Football is full of fallen giants. Clubs that once lit up European nights, produced world-class players, lifted major trophies, only to come crashing down into financial ruin, boardroom chaos, or even bankruptcy. With FM26 launching in a few weeks, it’s the perfect time to plan your next big save. Whether you’re a tactical purist, a master of moneyball, or just love a good underdog story, these are five fallen giants begging for a rebuild:
FC Kaiserslautern (🇩🇪 2. Bundesliga)

Once kings of German football, Kaiserslautern boast four Bundesliga titles (their last in 1998) and a proud cup history. But the 2000s weren’t kind. Relegations, debt, and years spent bouncing between divisions have turned them from European contenders into second-tier survivors.
Why? They play at the Fritz-Walter-Stadion, a 50,000-capacity ground rebuilt for the 2006 World Cup, one of the biggest in the lower leagues. Financially, they’re stable enough, with the potential to grow fast once you hit the top flight.
The challenge? Outmuscle Leipzig, Dortmund, and Bayern to restore “Der Betze” to its former glory.

FC Sochaux-Montbéliard (🇫🇷 National)

Founded by the Peugeot family, Sochaux are one of France’s oldest professional clubs. They’ve won Ligue 1 twice (though the last was in 1938) and lifted the French Cup as recently as 2007.
But financial mismanagement saw them tumble into the third tier, a shocking fall for a club with such a rich academy history. Players like Jérémy Ménez and Eliaquim Mangala came through their ranks, and FM26 gives you a chance to revive that production line.
Why? With excellent training and youth facilities, a decent budget, and a 20,000-seater stadium, Sochaux are a hidden gem for anyone who loves a homegrown rebuild.
The challenge? Take them from National to Ligue 1, and maybe, just maybe, dethrone PSG.

Málaga CF (🇪🇸 Segunda División)

Few stories in modern football are as dramatic as Málaga’s. From playing in the Champions League in 2013 under Manuel Pellegrini with stars like Isco, Joaquín, and Willy Caballero, to financial collapse, relegation, and scandal, wit their former owner even faced prison for mismanaging the club.
Why? Málaga starts in Spain’s Segunda División, with a big fanbase, a strong squad, and minimal funds. That means every signing, every loan, and every academy graduate will matter.
The challenge? Build something sustainable while fighting against La Liga’s financial imbalance.

Charlton Athletic (🏴 League One)

A proper English football story — the highs of Premier League stability under Alan Curbishley, followed by a slow slide down the pyramid.
Now stuck in League One, Charlton Athletic are a London club with a proud history, a strong academy, and a fanbase desperate for revival.
Why? You’ll have around £1.5 million in the bank and a tight transfer budget, so this save is about smart scouting and clever use of loans. The squad features solid League One talent like Tyrese Campbell and Thomas Kaminski, giving you a real shot at promotion in year one.
The challenge? Bring the Valley back to the Premier League — and maybe even to Europe.

Palermo (🇮🇹 Serie B)

Palermo were once home to players like Edinson Cavani, Paulo Dybala, and Javier Pastore, and they regularly competed in Serie A during the 2000s. But financial collapse sent them spiralling down to Serie D — the fourth tier of Italian football.
Why? Passionate fans, unique kits, and a talented young squad. Financially modest but stable, Palermo are primed for a steady climb back to the top.
The challenge? return them to Serie A, take on Juventus, Milan, and Inter — and bring European nights back to Sicily.
