Quíntis Lobato
My Stevenage playing against Al-Ahli away. They have the better squad and home advantage, it's not going to be any easy for us. In general they're using a 4-3-3 formation. While attacking, IWB Faisal will cover the midfield, Galeno cut inside and Maxi stay wide on the right wing, which makes it a 3-2-2-3 or 3-2-5. Even though their starting striker Castro is faster than any defender of mine, he has his weakness - can't jump.
According to this info, we'll adjust our 4222: 1. have the 2 DMs more involved in defending to outnumber their players on front. 2.Use mid-block and midline to start the game, really careful about press too much, see how's their tempo and directness, focusing on keeping the ball under our feet.
Usually matches like this I'll focus on counter attacking, but in this one, they have great advantage in both stamina and pace, so I decided to slow down the tempo as much as I can.
2', They changed 2 of the starting XI - Ivan Toney as striker and Joey Veerman as midfielder. I can't invite crosses now; Toney can deliver good header.
4', A brief transition in play confirmed my suspicion — rather than employing their trademark high press, they seemed to be luring us to push our defensive line higher, deliberately creating vacuum spaces for their lightning counterattacks to exploit.
Oh, I forgot to mention, their manager is Alfred Schreuder, former head coach of Ajax, a man very good at high press in his attacking style.
5', We had our great opportunity to goal early! Galeno made a mistake, and we ended up hitting the woodwork.
As you can see, while we have the ball, how often they're pressing - Toney is back very deep, and their DM Ugochukwu is not holding his position too.
8', They scored in their very first attacking, by throw-in, no comment.
29', We are under great pressure. Until now, we have more possession as expected, just can't create the 2nd CCC.
30', And here it is, the 2nd chance, coming from good vision of our CB.
36', It happened again.
Nothing we can do to stop this.
36', Our players were undeterred by the 0-2 deficit (a marked improvement over Camavinga's resilience, wouldn't you say?), mounting an effective counterattack within a minute.
HT', Halftime stats speak for themselves — I've no complaints. Our boys even out-created Al-Ahli in chance generation, though that clinical final touch eluded us. Down by one, I'll keep strategic patience: let them blink first with tactical adjustments, then adapt accordingly.
They do made a change, sub in Gabri Veiga but won't change anything tactically.
46', Of course there's more. They've slowed down the tempo, notice that in their first attacking. Still, don't think we need to change.
55', Our AM Gomes carved out another golden counterattack opportunity through sheer individual brilliance, but... young left-back Harwood must've seen Van Persie compilations in his sleep last night.
57', They made a change. fast boy Castro in, Toney out. There're 5 or 6 more tired player, no idea why they did this.
64' Time to do something. Sub out Thorsby, he's too old and slow to deal with those fast boys, and LB Harwood, he's underporforming.
The other side did the same. Still have no idea why they sub out Anselmino, not underperforming nor tired. You might have noticed it too - their players are mostly tired, it's a great timing for us to change to gegrenpress (it won't make a difference cuz AI's player can run as Bolt while having less than 40% OPC but I'll do it out of realistic reason).
68', It's not beautiful, but non-beautiful goal counts too. Dumas, we signed him yesterday and he scored in his debut!
69', right after we equalized, they used the last sub count, and I still have 3.
72', Still 2-2. Conventional wisdom would have me burning through 3-4 subs windows by now — possibly emptying the bench entirely if chasing the game. But with potential extra time looming, I'm opting for restraint, conserving strategic reserves for the marathon ahead.
80', Time to unleash the all-in gambit: burn through all sub windows to maximize fresh-leg dominance, crank up the tempo, and hunt that knockout blow before extra time beckons!
82', Their tactical riposte came swiftly — a 5-2-3 wide formation reshuffle. While the chess move is structurally sound, Gabri Veiga as wing-back? That's a square peg in a round hole. Time to hammer their left flank like a sacrificial pawn on a chessboard.
88', What can I say, you are my Rice today!

FT, it's a wonderful win for us. Proud of my boys.
