ball allowed Werner to score with a simple finish.

Willian completed his second hat-trick in a week on 62 minutes. N'Golo Kante once again with a defence-splitting pass allowing the Brazilian winger space and time ahead of the Cardiff defence to fire in Chelsea's fourth of the afternoon.

Substitute Victor Moses added the fifth on 88 minutes with a tap-in at the far post following good work from Marcos Alonso on the opposite wing. Chelsea move into first place in the Premier League on goal difference after the first two matchdays of the season.

Following Chelsea's win away to Cardiff we look at what's been going on elsewhere around the club from transfers in and out whilst transfer windows in other leagues & countries remain open as well as draws for the Carabao Cup and UEFA Europa League.

There have been many players leaving the club on loan this week, all of which are listed below. We wish them all well as they spend the season away from Stamford Bridge.
  • Izzy Brown to West Bromwich Albion on a season long loan.
  • Michael Hector to Leeds United on a season long loan.
  • Juan Castilla to Sparta Rotterdam on a season long loan.
  • Lewis Baker to Middlesbrough on a season long loan.
  • Lucas Piazon to Derby County on a season long loan.
  • Fikayo Tomori to Nottingham Forest on a season long loan.
Some players have also been handed new contracts. Cesar Azpilicueta put pen to paper on a new four year deal running to 2022 whilst Willian extended his contract to 2021. The latter of the two won the Premier League Player of the Month award after scoring hat-tricks in both of Chelsea's opening two games.

Elsewhere however, Marcos Alonso snubbed a new deal. Sources at the club believing that this is due a potential move to Barcelona being blocked in the summer.

As cup competitions go, Chelsea will play Brighton & Hove Albion in the 3rd round of the Carabao Cup at Stamford Bridge. The game will be played on the 26th September 2018. The current holders of the competition are Pep Guardiola's Manchester City.

The UEFA Europa League saw Chelsea drawn in Group H alongside Russian outfit Lokomotiv Moscow, German side Eintracht Frankfurt & Slovakian minnows Slovan Bratislava. Zidane's men may want to take note that winning the competition will see them qualify for next season's Champions League, something Jose Mourinho's United side achieved in 2016/17 after only managing a 6th placed league finish that year.

Chelsea will next play tomorrow afternoon where they host Southampton.

Chelsea 0-0 Southampton: Zidane's men
left frustrated by Saint's Fraser Forster

Southampton held Chelsea to a goalless draw at Stamford Bridge this afternoon in a one-sided affair in London. Zidane's winning start brought to an end despite having a total of twenty-nine shots to the Saint's two.

A disallowed goal for Timo Werner late on proved to be the talking point as the German striker appeared to be played onside by Japanese centre-half Maya Yoshida. Cesc Fabregas who spoke to the media at full time said:

"We feel hard done by. We believe that Timo was onside and the goal should've stood but we'll pick ourselves up and continute to fight. We should have had the game won by then already."

Zinedine Zidane was also dejected by the linesman's decisions:

"I prefer not to talk about it although it has been the difference bewteen one point and three points. We played a perfect game and it's unfortunate that we came up against a goalkeeper in phenomenal form in Fraser Forster."

Southampton withstood a barrage of first half attempts across the Chelsea front line but survived until the break where Loftus-Cheek was hooked for Cesc Fabregas to add a more creative edge as the side looked to breakdown the Saint's resistance.

Eden Hazard had a left foot effort hooked off the line by Ryan Bertrand following a corner kick and Nabil Fekir struck the up-right with a thunderous drive from twenty yards. Forster then made a brilliant double save from both Werner & Fekir just before the hour mark.

Morata replaced Hazard who picked up a knock and it was he who set Werner through to score with minutes remaining. However the flag was raised and the game finished goalless after a tense five minutes stoppage time. Chelsea drop to 4th whilst Southampton's point saw them move out of the relegation zone.

Huddersfield 0-1 Chelsea: Werner hits
winner at The John Smith's Stadium

Timo Werner struck the winning goal in a tight affair at the John Smith's stadium to keep them second in the league after four games played. Nabil Fekir also impressed for the Blues on his third start for the club.

David Wagner was happy with his side's display:

"I thought we were very unlucky today. We didn't buckle against a big side and we maybe deserved to grab a point. We're very positive about the season ahead though and we firmly believe we'll be stay up for another season"

The winning strike came on twenty five minutes as Nabil Fekir's raking pass fell to the feet of Timo Werner who guided the ball first time past goalkeeper Rob Green. Werner should've doubled his tally immediately after but missed the target from six yards following good work from Davide Zappacosta on the right wing.

Huddersfield's best opportunity came through Aaron Mooy who found space unmarked at the back post, his control was perfect but the finish was lacking as Courtois parried the shot to safety. Mounie also came close with a header that missed the far post by inches.

A late rally of Chelsea attacks should've seen the game put to bed but substitutes Olivier Giroud & Ross Barkley fluffed their lines in front of goal. Marcos Alonso also struck the outside of the post with a free kick in the final minute of stoppage time.

Zidane cut an irritated figure when talking to the press:

"Just like in the Southampton game, we created very good chances and should've been out of sight. We got the win today however but in future we must be more clinical as in other games we won't be so lucky with the opposition failing to score."

Chelsea begin their Europa League campaign this coming week away in Moscow before a home game against newly promoted Wolves who have won three of their first four. Huddersfield meanwhile face Everton at Goodison Park.
