For years, Football Manager has mirrored the evolution of the real game, from the rise of pressing to the intricacies of data analysis. With FM26, Sports Interactive is delivering what feels like the most significant tactical overhaul in the series’ history: the introduction of distinct In Possession and Out of Possession formations.

Dual Formations: One Team, Two Shapes

This new system gives players something they’ve been requesting for years – the ability to set up a team differently depending on whether they have the ball or not. No longer are you tied to one static formation. A 4-3-3 on the ball can now seamlessly transition into a 4-1-4-1 when defending, or a 3-2-5 when chasing a goal. The choice is entirely yours.

FM26 allows for ambition and experimentation, with backroom staff providing guidance if your tactical approach risks becoming too extreme.

A Redesigned Tactics Menu

The overhauled Tactics menu makes these dual formations easy to manage. Managers can now view their setups in four ways: In Possession, Out of Possession, Both, and Combined.

The Combined view is particularly powerful. It not only shows the average positions of players across both formations but also allows managers to make personnel changes that apply to both shapes at once. It’s an elegant solution that makes tactical adjustments more intuitive than ever.

The Visualiser: Tactics Come to Life

Perhaps the most striking addition is the Visualiser. Found in the Team Instructions screen, it breaks down the pitch into thirds and shows exactly how roles adapt as the ball moves.

Powered by training-match scenarios, it gives an authentic preview of your tactical ideas. An Inside Wing-Back drifting into midfield during buildup, a Pressing Midfielder stepping high during the press. These nuances are now visible before you even step into a match. The Visualiser takes theory and translates it into something managers can see, analyse, and perfect.

Player Roles: Old Favourites Out, New Specialists In

To support these changes, FM26 redefines player roles. Some older, niche roles like the Mezzala, Enganche and Trequartista are gone, while a wave of modern positions have been added. The list includes the Overlapping Centre-Back, Playmaking Wing-Back, Wide Forward, Channel Forward and more.

For the first time, Out of Possession roles also feature, giving defensive structures more clarity. Instead of relying on rigid “duties,” behaviour now flows naturally from a player’s role in both phases. It’s a cleaner, more flexible system that reflects how the modern game is coached.

Match Engine: Sharper, Smarter, More Realistic

FM26 doesn’t just change tactics on paper, it changes them on the pitch. The match engine has been overhauled to reflect the added tactical freedom.

Passing feels more intelligent, with players weighing risk before threading line-breaking balls or disguising passes around defenders. Dribbling looks more authentic, with wide players varying their speed, cutting inside naturally on their stronger foot, and timing bursts past defenders.

In attack, midfielders are smarter in half-space runs, strikers exploit cutback opportunities, and a new Pass to Feet instruction gives managers even greater control over buildup. Defensively, pressing shapes are more cohesive, interceptions feel organic, and goalkeepers are more reliable with significant improvements to saves, distribution, and command of their area.

Team Instructions: Clarity and Control

Even the Team Instructions screen has been rebuilt. Now, only the relevant third of the pitch is highlighted, showing how tactical tweaks affect your side in real time.

The integration with the Data Hub makes this even more powerful, ensuring that tactical decisions aren’t just instinctive but evidence-driven. It’s a system designed to empower managers to act with both intuition and insight.
