Went up 2-0 in the first half, absoulute cruising and in the second half we kept on inviting them all the team and really didn't looked comfortable at all. Leon Barnett exposed so often and for some strange reason he reminds me of Efe Sodje for not being any comfy with the ball at all and is clearly limite din more than one way but shows great courage and commitment. However, I believe under Flitcroft we would have blown that, so I take a win as dirty as they come in this situation. Sadly, Charlton and Northampton dropped all three points to our relegation rivals in Shrewsbury and Owdum, so literally no ground won BUT our other rivals and next opponents on Saturday at home Gillingham blew against another relegation rival in Swindon at home, so their confidence must have taken a right hammering.
By the way: Watch out for our young lad Callum Styles! This lad will be going places. So comfortable with the ball and a very intelligent player, doesn't do childish nonsense or stupid dribblings just to show off. Tired a bit in the second half but the lad is only 16, so you'll hear more of him very very soon I think!
As for us, as mentioned, Gillingham at home on Saturday will be the next end game, if you like so we need to carry the momentum and ride the wave of optimism for as long as possible!

Hopefully used up your quota of luck with that Diame goal! That said, you make your own luck with things like that from time to time.

Clearly Lady Luck still hasn't used up the full quota yet. Which for us is a rarity.
It does look like Ritchie trips himself up, although we've had 5/6 more concrete penalties turned down at various points this season. Second does look fair - Ward doesn't get 2 hands firmly on it.

In thinking about it, the issue with our penalty was less the foul by Wells - which I took a few views to spot - and more the possible handball by Shelvey in the build-up. But whatever. Either way the fact we haven't had a penalty since the reverse fixture against the Terriers (I think) means we were due luck like that.
So... 11 clear of 3rd and thanks to Forest mauling Brighton, 5 of 2nd. Path's opened up a bit now.

Yeah, their last two results have confirmed that (if ever there was any doubt).
Two 1-0 wins in a row for us now, 7 points out of 9 under Mowbray. One goal conceded. Really happy with how it's going under him so far, get the defence organised and go from there, that's how you do it.

First one's never seen a penalty. Zero contact, trips himself up. Changes the game. Handball in the build-up too, even if we didn't get it away as we should have. Second should be disallowed - as Ward has the ball in one hand and in his control. This myth about two hands seems to have arisen in the same way as 'last man' for professional fouls the actual law (which Mr East and his hopeless assistants may wish to read) is as follows:
A goalkeeper is considered to be in control of the ball when:
-the ball is between the hands or between the hand and any surface (e.g. ground, own body) or by touching it with any part of the hands or arms except if the ball rebounds accidentally from the goalkeeper or the goalkeeper has made a save
-holding the ball in the outstretched open hand
-bouncing it on the ground or throwing it in the air
A goalkeeper cannot be challenged by an opponent when in control of the ball with the hands.
As Ward was grasping the ball, he's deemed to be in control and therefore the goal should not stand as Murphy fouls him (soft as it may seem).
Always hard coming back from having two goals gifted to the opposition by abysmal decisions. Our penalty was soft, granted, but a million times more a penalty than Newcastle's. Overall we played well. Just couldn't get behind a defence that dropped deep, defended well and didn't allow us time and space in the danger area. Third goal was entirely of our own making - why we sent Coleman up then is beyond me. Gave the scoreline a gloss that Newcastle just didn't deserve. But the game was taken away from us in the first half-hour and it was always going to be difficult.

Even accounting for the misconception of hands on the ball, I don't think Ward fully had the ball under control. He seems to try to control what is probably a slippery ball by bringing it into his chest but ends up dragging it against Murphy's standing foot, which leads to the ball pinging off it and away, and it looks like a challenge Murphy is entitled to make. Saying that, as few players challenge the keeper in such a fashion that Murphy did anymore, I was surprised in real time that it wasn't flagged, and I can accept its one I'd be annoyed by. Hefele on the line could've done better, mind.
Its not exactly news the refereeing standard is shit tbf. I thought it was bad in the Prem - and clearly the shenanigans at Man U and Swansea hasn't helped - but fuck me there's been some doozies in the Championship (and lower) this season.

Maybe for him its best to try the 2nd tier after how bad Palace's league form was in 2016, but it'll most probably go the same way - promotion form in half of next season, relegation form in the rest.

It was a year since he took over (and lost) - The announcer played 'La Bamba' before kick off, while some cunt with a microphone instructed us to 'Make some noise for Rafa' - And the Chronicle / Newcastle seem to be making 'Until Rafa I was never happy' - a club slogan.
But y'know - predictable, negative tactics - an attacking trio offering zero threat going, forward, Colback picking up 4 men, ropey defending and punting long balls for a short striker to challenge for.
While the Chronicle and some fans do amazing mental gymnastics to absolve Benitez of any blame what so ever. Chronicle are praising Benitez for identifying that Tom Cairney was a good player. - If only we signed Cairney, Hogan, Snodgrass, Brady and McCarthy to prevent the possibility of a player we've ever been linked with having a good game against us.
Also Newcastle now seem to have organised fan groups set up to slate other fans. And blame fans for defeats. - I agree that the atmosphere is shite and has been for years - but back under Pardew - it was 'long suffering fans who had simply had enough of being 8th and had the patience of Saints for protesting finishing 8th in the league.' Under Benitez there traitors to the Rafaloution who shouldn't be allowed back.
Anyway we were murdered today - If we finish 3rd and Fulham take 6th - I genuinely believe Benitez would set them up in the exact same way with the exact same result in the playoffs.
Just rewatched the highlights - Shelvey culpable for all three goals - by literally letting his man go and not closing down. The absolute waste of space. Makes Moussa Sissoko look like Bert Trautmann.

At this point, we kinda know we're set up with a defensive focus for the majority of games, when certain games are more ideal for that (Huddersfield away) than others (Reading away was dull and Fulham was a disaster). I'm aware we lack forward assertion, and certainly its a curious one Daryl Murphy commented he felt the team let Fulham have too much of the ball. Still, we have a few winnable fixtures in a row now. So all's not lost just yet, and with any luck the players will get a suitable kick up the arse as a reward for this disaster.
With the fans, it is what it is. But again, its perspective - Pardew had his good days and bad days, as is everyone before and after. I like Benitez, but we're far too aware this team is not immune to shit games and rarely seem to know how to respond to conceding the opening goal. But at this point with everything so finely balanced in a division that is a lot stronger than it was in 2009-10, is it really worth turning every individual error into an "Oh fuck we're not going up we were shit all along!" moment?
Meanwhile, sacking season seems to have kicked in, with Norwich then followed by Derby sacking McClaren (again) and Wigan sacking Warren Joyce... of those two, I'm not sure either were that good an appointment in the first place. Also surely someone has to get Derby up sometime before the Candy Crush money stops?

And Clement, Silva, Allardyce, Advocaat, Di Canio, Poyet, Pardew, Shakespeare have all seemed to make at least some sort of impact a lot quicker....
Nah Shelvey is absolute poison. Absolute waste of time. It's not about playing badly, it's about basically not trying.

Was desperate for a Huddersfield win (the game didn't only have an impact at the top of the table, Sky Sports), but if we keep up our decent form we should.....should being the key word.....be okay.
