Any way to add a cup tournament with 9 teams?

So I'm running a one-off custom league with a bunch of friends and in our league we have 9 teams. I wanted to add a cup competition in addition to the league but it seems you cant add a cup competition (with a format that would be fair to everyone) with just 9 teams. Is there any way to do it?

3 groups of 3, with top of each group plus best runner up going to semis

or

have an initial 2 team play off, winner joins other 7 in last 8
