Rangers of Glasgow

Good afternoon/evening,

The fall of The Gers rocked football across the world. I for one never expected the Scottish FA to take such a hard stand against one of their two biggest clubs. I never expected the rest of the Scottish Premiership to accept and, indeed, support the removal of one of the two clubs whose visits to their stadiums injected their fledgeling clubs with cash every time. I never expected that the FA would allow Goliath to fall and, in so doing, predictably hand the league over to the Old Firm rivals across town. But there we are. I will be taking control of Rangers in June of 2013 and trying to bring them back to the pinnacle of Scottish football and, eventually, to succeed at the Champions' League.

Rangers hire new manager, Gillies

The Glasgow Rangers have hired their new manager following the departure of Ally McCoist and it's the man many expected to take the helm: former Scotland International and Rangers defender, Euan Gillies.



Gillies has been brought in to take control of a strong Rangers squad who are poised to gain promotion for the second straight season. Rangers supporters will hope that their new gaffer's tenure will be one that sees Rangers propelled back to the top of Scottish football quickly and with flair, but the club's Chairman, David Somers, will be mindful of the balance sheet and will likely exercise tight control over the money available to the manager.

"We are in a position, now, where we can gain promotion and I would fully expect us to do so," said Somers during the press conference which re-introduced the Rangers man. "However, we must be vigilant that we are not over-spending in the pursuit of excellence. We've got to remember that we are looking to bring a club out of financial insolvency and the Board of Directors is very hopeful that we can create a financial and footballing environment that is conducive to long-term success."

Gillies concurred: "I have discussed a long-term plan with David and the others and we all agree that we can't spend ourselves silly in these early years of recovery. I'm confident that the current squad is very strong and in a position to gain promotion immediately this year -- in that respect, Ally has done a great job before me -- and I believe that this means that we can afford to hold off on spending great sums of money in the next few years. Really that's out of the question."

The new manager had a playing career that spanned 18 years including 12 years at Rangers and 6 years at London's Tottenham Hotspur. He then spent three years coaching with West Brom Albion and another six years as a coach and then assistant manager at Nottingham Forrest. This represents his first role as the gaffer at a club but he told reporters that he is confident that he has what it takes to spark a renewal for The Gers: "I'm intimately aware of the inner workings of the club -- I've been following and supporting Rangers since I was a wee lad. I've had experience on the pitch and on the touchline at some notable clubs in England and I'm pleased to now be back home in Glasgow where I can help my club return to prominence and, hopefully, get even higher than we have already done in the past."

The club's supporters group said they are happy to see a man who is so well-known to the Teddy Bears at the helm and look forward to his tenure.

Rangers' backroom staff departures

Rangers part ways with several members of the backroom staff including Assistant Manager, Kenny McDowall.



Rangers have announced that several members of their backroom staff have agreed to part ways with the club in order to allow the new manager, Euan Gillies, to bring in his own team. Amongst the names of those who've agreed to terminate their contract is Assistant Manager Kenny McDowall, and Chief Scout Sandy Jardine.

McDowall enjoyed a good working relationship with the club's former Manager, Ally McCoist, and had been at the club since 2007. He leaves Rangers now to pursue a manager's role elsewhere. "I have nothing but positive things to say about Rangers, the club, the people, and their new manager, Euan who spoke to me personally about his decision to look elsewhere for an Assistant Manager. We both agreed it was for the best."

Jardine, a club legend, has agreed to leave as Chief Scout and will retire from scouting. "Rangers runs in my blood and I will always be a supporter of the club and the people who are there. It became clear to me that it was time for me to pass the reins on to a new group and allow Euan to exercise control over the direction this club takes. I have faith in him and look forward to seeing his progress and the club's."

Other names that join McDowall and Jardine are the club's fitness coach, Jamie Ramsden, and head physiotherapist, Steve Walker. It is widely expected that Rangers is on the look-out for new staff members to come and join Gillies in shaping the club's future.

When asked about releasing two big names at the club, Gillies said that McDowall and Jardine have served this club well in the past and that he is hopeful that both men will have a future at the club in other roles. "Kenny and Sandy are obviously very highly respected among the Gers and I hope we can work something out to have them involved in the future, but the present requires a change in direction and that's what I'm overseeing -- it's why I've been brought in."

Rangers trump Ayr in Challenge Cup

The Gers overcame a two goal deficit to secure victory in Scottish Challenge Cup.



Rangers fans are cautiously optimistic following their team's victory against Ayr United in the Challenge Cup yesterday. Although Rangers secured victory, they only managed to do it after going down 2-0 in the 29th minute following Michael McGowan's second goal.

Rangers drew within one two minutes later when the young defender Chris Hagerty connected with a David Templeton cross and hit the back of the net. The Gers wouldn't have to wait until the second half to get level, as Dean Shiels managed to score a headed goal in the 41st minute.

When they came out of the dressings rooms at half time, Rangers looked like a team possessed creating several chances to score before Dean Shiels finally netted his second goal from the left flank and put the Rangers ahead in the 51st minute. The team's defense took over from there and shut up shop in front of Gallacher to ensure that the Gers would move on in the competition.

"I was rather disappointed that we had created that hole for ourselves to dig out of," said Euan Gillies. "I didn't expect to have to work that hard for a victory in this match and I think the lads are all as disappointed as I am by that. We will need to do better in future."

The Board of Rangers can confirm that approximately 35,000 season tickets have been sold for the club's forthcoming League One campaign.

The sales numbers represent a reduction in the requirement for short term financing as highlighted by the Business Review Summary published on April 25, 2013, particularly given the updated pricing scheme for the 2013/2014 season. Application for new season tickets opened a month ago and have been well received. There are still opportunities to apply for season tickets for the coming season, although they are going quickly. The club very much looks forward to welcoming more supporters back for our continued pursuit of top-level Scottish football, and we are sure that this season will be a successful one.

In other news, the club drew Stirling in the Scottish Cup's second round draw. That fixture will take place on Saturday July 3, 2013. Manager Euan Gillies said that "we are looking forward to making amends for our poor performance in the last match against Ayr. The boys want to make up for it."
