My learnings after 30 seasons.

1. Can win with any formation .. I’ve used 4231 442 433 4141 etc
2. English database only has led to a heavy bias in Europe for Premier teams.
3. Playing vs AI always gives your team an advantage as quicker to tweak tactics.
4. A good relationship with other managers helps with transfers..e.g Zidane and Pogba have allowed me players I had no chance of signing from other clubs.
5. Trust the younger players to improve.
6. Teams you manage and leave tend to stay better.

17/12 .. Have beaten Saints twice ( First had 10 men) /City & United ( at Old Trafford without committing  a single foul).

( Next Leeds before lowly Liverpool to end the year). lose at home to Leeds who extend lead at the top.

Carabao progress tough in 1st match and went to pens vs a Chelsea side who beat us in the league.

Rotated squad ( busy Xmas period) blow a 2-0 lead away at Championship Wolves and ends 2-2 ..loose pens 4-3…Trophy defence over.

I berate referee for disallowing a winning goal late on for 3-2….FA warning follows.

Champions League saw me get last years foes Real Madrid ..managed a loss and a draw but did qualify by outplaying CSKA Moscow and Anderlecht … draw my old club PSG next.

1. Still can’t unlock unbeaten Achievement ( Steam ) after 32 attempts and conceded 14 goals ( how has anyone got nil in a season ( Sortitoutsi records).
2. Loans is way to go from managers / teams you get on with .. all my loans were free.
3. The money from Europe is game changing and allowing me ( board request made)to go Professional … the cup run boosted income from £1.3m to £10.5m albeit costs up £1m.
4. Get the tight Director of Youth to improve new regen hires.
5. Look for an experienced old pro … I got Nugent who was showing as retiring after the season ..35yrs old and played in every English league .. 101 caps for NI.. only trophy was U18 title with City in a 18yr career. Leads my mentor group.
6. Stay On feet reduced fouls ( least committed ) and 2nd least yellows.. only 2 suspensions.
7. A lack of internationals meant I had no issues with players missing for key cup matches.
8. Almost impossible to get permanent signings as a part time club… of any quality.
9. Set pieces important as keepers not great .. my best ever DFK result with 11.
10. Used 30 players … worth trying the youngsters in cups… 24 of them scored in the season.

After 14 wins and 4 draws ..lose away at Porto in 1st knock out round .1-2 Loss.

Mid Ulster Cup Final .. Beat Portadown 2-0 with Quinn + own goal. New youth intake Dunlop makes his debut in goal as a sub at just 15 years 244 days ( 22 days off the club record). ..does set a Mid Ulster Cup record for youngest player.

Struggle for form whilst balancing Champions League ( see off Celtic after away draw) and after being held by Linfield 1-1 have to recover from 2-0 down at half time away at Cliftonville by bringing on rested first team players to win 3-2.

After Leeds U20 team thrash Dungannon U20 ..7-1 … I draw the senior team who are 3rd in the Prem in the SF of Champions League…… draw 1-1 away.

Home .. HT 3-0 down and gets worse despite subbing underperforming star players … lose 5-1 .

Tough interview ,. Oddest question ..Why I leave jobs quickly ..having just completed 20 seasons.

22/7/69 ..Start new job.  They are top after 22 games but with no manager all season since adding the league.

Why Envigado ?

1. Never managed a South American team in any version Championship/FM I have had.
2. Youth facilities were Excellent
3. Wanted to get a non Brazil/Argentina side to Copa glory.
4. They were available.
5. Lots of room to improve the club … 11000 ground seems plenty.
6. Youth Philosophy fits with plan…. 5 players under 18 in first team.
7. No Cup wins and last of 4 second tier titles was 29 years ago.
8. Can I take having best players sold constantly … I’m not good with this !

Have to get some staff as none in place and then find its 1 week until end of transfer window .. better players already being poached for end of season free transfers.

Tactics … team are set for 442 so using this for rest of the season.

Set up corner routine … Goalkeeper suddenly up front so have to adjust ! 

Adverts for U19 positions made and sign asst mgr / scout / coach / physio / head of youth.

Make 2 loan signings.   Look for youngsters but wage demands too high For all but 1.

Board request for feeder and facilities … fail with both as too soon.

End of transfer window a nightmare .. not enough time to stop 6 first teamers in last 6 months of contract leaving End of December.

Owners undermine me by selling for £4.5m despite my objections…I get £1.6m to budget.

Game 42 ..Play off place secured .. still 2nd on goal difference from Carlisle . They have the easier run in.

After a takeover I have an interview for the vacant Man Utd job …42 years since I left .
