John Warrington: A Footballing Journey

So here it is, my journey into the world of football (manager). To start with, I've created my pro as a player in FM20 with that player then going on to manage in FM21. For realism purposes, 2019/20 in FM20 will become the 1999/00 season with the aid of the FMRetroGroup 99/00 database.

I'm going to keep this opening post free to keep a record of my career.

John Warrington - A Footballing Journey

The start of the Journey

http://i.imgur.com/rflBJlJ.png

Oh my word, is this even real life? After being at the club since the age of eleven, I've finally signed a professional deal at Premier League side Liverpool. I am now officially a professional footballer. The goal is to play in the Premier League for Liverpool and play for England in a World Cup but I know I've got a lot of hard work ahead of me to even get close to that.

With my signing a contract for Liverpool, I'm now included on Football Manager for the first time! How exciting. They've even given me wonderkid status which means I'm more likely to have a good career in the game. My mate Sheeny says I signed for Barca in 2005 which is outrageous. I just hope I can live up to the billing and have a great career. It's going to be an exciting ride, either way, bring it on.

1999/00 Season

League Position: 4th in the Premier League

League Cup: 4th Round vs Chelsea

http://i.imgur.com/d8Ryd4W.png

So, my first full season in professional football and I'm reasonably happy with the way it went. In the league, we finished 4th whilst Man Utd won the league and we also won the FA Cup. During the season, I made my first professional appearance, though I'm still waiting for my first goal. For the U23's I scored 20 in 29 appearances. The objective for next season is to hopefully play a few more first-team games and score my first goal.

http://i.imgur.com/NSO7t18.png

Merseyside Derby on the opening day and I score my first goal for Liverpool. What a proud moment. The season itself was a good one with me scoring 4 goals in 9 Premier League appearances as well as 4 goals in the UEFA Cup. It's especially good given that I lost two months of it due to a broken leg in October. Thankfully it's all healed up now but it's hard to break in with Robbie Fowler and Michael Owen playing so well. In the league, we came 5th with Leeds winning it. Leeds also beat us in the UEFA Cup final. We also finished as runners up in the FA Cup but we did manage to win the Worthington Cup.

I'm not going to lie, I'm disappointed. I want to be playing more games than I am at the moment. I made 20 appearances in all competitions for the first team and scored 11 goals. For the U23's I scored 33 in 38 games. I've also scored 14 goals in 8 England U21 games, what do I need to do to get a fair shot. In terms of the season, we finished 2nd in the league behind Arsenal and won the UEFA cup.

This is more like it. I finally got a chance to show what I can do and ended up scoring 14 goals in 28 Premier League games along with 7 in 11 Champions League games. We were unlucky not to win any trophies this season, coming 3rd in the Premier League behind winners Man Utd and Arsenal and losing in the semi-finals of the Champions League and FA Cup.

I don't know what to say. After last season I thought I was finally getting my chance to shine but then I only played 15 games this season. I did still score 8 goals mind you. I'm disappointed to be transfer listed but I think it's for the best, I need to be somewhere I can be appreciated. The big highlight of the season was the fulfillment of a lifelong dream by making my England debut and scoring. What an honour and I hope this is the start of a successful international career.

Bye-bye Anfield. I've finally said goodbye to my first club Liverpool to officially join Bayern Munich for £8.75m. However, this move hasn't really changed anything. I only made 10 Bundesliga appearances during the season, scoring 4 goals, though we did win the league and cup double.

I'm really happy with the way the season went. I scored 18 league goals in 26 appearances which I'm more than chuffed with. I also regained my place in the England squad because of this form. To top it all off, we once again did the league and cup double.

Another fantastic season, probably my best yet. We came so close to doing the treble, losing to Arsenal in the Champions League final. Personally, it was a great season with me scoring 20 goals in 26 games and being named as the Supporters Player of the Year. My main aim now is for us to win the Champions League.

Yikes, a season with no silverware, unless you count the Super Cup. We've finally lost our hold on the Bundesliga title. We had a new manager come in at the start of the season and I've played less games under Luis Fernandez. I only played 17 games in the Bundesliga scoring 13 goals. I hope this isn't the beginning of the end at Bayern. I may be 33 but I still have plenty left to give.

I said last season that I was worried that it was the beginning of the end and I was right. I played even less this season even though my goals to game ratio was pretty good. The Next Chapter

Now I've retired here's a look back at my playing career. I'm really pleased with how it's gone and I'm looking forward to starting my managerial career at some point in the future. Before then though I need to do more work on my coaching badges. The plan is to spend four years doing just that then go into management around the year 2020 or 2021.

John Warrington: A Footballing Journey

An Update

So the last I updated you all was a very long time ago, over three years ago infact. When I retired in 2017 after a very successful playing career, I knew that I wanted to go into management. However, the first thing I did following my retirement was to move back home to the Wirral where I grew up as a kid. Since then I have been busy working on obtaining my coaching badges and I currently hold a continental B license.

https://i.imgur.com/WiaFNcG.jpg

A year after moving back to the Wirral I received an invite from Tranmere Rovers manager Micky Mellon to go down to Tranmere's Solar Campus training ground to get involved in a coaching capacity. I was delighted and for the last two season's I've been working alongside Micky and his assistant Mike Jackson behind the scenes. This all changed in the summer when Micky left Tranmere to become the manager of Dundee United in Scotland.

https://i.imgur.com/zTSwNNg.jpg

With Micky's departure, his assistant Mike Jackson took over as manager of Tranmere and told me that he did not want me as part of the backroom team at the club anymore. To tell you the truth I was gutted, as my hometown club I loved Tranmere but to be booted out without a warning left a bitter taste in the mouth. This leads me to the present day where I've just received a text from my Southport supporting friend telling me their manager has been sacked. He thinks I should apply and that's exactly what I'm going to do.

John Warrington: A Footballing Journey

The Journey Begins

In my previous update I managed that I was going to apply for the Southport job on the recommendation of my Southport supporting friend and I'm delighted to say that the application was successful. I now have my first management job in the word of football, albeit a little lower down the leagues than I was expecting to start off with.

https://i.imgur.com/cYAmiiQ.png

For those that don't know, Southport are currently playing in the National League North following relegation a few seasons ago. The club is a semi-professional club and is extremely basic in terms of facilities.

https://i.imgur.com/jSwNlvU.png

The board are looking for me to guide the club to a mid-table this season but my personal aim is for us to push for the playoffs.

https://i.imgur.com/RKvx4na.png

The Stadium

https://i.imgur.com/elB2VQH.png

Southport play their home games at Haig Avenue which holds 6,000 people. It's not a massive stadium but it suits the level that the club is currently at.

Facilities

https://i.imgur.com/pRmmfi6.png

As you'd expect for a semi-professional side, our facilities are either basic or at best poor. Given that I want to be able to bring in young players from our development squads, improving our youth set-up will definitely be one of my priorities moving forward.

The Squad

https://i.imgur.com/F639NUX.png

Finally we move onto the current squad. It's not a bad squad for this level but in my opinion its not anywhere near the level I want. My plan is to completely overhaul it in the next few months before the season starts in October.

Well to say pre-season was hectic would be an understatement! Not only have we managed to overhaul the squad, our pre-season results have been fantastic. I am really optimistic that we can push for the playoffs, maybe even promotion if we're lucky.

October 2020

https://i.imgur.com/G52059D.png

An excellent start to my reign as Southport boss. I would have liked us to win by a lot more but a win is a win and it means a safe passage through to the next round of the FA Cup.

5th October

Southport drawn away at Needham Market in the FA Cup Third Qualifying Round

http://i.imgur.com/mDjS2BX.png

Another 1-0 win, this time in our first National League North game. This win was extremely impressive as AFC Fylde is never an easy place to go as Tranmere found a few years back. It's also great to kick the season off with three points.

http://i.imgur.com/GMiNtPG.png

I was a little disappointed to lose the clean sheet right at the end but I'm more than happy with the three points and a good performance.

I would have liked to have won by more goals but job done in the FA Cup, onwards into the 4th qualifying round.

15th October

Southport drawn at home against Altrincham in the FA Cup 4th Qualifying Round

http://i.imgur.com/zH29GOQ.png

A really good result away at Chorley but losing Zehn Mohammed for 5 weeks - 2 months with a hamstring strain is far from ideal.

23rd October

Goalkeeper Cameron Gregory joins on loan from Shrewsbury.

http://i.imgur.com/kUXf8jQ.png

YESSSSSSSSSS! Unbelievable. Cameron Gregory has made himself a hero already, saving a penalty in normal time and pulling off a string of top draw saves before then saving two in the shootout. What a guy!

26th October

Southport drawn away at Scunthorpe in the FA Cup 1st Round

http://i.imgur.com/b1oVNs5.png

Another solid performance and another three points. Interestingly, I checked the league odds and following our signings we are now favourites to win the league!

http://i.imgur.com/V95UpU7.png

A solid 1-0 win at Latimer Park to round off the month and we continue our 100% record so far.

John Warrington: A Footballing Journey

November 2020

https://i.imgur.com/KvcRZWx.png

What an effort by the lads. We took a League Two side all the way to penalties away from home but unfortunately, it wasn't to be. I can't fault the lads.

7th November

Sam Gibson ruled out for 5 months with a broken foot

9th November

Southport drawn away at Alfreton in the FA Trophy 2nd Round

https://i.imgur.com/K0p84Re.png

A very disappointing result this one. We could and should have won but if you don't take your chances that's what happens.

https://i.imgur.com/7xcF1qa.png

Exactly the same as the Farsley game. Very frustrating even after switching to our back-up two up front formation.

16th November

https://i.imgur.com/CvywgQx.png

A bit of good news as the board agree to fund my next coaching course

17th November

Striker Tom Heardman signs on a free transfer.

https://i.imgur.com/0yEtdTH.png

That's more like it! A comfortable win and three points in the bag.

https://i.imgur.com/HV22Jbv.png

A 4-2 win against Gateshead at home but honestly, we could have had 8 or 9. We were superb and thoroughly deserved the win.

https://i.imgur.com/Hr98JJk.png

Another very good win at home against Telford. The lads are playing really well after that blip earlier in the month.

https://i.imgur.com/T9WzKma.png

A poor defensive performance but when you're out scoring the opposition can you really complain? Another good result.

John Warrington: A Footballing Journey

December 2020

http://i.imgur.com/SBbmovv.png

A great start to the month, an easy 2-0 win over Boston.

https://i.imgur.com/IetWQ0Y.png

We got out of jail massively here. I made 9 changes and it almost backfired. Luckily we were able to equalise in stoppage time before winning the tie in extra time.

7th December

Southport draw Spennymoor at home in the FA Trophy Third Round.

https://i.imgur.com/XiaOzxC.png

Back in league action and a solid 3-0 win at home against Brackley.

https://i.imgur.com/ETeUlck.png

Phew, again I made 9 changes for the FA Trophy and it almost cost us. The red card at 0-2 changed the game and luckily we managed to battle back to pick up the win.

21st December

Southport draw Weymouth away in the FA Trophy 4th Round

https://i.imgur.com/WmQN5pX.png

Another easy win in a match we dominated. The lads are playing some great stuff and morale is high in the dressing room.

https://i.imgur.com/XIqjJya.png

A disappointing way to end the year with the red card costing us dearly. That said, I'd have taken top spot going into the new year at the start of the season.

John Warrington: A Footballing Journey

January 2021

https://i.imgur.com/l3zzzev.png

A very good win to start the month and the perfect response to the draw at Gloucester.

6th January

https://i.imgur.com/wqqmdlJ.png

Shane Blaney joins Derry for a fee of 16k.

https://i.imgur.com/03i7YCc.png

This was our hardest game so far on paper and it showed. We couldn't get anything going and we eventually fell to our first defeat of the season.

13th January

Midfielder Sam Perry and defender Joe Dunne join on loan from Walsall and Rochdale respectively.

https://i.imgur.com/XXk2dYf.png

Safely through round 5, job done.

18th January

Southport to travel to Chester in the FA Trophy 5th Round.

https://i.imgur.com/2q75DvA.png

Bolton have pulled the rug from underneath us and recalled Harry Brockbank because we played him as a ball-playing defender. Wanky Wanderers indeed.

https://i.imgur.com/VgKh34T.png

It took us a while but it was great to get the win, especially after going down to ten.

https://i.imgur.com/W7WQlax.png

A poor first half but we came alive in the second half to gain all three points. Can't argue with that.

25th January

https://i.imgur.com/Y4Hu23P.png

Well, this isn't ideal, Zehn Mohammed rejects an extension to his loan.

24th January

Defender Troy Brown joins on a free transfer.

https://i.imgur.com/ltpmPp1.png

How the hell have we lost this? We were by far the better team. Frustrating.

John Warrington: A Footballing Journey

February 2021

https://i.imgur.com/Gu3E8lb.png

A really good win at home against Bradford PA and a good way to bounce back after that Chester game.

https://i.imgur.com/qT7tZgw.png

Revenge! This is what should have happened in the league game last month.

8th February

Southport drawn at home to Chesterfield in the FA Trophy Quarter-Final

https://i.imgur.com/KqtUfDd.png

We left it a bit later than I'd like but we eventually got the job done with two late goals.

https://i.imgur.com/RyYMqTN.png

Given that Chorley are 4th, I should be happy with a draw but our second-half performance was nowhere near good enough. It was probably the worse we've played and I made sure the lads knew how unacceptable it was.

https://i.imgur.com/DkLdYwB.png

8 shots to 25 and we've not won the game. I'm angry. Defensively we were woeful and we should have taken more chances.

https://i.imgur.com/ubaUiXb.png

It was a tough game against a team from the league above but the lads showed superb character and heart to come from behind and win the game in extra time and put us into the FA Trophy semi-finals. I'm proud of the lads today.

John Warrington: A Footballing Journey

March 2021

1st March

Southport to travel to Chelmsford City is the FA Trophy semi-finals

https://i.imgur.com/CVhn99h.png

Get the **** IN. Tom Heardman you beauty! I took a risk for this game going with a different formation for this game and Tom popped up with a hat-trick. We were a bit poor defensively in the second half admittedly but it's something to work with.

https://i.imgur.com/og0CSUg.png

I feared the worst when Leamington equalised against the run of play with 70 minutes gone but two goals in four minutes meant we deservedly went away with all three points.

https://i.imgur.com/MCzcIDm.png

Another game where we didn't take our chances but we managed to take one and keep Telford out and that's all that matters.

https://i.imgur.com/LE9qvXA.png

Domination! Not much more to say really.

https://i.imgur.com/bijdKzh.png

Another quality performance from the lads. Three goals and they didn't even have a shot on target. It's only a matter of time until we reach the National League.

https://i.imgur.com/S0MaMYH.png

Only a 1-0 win but at the end of the day a win is a win.

https://i.imgur.com/gbePyqH.png

We needed extra time but there's absolutely no one out there that can say we didn't deserve to win and go through to the final. We were by far the better side.
