With no new game on the horizon after FM25’s cancellation, the Football Manager community faced uncertainty—until one dedicated FM player from China, known as Sakura, changed everything.

Using a hex editor and sheer determination, Sakura managed to tweak FM24’s match engine physics file, refining player movement, ball physics, and the overall match experience. His groundbreaking work quickly gained traction, sparking a growing movement of “match engine tweakers”—players dedicated to pushing FM24’s gameplay beyond its default limitations.

Inspired by this momentum, FM Tweak (now rebranded as FM Match Lab) introduces a new chapter in FM24, offering custom match engine mods designed to enhance and refine gameplay. Developed by a passionate team of FM enthusiasts, these mods build upon Sakura’s pioneering work, delivering a fresh take on the match engine while catering to different managerial styles. Whether you prefer attacking fluidity, defensive solidity, or an unpredictable and chaotic football experience, FM Tweak provides a range of options that amplify FM24’s depth and realism:

FM Tweak Match Engine

The FM Tweak ME Mod refines the match engine for a more realistic, balanced, and tactically rich Football Manager experience. Key improvements include:

  • More Realistic Matches: Improved physics for natural player movements, ball dynamics, and match flow.
  • Authentic Results & Stats: Eliminates unrealistic scorelines for results that mirror real-life football.
  • Tactical Diversity: Encourages varied tactical approaches instead of relying on meta tactics.
  • Revitalized Midfield Play: Restores the importance of central players like Attacking Midfielders and Box-to-Box roles.

The FM Tweak Engine is regularly updated with a 1.1 Patch already released, the first patch includes key improvements for better realism and balance:

  • Defensive Line Fix: Prevents unnatural defensive line breaks.
  • Fewer Corners – Reduces the excessive number of corner kicks.
  • Physical Adjustments – Tweaks player speed in headers and sliding tackles.
  • Defensive AI Improvement – Enhances defensive player engagement.
  • CB Rating Fix – Corrects center-back ratings being too low.

How to Install Custom Match Engines

FMTweak Match Engine Manager is currently a Windows-exclusive tool designed for effortlessly managing custom match engines in FM24. It allows seamless switching between engines without manually renaming or moving files, ensuring a hassle-free experience. The tool also includes an automatic backup and restore feature, safeguarding the original match engine for easy reversion.

If you’re not using Windows or prefer manual installation, follow these steps:

1. Locate Your FM24 Directory:

  • Windows (Steam): Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Football Manager 2024\data
  • Windows (Epic Games): Program Files (x86)\Epic Games\FootballManager2024\data
  • Xbox: Xboxgames\Football Manager 2024\data
  • Mac (Steam): Users/<Your Name>/Library/Application Support/Steam/steamapps/common/Football Manager 2024/data
  • Mac (Epic Games): Users/Shared/Epic Games/Football Manager 2024/data

2. Backup the Original Match Engine:

  • Rename or move the original simatch.fmf file to another location for safekeeping.

3. Install the Custom Match Engine:

  • Download the custom match engine (e.g., FM Tweak v1.1).
  • Move the simatch.fmf file into the FM24 directory (step 1).

4. Launch the Game and Enjoy!

For Windows users, FMTweak Match Engine Manager automates this entire process, making engine management seamless and effortless.

How to Create Your Own Custom Match Engine

These match engines are created by editing the “physical_contraints.jsb” file that’s within simatch.fmf. Usually have to use a hex editor to edit this file which can be quite complicated, but fortunately we have a tool for you that makes it much easier, our Physical Constraints Editor. Using this you can create your own custom match engine and to make things even easier we’ve included a comparison of the changes each custom match engine has made to the original FM24 version.

Once you’ve made any edits you wish to make simply click “Download Modified File” and you’ll be given a new “physical_constraints.jsb”. To install it follow these instructions:

  1. Extract simatch.fmf (See our resource archiver guide on how to extract fmf files)
  2. Delete simatch.fmf and place the now extracted “simatch” directory in the same location (these files don’t need to be in .fmf format to work)
  3. Replace the physical_constraints.jsb in the direcotry with the one you just downloaded from our editor

If you make future edits to your custom match engine simply visit the physical constraints editor again and use Choose File > Upload Custom File at the top to upload your custom file. That way you don’t need to start from scratch.

And to reinstall your file a second time you only need to do step 3.

If you’d like to share your custom match engine you may find it easier to use the resource archiver’s “Create Archive” function to create a new simatch.fmf instead. But you can also just share a zip of the simatch directory. Make sure to instruct anyone you’re sharing it with to remove the original simatch.fmf when using yours and to extract the .zip.

Alternative Match Engines

🇨🇳 Sakura - Attacking Play

The first of the two original FM24 Custom Match Engines, Sakura’s engine became a viral sensation in the Football Manager community. This engine significantly enhances attacking gameplay, making matches more fluid, dynamic, and exciting.

🇰🇷 Korean - Balanced | Solid Defence

One of the two original FM24 Custom Match Engines, the Korean engine introduces subtle but effective tweaks that strengthen defensive play. It creates a more structured and disciplined defensive system, rewarding teams that prioritize solidity at the back.

🇨🇳🇰🇷 Asian Fusion - Attacking Play | Balanced

This engine blends the attacking fluidity of Sakura’s “Chinese Engine” with the defensive stability of the “Korean Engine.” The result is FM24’s “Asian Fusion Match Engine,” which delivers a well-balanced gameplay experience with both offensive creativity and defensive resilience.

💥 Tweaksanity - Chaotic

This match engine takes every parameter to the extreme, creating a completely unpredictable Football Manager 2024 experience. If you think tweaks don’t make a difference, try this mod and see for yourself. With outrageous physics, wild match dynamics, and non-stop chaos, Tweaksanity is the ultimate stress test for FM Tweak’s work. Proceed with caution!

🕹️ Tweak Arcade - Attacking Play | Balanced

FM Tweak’s Arcade mod is designed for players seeking a faster, more exhilarating Football Manager experience. If realism isn’t your priority and you want high-energy, end-to-end matches, this mod is perfect for you. Expect unpredictability, drama, and non-stop action!

🇮🇹 Tweak Lockdown - Journeyman

For those who love defensive football, the grind of narrow victories, and the satisfaction of keeping clean sheets, FM Tweak Lockdown is the ideal mod. This engine slows the game down, making every match a tactical battle of resilience, discipline, and determination. A true test for managers who prioritize structure over spectacle.
