AIK End Alm's Reign

After 3 seasons without a trophy to speak of, AIK's Chairman Johan Strömberg decided it was time for a change at the helm. Andreas Alm was sacked after just under 3 years with the club, the former player who scored 20 goals in his time with the club, failed to bring similar success at a managerial level despite a very good win ratio.

Gnaget fans will now be pondering who may take over at Friends Arena knowing they are in desperate need for some success. Alm left a statement when leaving the ground this afternoon stating, "It was a pleasure to manage a club that were very important to me. I know I did not provide the success maybe fans & the board wanted but under the circumstances I thought I did well"

Alm went on to say "Obviously I am disappointed and I feel that this upcoming season would of been the one but Mr. Strömberg has made his choice and I have to accept it. I now move on and look to get away from for football for a while, although I will have a keen eye on this place & wish my successor all the best, because this club deserves it."

Rumors are rife at the moment of who will take over at AIK but we expect some movement in the coming days and will be keenly following this story as it unfolds.

Gnaget show discontent at Unproven Manager's Appointment

4 Days after the dismissal of Andreas Alm the AIK Board unveiled the new man they have chosen to take the club forward. Luke Ryan joins as virtual unknown, the 26 year old, who has 7 years on the Sunday League scene as player signs at his first ever professional team. After sustaining injury in 2009, which inevitably ended Ryan's career, he ventured into management where he had some success earning a local trophy in Leicester.

However he has now been thrown into a big challenge, beyond anything he would be used to, controlling and running an aspiring European force. Swedish football may not be ranked highly in terms of quality but fans across the country will now be watching with keen eyes due to the fact that not many English managers have had success here.

Roy Hodgson being the most notable man to take control on Swedish soil, where he enjoyed League title success with Halmstads and an amazing 5 titles with Malmo FF, which also included a huge victory over Inter Milan in the 1990 European Cup competition.

Fans have apparently questioned the decision to ignore candidates with more lucrative CV's but the board defended there actions and called for backing from the fans. Johan Strömberg stated "We understand the fans may not be comfortable with this decision but it is not one we have taken lightly."

"The board, staff and myself had a number of meetings with Luke and we are delighted to appoint him our new manager. There is talent here and we have a solid base for him to work with, we want good attacking football and a keen intent to build through youth & Mr. Ryan ticks all the boxes in relation to our expectations."

Luke Ryan addressed media assuring fans he would not let them down. "I understand where I have come from, people will not know who I am or my methods but that gives me an edge. I will work as hard as I can to make sure this club stands tall with silverware hoisted high over heads once more."

"This is not going to be an overnight job, fans need to be patient and know we are working as hard as possible to achieve our goals. We have some good players here and the youth is very encouraging. I am looking forward to getting started!.

Well it has been interesting few days at Friends Arena, in time we will tell if this appointment flops or provides the shock of the century. We ask you to follow us throughout the season as this story unfolds.

April 2013

Well after taking my first job in football, it was clear that I was up against it from the start. I go into this opening month hoping to take a fledgling Scandinavian side and turn them into a contender on the European stage.

Realistically the club does not have a lot of money to work but the youth prospects should help me build a team to help challenge for silverware. We are looking to challenge for the league title and then see where we stand as other challenges appear.

Anyway this month it was a mixture of fixtures, the squad will be challenged with a number of Pre-Season Friendlies plus the beginning of the Swedish Cup and Allsvenskan season. Here are the fixtures for this opening month:-

(PSF) AIK Under-21's (H) - The Friendlies begin as we test the squad's core
(PSF) FC Svendborg (A) - We then travel to Denmark to face one of its smaller clubs
(PSF) HB Koge (A) - Still in Denmark we face a First Division side looking for a win
(SCGS) BK Olympic (A) - The Swedish Cup kicks off with our first group stage match
(PSF) Nordvest FC (A) - We then resume our tour of Denmark facing another Danish minnow
(SCGS) Jonkopings Sodra (H) - Our first home domestic clash pits us against a tricky side
(PSF) Hvidovre (A) - The final pre-season friendly of the campaign
(SA) IFK Goteborg (A) - The Allsvenskan kicks off as we face one of our fiercest rivals on opening day

http://i58.tinypic.com/2natlkh.jpg

Pre-Season Friendly
vs. AIK Under-21's (Won 5-1)

The senior team produced a fine display to overcome the young up and comers at Friends Arena. Celso Borges proved to be the man of the match bagging 2 goals and 2 assists.

Kennedy Igboananike, Niclas Eliasson & Robin Quaison rounded off the scoring. Mikael Damberg scored a consolation effort with the score at 3-0.

Pre-Season Friendly
vs. FC Svendborg (Won 3-2)

AIK managed to edge a tight affair in the opening game from their tour of Denmark this pre-season. Robin Quaison & Niklas Backman had given the away side a 2 goal cushion before the break but a goal just after the break from Casper Kruse made things a little more interesting.

Celso Borges went on to score the clincher just after the hour but Svendborg would go onto score 3 minutes from time through Magnus Bech, ultimately though the Swedish side held out for victory.

Pre-Season Friendly
vs. HB Koge (Won 2-0)

AIK ran out comfortable winners in Denmark bagging 2 goals in the final 15 minutes against HB Koge. The home sides resilience finally broke as Martin Lorentzson & Kennedy Igboananike both scored the goals for the away side.

Swedish Cup Group 4
vs. BK Olympic (Won 4-0)

It was promising start to the Swedish Cup campaign as Luke Ryan's side made light work of non league BK Olympic. Celso Borges starred bagging an impressive hat-trick before Kennedy Igboananike put away a well placed shot to round off the result.

Pre-Season Friendly
vs. Nordvest FC (Won 8-1)

Danish First Division side Nordvest had no answer to the attacking threat posed by their Swedish opponents. Celso Borges continued his fine scoring form with 4 goals for his team, second behind him was Nabil Bahoui who bagged himself an impressive hat-trick.

Niclas Eliasson rounded off the scoring for AIK after Thomas Jensen scored for the home side with the scores at 5-0.

Swedish Cup Group 4
vs. Jonkopings Sodra (Won 2-0)

AIK continued their fine winning form with a comfortable win at Friends Arena in the Swedish Cup. Goals either side of half time from Celso Borges & Kennedy Igboananike ensured that Gnaget have a solid chance of qualifying for the knockout stages.

Pre-Season Friendly
vs. Hvidovre (Won 5-0)

The tour of Denmark ended in empathic style for Ryan's AIK side as they dominated against Hvidovre. Celso Borges & Kennedy Igboananike both helped themselves to a brace whilst youngster Robin Quaison did himself no harm bagging a goal in the win.

Swedish Cup Group 4
vs. Mjallby (Lost 2-1)

Frustration was clear to be seen as Luke Ryan watched his side fail to qualify for the knockout stages of the Swedish Cup. Mjallby leapfrogged into the top spot of the group after coming from behind to win at Friends Arena.

Niclas Eliasson had given the home side the lead just after half time but goals in the final 15 minutes from Patrik Ingelsten & Anton Dahlstrom condemned AIK to their first defeat under their new English manager.

Ryan was especially annoyed before the game as 3 of his key players were missing from the starting line up. Celso Borges, Ibrahim Moro & Ebenezer Ofori were all away on international duty and unavailable for selection.

Swedish Allsvenskan
vs. IFK Goteborg (Won 4-0)

AIK sent their fans home with beaming smiles as they destroyed their fierce rivals Goteborg on the opening day of the season. Robin Quaison produced a sensational display pulling the strings for his side, including scoring 2 goals.

Nabil Bahoui and Kennedy Igboananike added to the scoreline late in the second half. It was a fine display and the perfect way to open the season.

http://i59.tinypic.com/a12sci.jpg

Robin Quaison came of age for his side this month

http://i62.tinypic.com/15ewlyc.jpg

It has been an encouraging month of results for the team. The pre-season went well as we built some forward momentum and took a winning mentality into the Swedish Cup games that we won, ultimately we were pipped on the final day due to the useless international friendlies but now we can focus on the league.

It was a tremendous start to the Allsvenskan campaign, to beat one of your fierce rivals so convincingly is a big statement. Plus some of our key players showed some top displays, especially the likes of Celso Borges & Robin Quaison.

It's early days but if we keep up the same level of performance, we could be in for a successful season.

May 2013

Moving into March I was hoping to see the team build on the first league win at Goteborg. Beating a fierce rival should be the perfect incentive to kick on and really show the rest of the division we mean business. A lot of key players started to shine through last month, including the youth so it was all very encouraging

However there were some tough fixtures ahead it was clear we would have to be at our best to claim the results we wanted.

(SA) Gefle IF FF (H) - Our first home game of the campaign against a side predicted to have a mediocre season
(SA) IFK Norrkoping FK (A) - A trip to Norrkoping is never easy, the media have tipped them to make a title challenge
(SA) IF Brommapojkarna (H) - One of the relegation favorites visit the Friends Arena looking for an upset
(SA) Helsingborgs IF (H) - A big game early on as one of the big title contenders visit our home patch
(SA) Osters IF (A) - We end with a trip to Osters who won the Superettan last season to earn their spot in the Allsvenskan

http://i58.tinypic.com/2natlkh.jpg

Swedish Allsvenskan
vs. Gefle IF FF (Won 2-1)

AIK managed to continue their winning momentum in the league edging a tight affair against Gefle. Ibrahim Moro had given home side the lead with just over half an hour gone but Gefle managed to level affairs 2 minutes before the break through Johan Oremo. Ryan's men rallied in the second period and reclaimed the lead through a fantastic goal by Kennedy Igboananike.

This proved enough to win the match and see AIK lead the table after the first two matches.

Swedish Allsvenskan
vs. IFK Norrkoping FK (Won 3-2)

A late Ibrahim Moro strike spared the blushes for AIK as they claimed a vital 3 points away at Norrkoping. Gnaget had made the perfect start as they bagged 2 goals in the opening 11 minutes. Ibrahim Moro scored his first goal from the penalty spot on 8 minutes before an incisive break away from Robin Quaison fed in Celso Borges who doubled the lead 3 minutes later.

Credit to Norrkoping though who didn't relinquish the game so easily as Rawez Lawan pulled a goal back for the home side just before the break. It was then into the final 10 minutes where everything happened, AIK had been wasteful in front of goal and ultimately paid the price as Emir Kujovic scored a stunning 30 yard free kick to level proceedings.

A draw appeared on the cards but AIK rallied and instantly retook the lead after some good work from Niclas Eliasson. The winger managed to weave inside his man before slotting in Moro who buried his 2nd goal of the game, which ultimately proved the winner on the day.

Swedish Allsvenskan
vs. IF Brommapojkarna (Drew 0-0)

Fans were left frustrated as they watched their side spurn some glorious chances against a well disciplined Brommapojkarna. Despite the best efforts of the attacking players AIK could not find the goal they were searching for and had to settle for a point.

Swedish Allsvenskan
vs. Helsingborgs IF (Drew 0-0)

It was case of deja vu in many cases for AIK supporters as they watched their side once again take part in a goalless draw. Helsingborgs are tipped to fight for the Championship this term and it was clear from the start they were out to frustrate the home side. Celso Borges spurned the best opportunity just after half time, cracking the bar with a header from a corner.

Back to back draws for AIK saw them slip out of top spot after Elfsborg win.

Swedish Allsvenskan
vs. Osters IF (Won 2-1)

To the relief of many AIK finally found the scoring touch to edge an important result away to newly promoted Osters. Two goals in the opening 20 minutes from Robin Quaison and Henok Goitom proved enough to earn the win. Osters made AIK sweat for the result bagging a consolation through Alexander Henningsson with 18 minutes to go but Gnaget managed to hold out.

Ibrahim Moro's performances helped AIK on their way this month

http://i60.tinypic.com/293vc0p.jpg

http://i62.tinypic.com/15ewlyc.jpg

Well we managed to battle through a tough month without losing a game, so that was pleasing at least. It was however frustrating to not take our chances in the goalless draws against Brommapojkarna and Helsingsborgs but hopefully the team will find that killer edge on a more consistent basis.

A special mention for Ibrahim Moro who bagged himself some key goals and assists this month, he is only young but is proving to be a real catalyst in the middle of midfield. There is a long way to go of course but thanks to a couple of slip ups from our rivals we are currently top of the table with a little bit of a gap starting to grow, I can only hope for more of the same.

June 2013

After some mixed results in the previous month we managed to scrape through on top of the pile and were still unbeaten in the league. It was going to be difficult retaining the momentum but I wanted my players to go out and show no mercy towards other teams. This was going to be another tough month though with some big matches to play.

(SA) Malmo FF (A) - We open June with a trip to Malmo, a really tough fixture against a title challenger
(SA) BK Hacken (A) - Still on the road we face a trip to Hacken looking to keep our title challenge alive
(SA) Djurgardens IF (H) - The first Tvilling Derby of the season, one of our fiercest local rivals visit our home ground
(SA) Kalmar FF (H) - Back to back home games with Kalmar the visitors, another tricky fixture
(SA) IF Elfsborg (A) - We end with a journey to the media's favorites for the title, it should be a huge game

http://i58.tinypic.com/2natlkh.jpg

Swedish Allsvenskan
vs. Malmo FF (Drew 2-2)

AIK had to fight for a draw at Malmo battling from behind on two occasions, but boss Luke Ryan was left a frustrated figure on the touchline. Malmo took the lead just on the half hour mark through Markus Halsti, a nice finish into the bottom corner after a defensive mix up. It would be the second period before AIK managed to level proceedings however, Henok Goitom powered a bullet header into the top corner after a superb cross from Nabil Bahoui.

Malmo didn't allow themselves to be discourage though and were in front 10 minutes before the end, Markus Rosenberg managed to curl a 20 yard free kick around the AIK wall and into the bottom corner. However AIK made an instant response equalizing immediately from the kick off, Celso Borges the scorer after stabbing home a rebound from a corner.

Swedish Allsvenskan
vs. BK Hacken (Won 3-2)

It proved a tough affair but AIK managed to come away with 3 vital points after edging out Hacken. Henok Goitom opened the scoring after 3 minutes with a superb right footed finish, however the hosts went on to equalize just after the restart thanks to a Rene Makondele header. Goitom though was justifying his place in the first team and scored his second goal 2 minutes later to restore the away sides lead.

Niklas Backman thought he had made the result comfortable powering a header home with 20 minutes remaining but Makondele scored his second immediately from the restart. AIK were tested hard in the final minutes but managed to hold out for an important victory.

Swedish Allsvenskan
vs. Djurgardens IF (Won 5-0)

Fans of AIK were sent home with beaming smiles on their faces as they witnessed their side destroy fierce local rivals Djurgarden. Nabil Bahoui starred bagging brace for the home side whilst goals from Celso Borges, Niklas Backman and Henok Goitom rounded off an emphatic result for Gnaget.

Swedish Allsvenskan
vs. Kalmar FF (Lost 4-3)

AIK manager Luke Ryan was furious as his side capitulated in a crazy second half against Kalmar. It was the first loss of the season for AIK in the League and despite a Henok Goitom hat-trick they still found themselves leaving empty handed. David Elm had given the away side the lead after 23 minutes but Goitom bagged his first for the equalizer 10 minutes later.

Elm scored his second just on half time ensuring a lead at the break for the visitors. AIK came out all guns blazing and levelled proceedings on 55 minutes as Goitom scored his second. Two goals in a mad 10 minutes from Kalmar killed off the tie first through Melker Hallberg and then Mans Soderqvist to the dismay of the fans & manager. Goitom completed his hat-trick with 2 minutes to go but it proved too little to late.

Swedish Allsvenskan
vs. IF Elfsborg (Won 3-1)

AIK managed to put the previous defeat behind them after cruising to a comfortable win at title challenging Elfsborg. A Robin Quaison wonderstrike, Henok Goitom penalty and Niclas Eliasson header did the damage on the day and helped see AIK lead the table at the end of the month. Elfsborg consolation came on 62 minutes through Viktor Claesson.

Henok Goitom justified his chance at first team football with a glut of goals

http://i62.tinypic.com/15ewlyc.jpg

Well after all things considering I suppose there is not too much to moan about this month. We managed to maintain our place at the top of the table but ultimately there are some things we need get out of our system. The Kalmar game was a blip and it was important to move on and win at Elfsborg how we did, thankfully for us other teams had slipped up too.

The win in the Tvilling Derby was a big highlight because of how much it means to the fans and also it was nice to see Henok Goitom bagging the goals this month. He had moaned about the lack of first team football, so I gave him an opportunity to prove himself and it would appear he has taken the bull by the horns.

Borges: "For my futures sake, I have to leave"

In breaking news across Swedish Football it is being reported that Costa Rica forward man Celso Borges has handed in a transfer request after recent approaches from PSV Eindhoven & FC Twente were turned down. A reported conversation between Borges & current boss Luke Ryan leaked, stating the Gnaget star striker was yearning for a new challenge at a "bigger club".

This news comes at an inopportune time for the Swedish club as Borges has played a key role in pushing AIK into a title challenging position. Many fans have voiced their concerns over the news and are hoping for the issue to be resolved quickly, it would appear ultimately though that if the player is unhappy he may well move on.

Realistically his future could be away from AIK with European success a tough ask for such a small club, in comparison to the much more financially gifted clubs around the world. Boss Luke Ryan has yet to address this matter publicly but has always stated he wanted to reshape history with this team.

July 2013

The month of July could prove to be interesting, its not the busiest in terms of matches however we can still build a good platform for a title challenge. I will be expecting the same level of high performance from our key players especially the likes of Celso Borges & Henok Goitom who have been catalysts in recent matches.

(SA) Mjallby AIF (H) - We open the months fixtures with a visit from Mjallby who knocked us out the Swedish Cup earlier in the season
(SA) Halmstads BK (H) - Back to back to home matches see's the current overachievers in the league visit looking for points
(SA) Atvidabergs FF (A) - A trip to Atvidaberg ends the months fixtures and it could prove a banana skin

http://i58.tinypic.com/2natlkh.jpg

Swedish Allsvenskan
vs. Mjallby AIF (Won 4-0)

An emphatic home performance from AIK saw them continue a fine run of form as they demolish Mjallby. Celso Borges had a superb game scoring one and setting up 3 goals in the match. Henok Goitom bagged himself another brace whilst talented winger Nabil Bahoui added his name to score sheet to round off an impressive victory.

Swedish Allsvenskan
vs. Halmstads BK (Lost 2-0)

AIK slumped to a miserable defeat to Halmstads at the Friends Arena after the club accepted a transfer request from Celso Borges. AIK boss had made his intentions clear by dropping the club captain from the squad and it was clear the mood in the camp affecting the result. Goals either side of half time first from Dario Dumic and Danny Amankwaa did the damage for Halmstad who continue to be the League's surprise package.

Swedish Allsvenskan
vs. Atvidabergs FF (Drew 1-1)

A Robin Quaison free kick 20 minutes from time spared AIK blushes as they scraped a point at Atvidaberg. The home side had taken the lead after 21 minutes through a fine strike from Viktor Skold but Quaison's beautifully curling strike managed to salvage a point for Gnaget and help them avoid back to back defeats.

http://i62.tinypic.com/15egs6.jpg

Celso Borges stole the headlines in many ways this month

http://i59.tinypic.com/29glow0.jpg

http://i61.tinypic.com/14njw4n.jpg

http://i62.tinypic.com/15ewlyc.jpg

A hugely disappointing month of results as the team really reacted badly to Celso Borges transfer request. With him being club captain and my choice of dropping him, the team really lost its edge despite the opening game of the month against Mjallby. Borges performance in that match ultimately saw the other clubs around Europe step up their chase for him.

I accepted the transfer request simply because no player can be bigger than the club, I will not let him go for any less than 2 million though, so we shall see just how badly teams want his services after all. Anyway the team need to pick themselves up because anymore slip ups could see us lose top spot and if that happens, its a real uphill battle.
