The Cooperation Player Rule of the Austrian Football Association (ÖFB) allows young talents to play for both their parent club and a partner club in a lower league within the same season. This regulation is designed to provide U22 players with optimal development opportunities by enabling them to gain match experience at different levels of competition.

Key Features of the Cooperation Player Rule:

  • Age Restriction: The rule applies to players eligible for U22 teams.
  • Playing Eligibility: Players can compete for both their parent club and a cooperation club in the second tier or an academy affiliated with the federation within the same season.
  • Contract Terms: Cooperation contracts can be signed during regular transfer periods, typically lasting for one year. They can also be mutually terminated in the winter transfer window.
  • Matchday Restrictions: A player may only appear for one of the teams on any given matchday. Additionally, no transfer fees or similar financial compensations can be demanded for cooperation players.
  • Maximum Number of Clubs Per Season: A player may be registered for and play at a maximum of two clubs per season under this rule.
  • Eligibility Limitation: Cooperation players are not allowed to play for the reserve teams of either club. Additionally, players born before the cutoff date of January 1, 2003, or the respective age limit set by the federation, cannot be registered as cooperation players and must be transferred on a standard loan if they move to a lower division.

This rule provides clubs with greater flexibility in player development, ensuring young talents receive regular game time at different levels of competition. A well-known example of this rule in action is the partnership between Red Bull Salzburg and FC Liefering, as well as Austria Wien and SV Stripfing.
