I'd recommening flogging Gervinho, as you can usually get in £10m+ for him that can be used on better players. Flogging Squillaci and Arshavin will also free up £125k p/w in terms of wages, although the latter is good cover for the attacking positions. The likes of Park, Bendtner, Chamakh and Djourou can all be sold on next summer once they return from their respective loan deals.
In terms of bringing players in, I'd recommend buying a new striker, defensive midfielder and centre-half, and perhaps another winger (depending on how you plan on utilising Walcott and Podolski). I've played a few games with Arsenal and have tried out a number of players - Neven Subotic (Dortmund) is a top defender who I got for under £10m, Christian Tello (Barcelona) is a versatile winger with good potential and Llorente is a machine up front, although I'm not sure how available he is in the new patch. I've just started a new game on my new laptop and managed to get Marc Muniesa from Barcelina for under £1m - he's young and will provide decent cover to Vermaelen, Koscielny and Mertesacker, all of whom are pretty awesome on FM13. I bought also bought Jovetic for £19m and Strootman for £13m.

Thanks for the suggestions, to be honest I want to overhaul the team completely within three seasons. How does the Polish goalkeeper whose name I won't attempt to spell do over time, or is he replaceable?

Szczesny becomes pretty awesome, actually. In one of my saves he became one of the best in the world but in a different one he made a few mistakes in his first year, so in my new game I've signed Muslera from Galatasaray. Szczesny will still be my number one in the long run.

I had:
Szczesny
Sagna
Koscielny/ Chris Smalling
Vermaelen
Baines
Phil Jones (Ball winning midfielder)
Arteta/ Ramsay as deep lying playmakers
Wilshere (AMC)
Carzola (Advanced playmaker)
Alex OC (AMC)
Podolski/ Giroud (Poacher)
Brought in:
Baines
Smalling
Jones
Owen Hargreaves
Martin Kelly
Luke Shaw
James Ward Prowse
Sold:
Arshavin
Mertesacker
Djorou (*spelling)
Gervinho
Santos
Diaby
Squillaci
Pretty sure my transfers worked out that I only ended up spending 10million more than I made.
Retrained Alex OC to AMC and Jones from DC to MC and it worked perfectly but make sure your training is bang-on and you have the right coaches in place. Didn't really need Kelly but only bought him cause it looked like I wouldn't get Jones or Smalling.
This was pre-Jan transfer update so really only difference is buying Baines but I'm not a fan of Monreal.
Won the PL, FA Cup, got to semis of CL and can't remember about the LC but it's not a big deal.
Moving into the next season I punted Sagna and brought in Clyne from Southampton and also brought in Neymar cause Podolski got a bad injury and his stats went shooting down. So my team for the future was:
Szczesny
Clynde
Koscielny/ Kelly
Smalling
Baines
Phil Jones BWM
Ramsay DLP
Wilshere (AMC)
Ward-Prowse (Advanced playmaker)
Alex OC (AMC)
Neymar (Poacher)
Tbh, I don't think Neymar was worth the £40m I spent on him.
Mr Willy
Sczesney
Sagna, Koscielny, Vermaelen, Monreal
Artet, Diaby/Wilshere/Ramsay
Cazorla/Ox-Chamb, Lewandowksi, Arshavin/Tello
Giroud
Arshavin's being an arsehole and isn't renewing his contract, and Walcott and Podolski have been absolute cunt-bandits for me, never playing well and have requested transfers. Offloaded Walcott to Fulham for £10m, so I'm looking for a permanent replacement for Arshavin.
