🟡⚫ Borussia Dortmund Tactical Setup – “Alpenkicker 3-4-1-2”

Formation: 3-4-1-2
Philosophy: Structured, possession-based football focused on compactness, vertical link-up play, and controlled transitions.

🧱 Defensive Structure

Dortmund’s defensive shape relies on a back three, anchored by Anton, with Bensebaini and Anselmino (or Schlotterbeck/Süle) providing width and defensive balance.

The wide centre-backs step out to cover the flanks when needed, ensuring compactness in the middle.

Kobel, as a modern sweeper-keeper, supports the high defensive line by anticipating through balls and helping in build-up play.

Out wide, Svensson and Yan Couto act as wing-backs – responsible for maintaining width, pressing opposing fullbacks, and offering overlapping support in attack.

The defensive stability comes from the double pivot of Nmecha and GroĂź, who shield the back line, recycle possession, and close passing lanes in midfield.

⚙️ Midfield Control

The midfield duo of Nmecha and GroĂź provides both physical presence and technical control.

They function as Volante-style midfielders, pushing forward when in possession but remaining compact out of it.

Their positioning ensures Dortmund can dictate the game’s rhythm, shifting seamlessly between possession play and pressing phases.

Brandt, positioned as the central attacking midfielder (No. 10), acts as the creative link — drifting between the lines, orchestrating play, and feeding the two forwards.
He is the main conduit for chance creation, responsible for unlocking defenses with vision and composure.

🎯 Attacking Shape

In the final third, the system centers on the strike partnership of Guirassy and Adeyemi.

Guirassy offers physicality, aerial dominance, and finishing instinct.

Adeyemi provides pace, dynamism, and direct dribbling to stretch defensive lines.
Together, they combine short one-twos and quick movements to open spaces behind defenders.

The width comes primarily from Svensson and Couto, who advance high in possession to pin back opposition fullbacks.
Brandt supports just behind them, ensuring triangular passing options across all attacking zones.

đź’ˇ In Possession Instructions

Passing: Shorter

Tempo: Lower

Width: Standard

Offensive Transitions: Standard

Creative Freedom: Balanced

Time Wasting: Rarely

Set Pieces: Keep play flowing after set pieces

This structure promotes patient, deliberate buildup play, focusing on retaining possession and creating overloads in central zones before accelerating into attacking phases.

🧠 Out of Possession

When defending, Dortmund stays compact and organized, pressing in phases rather than all-out aggression.
The front three (Brandt, Adeyemi, Guirassy) trigger pressure from central areas, forcing opponents wide where the wing-backs and outer centre-backs engage.
The midfield pair closes gaps and denies vertical passes — ensuring control of the half-spaces.

⚔️ Style Summary

This 3-4-1-2 system embodies Dortmund’s modern tactical evolution — disciplined at the back, intelligent in possession, and efficient in transitions.
It allows key players like Brandt and Adeyemi to express themselves creatively, while maintaining a solid defensive block and control through the midfield pivot.

It’s a blend of German structure and fluid attacking football, perfectly suited for Dortmund’s fast-paced, technically gifted squad.

đź“„ Tactic Review: Alpenkicker 3-4-1-2 FM26 Quick Test (Eintracht Frankfurt)

Tactic Details

Name: Alpenkicker 3-4-1-2 (BVB Tactic file)

Formation: 3-4-1-2 (A classic back three with a midfield diamond/box)

Tested Club: Eintracht Frankfurt (Saison 2025/2026)

Simulation Mode: Staff handled all decisions (simulated full season)

Seasonal Results Overview

CompetitionResultComment
Bundesliga3rd Place (60 Points)Secured direct qualification for the UEFA Champions League!
UEFA Champions LeagueRound of 16Eliminated by FC Liverpool (3:4 on aggregate).
DFB-Pokal2nd RoundEarly exit against TSG Hoffenheim (2:3 away).

Key Performance Metrics

Goal Difference: +18 (50 goals scored, only 32 goals conceded)

Defensive Strength: With only 32 goals conceded, SGE boasted the second-best defense in the entire Bundesliga (just behind Bayern Munich's 30) – a strong testament to the stability of the 3-4-1-2 system.

Match Balance: 16 Wins, 12 Draws, 6 Losses. The high number of draws suggests excellent fundamental stability but potential issues in converting close games into victories.

Conclusion and Recommendation

The "Alpenkicker 3-4-1-2" tactic has proven to be an absolute success in the quick test with Eintracht Frankfurt. The primary objective—qualifying for European competition—was comfortably exceeded by securing third place. The back-three system works exceptionally well defensively with the current SGE squad.

This tactic provides an outstanding foundation for a Long-Play save and should be considered a top contender. Potential areas for improvement include boosting the offensive output (goal tally) and performance in the domestic cup competition.
