Saturday, 24th April 2027 - South China AA [1st] vs. Hong Kong U23s [8th] (BOC Life Hong Kong Premier League)

Fem names an unnamed first XI for the visit from Hong Kong U23s today, as they look to continue their march to the title.

And it takes just 20 minutes for South China to take the advantage. A foul in the box leaves the referee with no option but to award the penalty, which is dispatched with ease by Craane. He just can't stop scoring!

And on the cusp of half-time, South China double their lead. Hong Kong U23 attempt to clear the ball, and it is picked up by Siu Pak Lam. He runs, unchallenged, towards the box, gets a cross in, and it is headed in by Brito for his tenth goal of the season. There are some questions about whether Brito is onside…but the replays show he is well onside. The goals stands! 2-0!

With the game seemingly won, Fem rings the changes and uses all six subsitutions. How will the second half pan out?

Well, we have had to wait until the 70th minute, but South China have scored again! It's another well worked throw-in routine, as Au Man Lok attempts to find Matt Orr at the far post…but it is cleared by Hong Kong. Shiu Tsz Long intercepts and finds Orr unmarked in the box. He turns, and lashes the ball home from the edge of the area. It curls past the keeper and gives South China a third!

Wednesday, 12th May 2027 - South China vs. Resources Capital (Sapling Cup Final Stage - Final)

Having recently completed his Continental C coaching qualification, Pontus Fem will be looking to prove himself once again in what has been an incredible first season with South China. Having already secured the Challenge Shield, one win from claiming the BOC Premier League, the Hong Kong FA Cup final on the horizon, the Sapling Cup offers South China the chance at an unprecedented quadruple.

Given the competition's strict rules about the number of U22 players that must be in the team, Fem does make a number of changes to his team for the game. Unsurprisingly, we see Jordan Doherty drafted in to defence and Luke Mitchell in behind Matt Orr. Rather surprisingly, however, he makes the bold choice to include a trialist in the form of Tam Yun Hing. The US-born midfielder, who is also eligible for Hong Kong, is on trial with the club. Fem has spoken very highly of the wide player, and it will be interesting to see how this fares for him and the club.

And it takes just five minutes for the action to begin. Shiu Tsz Long whips a corner kick into the box, and it is the debutant Tam who rises highest. He heads the ball on, and it is met by Castro who is able to steer it into the net for 1-0.

Matt Orr has a goal disallowed just before the break, and the teams go in at half-time with South China leading. Fem makes a couple of changes.

And, if we are honest, the second half is really quite quiet. South China dominate the game without scoring, and bar a few speculative chances from both sides, there's not much to write about. Other than Pontus Fem's record now reads: two finals, two trophies.

Sunday, 16th May 2027 - Eastern AA [3rd] vs. South China AA [1st] (BOC Life Hong Kong Premier League)

And we find ourselves at the penultimate game of the league season. A win for South China will claim the title with a game spare. A draw might be enough if other results go their way, but it is likely that Fem will want to control his own destiny. A very strong team named by the Swede, as they face off against Eastern AA.

And South China take the lead after just 12 minutes. Or, at least they think they do. Luke Mitchell has the ball in the back of the net from a Siu Pak Lam cross, but he is flagged offside and the goal won't stand.

And the first half really does tell the story of South China's season so far. They have controlled the ball, out-passed their opponents, and had a decent number of chances but have struggled to get them on target. The first-half ends up 0-0. In the other game that might help decide the championship, Wofoo Tai Po are holding 2nd place Hong Kong FC to a goalless draw. As it stands, South China will claim the trophy today, but with 45 minutes of football to play, what twists and turns are ahead of us?

After 52 minutes it is still 0-0 here, but we are hearing that Hong Kong FC have taken the lead in their game. As it stands, South China are still top of the table, but their lead has been cut to two points.

But, less than ten minutes later, South China do have their goal! A good bit of build-up play finds Long on the edge of the area, who launches a high cross into the far post. It is met by Matt Orr, who heads home and gives South China the lead. 1-0, and they are 30 minutes from being named champions.

Hong Kong get another goal, but it isn't enough. South China keep Eastern at arms length, claim the three points, and are crowned champions of Hong Kong for the first time since 2013. Fem's first season, and his third trophy!

FEM REFLECTS ON SEASON SO FAR

In an exclusive interview with the Post, South China Athletic Association manager Pontus Fem was more than happy to speak on the successes of the club, plans for next season, and how they might fare in the AFC Champions League.

The Season So Far

“Many people claimed they expected some success this season from us, but if anyone thought we'd achieve what we have I'd say they were lying!” And he isn't wrong. South China were predicted to finish towards the top of the table, with many saying they could or should finish in the top three. But, the difference in stature between Kitchee and the rest of the league is huge, and the idea they might do anything but push their rivals seemed ridiculous to most. But, as we all know, they did more than just push. In fact, it's fair to say despite their size, South China have massively over performed.

Sixteen league wins, fifteen goals conceeded, and the second highest scorers in the league, South China are worthy champions. But, they aren't just champions.

“When I took the job at the start of the season, I think it raised a few eyebrows. And I include my family in that! It was always a risk moving across the globe, but in South China I saw an opportunity. They are a huge club in Hong Kong, and have a history that rivals many. But, they were a sleeping giant, and they were willing to take a chance on me.” In fact, Fem was one of just three foreign managers in charge of a club here in Hong Kong at the start of the season. South China is his first job in management, and it was a risk for all involved. But, it was a risk that paid off. South China are on the verge of pulling off the unthinkable, and claiming their fourth domestic trophy of the year. Not many managers can say their maiden season resulted in four trophies. But, Pontus Fem is one who can. The winner really does take it all.

Next Season

“The challenge ahead of us is huge. Success must breed success, and the level of success we have had means we have no room for error next season. We must build this team up, and the challenge will be retaining.” But South China also have a huge challenge on the horizon they must face. A continental sized challenge. Winning the league means the team have qualified for the AFC Champions League next season. And, this season's representative for Hong Kong did not fare so well. Lee Man failed to get a single point, scored just one goal, and conceded eighteen. And, given they will face teams from significantly larger leagues and nations, just how will South China fare?

“The reality is simple. We are minnows in this competition. We want to compete, but the reality of the situation is we will need to do everything in our power to simply survive. Any results we get will be historic for the club. But, in order to stand even a chance of surviving with some dignity, we will need to reinforce and strengthen. And that is a challenge in and of itself.”

And Fem was honest. The squad will need significant investment and that will mean persuading players across the league to take a chance on him, in the same way that South China did 280 days ago. And that will be a challenge. Given their recent history, there are no guarantees that South China will be able to replicate what they have.

The next few months will be an interesting case study. Fem is adamant it is a challenge he is up for. His board are backing him. The fans are behind him. Will he succeed? At the start of the season many expected him to be on his way back to Sweden by now, with the answer to that question a resounding “no”. But, four trophies and a 77% win percentage later, if anyone can find a way to do something it might just be him.

Saturday, 22nd May 2027 - South China AA [1st] vs. Resources Capital [10th] (BOC Life Hong Kong Premier League)

And the final game of the season is upon us. And with the league title secured, Fem makes five changes. Some are enforced, due to injury, and some appear to be in the name of providing opportunities to squad players.

And the champions take the lead after just 16 minutes. A Joabe Brito freekick is curled into the far-post, and met by Vas Nunez, who heads home. The players celebrate, as do the fans. Great goal, and their dominance continues.

And South China get a second just before half-time. Luke Mitchell whips a corner in to the near post, which is met by Matt Orr, who gets his seventh goal of the season. South China are cruising.

At half-time, Fem makes the bold choice to bring off Akrigg, Brito, Mitchell, and Rodriguez.

It was risky, and Resources Capital have clawed one back. Clumsy defending allows Lee Ching to be free on the edge of the area. He evades three South China defenders, and strikes it high into the net. 2-1 and game on!

But it isn't enough. South China see off the challenge and run out 2-1 winners. The season draws to an end with yet another South China victory. One game left, and then a busy summer ahead for the Shaolin Temple.

Hong Kong FA Cup - Wikipedia

Saturday, 22nd May 2027 - South China AA vs. Eastern AA (Hong Kong FA Cup)

For the final game of the season, South China name a relatively strong side. There is just one game that stands between them and an incredible quadruple. Regardless of how the season finishes, Pontus Fem and the Shaolin Temple have achieved something great.

And it takes just 17 minutes for South China to get a lead. A corner kick is flicked on by Alberto Rodriguez, and it loops up and over the keeper and into the net. What a goal! 1-0 South China! One hand on that fourth trophy.

Less than 6 minutes later, and Eastern strike back! It is game on here! South China fail to clear a corner of their own, and Eastern manage to work it to Ng Yu Hei, who lashes home from fifteen yards to make it 1-1! That hasn't happened often this season. Is it a case of too much pressure for South China?

And it goes right to the death! Eastern AA did their best to hold South China, but Fem has made the right changes today to find the edge. Chen Ngo Hin finds Matt Orr, and they play it between themselves in the Eastern AA box until Orr finds space, turns, and scores a wonderful goal to give South China the lead in the 86th minute. His eighth goal in 21 games this season might just be enough. Can South China hold on?

YES THEY CAN! THEY HAVE DONE IT! WHAT A SEASON! SOUTH CHINA HAVE IT ALL!

BREAKING NEWS - MITCHELL'S FUTURE DECIDED AND OTHER SOUTH CHINA AA TRANSFER NEWS

When Pontus Fem joined South China AA last season, it took him just four days to make his first signing in management. He looked to a young midfielder, relatively unheard of, who was without a club having failed to make an appearance for Hong Kong XI. Luke Mitchell would go on to be an integral cog in the South China machine under Fem, as they dominated football in Hong Kong last year. The now 20-year-old play maker grabbed 11 goals and 5 assists in 32 starts under Fem, and has shown glimpses of quality.

Many said a talent like his wouldn't stay at South China. And, just a week ago, it looked like that may well be true. With a year left on his deal, Mitchell spoke to the club and announced he was considering his options and may well run his contract down. Fans were devastated. The idea that they might just need to sell their golden boy ahead of their return to the AFC Champions League, or risk losing him on a free was a real Sophie's choice for the club.

However, it would appear the Swedish manager has worked his magic again. South China announced today that Luke Mitchell had signed a new two-year deal with the club. Talking to the Post, a spokesperson for the club stated, “Luke is a brilliant talent and a great player to have in the changing room. He knows he is loved here, and he knows he is valued. For him to decide to stay is a testament to the project that Pontus is putting together for the season ahead. Obviously, if the right opportunity came along, no-one at the club would begrudge him that chance. But, until then, he's one of us!”

Fans will be delighted at the news as the club begins their biggest challenge yet; rebuilding before the AFC Champions League challenge. Fem will have a mountain ahead of him if he's to stand a chance of doing anything in the competition. South China are minnows in comparison to the other clubs who they will face, and fans of South China will just be keen to see their team line up against the others. Fem will want his team to put in some good performances, and try and find a way to still be competitive domestically.

We understand that the transfer business is underway, and South China have already begun negotiating with players for the season ahead.

Club Announcement: Tse Ka Wing

The Football Association of Hong Kong, China Limited

The club are delighted to announce the signing of Hong Kong international Tse Ka Wing on a free transfer following his release from Kitchee Sports Club. A hugely experienced HK Premier League player, who has also played for clubs across Hong Kong, brings experience and quality to the team.

Having started his career with South China, he failed to make an appearance for the club in his first spell. We are delighted to welcome him back to the club.

On the signing, our manager has said, “Tse is arguably one of the best keepers in the league. When an opportunity like this arises, you can't say no. He's coming off the back of a disappointing season, and has everything to prove. I know he has the ability to change games for us, and I can't wait to get started with him".

SEASON PREVIEW - SOUTH CHINA AA

To say it has been a busy summer so far at South China would be an understatement. Ahead of their first AFC Champions League campaign, South China have been working hard to build the squad into something that can compete. We've spoken to people inside the club, who have given an insight into inner workings.

“I think Pontus is keen to show last year was not a fluke. There's huge pressure now to replicate what we did domestically. Throw in the Champions League, and things are really tough. We all know that the reality of the campaign is that we will struggle hugely. Clubs from Australia, Japan, and South Korea all have much deeper pockets. And that's before you factor in the clubs from the Gulf. Football in Hong Kong is on a low rung, and Fem recognises that this could be an opportunity for us to inject some cash into the club, and regardless of our performance, a chance for the club to grow.”

And they've been busy recruit ahead of the season. They've secured the signings of Tse Ka Wing, as well as fullback Chow Tsz Him from Hong Kong FC and William Grierson from Kitchee. And the rumours are things won't stop there. The club are rumoured to be looking at at least six more players. Fem is quoted as looking for “quality and depth” to the squad.

“The AFC Champions League will mean lots of travelling. The squad needs to be robust enough to deal with it, and have enough quality to be able to perform on all fronts. That means some players will need to go, and some will need to come in."

Many were also surprised by the decision made by Jordan Akrigg to turn down a return to England with Sunderland. Sources close to the player claims he feels a debt of gratitude to the manager who signed him. Having previously been released by Vanarama Northern Premier League club Marine, he recognises that Fem's gamble was huge. And he wants to give back to the manager who helped him to grow this season. Time will tell if that was a good choice for those involved, but one thing is for certain, Pontus Fem and South China do not look to be resting on their laurels.

Club Announcement: David Ayala, Kwok Shung Ngai, Ng Wai Him, and Cheung Ho Yeung

South China are delighted to announce the arrival of four new players to the club. We have worked tirelessly in recruiting players who will add depth to the club.

David Ayala
David is a Mexican midfielder who joins us after his contract with Atlante expired. The 27-year-old is technically proficient, determined, with great vision.

Kwok Shung Ngai

Ngai joins as another defensive reinforcement for $228,000 from Southern District. A natural right-back, capable of playing in defensive midfield, the 27-year-old brings experience in the BOK Premier League. The Brisbane-born defender started his career with Boreham Wood in England, and returned to Hong Kong via Timok and Macva in Serbia. A tough tackler, he will provide competition and depth at fullback.

Ng Wai Him

The Hong Kong international joins the club on a free transfer after his Southern District contract expired. A solid and competent goalkeeper, his six seasons with Southern District saw him make 65 appearances and keep 10 clean sheets. He brings a wealth of experience with him, having played continental football for SD during his spell with them.

Cheung Ho Yeung

We are delighted to welcome one of the brightest prospects in Hong Kong football to the club, initially on loan. Yeung is a 17-year-old defender, capable of playing anywhere on the left side and competent at covering at right-back too. He has already been capped 6 times by Hong Kong, made 19 league appearances for Lee Man last season, scoring once and getting a hat-trick of assists. We have negotiated an option to purchase Yeung should we wish, and we look forward to seeing how he develops as the season unfolds.

Please help us welcome the latest addition to the Shaolin Temple!

Club Announcement: Jordan Akrigg

South China can confirm that a club-record bid for midfielder Jordan Akrigg has been accepted, and the player has officially confirmed his departure to Birmingham City. Having previously agreed a deal in principle with fellow Championship side Sunderland, Jordan initially rejected the move stating his wished to stay in Hong Kong.

The deal is worth an initial $480,000, with a sell-on clause included in the deal worth 40% of any profit made on the midfielder.

The club want to put on record our gratitude to Jordan for his hard work last season, our pride at his development, and our best wishes for his career in England.

As part of the deal, Birmingham have agreed to allow Jordan to stay on loan until the end of our domestic season, after which he will begin his time with Birmingham City.

PRE-SEASON REVIEW: SOUTH CHINA AA

Last season was one of unprecedented success for managerial rookie Pontus Fem and South China AA. Many predicted the side would have a good season, perhaps even a very good season. No-one predicted they would dominate all four competitions, returning a domestic quadruple and qualifying for the 2027/2028 AFC Champions League. But that is exactly what happened.

At the end of the season the manager acknowledged the challenges of replicating that season, as well as managing the new challenge of continental football. He claimed reinforcements would be needed, and that they would need to prioritise adding quality too.

Ahead of the new BOC Life Hong Kong Premier League season, we finish the pre-season review series by looking at the reigning champions South China.

Pre-season Fixtures

  • Wan Chai 1 - 3 South China (Craane, OG, Brito)
  • Club Wanderers 2 - 6 South China (Akrigg, Craane x2, Tam Yun Hing x2, Chung Wai Keung)
  • Double Flower 0 - 3 South China (Cheung Wai Fung, Ma Hei Wai, Joabe Brito)
  • South China 1 - 1 Kitchee (Craane)
  • South China 5 - 1 Lee Man (Craane, Brito x2, Ri Jin-Hyok, Akrigg)
  • South China 8 - 1 Happy Valley (Tam Yun Hing, Cheung Lik Hang x2, Ayala, Rodriguez, Craane, Parfait, Castro)
  • South China 6 - 0 (Tam Yun Hing x2, Mitchell, Cheung Lik Hang, Brito, Akrigg)

Key Transfers

In: Tse Ka Wing, Ng Wai Him, Choz Tsz Him, Kwok Shung Ngai, William Grierson, Cheung Ho Yeung, Tam Yun Hing, David Ayala, Gustavo Henrique - Total Spent: $226,954

Out: Jordan Akrigg (Birmingham City, $475,000), Ma Hei Wai (Kitchee, $258,622), Sze King Hei (Southern District, free), Takuya Tasaka (Okinawa, $36,946) - Total Sales: $770,568

Predictions

They are the absolute favourites for the league title (3-10 odds), and many expect them to dominate again. The question is, will this be a second season struggle for Fem? Will the continental football put too much of a strain on the squad? Or, will he be able to replicate the magic from last year?

Saturday, 14th August 2027 - South China AA vs. Kowloon City District (BOC Life Hong Kong Premier League)

After a busy preseason, the BOC Life Premier League is back underway! In the late kick off on match day one, reigning champions South China host Kowloon City. In the earlier games Biu Chun Rangers defeated Hong Kong FC 3-2, Kitchee beat Hong Kong U23s 2-1, and Resources Capital defeated Lee Man 1-0.

Pontus Fem hands league debuts to Tsk Ka Wing, Kwok Shung Ngai, Cheung Ho Yeung, and David Ayala.

And, despite a first-half of dominance, the teams go in for the break with the score 0-0.

There appears to have been a tactical switch up at half-time as South China look to be in a more attacking formation for the second half, but no personal changes yet. Who will draw first blood?

And it appears to be South China! In the 53rd minute Mitchell finds Rodriguez, who carries the ball forward unopposed. He slides an inch perfect pass back into Mitchell, on the edge of the Kowloon box. Mitchell lets the ball run across his body and launches an audacious first-time strike, that curls up high and over the keeper…but comes back off the inside of the post! Craane is the first to react, and hammers home for 1-0! Kowloon are appealing for offside, and it is being considered by the officials, who discuss it on the touchline…and they award the goal! South China lead.

Fem rings the changes on the hour mark, bringing on six fresh faces for the final 30 minutes. Will they have enough to capitalise? Or is there a twist in the tale yet?

The board goes up and reveals there will be 3 minutes of added time. South China have dominated, but failed to make the dominance count. Hui Ka Lok gets the ball on the halfway line as Kowloon break, he turns and launches it into the path of Rai. Castro attempts to challenge, and both miss the ball…Nitinho collects the loose ball 22 yards out, and strides at the South China box. He draws in two defenders, squares it to Chan Yat Fung on the edge of the box, and he finds the bottom corner! Late drama here! Kowloon have equalised!

And it is just too late for South China. They had more of the ball, had 27 shots and a 4.02 xG, but could only manage 9 on target. Kowloon made the most of their single shot of the game, and the spoils are shared!

They will have to face off against teams from both Japan and South Korea, with Ulsan being arguably one of the toughest opponents they could have drawn. Malaysian side Selangor will present an interesting challenge for the side from Hong Kong, but with many expecting Kashima Antlers and Ulsan Hyundai to prove far too much for Pontus Fem. At the very least, South China will see some very healthy gate receipts, and rewards of $422,241 (£40k) for a win and $84,400 (£8k) for a draw, if they can scrape a result or two together, they may well see some good financial gains from the tournament, as well as the chance to improve their reputation and standing in the game.

Saturday, 21st August 2027 - Hong Kong FC [2nd] vs. South China AA [7th] (BOC Life Hong Kong Premier League)

A disappointing opening day match for South China has been compounded by a mini-injury crisis. Tse Ka Wing did miss two days of training this week, but has overcome a slight knock to be available for selection today. However, Shiu Tsz Long is suspended, there are questions over whether Gustavo Henrique's fitness after he was injured in preseason, and Yue Yiixing, Siu Pak Lam and David Ayala have all been ruled out through injury. All three players look like they might miss up to three weeks for South China, which is a blow for Fem.

The club did announce early this week the signing of Hong Kong international midfielder Lai Pui Kei on a free deal, which will boost their midfield options. When asked whether he thought bringing in so many players might be disruptive to the club, Fem is quoted as saying, “There's always a risk of it. But we have to grow and add quality, and if that means recruiting that is what we'll do. It will be my job to balance the squad and the players.” When asked if the fans could expect even more signings Fem's response was a wry smile and “Perhaps”. We know there is interest in Lau Kwan Ching from North District, possibly on loan, and they have had Trinidadian striker Daniel Carr on trial in recent weeks. But, with limited spots available for non-Hong Kong players, Fem will need to weigh up the benefits of that signing.

As it is, he makes just one change to the starting lineup and drafts in Lai Pui Kei for his debut, in for the injured Ayala. We've seen Fem experiment with new formations ahead of the campaign, but it does look like a return to the 4-2-3-1 formation that brought them so much success last year, rather than the 4-3-3 lineup from last week. Henrique does make the bench, but will he see any game time today as they nurture him back from injury.

And the game does start slowly, and it takes some magic from Luke Mitchell to take the lead. A great throw-in routine sees Mitchell play a 1-2 with Kwok Shung Ngai, before peeling off his marker on the edge of the box, and darting into space in the area. He finds himself completely unmarked, gets the ball back, turns, and fires it across the goal and into the net to give South China the lead! 1-0!

And just a few minutes later, they have a second! Castro stands over a free kick near the right touchline. He plays it low to Lai Pui Kei, who turns and centers it to Craane on the edge of the box, one touch takes him past the Hong Kong defender, and he strikes it towards the goal. He gets lucky, as the ball deflects off a defender, and passes the keeper. Craane claims it, and South China have a 2-0 lead, and second in the league.

In the 40th minute, Hong Kong have it in the back of the net, but it is ruled out for offside. It's a warning to South China. Will they heed that warning?

Will they have to? Just seconds before the referee blows for half-time, South China have it deep in the opposition half. It's another throw-in, this time finding Akrigg. He turns inside, goes past his man, and is challenged on the edge of the box by a second defender. Akrigg gets the loose ball back, dashes to the byline instead this time, and pings a cross in to the six-yard box. Craane couldn't miss. He was two yards out and just taps it home. 3-0!

Most of the second-half has been fairly reserved. We do see more action in the 76th minute, after an absolute hail Mary of a pass from Hong Kong's left back, just outside his own area. Castro misjudges the bounce, and it lets Hong Kong in on goal. Castro can't get near the striker, and he fires home to give Hong Kong a glimmer of hope. Is it too little, too late?

South China do hold out, and run out 3-1 winners. Some brilliant performances from them, and they can look forward to their next game as another chance to build the momentum they will need for the season ahead.

Tuesday, 24th August 2027 - South China AA [4th] vs. Southern District [5th] (BOC Life Hong Kong Premier League)

South China are still without Yue Yixing, David Ayala, and Siu Pak Lam through injury, and after just two days since their last outing, Fem makes a number of changes to avoid further injuries. Chow Tsz Him, William Grierson and Shiu Tsz Long come into the defence, with Tam Yun Hing coming into midfield, and Matt Orr starting up front.

An early goal in one of the other kick offs means the pressure is on South China, as they drop into fifth place. There's still a lot of football, how will they respond?

Southern District give away a dangerous free kick 25-yards from goal and Lai Pui Kei stands over it. He begins his run up, and the ball curves towards the goal…OH MY WORD! SENSATIONAL FREE KICK! The ball comes off the inside of the post and finds the back of the net. What a way to open his South China account!

Southern District hold on to just the single goal disadvantage, but it is close. Just before the break, the referee does award South China a penalty, but the VAR review rules it out. They are yet to register a shot on target, and South China have been dominant. Fem makes two changes at the break. Who will get the next goal? As it stands, South China are 2nd in the league on goal difference.

Well, it takes less than a minute, but South China have another! Rodriguez carries the ball forward, and plays it back to Lai Pui Kei. He's got lots of time and space. He picks out the run of Gustavo Henrique, a half-time substitute who is looking to improve his match fitness, on the right wing. The Brazilian carries it to the by-line, and lays off a low cross. Cheung Lik Hang, another half-time sub, meets it, nutmegs the keeper, and gets himself a goal! That goal brings them level with Biu Chan Rangers at the top of the league. Can they get one more?

Fem makes another round of changes on the hour mark to freshen his side up. Lai Pui Kei really has been at the centre of everything today for South China. He receives a pass from Castro just outside of the centre circle, and turns to face Southern District's goal. He is able to find Cheung Lik Hang on the edge of the box…it's a stunning 30-yard pass! Hang has his back to goal, and turns under the pressure of two defenders. He's able to get passed both, and drive into the area. He shifts his body, and strikes the ball with his left foot…it curls into the far corner and he has his second of the day! And South China's third!

And just before the final whistle, South China claim a fourth! Shiu Tsz Long whips in an in-swinging corner from the left, which is cleared by Southern District, but only as far as Henrique on the edge of the box. He drives to the byline, and lifts a high cross in towards the back post which Cheung Lik Hang forces towards the goal with his head…the keeper dives on the ball and tries to claim it, and ends up carrying it over the goal line! It will go down as an own goal, but the only person who seems to care in red is Hang, who was convinced he had his hat-trick.

South China climb to the top of the table with a convincing 4-0 win! Two more leagues games for South China before their opening AFC Champions League game.

Sunday, 29th August 2027 - Resource Capital [6th] vs. South China AA [2nd] (BOC Life Hong Kong Premier League)

South China are without Christian Castro for their visit to Resources Capital, after the Uruguayan was ruled out for anywhere up to six weeks out injured for a twisted ankle. Fem makes a number of changes again, as the club look to win and return to the top of the league. We do see a full debut given to Daniel Carr, who leads the line from the start.

We have to wait 25 minutes for the first goal, but South China take the lead with a well-worked corner. A whipped corner is cleared by Resources Capital, but Lai Pui Kei collects the loose ball and finds Tam Yun Hing on the left. He works his way into the box, and fires home to give South China the advantage. There's a hint of offside, but the goal stands.

And less than a minute later South China make it two. Lai Pui Kei plays it to Rodriguez, who carries it forward. He plays it left to Cheung Ho Yeung, who fires in a cross from deep, the Resources Capital defenders fail to deal with the cross, and Daniel Carr fires in his first goal on the volley. 2-0! It's another tight offside call, but the officials decide it should stand too.

Daniel Carr has a second in the 50th minute, but he's well offside, and the score remains 2-0.

Just before the hour mark, Resources claw one back. A deep cross from the byline isn't cleared, and Yang Bailin heads into an empty net.

And the game runs out without another goal. South China are 2-1 winners, and return to the top of the league.

Thursday, 1st September 2027 - Wofoo Tai Po [9th] vs. South China AA [1st] (BOC Life Hong Kong Premier League)

Top scorer Jean-Jacques Craane joins the growing number of injuries at South China, which will mean Daniel Carr will lead the line for a second consecutive match. Lai Pui Kei, fresh off his player of the month win, will start in midfield alongside Au Man Lok, with Leung Chong Yip getting his first start of the campaign.

And despite the fairly balanced first-half, South China do manage to claim a lead in the 40th minute. Daniel Carr, with his second goal for South China, makes it 1-0. A deep cross from Yip finds Tam Yun Hing at the far post, who is beaten to the ball by Brian Fok. His headed clearance is only as far as Cheung Ho Yeung, and the South China fullback gets to the byline, and hits a low cross that flies across the 6-yard-box. The keeper misses it, and Carr is there to tap home. Easy for the Trinidadian.

And South China make it 2-0 in first-half stoppage time. They play it out well from the back, with Kei finding Yip on the half-way line. Yip hits a huge long ball into the path of Carr, who is able to break free of three Wofoo defenders, and find the bottom corner.

And it takes South China less than fifteen minutes in the second half to get a third. A loose Wofoo pass is intercepted on the half-way line, and Balduino finds Kei. He turns, looks up, and finds the substitute Gustavo Henrique free. He turns, drives at goal, and hits a fierce shot that finds the far corner. 3-0!

Wofoo do get themselves a lifeline eight minutes later, with a well worked corner routine. Lee Wang Him finds himself free on the edge of the box, in possession, and without a South China defender near to him. He claims one back for the homeside. 1-3!

It isn't enough for Wofoo, and South China do run out eventual winners. They have a three point lead at the top of the table, at least for now, with the early kickoff meaning they've played a game more than their counterparts. Their winning streak now sits at seventeen games. Up next? The arrival of Selangor for the opening AFC Champions League game.

Wednesday, 8th September 2027 - South China AA [3rd] vs. Selangor FC [2nd] (AFC Champions League Group G - Match Day One)

In the build-up to this game, Pontus Fem has been pragmatic when discussing the prospects of his club. They are one of the smallest teams in the competition, with some pundits suggesting the team getting a point would represent a real success. And with visits to Kashima and Ulsan ahead of them, Fem will have the chance to show Asia what he is capable of.

He makes a tactical change for the visit of the Malaysian side, swapping from the customary 4-2-3-1 he has used in the league to a 4-3-3 formation. He claims he wants to “win the midfield battle”, and feels that packing the midfield is the answer. Craane and Castro miss out through injury, and Ayala and Yue Yixing are doubts having recently returned from injury. Ayala makes the bench, but will Fem really risk the midfield talisman by rushing him back so soon?

It doesn't take long for group favourites, Ulsan, to take the lead in Japan, with Cho Young-Wook giving them the lead after just four minutes. The opening ten minutes in Malaysia is fairly end-to-end, but without a goal.

And we spoke too soon! After eighteen minutes Selangor have got the opener. It's a great short corner routine, and they play it around so well. It eventually finds Muhd Shazriman Hasnui on the edge of the box, and he fires home from 20 yards out. 1-0! Can South China get one back?

Oh! Pure inspiration! Selangor are almost able to hold on until half-time, but South China get a goal! Azizol tries to find Valdu, but William Grierson gets the interception and starts a South China breakaway. He finds Lau Kwan Ching, who turns and finds Joabe Brito, 30 yards from goal. Brito has space, brings it forward, shifts to his left foot, and powers into the box. Selangor try to shut him down, but he fires it low and past the keeper to make it 1-1! Game on!

On the hour, Fem makes a number of changes as Ayala and Henrique are brought on to try and change the game. Five substitutions can sometimes destablise things. Is this a mistake?

Fem proves himself again! Less than three minutes after the changes, and South China get a second! Brito lays it to Henrique on the right wing, who holds up the ball, turns, and crosses into the box…Cheung Lik Hang gets there first, and steers it home! 2-1 South China! His first touch of the ball after coming on is to head home, and it's his third goal of the season from four substitute appearances. What a supersub!

And in the 77th minute, South China get another! What a first day for them! Selangor clear a corner, but it's collected by Henrique, who plays it to Brito. Brito drives into the area, and he's completely unchallenged. He has all the time in the world to get the back onto his favoured left foot…and beats the keeper at the near post! 3-1 South China!

Ulsan add a second against Kashima, but as it stands, South China will end match day one as league leaders!

And Selangor have a lifeline in the 85th minute. Haizon finds Abdul Halim on the left, who makes a 30 yard run to the byline, and crosses low. Valdu meets it at the near post, and taps home to make it 3-2.

And South China put it beyond doubt in the 94th minute! Rodriguez carries the ball over the halfway line, finds Brito, who plays a brilliant lobbed pass into the path of Ayala. He plays a low cross into the six-yard box, and Luke Mitchell taps it in for South China's fourth!

#AFC2027 - Know Your Teams: South China

After their match day one victory, we preview the surprise package of the day from Hong Kong.

South China Athletic Association were the dominant force in Hong Kong football last season, and have managed to achieve something that has only happened twice in the last five seasons: get three points.

Hong Kong are led by Swedish manager, Pontus Fem. The victory yesterday means a huge amount to the club, both on a sporting level and a personal level.

After the game, Fem had this to say:

“The win is huge for us. It gives us confidence for our trips to Korea and Japan, and perhaps we can continue to demonstrate to Asia and the world what football in Hong Kong is capable of. We made some changes to the way we played, and showed we are capable of scoring goals. Brito was magnificent, as were every one of my players. I am so proud of them.”

A massive injection of prize money, a perfect ten performance from their brilliant Brazilian, and, for now at least, being able to say they are leading their group in the competition. The game wasn't without issues, as new signing Daniel Carr was ruled out for potentially seven weeks with a calf injury. Given Jean-Jacques Craane, Cristian Castro, and Cheung Wai Fai are also out injured, Fem has a balancing act to try and manage his squad in the games ahead.

Saturday, 11th September 2027 - South China AA [1st] vs. Kitchee [5th] (BOC Life Hong Kong Premier League)

Just three days removed from that sensational win against Selaganor, and Fem has an entirely different challenge on his hands. Kitchee, arguably the biggest team in Hong Kong, are struggling to find their feet. Despite their financial dominance, they are looking to find their way back to the top of the HK pyramid.

Cristian Castro, Daniel Carr, and Jean-Jacques Craane all miss out through injury. Yue Yixing and David Ayala are back in contention, but will need to be managed well to avoid further injuries. Fem names a side with eleven changes, with the trip to Ulsan midweek obviously a factor to consider. The biggest surprise is Ng Wai Him gets a debut in goal, whilst all the big guns are rested. It is a calculated risk, but with a 1300 mile journey to make in less than 48 hours, it is one they have to take. Can they extend their now 17 game unbeaten run?

And it is a rather drab first half, that does end with a Kitchee goal. In the 40th minute they break, Balduino fails to pick up his man, gets caught out of position, and Kitchee ruthlessly find the back of the net. South China are behind just before the break. And their lead at the top of the table now feels precarious.

A single change at half-time as the rusty Amadou Parfait makes way for the loanee, Lau Kwan Ching.

And South China take very little time to claw one back. It takes less three minutes after the restart for Luke Mitchell to get on a cross and find the net. South China are back on level terms!

In the 71st minute things swing back in Kitchee's favour. A clever corner routine allows Johns to be found on the edge of the box, unmarked. He takes a single touch, before curling one past Wai Him from 20 yards out. 2-1 to Kitchee.

A last roll of the dice in response to the Kitchee goal sees a few changes for South China, as they try and get back into the game.

And despite four minutes of added time, it isn't enough. A great goal from Johns for Kitchee gains his side the three points. The unbeaten run is over, and Fem loses just his fifth game in charge of South China.

Wednesday, 15th September 2027 - Ulsan Hyundai [2nd] vs. South China AA [1st] (AFC Champions League Group G - Match Day Two)

Off the back of their disappointing loss to Kitchee, South China face arguably the biggest challenge in recent memory. Ulsan are top of the league in South Korea, and their highest paid player earns almost as much as the entire South China locker room combined. It doesn't get much more “David and Goliath” than this.

South China make eleven changes, and name arguably their strongest side from those available. A return to the 4-3-3 from match day one, will they have enough to hold off Ulsan? Let's find out.

It takes just four minutes for Ulsan to find a way through. Lee Dong-Geong carries it down the right flank, plays a one-two with his fullback, before dancing through the defence and into the box. His curling shot rebounds off the inside of the post and finds Hernandes unmarked, who is able to tap it home for 1-0. There's a hint of offside about the goal, and the officials are checking the decision…they award the goal! 1-0 to Ulsan.

And the first half so far has been all Ulsan. It's still goalless in the other game of this group, so South China find themselves in second place for now.

Oh my word! After 23 minutes the seemingly impossible has happened. Brito plays a forward ball to Mitchell, who is challenged by Lee Dong-Geong, who prevents Mitchell from getting possession. The ball is loose, and Gustavo Henrique pounces on it. He's got so much space to move in to, with the Ulsan left back well out of position. He manages to power his way to the byline, and fires a low cross into the area. The keeper can't get there, and Kim Moon-Hwan tries to prevent Brito from getting on the end of the cross…and he steers it into his own net! It's an own goal, but the Shaolin Temple will not mind at all! 1-1!

And an entertaining first half ends. Ulsan have dominated, but they've only managed to get one of their eleven shots on target. It's surely only a matter of time until they get a second, but can Fem magic something up in the second half? Kashima Antlers have a two goal lead in Malaysia, but as things stand South China top the group on four points, with Ulsan in second and also on four points, Kashima in third on three points, and Selangor in fourth on zero points.

And the second half is all Ulsan, who are still unable to find a way through. Kashima get a third in Malaysia, but unless there's a winner here, they'll stay in third place.

Ulsan do get a second goal in the 80th minute, but it's ruled out for offside. South China breathe a sigh of relief. Ten minutes plus stoppage time remains.

And somehow they hold on! An incredible performance against a far, far larger side. Forget David and Goliath, this was Herculean! South China stay top of Group G!

Saturday, 18th September 2027 - North District [3rd] vs. South China [1st] (BOC Life Hong Kong Premier League)

After that incredible result midweek, South China return to action in the league and they need a win to keep pressure on Biu Chun Rangers. Rangers are in second place, but equal on points and with a game in hand. South China will be forced to make a number of changes, but we do see the return of David Ayala in midfield from the start as he continues his return from injury.

South China begin the game knowing that Biu Chun Rangers lost out to Lee Man earlier today, so a win for them will put some space between them and the chasing pack, even with the game in hand.

And it takes just four minutes for South China to find a way through. William Grierson launches a long ball forward, finds Tam Yun Hing on the left flank, whose low cross is met by Matt Orr, and he converts the chance. 1-0 South China!

On the half hour mark, North District get one back. Great football, as Wong Chun Hin receives it on the right hand side. He finds Wong Cho Sum, who is able to get a cross off, and Slattery is free in the box. It's an easy conversion for the forward, and North District bring the game back on level terms.

The sides go in at the break on even terms. South China will feel aggrieved, but they only have themselves to blame.

It takes just five minutes into the second half for South China to regain control. Put under pressure from a poor throw in, the turnover possession, and Au Man Lok is able to get control of the ball. He finds Mitchell, who can turn and run with it. He finds space, and punishes North by firing home from 20 yards into the far corner. It rebounds off the post and in. 2-1 South China!

South China get a third in the 72nd minute, but it is ruled out for offside. And with less than twenty minutes to play, can they put the result beyond doubt?

Yes they can! Just six minutes later they manage to get a third. Au Man Lok finds the returning Siu Pak Lam on the right. The fullback turns, and plays it backwards to Lai Pui Kei, 30 yards from goal. His forwards pass is to Gustavo Henrique, just inside the box, who plays a first-time pass to Akrigg, who hits a left footed drive that finds its way into the top corner. 3-1 South China!

And in the 85th minute they have a fourth. A freekick on the right flank is taken by Siu Pak Lam, who finds Nunez at the far post. He heads down to Balduino, who gets his first ever professional goal! 4-1!

A win for South China! They now have thirteen days until their next game, which is in the Sapling Cup against Kitchee.

Tuesday, 12th October 2027 - Biu Chun Rangers [2nd] vs. South China [1st] (BOC Life Hong Kong Premier League)

After a twenty-four day break, we are back in action here in Hong Kong, and it is a top of the table clash. South China remain three points clear at the top of the table, but Rangers have a game in hand. A win today for either side, and it is pressure on! It's been a busy three weeks with the close of the transfer window, and South China's only business was outgoing with Amadou Parfait and Siu Pak Lam leaving for a combined fee of $123,700, with the exception of 17-year old striker Chu Chung. Chung, who has signed from Club Hong Kong FC on a free transfer, has represented Hong Kong at Under 23 level. That brings South China's window to a close. They brought in eleven first team players (and two on loan), six youth team players, and sold seven players, spending $302,727 and recouping $917,211. Rumours are Fem has brought in a number of trialists for the youth team. Will they find a diamond in the rough?

There's a return to action for Cristian Castro following his injury, as he begins in defence. Jean-Jacques Craane and Daniel Carr both feature on the bench following their return from injury, as Fem attempts to help them rebuild fitness. Lai Pui Kei isn't risked after a knock in training, and Joabe Brito and Alberto Rodriguez are rested too. It's a busy ten days for South China, as they also have to host Kitchee in the Sapling Cup and visit Kashima next week. Rotation is key.

It takes less than 20 minutes for us to see a goal. Shiu Tsz Long takes a throw in for South China, finding Tam Yun Hing, who lays it off first-time to Ayala. Ayala drives forward, unchallenged, to the edge of the box, looks up, and fires home form 20 yards out. 1-0 South China!

And the first half ends with advantage to South China. What will the second half bring?

It takes less than five minutes from the restart to get another goal. Castro begins the move on the half-wary line, lifting a 40 yard pass into the path of Luke Mitchell on the edge of the area. He takes it wide, turns, and fires a low cross in that is met by Tam Yun Hing, who finds the net. 2-0 South China!

And the game does finish 2-0 to South China. For now, they have a six point advantage over Biu Chun Rangers. They were also able to give much needed minutes to those returning players, with Carr, Craane, Henrique, Orr, Castro, and Shung Ngai all getting decent minutes under their belts.

Up next, Kitchee in the Sapling Cup.

Friday, 15th October 2027 - South China vs. Resources Capital (Sapling Cup Group A - Match Day One)

Fem makes five changes from the team that beat Biu Chun Rangers, as he faces off against Kitchee for the second time inside a few weeks. Ng Wai Him, Yue Yixing, Nunez, Cheung Ho Yeung, and Craane all start for South China. Last time Kitchee were victorious, but with a visit to Kashima on the horizon, Fem really does need to manage his team to get through this run of fixtures. Eastern AA have already won their opening game in the group, and sit top of the league, but after the next hour and a half, who will reign supreme?

It takes just seventeen minutes for South China to find a way through. Cheung Ho Yeung carries the ball forward, turns at the touchline, and finds Rodriguez with a good pass. The Mexican slides a through ball into the path of Tam Yun Hing, who is in on goal and behind the defence now, with only the keeper to beat. And he finds the far corner! It's advantage South China!

And six minutes later they have a second! Yixing finds Rodriguez, just inside the Kitchee half. He brings it forward at least ten yards, before finding Akrigg with a great pass. Jordan Akrigg draws in two defenders, before firing off a quick pass to Luke Mitchell, who gets in behind the Kitchee defence. A first time strike beats the keeper, and South China have a two goal lead!

And what a period for South China! Just before the half hour mark, and they've managed to get a third in twelve minutes! A deep cross from Ho Yeung floats over everyone, and Akrigg gets on the end of the loose ball. He turns inside, loses his man, and finds Ayala on the edge of the box. It's a clever exchange of passes that means Akrigg is into the box, beyond his man, and on his favoured left foot. And he is able to curl it into the far post, and get a third! Surely this tie is finished!

Or is it?! Three minutes later and Kitchee get one back. Akrigg loses possession, and Jay Haddow is able to launch a long ball forward. Lam Wing Cheong is through on goal, and Ng Wei Him is in no-man's land as he tries to close down the striker. It's an easy goal from 25 yards as the Kitchee player has an open goal to aim at, and little in the way of a defensive challenge. Poor, poor defending there, and it's 3-1.

An entertaining half of football ends. Will we be in for more of the same? Or will South China manage the game well enough to secure the win?

Well, that was a game of two halves. Very little to report on from the second forty-five minutes. South China pick up the win, reclaim the bragging rights, and look forward to the journey to Japan for their third AFC Champions League game.

AFC Champions League Elite Stats, 2025-26 Season - ESPN (UK)

Wednesday, 20th October 2027 - Kashima Antlers [3rd] vs. South China AA [2nd] (AFC Champions League Group G - Match Day Three)

And the challenges for South China keep coming. A trip to Japan to face the J1 League side presents South China with a huge mountain to overcome. One team is worth an estimated £7,420, the other £24m. If Ulsan represented David and Goliath, Kashima is David vs. Mr and Mrs Goliath's quintuplets.

Fem opts for the 4-3-3 formation he has played in the other two group games as he looks to find enough of a balance to avoid defeat.

Kashima start strongly, and South China must face an initially battle to avoid conceding. Just inside five minutes, Ayala loses possession, and it allows Kashima the chance to score. They are wasteful, and send a warning to South China. This could be a long day for Tse Ka Wing.

It doesn't take long for Kashima to get another chance. A great cross finds Yuma Suzuki, who rises highest to win the header. But his headed chance rattles off the crossbar, and it's cleared out for a corner.

South China buck the trend after eleven minutes, with Alberto Rodriguez lifting a brilliant lofted pass into the path of Matt Orr. But Orr fires his volley high and well over the crossbar. He looks frustrated! That was an important chance, and maybe one of the few they'll get today.

South China get another chance after seventeen minutes. Shiu Tsz Long launches a huge, hopeful forward pass from the halfway line. Carr and Orr chase, but they are outnumbered, and Kashima's keeper gets there first. He takes control of the ball, and opts to dribble with it rather than pass. He tries to find out the left back, Anzai…YOU DO NOT PASS ACROSS THE GOAL! Lai Pui Kei reacts much, much faster and intercepts the pass. He has an open net and it is a simple finish! Against the odds, South China have the lead!

Kashima need to regroup and quickly!

In the 38th minute they get their chance of an equaliser. A foul by South China gives Kashima a penalty, and Tourraine is favourite to get his team back into the game. WHAT A SAVE! Tse Ka Wing guesses right, and manages to get a hand to the penalty! It's pushed wide, collected by Chow Tsz Him and South China can clear.

And that's all she wrote for the first half. South China have a brilliant lead! Can they hold out for another 45 minutes?

Kashima take just two minutes after the restart to get their equaliser. Koki Hinokio launches a deep cross to the far post, which is headed back into the danger zone by Yoshioka. It's then met by Suzuki, who finishes and gets Kashima back into the game.

And it takes until the 80th minute for Kashima to get another. It's been a brave performance from South China, but Kashima are just too much for them. Toro finds Perotti in the box, who holds off the challenge and plays in Egawa. He fires home a fierce shot to give Kashima the lead.

South China survive a late scare, but are unable to find another chance. Kashima win, and take second spot in the league.

Saturday, 23rd October 2027 - South China [1st] vs. Eastern AA [7th] (BOC Life Hong Kong Premier League)

Just a few days after the huge game in Japan, South China return to action in the BOC Premier League. Fem makes eleven changes to the side that narrowly lost to Kashima. They are still without Brito, Henrique is not cleared for action, and Daniel Carr is also not risked. The football is coming thick and fast for South China, so rotation is necessary. They have Kowloon City in the Senior Shield in a week, and the visit of Ulsan at the start of November. Fem will need the entire squad at his disposal to manage this run, so this rotation is a calculated risk.

A risk that might not pay off. It takes Eastern less than two minutes to take the lead. Wong Ho Chun powers past Cheung Ho Yeung, and stands up a huge cross into the area. That must be a forty or fifty yard ball! Rajnovic is free in the box and he taps home. 1-0 to Eastern AA! That's a blow to South China. They've played two more games than Kitchee in second place, and now hold just a five point lead. They'll need to dig deep to try and regain their advantage, or else the pressure will be one.

It doesn't take long at all! The Sunderland-bound Akrigg is the hero! A failed clearance by Tisma results in a loose ball. It's collected by Cheung Ho Yeung, and the youngster gets past his man. He launches a big cross into the box, and Akrigg wins the header, and nods it in! 1-1! Six minutes played. Game on!

What an opening eight minutes! A corner for South China is taken by Tam Yun Hing. Leon Jones attempts to clear it, but Yue Yixing is first to the looping ball on the edge of the box. He fires a volley at goal, but it rebounds and deflects off Felipe Sa, and goes in. It's an own goal! 2-1 South China.

End to end stuff here! Thirty-three gone, and Eastern AA are back on level terms. Ng Yu Hei whips a corner in, and Tisma wins the header, and finds Leon Jones, who gets the goal! 2-2!

What a game! Forty gone and Eastern AA have the lead again! Rajnovic finds Felipe Sa as Eastern AA break. He carries it and finds the run of Hall, who gets in behind the defence. He's free of his man, and one-on-one with the keeper. It's an easy finish, and Eastern AA have the lead again. 3-2!

An exhilarating first half ends with Eastern AA in the lead. South China just look stunned. How will they respond in the second half?

A triple change at the break for South China, as Fem looks for something more from his team. Ayala, Orr and Cheung Lik Hang are on for the disappointing Kwan Ching, Yun Hing, and Craane. Will it be enough?

You hate to see it. Just eight minutes after the restart, and David Ayala goes down injured. He won't be able to continue, and this is a huge blow for South China. Lai Pui Kei replaces him, and they are left with one remaining substitute.

And despite their dominance, South China can't get another goal. It's another loss for Fem's men, and a disappointing performance to boot.
