Former Liverpool and Nottingham Forest striker, now football pundit and talksport host Stan Collymore, is set to become the new manager of Stafford Rangers. Collymore, who began his professional career at the Staffordshire based, will take over at the Northern Premier (DS1) division side.
This move has been seen as a positive move by the fans, Karl Tipton from the clubs supporters association “the fans are delighted and are hoping Stan’s profile can help the club kick on’. Although there are some fans who are sceptical of Collymore’s out spoken and bullish manner.
Collymore, who was a talented footballer and seen by many, as another English talent who never quite reached the peak of his footballing ability, albeit making 295 league apps and scoring 99 within his playing career. Collymore was capped by England 3 times during his journey man career, playing for the likes of Liverpool, Aston Villa, Nottingham Forest, Leicester and Fulham. There had been off field sagas during Collymore’s playing career, a colourful character and known for having bullish manner, never afraid to voice his opinions, saw Collymore become a footballing maverick, but his passion and knowledge of the game is clear to see…love him or hate him, he is a great character within the game.
When speaking with club chairman John Bromley, Bromley stated “these are exciting times for the club and one the fans can enjoy”.
The club will present Stan Collymore to the media tomorrow

John Bromley addressed the national media, alongside Stan Collymore at Marston Rd, whereby press normally see a handful of media at best, yet today saw TV and journalists from all over the country.
With an a ray of questions being fired at Collymore, from Football, twitter, talksport to Ulrika, one journalist had ask the former Liverpool ace ‘what is your relationship now with Ulrika ?’ Collymore responds ‘are we here to talk about football or not’. Questions then moved on to football, when asked about his management style Collymore replied ‘I want 100% from the lads and they will get that from me, no one will be hiding and accountability is key. ‘I want men and leaders in my team’, ‘if I feel there are people not up to the mark, then….they will go’
Questioning led to playing style, with Collymore saying’ we want to score goals and entertain the fans, we must see commitment and passion’. Collymore was then asked, why Stafford Rangers? And why so low is the footballing pyramid? Collymore stating ‘Why not Stafford, I was born in Stone, a few miles down the road and started my career here, it’s not such a leap is it?!? Questioning then led to ambitions within his management career, ‘I want to focus on Stafford and make a start on my coaching badges. Birmingham based journalists probing about a possible move to Villa in the future, Collymore a lifelong Villa Fan replied ‘I am here now and who knows down the line.
Collymore will continue with some light Radio work at talksport, but has identified that this may well reduce throughout his time a Stafford Rangers. Collymore came across as confident and handle the press extremely well, this skill set should come in handy within his managerial career, the players will meet Collymore Monday…..good luck lads. There is no doubt that this is a huge task for Stan Collymore and one we will watch intently.
