I have been playing Football Manager/Chapionship Manager for many years: CM2 was the first game I bought and I've played every game since. So I am not a newbie to the series by any means, however, I have never been particularly good at creating tactics. Well, not since FM06, anyway!

Currently, I'm playing as FC Bayern and, while I'm top of the league and winning most games, it's clear that there are holes in my tactics. I'm definitely winning because the quality of the side far exceeds the rest of the division, and it's no surprise that the two games I have lost this season have been to Dortmund (Super Cup and Bundesliga). I'm scoring goals for fun, but I feel like there is potential to score more, as well as tighten up a defence which hasn't conceded *too many* goals, but again, agaisnt better opposition it would be another story.

I play a 4-2-3-1: Flat back four, 2x MC, AML, AMR, AMC, ST. Here is my usual line-up:

GK: Neuer (Goalkeeper)
DL: Alaba (Full Back - Support)
DR: Lahm (Full Back - Support)
DC: Martinez (Central Defender - Defend)
DC: Badstuber (Central Defender - Defend)
MC: Schweinsteiger (Central Midfielder - Support)
MC: Khedira (Central Midfielder - Defend)
AML: Ribery (Winger - Attack)
AMR: Robben (Winger - Attack)
AMC: Kroos/Shaqiri (Attacking Midfielder - Attack)
ST: Gomez/Pizzaro (Target Man - Attack)

I sold Muller, before you ask. My thinking was that I had Kroos and Shaqiri doing a good job in AMC and didn't need him - I could have kept him and rotated my remaining players to give them a rest, and in hindsight I probably should have. but I got Sami Khedira with the money I made from the sale (£40m) and he has been outstanding.

Anyway, back to my tactics. I play a balanced, control set-up, usually playing down both flanks (this can change depending on my opponent's formation) which gives my team a lot of attacking options. My goals are shared mostly between Shaqiri, Ribery (usually free kicks) and Gomez (top scorer). Badstuber has scored a few headers from corners and free kicks as well. In 13 league games, we have scored 36 goals and conceded 9. Despite all of this, I am certain that this setup with a weaker team would not work. I haven't toyed too much with individual instructions, other than telling people who can't dribble not to run with the ball and those who can't shoot from a distance not to take long shots. Everything else is pretty much as standard.

There are a couple of things I'm thinking of trying:

1. Move my AMC to ST, play Mandzukic as my TM (Support) with Gomez as a Poacher to give the strikers more space (and hopefully more opportunities).

2. Move AMC to DMC, play Gustavo as DMC to provide extra cover to my defence and shore up the midfield a little bit.

3. Switch to a flat 4-4-2, with the wingers and fullbacks on attack settings. I'm a little bit wary of this, however, as it doesn't play to the strengths of Ribery or Robben, who are the creative life-force of the team.

Alternatively, I'd like to stick to the formation I've got, but I need some pointers on where I might be going wrong. If anyone has any specific, glaringly bloody obvious things that I'm missing, please tell me. Or if you've got suggestions on things to look at and play around with, that would be great.

I know that tactics have to be adjusted in every game to stifle your opponents, but I think that the basic set-up of my team is wrong. I'm looking to learn more about where I'm going wrong, really, and any advice would be greatly appreciated.
