Portuguese football has been dealt a severe blow with the official announcement that Boavista Futebol Clube, one of the five historic champions of the Primeira Liga, has been relegated to the fifth division, having failed to register in any of the country's professional or semi-professional leagues.

After being relegated to the second division after finishing last in the 2024/25 season—following a tough 4-1 defeat to Arouca on May 17—the club faced serious financial and administrative problems that prevented its registration in Liga Portugal 2.
